n keeping with South Country School’s tradition of giving back, a school-wide food drive helped to fill 30 Thanksgiving baskets this year. In order to complete these Thanksgiving meals, hundreds of dollars in turkeys and supermarket gift cards were donated by South Country staff and families. GRANT RECEIVED - Options for Community Living, Inc. is the recipient of a $6,500 grant from the Burpee Foundation. The grant will enable Options to purchase supplies for their Greenhouse and refurbish planting areas damaged by the super storm last year. Options operates a community residence program for adults with mental illness and also serves people with serious chronic illnesses through health care coordination. Options’ mission is to assist people to live independently and with dignity in the community.
PATIENT SUPPORT - The Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital raised funds for the renovation of the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) family waiting area. The unit is staffed 24 hours a day with physicians and nurses specially trained and certified in the care of critically ill patients. A multidisciplinary approach is taken, with a team of subspecialists able to provide quality care as well as providing support to their families. They are concerned mainly with the prestige level of my prospective school. Surely, prestige is not the deciding factor in what I hope will be a very successful career. Perhaps a less recognized school will afford me the same kind of education, in an environment where I will thrive. The vast majority of prestigious schools maintain a focus on graduate education. This
means less one-on-one learning with a professor. If I choose to attend a smaller school, I may have the opportunity to learn more efficiently. On the other hand, the brand recognition associated with my parents’ choices will undoubtably carry weight, and take me far in life. With just a few days until I hear back from colleges with an acceptance or denial, it is time to make a decision. Do I go to a school that will make me happy? Do I go to a school that will make my parents happy? It is undoubtably the biggest decision I will have had to make in my seventeen years of life.
I cannot infer how happy I will be at a college. I don’t even know what I want to do with my life yet. As of right now, I want to become a journalist, but last month I wanted to be a chef! I don’t know how my life will play out, so there are no guarantees. Surely, a degree is nothing; it is what you do in those four years and beyond that count. There is no stress for me anymore, as I am done with the application process. The ball is in their court now. I can only hope I choose the school that is right for me.

Closing For The Winter The Long Island Museum announces that it will close for the months of January and February, 2014. Next year, 2014 marks the 75th anniversary of the Long Island Museum’s founding and big changes are on the horizon. After a brief winter hiatus, the museum will reopen on March 1st with three new exhibitions: Colors of Long Island, the annual student art exhibition featuring original artwork by Long Island students in grades K through 12. The exhibit will be on display in the Visitors Center from March 1st through April 27th, 2014 Moving to the Art Museum, the main gallery will feature Brothers in Art: the Changing Face of
American Painting, which includes more than 150 paintings, prints, drawings and letters by William Sidney Mount and his brother Shepard Alonzo Mount. This show runs from March 1st through May 4th, 2014. Finally, the newly named Victoria Costigan gallery will feature Jackson Pollock’s Prints: Works from the Pollock-Krasner House. Although best known for his poured, abstract paintings, Pollock also created many works in print media that are not as widely known. This exhibition, curated by Director of the PollockKrasner House, Helen Harrison, contains 12 such prints and will be on display from March 1st through June 8th, 2014.
Summer exhibitons will include Long Island at War and a special exhibition, in celebration of the 75th anniversary, LIM @ 75: Treasures from the Permanent Collection, highlighting 75 rarely seen paintings, carriages and artifacts. In addition, visitors will delight at a new outdoor series featuring larger-than-life sculptures on museum grounds by two Long Island artists. Visitors are invited to look for new programs and more details on exhibitions throughout the coming year and to help us celebrate 75 years of Long Island history. All-State Selections The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Forty-Seven (347) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the approximately 900 students in NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than one third of the total number of students selected for All State. Students will gather to rehearse and perform in Rochester as NYSSMA celebrates its 81st year of advocating for quality music education in schools throughout New York State. This Conference will mark the sixteenth (16th) in a row to be held at the Rochester Convention Center, and will feature Nancy Ditmer, president of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME)
as keynote speaker. ``We are very excited about returning to Rochester – it’s like a second home for NYSSMA,” said president Marc E. Greene. ``More than one thousand music educators from all over the State will attend for professional development opportunities, seminars, performances, and valuable lesson materials for use in their classes and rehearsals. Among the highlights of our conference, however, are the many wonderful performances by our All State students.” The conference will be held from December 5th through December 8th and feature Saturday evening performances by the NYSSMA All State Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra and Women’s Chorus in the Eastman Theater. The All State Instrumental and Vocal
Jazz Ensembles will be featured in the Rochester Plaza Ballroom. Sunday morning, the Eastman Theater will again play host to NYSSMA’s All State Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Mixed Chorus. Students selected for the All State Instrumental and Vocal Jazz Ensembles will also be featured at special performances in Albany during Music In Our Schools Month in March, 2014. NYSSMA will offer professional development opportunities and valuable lesson materials that teachers can use with their students. “We will also be honored to showcase the talents of the school music ensembles from areas across New York State invited to perform,” Greene said.

