East Islip High School’s varsity girls cross-country team earned its first league championship since 2009, going 6-0 in the regular season, and then on Oct. 28, won East Islip’s first division championship in school history by a convincing 29 points over their next competitors. During this incredible season, East Islip took first place in three different invitationals, the Jim Smith Invitational at Sunken Meadow on Sept. 11, the Xavier Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Sept. 25 and the Manhattan College Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park on Oct. 9.

At the latter, famed as the largest cross-country meet in the country, East Islip not only came in first but placed six runners in the top 36. Four members of the team were named AllLeague First Team: senior Joy Petersen, eighth grader Danielle Simonetti, junior Olivia Simonetti and senior Sam Tucci. Those four as well as seventh grader Kathryn Simonetti were named to the All-Division team. The deep squad is rounded out by eighth graders Kaylee Garatina and Grace Micali, freshmen Danielle Birner and Sophia Espinal, juniors Sarah

Birner and Hailey DeHaas, and seniors Gianna Motto and Jenna Scandale. “Day in and day out, the girls have been productive at the highest level,” coach John Reynolds said. “In an extremely difficult league, the girls went undefeated in convincing fashion. On the weekends, they dominated all invitationals they have run in. The girls put in tons of hard work over the summer and early fall to give themselves these wonderful opportunities, and have taken on all challenges with great class. They represent East Islip and run with EI Pride every day that they lace up their sneakers.”

Army Sergeants Discuss Robotics Three U.S. Army members – Staff Sgt. Alfred Simeone, an alumnus of East Islip’s Class of 2002; Staff Sgt. Matthew Petiprin; and Staff Sgt. Sawyer Taro – visited East Islip High School’s robotics and video

production/broadcast television classes on Nov. 23. The sergeants discussed their experiences in the military, including Army robotics programs and drone technology. The

presentation helped students in these courses make connections to several real-world applications of what they are currently learning in their respective technology courses.

She has exhibited her large-scale public works throughout the Northeast from Maine and Vermont to Virginia and Tennessee and exhibits her smaller sculptures in galleries across New York State and Long Island. NYC artist Kathy Levine makes art about the importance of the natural environment to our well-being. The pieces are handmade from recycled paper cast over natural objects like trees, bark, leaves, branches and other forms found in nature. She has exhibited her work and won awards across the country from Brooklyn to Michigan to Arizona and Yellowstone National Park. Recently, her work Prospect Park Red Oak was selected for inclusion in the 2020

The storm-hardening improvements include: ·Stronger poles: PSEG Long Island will replace some existing utility poles with stronger, more durable poles that are capable of withstanding winds up to 135 mph. The new poles will be approximately the same height as the existing poles, have a stronger base and will be placed no more than 5 feet from the current pole locations. PSEG Long Island will actively coordinate the removal of old poles with other utilities and municipalities. ·Narrow profiles: To help wires deflect falling limbs instead of catching them, PSEG Long Island will be installing shorter cross arms atop some poles. ·Stronger wire: Current wire will be replaced with more resilient and durable wire. ·Upgrading: PSEG Long Island will upgrade or replace deteriorated equipment as necessary. In 2021, the sections of circuits that are storm hardened have seen a 53% reduction in damage leading to outages compared to the rest of the distribution system. PSEG Long Island is improving the reliability of the energy grid in Brentwood, Copiague, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, West Babylon and Wyandanch. The storm hardening work on these three distribution circuits is part of many system improvements included in the “Power On” program. “Reliable electricity is more important than ever to our customers. Through Power On, PSEG Long Island is strengthening the electric lines that directly power homes and businesses, making them more resilient during storms,” said Peggy Keane, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Construction and Operations Services. “These infrastructure improvement projects in Brentwood, Copiague, Deer Park, Lindenhurst, West Babylon and Wyandanch are part of our ongoing, multiyear effort to continue to improve electric reliability for our customers.” Beginning in November and lasting for approximately three months, PSEG Long Island’s licensed and approved contractors will work along mainline distribution lines in three areas: Brentwood and Deer Park; Copiague and Lindenhurst; and West Babylon and Wyandanch. East Islip Wins Suffolk County Football Championship

In a thrilling title game that went down to the wire, second-seeded East Islip High School vanquished the No. 1 seed Sayville on Nov. 18, winning 35-28 to earn the Suffolk Division III championship. East Islip quarterback Derek Burrell, who East Islip coach Sal Ciampi called “the greatest single player in East Islip football history,” had a game for

the ages, finishing with 178 yards on 20 carries, scoring three touchdowns, and completing seven of eight passes for another 116 yards. Burrell wowed the 3,300-strong crowd at Stony Brook University’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium with a 69-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and when the game was tied with 26 seconds left in the fourth quarter, he took the

ball and ran for a 31-yard winning touchdown. Other highlights included a key Leo Lopez interception and a Cooper Parkinson 96-yard fumble return for a go-ahead TD. East Islip (10-1) will play the winner of PlainedgeBethpage for the Long Island Class III title on Nov. 26 at Hofstra University.

the Missionettes Girls Ministries Program, a Christ-centered mentoring program for girls through the Assembly of God churches. Joanna and Rebecca were required to do projects for every unit they completed since middle school, where in High School

they completed a total of 20 service related projects such as volunteering with food pantry organizations, donating baby items to a Life Center and filling boxes for Operation Christmas Child in addition to focusing on building character and their spiritual walk.

The Islip Board of Education and central administration announced the tenure of seven faculty members, marking the most important milestone in their educational careers. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the district was unable to recognize the recipients publicly in the spring and took the opportunity this fall to celebrate the occasion. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dennis O’Hara

Islip Faculty Donates Thanksgiving Meals To Community Islip. Each year, the Town and Islip’s Food for Hope create baskets containing traditional Thanksgiving dinner food, including a turkey. These were created through collections gathered through Islip’s Food for Hope donation

and food drive. After collecting the baskets, Dr. O’Callaghan and Ms. Clock distributed them to Islip School District families in need with the assistance of the school social workers.

Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certified”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism. Please read on for detailed information about their training opportunities available! Engaging with someone with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be difficult for people unless they have at least a baseline knowledge of the disorder. Everyday Interactions with the Autism Spectrum Population is a comprehensive course for anyone and everyone who is working, volunteering, attending school, shopping or just out and about in the community and need to help recognize behaviors associated with ASD and safely engage for the good of all involved. Autism FYI’s workshops provide professionals, parents and community members the information needed to significantly support people on the autism spectrum in school, at work and in the community. They created this training course, which is available in person or online to anyone. In this course, you will learn:

ASD • Major developmental differences of ASD vs. neurotypical persons • To identify e s c a l a t i n g behavior and how to best respond • Communication difﬁculties and how to overcome them • How does Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD effect the behavior of a person with ASD) • How to engage a person effectively and appropriately you suspect has ASD • How to help coach/mentor a person with ASD on your team and engage them more effectively • How to engage a person with ASD who comes into your store, bank, daycare, community program etc. • How people with ASD make wonderful employees and how to hire and integrate them as part of your team • De-escalation techniques and behaviors to avoid • Effective communication techniques to help keep their anxiety level down • Strategies to help them cope with any situation Their trainings also have someone with ASD attending for role playing scenarios and interaction. Upon completion of the course, you will be more conﬁdent in identifying ASD behaviors, understanding effective engagement and communication techniques, and successfully interacting with someone with ASD. at Ithaca College. Kreuscher placed 19th, and her two Connetquot teammates, sophomore Lara Booth Alam and senior Morgan Cassidy, placed 14th and 16th, respectively, earning all three All-State honors for

finishing in the top 20 in New York State. “This was an incredible accomplishment and a great finish to an awesome season for all of these girls,” said their coach, Jeff Shiebler.

Collected Giving For The Holidays

In the spirit of the holidays, Islip High School students, faculty and staff came together to support families in the community who are in need. The National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, Athletes Helping Athletes and Interact Club held a holiday drive and assembled baskets that will help families through the extended holiday season. In addition to filling

the festively-decorated baskets with nonperishable items and items for a complete Thanksgiving meal, staff and faculty also donated gift cards to local supermarkets, department stores, gas stations and pharmacies. This way, families receiving the baskets will be able to purchase a turkey and supplement additional holiday purchases during the entire holiday season.

Social worker Shari Pennington said, “It is important to let the community know that the entire school community came together to help Islip families. Everyone stepped up to help make the holidays special for those who found holiday challenges this year.” Ms. Pennington said that nine Islip families received baskets this Thanksgiving.

United Way Of Long Island Awarded $1M Hud Grant To Help Low-Income Elderly Homeowners Age In Place United Way of Long Island has been awarded a $1 million Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Older Adults Home Modification Grant Program (OAHMP). Funds will be applied to make safety and functional home modifications and limited repairs to meet the needs of low-income elderly homeowners that allow them to age in place. Long Island’s population is continuing to age; according to 2019 U.S. Census population estimates, there are more than 300,000 Long Islanders 65 years of age or older. The number of residents age 70 and older in Nassau and Suffolk counties is expected to increase by more than 220,000 over 25 years, according to Northwell Health. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates falls are the leading cause of injury and death in older Americans, making the program even more essential. Stay at home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic shed light on housing conditions that put health and safety at risk. This program is designed to help prevent Long Island seniors unnecessary hospitalizations and/or skilled nursing facility admissions. “Seniors across Long Island have made their desire to live in their own homes resoundingly clear, which is why the work that United Way of Long Island does is so vital,” said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer. “I was proud to support United Way’s federal funding application for their Safe At Home For Seniors program. $1 million is now on its way to help hundreds of seniors across Long Island with repairs and modifications to their homes so they can age in place and in dignity, and I will continue to advocate for a federal investment in home and community-based services.” The delivery of the HUD OAHMP grant requires a home assessment by a licensed occupational therapist (OT). United Way’s community partners, along with the OT’s will help identify the repairs most critically needed for seniors to facilitate aging in place. The types of repairs to these homes will include bathroom renovations (i.e. installing no-slip strips, grab bars, transfer benches) and accessibility features (i.e. lever handles on all doors and faucets, handheld shower heads, wheelchair ramps). “There has never been a more important time than now to ensure the safety of our senior citizens when living independently at home,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “Small changes in seniors’ homes can make a huge difference in their lives. This

HUD modification program will enhance United Way’s already existing Safe at Home for Seniors program allowing our elderly neighbors to safely age in place.” Since 1995, United Way’s Housing Division has provided healthy home and accessibility modifications to older adults, veterans, and people with disabilities to help them remain safe, healthy and independent in their homes and communities for as long as possible. “Our goal is to enable older adults to remain in their homes through low-cost, high impact modifications,” said Rick Wertheim, Senior Vice President of Housing and Green Initiatives Department and project director for the new initiative. “This will help seniors stay safe in the comfort of their own home and age in place with dignity.” United Way is replicating the design of the CAPABLE (Community Aging in Place: Advancing Better Living for Elders) program developed by the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. Evidence shows that every $3,000 spent in home accessibility modifications can yield more than $20,000 in healthcare savings. The home modification program will launch in January of 2022 and expects to serve 150 clients over three years. To qualify, residents must live in and own private residences and be at least 62 years old and reside in Brentwood, Central Islip, City of Glen Cove, City of Long Beach, Huntington Station, North Bellport, Riverhead, Village of Hempstead or Wyandanch. United Way of Long Island also seeks to provide health and social services to older residents, helping them age in their homes. All participants in this program are connected to assistance for which they may qualify, such as veterans assistance, 2-1-1 information and referral, Project Warmth, social work, financial and legal help and health and prevention services. To qualify or to learn more about United Way’s home modification program visit www. unitedwayli.org

their final work,” Toomey said. “They had a lot of fun viewing it on the wall when it was installed, and their hard work is now a beautiful collaborative display.”

East Islip Girls Soccer Team Claims County Title

East Islip High School’s varsity girls soccer team won the county championship in splendid fashion. After a terrific 12-12 regular season, the second-seeded East Islip team began the Suffolk Class A playoffs with a 2-1 quarterfinals victory over Sayville. In the semifinals game against third seed Hauppauge, East Islip advanced on penalty kicks, 4-3, following two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods and two five-minute sudden victory periods. In the Nov. 2 championship game against top seed Rocky Point, East Islip claimed

the title with a 4-0 shutout featuring two goals from Jenna Borelli and one each from Kate Alexander and Dylann Trahey. “I am extremely proud of the effort the girls displayed in the finals game,” coach Ben Diallo said. “They executed the game plan from start to finish. The goal was to deprive Rocky Point’s forwards quality balls from their back line and midfield. We put them under constant pressure. Scoring first and adding a mental pressure to the physical one was another element of our game plan that worked perfectly. After the first goal, we kept the intensity up and scored the

second one. From there, we knew we had them because they had to chase the game for the first time this season and we wouldn’t let them. The third element of the game plan was to remain ourselves and play our brand of soccer. The team was brilliant and disciplined the whole way. I am elated for the girls, the school and the beautiful East Islip community.” East Islip went on to face Rockville Centre’s South Side High School, losing a close 2-1 contest in the Long Island Class A championship/Southeast Regional Final, held at Shoreham-Wading River High School.

Islip Athletes Sign On The Dotted Line The Islip School District is pleased to announce that six student-athletes signed national letters of intent on Nov. 10 to continue playing their sport at Division I and II colleges or universities next fall. Signing a national letter of intent is one of the most important highlights of a studentathlete’s career. Islip High School Principal Jon LaRochester said the students should be proud and spoke about being an athlete. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for my athletic experiences,”

he said. “Through athletics you make bonds only an athlete understands. Be proud and be prepared to work.” In addition to saying that the district provided excellent experiences for the athletes to rely on, Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics John Sparacio also noted the role parents played in the success of their son or daughter. “This is a very exciting time in your lives, but the sacrifices your parents made also needs to be recognized,” he said.
