uring the month of October, East Islip Middle School’s eighth-grade Leaders Club sponsored a change drive for UNICEF to help those less fortunate children around the world in need of fresh water and medical supplies. In this year’s expanded fundraiser, the 60 club members and adviser Diane Wahrenburg collected a total of $1,210.44 to benefit UNICEF. Thanks to all those who participated in this worthwhile cause.

Seeking Crew Leader Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk is looking to fill an AmeriCorps Construction Crew Leader to assist with home builds throughout the County. Habitat, in partnership with AmeriCorps members, hopes to reach its goal of completing 12 new home builds. Habitat also anticipates to host at least two community events and will utilize members to spread the word about homeownership programs and encourage community members to get involved as volunteers
on worksites or to apply to be family partners. The Construction Crew Leader is an integral part of building homes and completes hands on construction tasks such as demolition, site prep, framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, roofing, finish carpentry and landscaping. The Construction Crew Leader works with new and gut rehab homes, as well as A Brush With Kindness (ABWK), Critical Home Repair (CHR) and weatherization projects.

Many people judge how I look and assume things about me that is totally wrong. I have lots of tales to tell. Even the people who think they know me aren’t even close. Let’s begin at the beginning. When I was born, I was named Fernando*. My mom was happy that she had another son. I was her third. Shortly after, my father started abusing my two brothers and was sent to jail. At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. Later, when I found out about it, I hated that guy. I don’t even consider him a good father because of what he has done. I learned to hate my own
name because I was named after him. I decided to use my creativity to rename myself. When I tell my tale to others and they laugh, do I feel bad? No, because words are words and they don’t affect me. My talent for writing was sparked by a close friend named Amy*. She is very kind toward others and a little shy. We have been friends for a long time; we respect and trust each other to the max. We both share the love of writing. At first I felt writing was useless work. After a couple of tries, I gave in and found it fun to write. I think it’s unique to express myself in words. My hobbies, besides writing,

Once the purchases are made, there’s the small matter of gift-wrapping. Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.
Talent, indeed. I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner. So, this Christmas Eve, if you happen to be out making some last minute purchases, don’t stress out – those men standing on line next to you are just getting started. Plus, they still have to wrap. I go there three days a we ek and walk the dogs that are there, hoping th at one day someone will co me in and take them home. Many of these dogs are large breeds an d very excited to see anyo ne that shows up to give them some love. To everyone, I say pleas e adopt a shelter pet (cats to o), and if you aren’t looking to adopt, you could volunteer to help mak e their stay at the shelter just a little bit bette r. Eagle Scout to Be Honored James C. Mellett successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on May 13th, officially making him the 53rd Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. James’ Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, January 5th, 2016, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road in East Islip. James Mellett has been a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle,” James served the Troop as Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Librarian, Scribe, Troop Guide, and Order of the Arrow Representative. James has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending two National Jamborees, the BSA Anniversary Jamboree at Ft AP Hill, and the first BSA Jamboree at the new
Summit Bechtel Reserve. In addition, he experienced the National Boy Scout High Adventure venue – Florida Sea Base, where James spent seven days with his crew sailing and scuba diving in the Florida Keys. James also attended and was a summer camper at Camp Wakpominee in Ft. Ann, NY for five summer seasons and attended the following unique Troop 205 campouts to Gettysburg (twice), Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, MD. James had many fine accomplishments while in the Troop, including having perfect attendance for two years, a seven year member of the Troop’s “Top 10,” marched in seven Memorial Day Parades in Great River, participated in seven different Great River Firehouse Clean up days, and attended most Eagle Projects. James actually earned a total of 28 merit badges. The Service Project that James developed, planned, and constructed with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends
and family members, was a retaining wall and team photography site for the East Islip Soccer Club in East Islip. As James reflects on his Scouting experience, he said, “Throughout my years of Scouting, I have met many people and gained many values that I shall cherish through the rest of my life. When people are committed to something they absolutely love, they say, ‘It’s a way of life.’ This is true about Scouting with me. I have dedicated myself to almost eight amazing years with Troop 205, and hope to continue my support to this wonderful organization.” James went on to say, “The values I have learned are amplified because of the confidence and support I received from my fellow Scouts cheering me on to become a better Scout, a better leader, and a better person.” James is currently a sophomore at the University of Maine, where he is studying engineering.
During the month of October, East Islip Middle School’s eighth-grade Leaders Club sponsored a change drive for UNICEF to help less fortunate children around the world
in need of fresh water and medical supplies. In this year’s expanded fundraiser, the 60 club members and adviser Diane Wahrenburg collected a total of is $1,210.44
to benefit UNICEF, and a homeroom contest to donate the most weight in change was won by teacher Janice Laube’s class.