Decking The Halls By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in
the minute the plates are cleared from Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a slow process, but a fun one nonetheless. And for me, this will be my first holiday accumulating Christmas novelties to display in my own cozy living quarters. There’s something about holiday decorations that immediately brighten up any room, or street, or neighborhood… the magic of the season personified. I remember celebrating Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house and being positively mesmerized by the – what seemed to me – gigantic Christmas tree,
completely decked out in lights, ornaments, ribbons and bows, with piles of perfectly wrapped presents nestled underneath. There were the motion figurines in the windows, the collectible Snowbabies village… all signs that the holiday season had officially arrived. I hope that this year, this apartment, this Christmas tree, will all be the beginning of my own holiday traditions, to be built upon with each passing year. Little by little, one ornament at a time, bringing the magic of Christmas home.

Project Lifesaver Representatives of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office recently delivered a Project Lifesaver transmitter bracelet to Kim Covell of Watermill whose son has autism. The start-up cost of getting the device for the family was underwritten by the East End Police Foundation, which has recently partnered with
the Sheriff’s Office to help promote the initiative. Ms. Covell is the founder of the Flying Point Foundation for Autism. Project Lifesaver is a tracking system for Suffolk County residents who care for children or adults that have the propensity to wander from their homes or care facilities. The system is
designed to assist law enforcement and rescue agencies with locating lost or missing persons. Registered Project Lifesaver clients wear a personalized one ounce battery-operated transmitter bracelet that emits an automatic tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. Each transmitter has a
range of several miles, and has its own frequency, enabling Deputy Sheriffs to positively locate and identify a missing person. To date, the Sheriff’s Office has purchased a total of ten tracking units with asset forfeiture funds, and recently expanded the number of Deputy Sheriffs trained to use the equipment.

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is inviting high school-aged orchestral musicians and choral singers to audition for the July 8th through 21st, 2014 performance tour of The People’s Republic of China. The two-week tour will include performances and visits to Beijing, Chengdu, Xi’an, Yangshuo, Guilin and Shanghai. The tour will also explore major attractions such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Terracotta Warrior Museum, and the Giant Panda Research Base. An optional, additional week of touring in Hawaii will be offered. MYO ensembles have embarked on several international tours over the years with concert visits to Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Australia
and New Zealand, Spain, Italy, and Greece. Combining the spirit of Thanksgiving season with the Attitudes Of Gratitude initiative, Brook Avenue School and Physical Education teacher Mrs. Katy Schomburg wanted to teach students about the value of thanking their
country. She told the staff about her grandfather, a patriot and a gentleman, who showed her how to honor our country’s flag by treating it with great r e s p e c t - - s p e c i f i c a l l y, handling and folding it correctly.
Working with small groups of students each week, Mrs. Schomburg taught students the same skills her grandfather taught her. The students did extremely well and took great pride in learning about caring for our flag.

Bay Shore residents and philanthropists Frank and Karen Boulton have long been committed to helping to develop and nurture the Bay Shore community, often through their generous support of the arts and student activities. 9/11 Memorial Garden located at Bay Shore Middle School. Congratulations to Jackie Pasquerella on being named the 2013-2014 Bay Shore Girls Varsity Softball Coach. A Bay Shore native and one of the most successful softball players in Bay Shore history, Jackie Pasquerella graduated in 1997 with All-American honors. Jackie went on to spend her collegiate softball career at Villanova University, where she garnered All Big-East and All-Region honors. Her softball career continued overseas, in Italy, as a
member of Team Sorano in the Italian Professional Federation. In 2004, Pasquerella was drafted into the National Professional Fastpitch league as a member of the NY/NJ Juggernaut. She was a fixture at third base throughout her seven year professional career with the Juggernaut, the New England Riptide and the Akron Racers. Coach “Paz”, as her athletes have come to call her, was a three-time AllNPF selection, a two-time NPF Champion and earned
NPF Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2007 (no errors in 38 games). Pasquerella has spent the last 10 years as a Physical Education teacher in the Bay Shore School District. She has served as a JV Girls Basketball coach, Assistant Varsity Girls Basketball coach and JV Softball coach. Most recently, as Assistant Varsity Softball coach, Jackie helped lead the team to the Class AA New York State title in 2010.

