Did You Know? While Orville and Wilbur Wright, otherwise known as the Wright Brothers, may be the most widely recognized brothers associated with aeronautics, a pair of French brothers’ accomplishments in the 18th century should not be overlooked. According to Brittanica.com, in 1782, nearly a century before the Wright Brothers were even born, Joseph and Étienne Montgolfier discovered that heated air, when collected inside a large lightweight paper or fabric bag, caused the bag to rise into the air. Various successful experiments preceded the Montgolfiers’ flight on November 21, 1783. That flight, a 5.5 mile journey over Paris that lasted roughly 25 minutes, was the first manned untethered flight in history, firmly establishing the Montgolfier brothers as true pioneers in the field of aeronautics.

Joy Through the Brentwood Schools BUFSD to Host Drive-Thru Winter Wonderland and Tree Lighting Event to Celebrate Holiday Season Brentwood High School in the Brentwood Union Free School District will be hosting its 7th annual community wide holiday tree lighting ceremony as a drive-thru Winter Wonderland extravaganza. The event, which will take place on December 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., will feature the district’s annual Christmas tree lighting as well as a myriad of holiday theme light displays for

attendees to enjoy. In their cars, students, families, and friends of the Brentwood community will celebrate the joy of the holiday season as they enter from the district gate on 3rd Avenue, extending to 7th Avenue. Please note, to ensure the health and safety of all, pedestrians will not be permitted to participate. Local businesses and organizations have

collaborated with the district to generously provide assistance for the event, including the Brentwood Fire Department, Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC), and various district clubs and teams. The community wide event began six years ago as a way to increase family involvement in the district.

Three Islip Seniors Sign To Play College Sports

In a Nov. 12 ceremony at the school’s auxiliary gymnasium, three superlative Islip High School senior studentathletes signed national

Over the years Lewin’s has donated over 250,000 pounds of food and this year The Rocky Point Rotary Club

handled the organization and distribution. Rotary members Glenn Frost, Andy Kepert and Kevin Mann collected food and delivered it to soup kitchens. Some of this year’s recipients included Long Island Cares, KO Cares, Friendship Kitchen, Gordon Heights Pantry, Fountain Pantry and North Shore Methodist Church.

The 12th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive for Island Harvest, which took place on November 20, collected 3,157 turkeys, 28,000 pounds of food and raised more than $17,000 to date, to support Long Islanders experiencing food insecurity, an issue which is escalating resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic. For the first time, this year’s turkey drive was contactless to ensure that community residents and businesses were able to safely drop off their holiday donations. For those who were unable to make a donation to the drive, Bethpage Federal Credit Union has set up an online donation page, where monetary contributions can be made directly to Island Harvest. Celebrating the Class of 2021 at East Islip’s Senior Breakfast East Islip High School’s Class of 2021 was celebrated on Nov. 4 and 5 with a socially distanced Senior Breakfast. Students were treated to bagels, muffins, cookies and refreshments. Senior superlatives were announced according to the winner’s cohort and more than $1,000 in raffles

were won by 50 members of the class, 25 winners per cohort. At the event, senior advisers Kate Boucher and Marissa Quigley announced that the Class of 2021 would be the first class to have an East Islip High School hallway dedicated as the “Senior Hallway.” The hallway will

start at the sports lobby and end at the area of the school’s Forum. The advisers have activities planned to personalize the hallway for the senior class, starting with the display of a 10-foot banner signed by every member of the Class of 2021.

History of the Dreidel Dreidels are especially popular during the eightday Jewish festival of Chanukah. Even though they may seem like novelty items for children, dreidels have a rich and interesting history. In ancient times, Greek Syrians infiltrated areas where many practicing Jews resided. Over time, the Greek Syrians became more oppressive and tried to convert the Jewish people to their pagan beliefs. However, their efforts were not very successful. As a result, the Greek Syrians established laws that outlawed ritual commandments and the study of the Torah. It is widely believed that Jewish people used dreidels to fool

the Greeks into thinking they were just playing a game. Instead, rolls of the dreidel corresponded to numerical equivalents that could represent elements of the Jewish faith, according to My Jewish Learning. Others say the dreidel was a distraction. Children of Israel would learn the Torah in outlying areas and forests. When Greek patrols were nearby, the children would hide their

texts and take out dreidels instead, says Chabad.org. Today the dreidel is a token of the Chanukah miracle. In Israel, the letters upon the dreidel are Nun, Gimel, Hay, and Pay, which stand for the Hebrew equivalent of “a great miracle happened here.” Outside of israel, the last letter is Shin, which transforms the phrase into “a great miracle happened there.”
