Adelante of Suffolk County to Host ‘Three Kings Day’ with Toy Drive December 25 may be Santa’s big day, but in Hispanic culture, it is the 12th day of Christmas, January 6, that is celebrated. “El Dia de los Reyes”, or Three Kings Day, marks the visit by the three Wise Men to

Recently, Suffolk County Legislator Sam Gonzalez was joined by several local community organizations to help distribute food and PPE to residents in front of La Placita in Brentwood for the Thanksgiving holiday. Legislator Gonzalez collaborated with United Health Care, US Federal Chaplains Agency, Loyal Chaplains, Masjid Darul Quran, Jibaritos with Troops, Puerto Rican Coalition For A Better Community, Inc., Mother Chapter of Long Island Ruff Ryders, Flutterflies, Moloney Family Funeral Homes, Inc., Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, Suffolk County Police Department, Suffolk County Police Hispanic Society, Brentwood Legion Ambulance, and the Citizen Initiative For the Change. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many residents throughout the district have felt the increased financial pressure when providing for their families during this holiday season. Alongside Legislator Gonzalez, volunteers were able to help distribute over 150 plates of hot food, drinks, 200 bagels, groceries, masks, hand sanitizers, hot soup, and other food items to the community. “During this challenging time, many families have found themselves feeling the financial strain of the ongoing pandemic,” said Legislator Gonzalez. “Through a unified community effort, it is wonderful to be able to give back to those who truly need it the most during this holiday season.” “The Suffolk County Police Hispanic Society

Preservation Long Island Announces Call for 2021 Endangered Historic Places Nominations

Preservation Long Island, a regional preservation advocacy nonprofit, is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2021 Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP). Nominations are open to the public and can be submitted digitally through the EHPP 2021 portal on Preservation Long Island’s website. All nominations must be received by Friday, December 18, 2020. Do you know of an endangered historic place in your Long Island community? Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP) offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation priorities in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach. Our EHPP listing partners receive technical assistance and advocacy support as they work to preserve at-risk historic places threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to the lack of sustainable long-term stewardship plans. EHPP listings are featured on Preservation Long Island’s website and social media. Listed sites may serve as locations for our Preservation in Progress Tour series, which highlights ongoing preservation projects at historic places throughout the region. We also support our listing partners in developing informational materials such as leaflets or brochures outlining the history of a site and its preservation needs. Listings are selected by a panel of Preservation Long Island staff, experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields, as well as members of Preservation Long Island’s Board of Trustees.

A Cheerful Parade Tradition

Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School held its annual Balloons Over CRES second grade parade on Nov. 24, bringing socially distanced joy to the entire school. The event was the culmination of an ELA activity where

students read Melissa Sweet’s book “Balloons over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade,” which examines the history of the Macy’s Parade and the creation of the giant balloons by puppeteer Tony

Sarg. “We were all in the need of some good old-fashioned cheer and normalcy,” said Principal James Cameron. “Thank you so much to the second grade for keeping this tradition going for all of us.”

However, the nominated site need not be listed on the National/State Registers of Historic Places or designated as a local landmark. Threat: The existence and/ or integrity of the nominated site must be seriously threatened. In addition to planned demolition, threats can include a pattern of neglect or exposure that will inevitably lead to loss; the planned introduction of harmful factors or insensitive redevelopment that will substantially diminish the context or setting; or inappropriate maintenance/alterations resulting in the loss of material integrity. Impact: EHPP listing will have a positive impact on efforts to protect the nominated site. The nomination demonstrates substantive community interest in preservation of the site. Local listing partners are sufficiently organized and prepared to advocate for preservation goals.

Nomination materials should be submitted online via our website at preservationlongisland.org. Nominations submitted after Friday, December 18, 2020, will not be accepted. Ending The Year On A “Be Kind” Note

Fr. Richard E. Simpson, rector, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Islip, is adamant: “Christmas joy this year is about fighting hunger.” He adds that by the end of this year, it’s estimated that 54 million Americans will go to bed hungry, with 17 million of those children. Santa agreed, so despite December 5th’s torrential rainfalls, high winds, and cold temperatures, the church, at 754 Montauk Highway at St. Mark’s Lane

in Islip, NY, continued its monthly outdoor contactless food drop, raising over 20,000 items. Santa had helpers from the parish, community-atlarge and Islip Rotary, as well as students from Stony Brook University. They all managed to protect the food, and themselves, from the wet. Shrugging off the terrible December 5th weather, Santa said he was “proud owner of an umbrella.” And

the cars just kept rolling in to drop off food. All donations were sent to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of LI Cares. The organization distributes food to pantries at churches, shelters and senior communities throughout Long Island’s South Shore. It’s officially the season of giving!