THANKSGIVING FOR THOSE IN NEED - At Saint Patrick School, each class from nursery to 8th grade brought in all the trimmings needed for a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. Each basket and a gift certificate to buy a turkey, was sent to a family for Thanksgiving. The students had a chance to decorate the boxes and they delivered them before the Thanksgiving holiday.
PLANETARIUM VISIT - In November, third graders at South Country School visited the Vanderbilt Planetarium and Museum to deepen their knowledge about the solar system. This adventure aligned with their Science curriculum and helped explain how the sun, planets and constellations work together in the sky. At the end of the day, every teacher and student said the field trip was an “out of this world” experience.

NATIVE JOURNEY - Students at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School enjoyed an in-house field trip on Native American cultures of the Eastern Woodlands and Plains during the Journeys Into American Indian Territory workshop on November 21st. The program, which supplemented the school’s social studies curriculum, included stories, games, songs, dances, a fully constructed longhouse and a museum of Native American artifacts, which was assembled on-site.

As part of its efforts on behalf of members of the U.S. armed forces stationed overseas, the East Islip Middle School Builders Club gathered at the East Islip Post Office on October 15th to meet with Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, who generously paid for the week’s shipping of
seven care package boxes. Also in attendance were four members of the Suffolk County Detachment Marine Corps League: Frank Dunn, Leo Maese, Carmine Raineri and Luis F. Sanchez. “All of the students who participate are really helping to send a ‘taste of
home’ to the service men and women who are 8,000 miles away,” said teacher Rena Costello, who helped coordinate the donation efforts for military personnel, and who noted how the thought of caring for the troops has become second nature for the East Islip school community.

The Suffolk County Library Association presented Celia Ann Vollmer, a Brentwood Public Library senior clerk, with their 2013 President’s Award at Villa Lombardi on Thursday, November 14th. Ms. Vollmer is a dedicated library professional who served as an SCLA board member for eight years and treasurer for the past four years. The President’s Award is given by the SCLA president to an individual who has gone above and beyond in the field of librarianship or passionate service to the association. President Joanne Albano
cited Ms. Vollmer’s leadership in dealing with SCLA becoming the first regional chapter of the New York Library Association as a primary reason for choosing her as this year’s award recipient. “Everyday was a new challenge for us and some days even brought us two, three and four challenges, but being the person Celia is, every challenge was met head on and her professionalism never wavered,” stated Ms. Albano at the awards dinner. In addition to Ms. Vollmer’s professional dedication, she was
also praised for her commitment to community service. She has served as an American Red Cross shelter operations manager at the Brentwood High School in recent disasters such as Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene, disaster action team captain for a Hempstead apartment fire in 2012, and a responder to a recent Brentwood warehouse fire. The Brentwood PTA, Eastern Suffolk BOCES and Pronto Long Island have also been beneficiaries of her volunteer work.

PATH TO COMMON CORE - Gardiner Manor School teachers recently had the opportunity to spend a day with Dr. Anita Archer at an Eastern Suffolk BOCES workshop entitled Explicit Instruction: Path To Common Core. The workshop detailed clear guidelines for identifying key concepts, strategies, skills, and routines to teach, designing and delivering effective lessons, and giving students opportunities to practice and master new material. Going To The Dogs Seventh-grade students in Naomi Sauer’s Family and Consumer Science classes at Islip Middle School celebrated Thanksgiving by going to the dogs. With Project Dog Biscuit, the students
prepared more than 100 dog biscuits and donated them to the Islip Animal Shelter. “The students worked on this activity as a community service project to understand the importance of giving back and donating to others,”
said Mrs. Sauer. Making their dough from scratch using products safe for animals, the students rolled and baked the biscuits and used boneshaped cookie cutters.
THANKSGIVING SHOW - On Friday, November 22nd, Fifth Avenue School 1st graders performed in the annual Thanksgiving show. Students dressed in costumes as Pilgrims, Native Americans and turkeys, and sang songs that told the story of the first Thanksgiving. The performance ended with the singing of a beautiful song entitled, I’m Grateful, which helped the students to reflect upon what they are thankful for.

