The School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) FIRST® LEGO® League Jr. and FIRST® LEGO® League seasons are officially underway across Long Island. Students and mentors from the programs, which collectively reach children in grades one through 12, are hard at work researching, designing, building, programming and testing models and robots that will best address the “Challenge” set forth this season. During AQUA ADVENTURESM, FIRST® LEGO® League Jr., students (ages six to 10) will explore how water is used in a home or community, the journey the water takes and improvements that can be made to this process. These students will examine where water comes from, how it gets to homes and buildings, how and whether it is treated

beforehand and approaches to water conservation. They will then select one way in which water is used, research the subject and design a solution to improve the journey using a kit of LEGO parts and software. Teams will then have the opportunity to present their models, along with a “Show Me” poster, during a series of three Expos held at Mineola High School on March 3rd, 2018 and at Longwood High School on March 4th, 2018. Echoing the water theme, FIRST® LEGO® League’s HYDRO DYNAMICSSM, students (ages nine to 14) are tasked with identifying a problem within the human water cycle and finding a solution to the problem. Examples can include something as simple as quenching ones thirst or swimming in a pool, or as complicated as how water is used to produce

food, energy and even technology, among other things. Once a problem has been identified, they students will then evaluate current solutions and subsequently design, build and test an innovative solution, using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® kit, that adds value to society. The children will then present the solution during one of six different Qualifier tournaments being held at Great Hollow Middle School (January 20th-21st, 2018) and Mineola High School (February 3rd-4th, 2018), with the chance of subsequently advancing to the Championship tournament at Longwood High School (March 4th, 2018). Bounty of Bologna their families donated loaves of bread and bologna, and the children made 150 bologna sandwiches to donate to the Mercy Inn Soup Kitchen in Wyandanch. They also decorated brown paper bags to hold the sandwiches, which were delivered to the shelter by student Declan Pegion

and his mother, just in time for the residents’ Thanksgiving meal. “Our students left Commack Road for the Thanksgiving break with a wonderful feeling of helping others as we enter this season of giving,” said LeMaire. “What a great lesson and inspiration.”

PLANNING COUNCIL HONORED - The Long Island Regional Planning Council, which provides leadership on issues of significance in Nassau and Suffolk counties and is a strong advocate for the region’s environment, was recently recognized as a “Champion for Clean Water” by the New York League of Conservation Voters. The League’s “Environmental Leader Award” was recently given to the Council in recognition of its work on the Long Island Nitrogen Action Plan (LINAP), which is viewed as a key step in improving water quality.

on November 16th. “Through our students’ efforts and the generosity of our community, we were able to collect a tremendous amount of food to donate to local churches and food

pantries,” said club adviser Nicole Vincenti. “Thank you to all involved in making a difference in our community.”

Christmas Conundrums And just like that, it’s less than two weeks until Christmas. No sooner did I unpack my infamous Christmas closet and brace myself for the avalanche of décor which poured forth, then I must now begin to contemplate how in the world I’m going to fit everything back where I found it. ’Tis the season, indeed, short as it may be. I’m sure I am not alone in discovering that, upon surveying the annual spread of lights and battery-operated trinkets, there are always some casualties carried over from the previous holiday season lights that no longer twinkle, animated knick knacks that have become somewhat more stationary, garland that was torn by the wind… whatever the case may be. This year, remembering I had taken my remaining lights and

tossed them in the trash in frustration somewhere between Christmas ’16 and the dropping of the ball in Times Square, I knew I was in the market for replacements. Of course, not having measured prior to heading to the store, I was forced to guess at what might fit. Once home, I found that A) the strand of lights barely stretched across the window frame, necessitating an extension cord to reach the outlet; B) the multi-colored assortment I had chosen came with a fun bonus feature, a “twinkling” variation leaving me constantly squinting to be sure I wasn’t hallucinating; and C) the best part of all, the frequent sound of the entire strand falling from the top of the window, as a few strategically placed pieces of

tape gave way. Every. Single. Night. On the hour, at least. How many days until Christmas? And with that, I have yet to begin the process of shopping, planning the Christmas Eve menu, or mailing out my photo card creations - another debacle if ever there was one. Suffice to say, in my haste to choose pictures and arrange them in the template I had selected, I neglected to “ﬂip” the card over and notice it was, in fact, a postcard. How very traditional. Season’s Greetings from my apartment, where Christmas rarely goes off without a hitch, the lights never stop blinking, and the closet door may indeed fall off its hinges before the final present is wrapped. Darn, wrapping paper.

Anthony Scotto, one of Long Island’s most successful entrepreneurs, understands more than just business – he understands the importance of giving. Mr. Scotto immigrated to the United States from a fishing village in Monte di Procida, Italy when he was eighteen years old. Once in America, he went to work for his uncle in Brooklyn at Romano’s Restaurant as a dishwasher. As someone who always felt that “work was a good thing,” he wasn’t afraid to work hard. As an immigrant, Mr. Scotto felt a great hunger to do something, so he progressed from washing dishes to cooking meals to eventually venturing off with his two brothers and opening Scotto’s Pizzeria. Having an immense love for people, food and family, Mr. Scotto, who now owns countless restaurants and catering venues under the name of Scotto Brothers Enterprises (a

He made it a point to mention that he loves work so much that he could wake up at 7 a.m. and work until midnight, and do it all again the next day without a problem. Anthony Scotto’s newest business venture, One North, a Mediterranean style restaurant located at the old Maine Maid Inn in Jericho, is nothing less than exquisite. This historical building sat empty for just about 10 years when, finally, local residents reached out to Mr. Scotto to ask if he was interested in renovating the building and opening a new business there. Two and a half years later, Mr. Scotto had it completely revamped, and it now looks better than ever! One North offers a unique and tasteful menu, which Mr.

Scotto assisted in creating. It has a modern décor, which was inspired by European coastal living. A mozzarella bar creates a cozy setting near the kitchen; beautiful private event rooms are available to rent out; and you’ll never be left cold on their patio, which holds multiple heaters and a luxurious fireplace. In the spirit of giving, Anthony Scotto donated $75,000 from his first week in business at the new location to the following charitable organizations: Heroes To Heroes Foundation, Cohen Children’s Medical Center and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. He knows what it means to struggle and feels that everyone has a duty to help the less fortunate. It was nothing less than obvious, upon speaking about helping those in need with Mr. Scotto, that he truly has a generous heart. After all, money can come and go, but generosity from one to another can never be taken away.

HARMONY CAFÉ

Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)

on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. ESBOCES School Social Worker Jennifer FarnumWeber said, “The fair allows parents the ability to have more control over what programs their children are involved with. With

VISITING HISTORY - The 9th grade Humanities scholars at Bay Shore High School had a chance to view history first-hand. They traveled to the Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia to discover the story behind the authentic Terracotta Warriors and the days of China’s First Emperor. Re-Accreditation Earned

Eastern Suffolk BOCES has earned reaccreditation by the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools, a worldwide leader in accreditation and continuous school improvement. Eastern Suffolk BOCES was accredited as a “Learning Service Provider” encompassing all of the schools and services that are provided to districts. The first accreditation was awarded in May 2000. “We are pleased to have earned re-accreditation by the Middle States Association and to share in our success with the greater school community, especially the teachers, parents and students who worked so hard to make this possible,” said Chief Operating

Officer, Julie Davis Lutz, Ed.D. “Re-accreditation confirms and validates the work we do each and every day to ensure a top quality education for our students.” Accreditation is a self-evaluation process that schools voluntarily undergo to demonstrate they are meeting a defined set of performance standards. The accreditation process helps schools – and ultimately students – to continuously grow and improve. The process begins with a self-study that is conducted by the school and requires input from school leaders, teachers, parents and students. Following the self-study, a team of volunteer educators from Association member schools conducts an on-site peer review

visit to observe school operations and interview various stakeholders. The visiting team makes its recommendation to the Middle States Association Commissions, which votes on the accreditation. “The accreditation process examines schools in a holistic way, supplementing student testing data and providing a more complete measure of a school’s performance,” said Henry G. Cram, Ed.D., president of the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools. “School leaders, teachers and parents are to be commended for working together to create a concrete plan focused on providing high quality education for all students.”

East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions Club recently ran its annual Red Ribbon Week program, with members visiting each fifth-grade classes in the district’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools. While speaking to the younger students, SADD members took the opportunity to share important information on drugs, bullying and

safety. They also ran a Red Ribbon anti-drug slogan contest and presented skits to help students envision what different drug- or bullying-related situations might look like and how to respond. In return, the fifth-graders wrote letters to the seniors at the high school, reminding them to make good decisions during prom and graduation as well as wishing them well in their life after high school. “This program is so

important because these 11-year-old students are at an age statistically where drugs and alcohol abuse starts,” said SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo. “We need to get to them early and teach them that life is about choices and making the right ones. Our SADD members did a wonderful job and I hope that programs like this help stop an epidemic that is out of control and avoidable.”

In recognition of the Red Ribbon Week campaign, East Islip Middle School Principal Mark Bernard along with students and staff participated in a week of activities designed to

promote drug awareness and prevention. Banners and posters were created under the direction of Frances Weller’s Art and Service Club, and each middle school student

pledged to be drug free by completing a contract and signing a “key”. These keys now proudly hang throughout the school building to reinforce the students’ commitment.
