Thanksgiving Retold Second-graders at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School worked cooperatively to create a picture book that retold the story of the first Thanksgiving, which they presented as a play on November 24th. With the assistance of music teacher Kathleen Carter, the students learned

Thanksgiving songs like “Albuquerque Turkey” and “We Are Thankful,” and attending family members were impressed with the entire performance, held in the school’s community room.” “The students worked very hard learning their parts, speaking eloquently and singing expressively

as they described the events leading up to the first Thanksgiving,” said teacher Cathy Boudart. “The children became much more aware of the hardships that were faced by the Pilgrims and Native Americans during the 1620s.”

Big Turnout for Trot East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School held its first annual Turkey Trot on the morning of November 25th, where students and staff who had

donated canned and boxed food items were invited for a sprint around the school. “It was a successful collection for a local food pantry and a wonderful

turnout for the Turkey Trot outside,” said Principal Hillary K. Bromberg. “We all ran together to celebrate the act of giving.”

East Islip High School star bowler Olivia Lopera signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Adelphi University next fall. She will major in speech pathology. Awarded with AllCounty, All-Long Island, All-State and Scholar-

Athlete recognition, Lopera was named Long Island Bowler of the Year in 2014. She joined the varsity team while still in seventh grade, and as a sophomore, was a key member of East Islip’s undefeated state, league and county championship season, earning the second

highest average in Suffolk. Last year, she broke the county and Long Island girls bowling record for high average with a score of 228.30 and was named to the Section XI All-Star team. “Adelphi has a great bowling program,” said Lopera, who has known Panthers coach Dennis Kearny for much of her athletic career. “I spent a night with the team, and really felt like I fit in. The school had exactly what I wanted.” While looking forward to her bright future at Adelphi, located in Garden City, she noted that she would miss her days of success with the Lady Redmen. Islip Town Receiver of Taxes, Alexis Weik, has announced that her office, located at 40 Nassau Avenue, Islip, is accepting payment of 2015/2016 taxes. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the following exceptions: On December 31st, the office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon and we will be closed on

December 24th, December 25th and January 1st. “One evening in January has been set aside for those residents who are unable to pay in person during our regular 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. business hours,” said Mrs. Weik. “On Monday, January 11th, the office will remain open until 7:00 p.m.” Of course, residents can save time by visiting the Town of Islip website

(www.townofislip-ny.gov) and pay their taxes online or by mailing their tax payments. However, to avoid penalty, all payments must be postmarked BY THE POST OFFICE no later than January 11th, 2016. Cyber Safety Police officer Sabrina Pitch from Suffolk County’s Community Response Bureau recently visited sixth-grade social studies classes at Islip Middle School, speaking on the importance of

cyber safety. Students were encouraged to make good choices and to think about choosing other activities instead of going online. “Officer Pitch’s presentation on awareness of the dangers of social

media was quite effective,” said teacher Sue Davis. “She was professional and caring while imparting an important message about Internet safety.”

Comedy is Central act plays, from works such as “The Good Doctor,” “Plaza Suite,” “The Odd Couple” and “California Suite. ” Several students participated in the running crew, working seamlessly backstage with the cast members, according to Drama Club Director Bethany Affelt, who was pleased with the turnout and proud of all of the

students who participated. “The students onstage were hilarious,” said Affelt. “They kept surprising me and impressing me with their sense of comedic timing and general instincts as comedic actors. From the beginning of the rehearsal process to the closing night, the experience was a joyful one.”

Winning Tradition East Islip Middle School’s girls soccer squad carried on its winning tradition this fall, achieving another outstanding undefeated season, ending with an 8-0 record. The young athletes’ skills improved dramatically throughout the season, powering them

past all of their opponents. “The girls did a fantastic job this season with the toughest schedule we have had in several years,” said Barbara Huether, who has coached the team for the past 15 years. “They all worked so well together, and their determination

led them to their success.” Alexa Fusco, the team’s captain in both seventh and eighth grade, attributed the team’s success to attitude. “We never give up and we always stay positive,” said Fusco.