ROCKIN THE 50TH - On Wednesday, November 20th, Brook Avenue School Kindergarteners celebrated the 50th day of school by participating in a number of fun learning activities. Some students wore colorful paper crowns featuring the number 50 while other students and teachers dressed like it was the 1950s again. Classroom learning centers incorporated Math activities involving the number 50 and some students tried to keep a hula-hoop circling 50 times. The Kindergarteners are halfway to the 100th day of school and are doing great. They will now start thinking about the 100 objects they will incorporate into beautiful posters celebrating 100 days of friendship and learning.

SPIRIT OF GIVING - In keeping with South Country School’s tradition of giving back, a school-wide food drive helped to fill 30 Thanksgiving baskets this year. In order to complete these Thanksgiving meals, hundreds of dollars in turkeys and supermarket gift cards were donated by South Country staff and families. These baskets were given as gifts to some of our South Country families in need. All our parent volunteers, who helped assemble and wrap the baskets, were grateful to help extend their hearts and hands for the benefit of Bay Shore children and their families.
Like many graduates of East Islip High School, Alexandra Konnerth wasted little time in giving back to her community and the world. Konnerth, currently a freshman at SUNY Cortland, left right after graduation this past June for a 10-day International Servant service trip to Bosnia-Herzegovina, participating in the 2013 Friendship Camps. During the trip, sponsored by the New Jersey Synod of

the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Konnerth traveled with a group of 17 other youths and adults as part of an NGO to help children in Bosnia overcome segregation and the wounds of war from the 1992-1996 conflicts in the Yugoslavian civil war. The team visited schools and orphanages, working with thirdthrough seventh-graders, giving out athletic and craft supplies, and providing
positive experiences through art, music, drama and game activities in nine Friendship Camps. To date, the program has helped more than 24,000 children in approximately 200 camps. Konnerth’s interest in giving back through the Friendship Camp program was sparked when she heard stories about previous International Servant trips taken by her cousins. She conducted
her own fundraising for the trip, including the raffling of a pair of Taylor Swift concert tickets. In several after-school “Bags for Bosnia” decorating sessions, she enlisted fellow East Islip students to help create individual gifts for the children and teachers at the Bosnian camps. With the help of East Islip’s National Honor Society, Konnerth and her classmates decorated more than 200 canvas bags,

luthier to have it ‘remade.’ My cello ‘Eve’ – as I named her because it was a new start to the way I looked at my playing – has since performed at Carnegie Hall with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, along with other groups such as East Islip’s symphony orchestra, string orchestra and chamber orchestra, and with a quartet at the FTK Black Tie Gala for four years in a row.” She also is an accomplished guitarist, learning the instrument during her freshman year in East Islip and later performing at the school’s talent show, Embers Coffeehouse and Earth Day events, and with the Peer Leaders. “I had taken a liking to guitar because of Taylor Swift,” she explained, “as well as the aspect of it being more of a social instrument, one that I could play and make conversation with more people just by playing a few songs.” This came in handy during her volunteer work in Bosnia. “While I was there, I played guitar in front of a couple of kids at a camp in Mostar,” she recalled. “Their faces lit up immediately as some began singing along to the chorus of the song ‘Hallelujah.’ It was one of the high points of my trip, and helped me appreciate my beginnings at East Islip High even more.” While Konnerth has her eye firmly on her future, her days in East Islip remain close to her thoughts. “There are so many wonderful highlights from EI,” she said. “For example, being able to walk into almost any classroom and have a teacher eagerly prepared and enthusiastic to teach and help you succeed to your best.”

This notable member of the Class of 2013 made the most of her time at East Islip, where she first attended John F. Kennedy Elementary School starting in fourth grade. At the high school, she participated as a member of the National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society, Peer Leaders, the Drama Club, the chamber orchestra, the varsity girls tennis team, and as a morning announcer. An outstanding student, she was awarded the Paul Snyder Memorial Scholarship, as well as the Kiwanis of Islip/Bay Shore Scholarship, the Teachers Committee Scholarship and the Pat Drance Scholarship. Music has always been a significant interest, beginning with cello, something that has been part of her family through many generations. “Cello has been in my life since fourth grade,” said Konnerth. “When I became serious about playing during my freshman year of high school, my parents offered to take my greatgrandfather’s cello to a