LOCAL TAKES THE LEAD - Thirteen year old Nicole Serino of Great River will appear in the leading role of “Clara” in Frank Ohman’s New York Dance Theatre production of “The Nutcracker” at Hofstra University. Nicole is an eighth grader at the East Islip Middle School and has been studying ballet at the Ohman School of Ballet in Commack for four years. She is part of a cast of eighty children, pre-professional and professional dancers who bring this classic holiday story ballet to life on the stage of the John Cranford Adams Playhouse.
Eagle Proclamation
Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory presented William P. Weiss with a proclamation at his Eagle Scout Award Ceremony, held Sunday, November 22nd at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Brentwood. William is a member of Boy Scout Troop 292, based in Brentwood. Eagle Scout is the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of
America scouting program. With this achievement, William is among the small percentage of young men in the Boy Scouts of America who have reached this prestigious level. Since the inception of the Eagle Scout award in 1912, only about 2 percent of eligible Scouts have earned this honor. William’s Eagle Scout project consisted of constructing and installing
shelving in three rooms at the Seatuck Environmental Association, located in the Suffolk County Environmental Center in Islip. William led troop members and family in clearing debris and preparing the rooms for installation, totaling 48 man hours. A total of $272 was raised through a carwash; all other needed materials were donated.

Members of the Islip Town Board recently selected four local charities to receive funds collected at the annual Entenmann’s Great South Bay Run. Each year, the run is held in the Town of Islip with the help of the organization Tri-ing for Kids, a nonprofit organization with the mission of motivating people to achieve a personal goal of completing endurance
events for a cause much bigger than medal or prize. This organization, led by Doug Rabin, lets individuals compete for a cause, raising funds to be donated after each race. This year’s race was held on October 3rd, and even despite poor weather conditions, Tri-ing for Kids was able to raise enough money to donate $750 to the four charities of the Councilmember’s
choosing. This year’s charities chosen were The Morgan Center, Emily’s Gift, Veterans of Foreign War of the U.S. R. Murray and C.R. Day Jr. Post 8357, and the EJ Autism Foundation. The Town Board congratulated and thanked members of each organization by presenting them with a Town of Islip Certificate of Recognition and a large check.

Toys for Tots Donation Drive patriotic citizens and community leaders. Please help your community by dropping off a donation at Westy Self Storage in East Northport located at 4049 Jericho Turnpike. Toys for Tots began in 1947 when the wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When they realized that no such organization existed, they decided to start one. That Christmas, a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. That pilot program was so successful that the Marine Corps
adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign and since then has distributed over 370 million toys to more than 173 million children. Ticket Amnesty Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced in late October that the Islip Town Board had authorized a parking ticket amnesty program. That program began on November 15th, 2015 and is coming to an end. The last day for this program will be December 31st, 2015.
Under the program the town will allow scofflaws to pay only 60 percent of their fines and penalties on unpaid parking tickets issued between January 1st, 2008 and September 30th, 2015. This is the town’s first parking ticket amnesty program in three years and is being implemented
by FBS Inc., of Hempstead, the town’s authorized collection service. “We’d like to remind our residents that this amnesty period is coming to a close. We encourage residents to take advantage of this program before it is too late to do so,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Westy Self Storage continues its support of the Toys for Tots Donation Drive for the 17th year. This drive will run until December 18th. Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide storage for the donations as well as assist with final delivery. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the local communities. A shiny new toy delivers the message of hope to needy youngsters. This act of kindness will help motivate the children to grow into responsible, productive,

Learning on the Job Virtual Enterprise International, a required course in Islip High School’s new Business Academy, directly simulates the experience of creating a business from an idea, with students developing a business plan, opening a new virtual business and follow the product through production for eventual sales to other student firms in the Virtual Enterprise organization. The Virtual Enterprise simulated business environment, facilitated by teacher Renee Clock, was made possible via office furniture donations from Tech Data. The VEI “employees” are involved in actual “on-the-job” work experiences, from purchasing, sales and marketing, to accounting and personnel, and quickly developed their business idea, Tranquell Beverages. The only difference between the VE and an actual business is that no material goods are produced or legal tender
exchanged. However, services are provided, as the VE generates the documents and information needed to do business with other VE classes in New York City, other states and abroad. Students have the opportunity to work in one or more of the departments in the VE organization. In each department, students are expected to work individually and as a member of a team to fulfill the responsibilities and tasks associated with their department, including focusing on such careerready skills as developing initiative, creativity and responsibility; improving teamwork; enhancing oral and written communication; budgeting and finance; and e-commerce and website design. “The goal of the Virtual Enterprise experience is to weave together several academic disciplines and occupational subjects, thereby overcoming
fragmentation of subjects,” said Clock. “By working in the VE, students will better understand how learning has relevance to real life. The goal is to create a learning environment that, through a series of activities, integrates school and work to enhance learning. In effect, the VE will drive the learning, the applications, and the educational experiences and opportunities. Through experiences in the VE, students will come to see that there exists an important connection between all disciplines.” Both of Islip’s new Academy programs – the Business and STEM Academies – have completed the Career and Technical Education endorsement application process. This endorsement will allow students graduating from the school’s Academies to receive a CTE designation on their high school diplomas.
Nutcracker Coming to Staller
The Seiskaya Ballet’s Nutcracker has become a perennial holiday favorite on Long Island. This year’s staging of the Nutcracker is again scheduled for six performances: December 18th through 21st at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts. This classical ballet rendition has earned praise from critics and audiences
alike. Also, a recent sleep study of teenagers found that greater variability in day-to-day sleep habits was associated with higher calories consumed throughout the day. Giving Back It’s the holiday season so families are getting set for decorating Christmas trees, menorahs, shopping, caroling plus receiving mail from non-profit organizations looking for donations. But the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is that rare non-profit group not looking for money and is actually giving it back during the holidays. Eastern New York gave a dollar back for every registered player to each respective league to use it as they saw fit for the benefit of their players. So the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) received a check for $58,614 for their 58,614 players, the East Hudson Youth Soccer League
(EHYSL) received a check for $16,946, etc. “I stated that when I became President in 2010, we would bring fiscal responsibility to Eastern New York and I believe that our Board of Directors has done exactly that,” commented Eastern New York President Richard Christiano. “Our fiscal responsibility has now allowed us to give a rebate back for every player.” “This rebate further demonstrates the commitment of our Eastern New York state association to its member leagues,” commented LIJSL President Anthony Maresco. “East Hudson was very pleased that the Eastern New York Board

Summit a Success According to the American Cancer Society, in 2015 it is estimated that 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women and men. Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer for women which means that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. The Fifth Annual Breast Cancer Summit recently took place to address these statistics and to open dialogue with cancer experts. Jennifer Griffin, National Security Correspondent for Fox News Channel and breast cancer survivor, served as keynote speaker and presented a touching speech titled “Entering the Cancer War Zone.” “Fighting breast cancer is as much psychological as it is a physical fight. And the one thing I learned is that feeling beautiful through that process is very important and may even affect the outcome of the treatment,” explained
Griffin. For her efforts in the fight against cancer, Griffin received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the LI Breast Cancer Summit. The Breast Cancer Summit was created to assist those diagnosed with breast cancer, to bring together community and resources, and offer knowledge and support. The event attracts hundreds of attendees, including cancer experts, researchers, doctors, nurses, breast cancer survivors, and advocacy groups. The program covers such topics as innovative breast cancer treatment, the latest cancer research updates and care, and progress achieved in the fight against cancer.
The program was livestreamed for those who may not be well enough to attend the program in person. “It’s important to the practice to do our part and educate the community. We bring together patients, support groups, and medical professionals, and provide a public forum for learning and networking,” explains Roger L. Simpson, MD, FACS, president of Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. In 2009 Griffin received the news which would change her life and become the biggest battle she would ever fight. She was diagnosed with stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. After 17 rounds of chemotherapy,
a double mastectomy and radiation treatments, she was declared in remission. She is a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness. “Since my return to work after cancer, I have thrown myself into working with wounded warriors, especially amputees and those suffering from posttraumatic stress - perhaps we share a bit of common ground - scars inside and out....I may look fully healed but there are triggers that take me back to that traumatic time. Programs such as this Breast Cancer Summit are vitally important resources for those touched by this disease so we can learn what resources exist and how we can access them,” said Griffin. “I am
honored to be a part of such an important event that attracts leading experts who share insight and information with the public.” Griffin joined Fox News Channel (FNC) in October 1999 as a Jerusalem-based correspondent. Since 2007 Griffin has reported daily from the Pentagon where she questions senior military leaders, travels to war zones with the Joint Chiefs and Secretaries of Defense, and reports on all aspects of the military. Blood Donations Needed The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to end the year with real meaning by donating blood for hospital patients in need. Holiday activities, severe weather and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, can pull people away from their regular blood donation schedules. This creates a greater need for blood donations this time of year, especially around the winter holidays. To encourage donations, all those who come to donate December 23rd, 2015, through January
3rd, 2016, will get a longsleeve Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last. Jamie Czesak made her first blood donation on December 27th, 2013. “As I spent Christmas with my family, I realized how lucky I was to have my health and how we never really know when our last Christmas will be. I decided that I would face my fears and do one of the few things I can do to help save someone’s life donate blood.” Healthy donors with all blood types are needed,
especially those with types AB, O, B negative and A negative.