Career Development Seventeen graduates of East Islip High School’s career development program attended a recent fall alumni luncheon, an annual event that gives former students a chance to reconnect with friends as well as staff. Each year, all current students in the program actively plan the event as part of the curriculum. Students choose a theme, create a guest list, write and send invitations, create a menu, choose

and make decorations and favors, write a shopping list, shop for food, cook, set up, serve, greet guests and clean up. “The favorite part of the planning process seems to be checking the RSVP list posted on the classroom fridge to watch the list grow,” said teacher Margaret Gallagher. At this year’s party, additional guests included former career development staff; East Islip’s superintendent, John V.

Dolan; and Susan Kosser, the district’s assistant to the superintendent for student support services. “It has become a right of passage, and ‘see you at the alumni party’ has become part of the farewell as students formally exit our career development program,” said Gallagher. “Many of our former students begin contacting current students as each school year begins just to see if we have set the date.”

Coaches & Athletes Honored The best of East Islip’s strong cross-country program was recognized at the Section XI Cross Country All-County Dinner, held on November 11th at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Boys varsity coach Ralph Tubello was named League Eighth Graders at SSCM have ample opportunity to flex their creative muscles while developing teambuilding skills and learning to work cooperatively within a group. Mrs. Judy Keeler, veteran SSCM Middle School teacher uses a studentcentered reading strategy called Literature Circles. Student teams work together to select a book that they will read and then each student takes on a specific role in the “Lit Circle”, allowing the group to work together to analyze the story line and present

their take on the piece of literature they’ve read. Mrs. Keeler introduces the concept to the students as 7th graders and as they become more experienced in this highly interactive and collaborative method of bringing literature to life, the students’ presentations surely gain momentum. Their sometimes heated debates and active involvement in showcasing the story line for their fellow students are clear evidence of how engaged these young adults are in the reading process,

something often lacking in Middle School students today. SSCM’s Lit Circles allow young minds to think analytically about the works they are reading. Further, for these students preparing to make their way to high school within the coming year, the process also allows them to take responsibility for their own learning and take ownership of the outcomes of their study habits and collaborative work - life skills they will take with them for the long haul.

They took away all the towering trees. Ignored the little one that hardly Reached above their knees. To decorate houses and halls for X-mas The trees were meant. All over different cities they were sent. Proudly, with their needles raised, The wind their “good-bye” to the blue spruce traced. The grounds yawned where the trees had been. Only the unwanted little spruce was seen. Snow soon after began to fall; The little tree dreamt of being strong and tall. He knew that the trees that had left him Would shine and twinkle when the day got dim. On the day before X-mas, a father and son For a walk in the snow covered woods had gone. “Father, oh father, come and see. Here is a beautiful little X-mas tree!” The child exclaimed and stroked the tree. “This is just the right size for me!”

Student Spotlight A WITNESS TO HISTORY SUBMITTED BY: CATE DUNN, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Have you ever witnessed history? I have - my school was given a Historical Marker when it turned 90. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history. I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school. Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard? Now, my school has changed a lot. Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.

As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum. Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day. Walter Diemer’s accident turned into a brilliant invention. In addition to learning about an invention in the 1920’s, we also learned about an event. The event I researched was the tri-

state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars. This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured. I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster. It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming. The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time. Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end. If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today. If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles. The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

New Partnership Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) announced that it has entered into a new partnership with the nonfor-profit BroadHollow Theatre Company in East Islip. The Countdown Begins By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week until Christmas, and I can honestly say that not only is my tree still standing in the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet. I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough. But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and

the massive process of wading through the unpacked boxes of decorations strewn about my apartment. Oh, and then the Christmas cards I decided to order arrived, to be added to the growing pile of things to be done. I suppose I should get them in the mail this week. Of course, I realize I’m not alone in this scenario. There are those who claim to have their holiday preparations completed by Thanksgiving weekend; but we all know this is highly unrealistic. Just one quick look around the neighborhood tells me that there are plenty of people in the same boat as me, with freshly cut trees strapped to the tops of their cars, and half-strung lights hanging from their rafters. And the stores. We all know

there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators. It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it. When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly? January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus
