All Sales Are Final By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not a fan of shopping lists. My approach is more along the lines of wander around select stores for hours, aimlessly scanning the departments for inspiration for that “perfect,” thoughtful gift. The funniest part is, it works. At the beginning of the Christmas season, I pretty much compile a list of people I need to buy for, followed by any suggestions or subtle hints that may have been dropped throughout the year. These are generally few and far between.

The rest is left up to that aforementioned “inspiration.” While my system may not be the most efficient in terms of time, it ensures that I don’t miss anything in my survey of stores. I refuse to simply buy something just for the sake of crossing off a gift on the checklist. May as well just re-gift then, no? It’s cheaper. Speaking of price, it seems inevitable – for me, at least – that the second I find exactly what I’m looking for, it shows up somewhere else for less. Considerably less. Like, along the lines of

25% off, free shipping and, oh, let’s throw in something free along with it, less. The kind of deal that you should really take advantage of, while returning your previous so-called “bargain” for a full refund. But, as is the case with most things done during the rush of the holiday season, we buy on impulse, we occasionally pay too much in the process – and we don’t care all that much, because, hey, Christmas comes but once a year, right? Right. Just remember that when the credit card bills come due in January.

DISNEY WORLD Walt Disney World is the place to be for a vacation, or a celebration. Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is a wonderful place comprised of four spectacular theme parks. The names are Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. Magic Kingdom is a magical place. There is so much to do. You can go visit the castle or stop and see the parade on Main Street. You can even take pictures with Disney princesses and characters. Next, we have Animal Kingdom where you can take a safari ride to see all of the animals from A-Z.

Then there is Hollywood Studios - it is my personal favorite. It is filled with music, love and happiness. If you want to see a great play or musical, the place to go is Hollywood Studios. Lastly is Epcot. Epcot is all about the future. The ride Spaceship Earth (also known as the big Epcot ball) is where you learn about the past and you can invent your own future. The parks are nice, but there is much more to Disney than the parks. There is horseback riding at Circle D Ranch. Then you have surrey bike riding at Saratoga Springs. You can also do arts and crafts at Saratoga Springs.

There are also horse drawn carriage rides at Port Orleans. Walt Disney also has special cuisine. Their food has real quality. One of the restaurants at Walt Disney world is the California Grill at the contemporary resort. At the California Grill, they serve food from all over the world. My favorite is their sushi. Then there is Bama’s at Animal Kingdom Lodge. At Bama’s, they serve some African meals and some American meals. So go visit Walt Disney World because Disney Vacations + Family = Excitement and Magical Memories

Preparing A Feast In a longstanding East Islip High School tradition, more than 60 students – including members of the new Culinary Arts and Hospitality Career Academy – participated in preparing and serving a Thanksgiving feast in the school’s kitchen classroom, guided by teacher Kelly

Schwender. More than 250 hot meals were served by the students for their fellow classmates, district administrators and visiting family members. “This is always a wonderful opportunity for our students to invite their parents and grandparents and show them how they

worked together to prepare for the Thanksgiving feast,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the guidance director. “The students enjoy being involved in the culinary program and this event truly showcased their skills.”

Making Lives Brighter Mrs. Filiberto’s first grade class at St. Mary School in East Islip recently made the lives of soldiers much brighter. In school, they were learning how to write

a thank you note. They decided to write letters to men and woman who serve in the armed forces. Their letters were given to relatives, parents and the local library, where they

would be forwarded to the VA. The children learned about bravery and commitment.

Career Discovery Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter was delighted to have the opportunity to speak with students at Bay Shore Middle School for their annual 6th Grade Career Discovery Program. Each year the Bay Shore Middle School hosts the 6th Grade Career Discovery Program to teach students about all the different

careers to which they can aspire. Over 50 speakers were on hand to discuss their careers and the path they had to take to get there, and students are encouraged to ask questions of any of the speakers. The goal of the annual event is to teach students that what they learn in school is important to their future goals.

Treasurer Carpenter commented, “The 6th Grade Career Discovery Program is a wonderful event that helps motivate the students to study hard so that they can pursue the career of their choice, and be open to exploring different career choices. I am very pleased that I was asked to be a part of this event.”

Nearly a dozen Suffolk County Community College Culinary program students will jump out of the frying pan into the fire to compete in a Choppedlike culinary competition in which students will receive a mystery basket of ingredients and must turn them into a mouthwatering dish. The competition is similar to the popular reality television show “Chopped” airing on the Food

Network. The judges -- five of Suffolk’s faculty chefs -will evaluate each student’s creation on creativity, presentation and taste. The public is invited to witness the student chefs in action. Will the chefs be as cool as a cucumber? Can they cut the mustard? Who will bring home the bacon? Stay tuned! The top chef will win a seven-night stay at the

Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater, Fla., and an opportunity to work under the supervision of the resort’s executive chef. Lauded for his successful career experience, East Islip High School student Chris Watts was recently recognized at a Board of Education meeting. Watts, a student in the high school’s career development class, obtained a work placement last year at the Islandia Marriott. For six months, he and several of his

largest public university in New England. Explaining his choice to suit up for the Minutemen, he noted his admiration for the UMass staff and players. He has not yet decided on a major. A varsity starter on the lacrosse squad since he was a freshman, Sconone has earned All-County and AllDivision honors. He cited the dedication of his parents, Bob and Maureen, as a major factor in his success. Sconone also served as captain of the school’s varsity football team, helping the Redmen win the county title and reach the Long Island championship finals on November 30th.

Two families who’ve worked tirelessly to provide the best lives for their families have brand new homes in time for the holidays, thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk. At the age of 20, Kimberly Butler joined the U.S. Army. She has dedicated her life to giving back to the people who served alongside her. She now works as a jobs coordinator

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has named Suffolk Community College Men’s Soccer Coach Frank Vertullo as its Personality of the Month for December. Vertullo, 34, of Babylon, coached the Suffolk County Community College Sharks to the National Championship last month, a repeat of his 2010 accomplishment. Entering the junior college Final Four as the fourth seed with a 19-4-0 record, Suffolk played number one seed and host, Herkimer Community College, on November 14th.

Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said Coach Vertullo is an inspiration not only to student athletes, but to the College Community. “Coach Vertullo’s leadership, inspiration, and ability to motivate has helped deliver two National Championships to Suffolk County Community College by our very talented and accomplished student-athletes,” McKay said. “Congratulations,” he added. “There are so many factors that are involved in winning multiple national championships. Consistency, recruiting, experience and creating a family atmosphere within the program are the key components. The success of the program has also helped in the recruiting process of potential student-athletes wanting to leave home to play at Suffolk even without the convenience of campus housing. Vertullo played at Dowling College from 1997 to 2000 and was Conference Rookie of the Year, All-Conference three times, captain of the team for three seasons and starting center back. He also played for the New York Freedoms of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) in 2002 and 2003. Vertullo served as Dowling’s assistant coach from 2001 to 2006, helping lead the Golden Lions to four NCAA Division 2 Final Fours and the 2006 National Championship.
