January 7th, 2018 marks opening day for the NYS Department of Environmental Conservations (DEC) special January shotgun season for deer hunting in Suffolk County. Over the past several years changes have been made to existing laws and regulations expanding opportunity for hunters. These changes have been implemented to help increase recreational deer harvest to better manage increasing deer populations in Suffolk County. Overpopulations of deer have the ability to negatively impact natural habitats along with agricultural, public and private properties, and public health in the forms of automobile/ deer collisions and tickborne diseases. Hunting is DEC’s most effective and efficient known tool to maintain wildlife populations at levels that are compatible with communities and natural resources. The regular (bowhunting) season for deer in Suffolk County now runs through January 31st. The 2018 firearms deer season in Suffolk County will begin Sunday, January 7th and continue until January 31st, including weekends. Town permits are now only required in the Towns of Southampton, Islip and Smithtown. DEC regulations require that lands eligible for firearms deer hunting must be at least 10 acres in size, and hunters must possess a valid big game hunting license, a signed landowners endorsement, and a town permit where required. Deer may be taken only by: · Shotgun, using a single ball or slug; · Muzzleloading rifle or pistol, shooting a single projectile having a minimum bore of 0.44 inches. Shotgun barrels may

be rifled, and telescopic sights may be used. Crossbows are not a legal hunting instrument in Suffolk County. Hunters should check with local towns and villages to determine any local restrictions or discharge ordinances. Hunters who wish to hunt on statemanaged lands in Suffolk County will be able to take advantage of the expanded special firearms deer season as well the extended archery season. The following state managed properties will be open for shotgun deer hunting from January 7th to 31st: Rocky Point Natural Resources Management Area; Westhampton Dwarf Pine Plains Preserve; Henrys Hollow Pine Barrens State Forest; Barcelona Neck Cooperative Hunting Area; David Sarnoff Cooperative Hunting Area; and Otis Pike Preserve. The East Hampton Cooperative Area and Noyac (part of the Southampton Cooperative Areas) will be open for firearms deer hunting from January 8th to 31st; weekdays only. To hunt for deer on DEC managed lands, during the firearms season, hunters must enter a drawing. Entries must be received at NYSDEC-Deer Drawing, PO Box 659, Ridge NY 11961-0659, by 4:45 p.m., Monday, December 4th, 2017. Entries can also be hand delivered to the Ridge Hunter Check Station by the above date. There are no applications for this drawing. To enter, hunters must send a No. 10 (4 1/8” x 9 ½”) envelope. This envelope must contain a self-addressed, stamped, No. 10 or No. 9 return envelope. The hunter

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Academic Center highlighted a new program called “Individual Acts of Caring.” When a staff member witnesses a student doing a random act of kindness, they present the student with a bracelet with the words “Individual Act of Caring.” The students in this

picture were seen being helpful, positive, kind, and compassionate to their classmates. Each wrote a testimonial that is displayed on a bulletin board in the hallway. The “Individual Acts of Caring” program was part of the building-wide Behavior Management System. The purpose is to

Spirit of the Season

Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog… so the slogan goes, stamped on every piece of Lindenhurst paraphernalia this side of Wellwood Avenue, and beyond. And it’s true. I have not been a student of the Lindenhurst school district since 2000; but, come every Homecoming, I am there - along the parade route, in the stands, on the sidelines - snapping pictures for this very paper and cheering on the home team with the rest of the crowd, many of them fellow alumni. And last weekend, I was among the thousands who tuned in to watch the Lindy Bulldogs defeat the Oceanside Sailors in the Long Island Tournament - Division I Final, following their perfect 12-0 season. What a proud moment it was, to see this team go all the way for the very first time in their storied history, supported by their throng of loyal fans.

And later that night, as the team buses returned to the streets of Lindy, they were met by hundreds of proud community members lining the route, stretching from town hall all the way to the high school. What a wonderful sight to behold, to witness an entire town rally behind a team, an organization, a common cause. I imagine many towns across Long Island have experienced this at one time or another; it is this type of camaraderie which forges a connection that cannot be broken. Years later, residents will remember moments like these, and pass them along to their children and grandchildren. Perhaps this particular occasion was made all the more special coming as it did at the start of the holiday season, providing an added element to an already-festive atmosphere. What began

as a mere dream back in September turned into victory parades through town and more recognition than any individual could have ever hoped to receive. Even still, it remains a team victory; no man above the rest, all united in their Lindy Pride. Browsing through some of the many videos shared on social media following the victory, I came across one that appeared to be posted immediately following, taken during the post-game meeting of coaches and players. As the head coach praised the outstanding accomplishments of the season, he made sure to mention the town, the people, the community they all called home - without them, he said, none of this would have been possible. And that, in the end, is the most humbling achievement of all. Seventeen years later, I remain a proud Bulldog. Always.

Harmony Café is one of more than 60 community cafés in America and abroad with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, affordable and delicious meals to all who walk through their door. They are a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. Their philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. When one enters the Harmony Café, there is a suggested donation of $10 to dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. Guests can pay the suggested donation, pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a fresh meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. I recently met with Rosemarie McCarthy, Director and Founder of Long Island’s first community café, Harmony Café. She stressed the importance of not only feeding one’s stomach, but feeding their soul as well. At Harmony Café, each meal is offered over 2 ½ hours and is always accompanied with live music. Rosemarie mentioned that, “There is a great need to have social connections; it is essential to one’s overall health and well-being.” Therefore, she spotlights the importance of engaging in conversation with one another at her events. The business model for these types of cafés isn’t one that is easy to get off the ground; therefore, as of now, Harmony

Café only offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. Harmony Café currently operates out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, Rosemarie has a goal for Harmony Café to have a storefront in the Patchogue area that will be open five days a week for lunch and dinner. The following volunteer positions are needed: event planning committee volunteers; a volunteer coordinator assistant; servers and kitchen help volunteers; community advocate/ outreach volunteers; and, most importantly, she needs volunteers to help fundraise, and volunteer board members (passionate people who can give a minimum of 10 hours a month to help plan ahead and discuss the organization’s needs and wants). Rosemarie mentioned that she values passion over experience in these areas because experience can always be gained! Bringing Forth the Best

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has received a grant from the Plastic Surgery Foundation to enable the program to provide information about breast reconstruction. The funds will be used to create bilingual educational materials in print and online. Two bilingual social workers regularly meet with breast cancer patients at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) Breast and/or Oncology Clinic and address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients. Says Reyna Machado, assistant director of the Adelphi Program, “This additional funding from the Plastic Surgery Foundation will allow us to enhance the dialogue between the social workers and patients about breast reconstruction, as this is an option and right that many women are not aware of, specifically underserved populations.” Federal law signed in 1998 requires health group insurance plans to cover breast reconstruction and New York State requires healthcare professionals to discuss reconstruction with patients prior to cancer removing surgery. Bilingual social workers address barriers that interfere with the continuity of treatment including transportation, food, legal services and financial needs. Efforts are made to connect patients to community agencies and coalitions and help facilitate applications. In addition, patients are offered the opportunity to address issues related to reconstruction. Each patient is encouraged to explore her unique feelings and needs surrounding her breast cancer diagnosis and upcoming surgery. By providing a safe place to discuss body image, intimacy and fears, each patient is enabled to make an informed decision reflecting her unique needs. Social Workers are also available to support each patient throughout the process and help to facilitate ongoing communication with her plastic surgeon and treatment team. Dozens of Suffolk schools converged on Islip High School on November 16th as it hosted the ninth annual Compassion Without Borders Student Leadership Conference, a visionary event that works to eliminate barriers, promote unity and cultivate generosity of the heart. More than 370 student leaders and 280 teachers and administrators from 35 different Suffolk schools visited Islip to participate in discussing compassion in their schools and communities, making this the largest Compassion Without Borders to date. The remarkable event was sponsored by the Suffolk County Principal’s Association, whose president, Ed Casswell, helped create the program. “During the past nine years, more than 3,000 students from Suffolk County have been presented with the opportunity to hone their leadership skills and return to their home schools ready to enact meaningful change in their respective school communities,” said Caswell. “Kudos to the Islip School District for hosting this year’s event and showcasing their wonderful students and staff. Regardless of school district borderlines and rivalries, Compassion without Borders brings all Suffolk high schools together under the banner of leadership and unity. The many students in attendance reinforced the singular mantra of this leadership initiative – when you bring great students together, great things happen.” Other schools in attendance included Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center, Babylon, Bay Shore, BayportBlue Point, Bellport, Brentwood, Center Moriches, Centereach, Central Islip, Comsewogue, Connetquot,

East Hampton, Eastport-South Manor, Elwood-John H. Glenn, Half Hollow Hills, Hampton Bays, Hauppauge, Kings Park, Mount Sinai, Newfield, North Babylon, Patchogue-Medford, Rocky Point, Sachem North, Sayville, Shoreham-Wading River, Smithtown East, Smithtown West, Southampton, Walt Whitman, Ward Melville, West Babylon, Westhampton Beach and Wilson Tech. Following an opening ceremony, JC Pohl of “Teen Truth” served as the guest speaker, kicking off the

conference on an inspiring note. The students then broke into groups for a wide variety of enriching activities including in-depth discussions as well as quilting, yoga and vocal music; the latter culminated in a moving and unifying closing performance. “Students from across Suffolk County worked together to focus on compassionate leadership and vehicles for impacting change in their own schools,” said Hampton Bays High School Principal Christopher Richardt. “The energy and enthusiasm for this work was present in

every corner of Islip High School through a series of thoughtfully planned activities. It was an incredible day that will hopefully have a lasting impact on all of our schools.” Displaying intense altruism, Islip students and their guests collected enough can tops to fill an entire 50-gallon garbage pail, which will be sent to Islip Town Hall to support the Autism Speaks Foundation. They also wrote more than 200 personalized cards to Jacob Thompson, a terminally ill 9- year-old Maine boy whose Christmas wish was to receive homemade cards. Moved by Jacob’s story, the students decided to also donate a diversity-themed quilt to him that had been created during one of the conference’s workshops. “Compassion Without Borders was a huge success and really empowering,” said Islip senior Julia Hormann. “My favorite part was getting to see students from different schools collaborate together.” “This was a really big commitment, and we put a lot of hard work and effort into it,” said Islip senior John DelGenio, who guided the vocal music participants. “A special moment was getting a chance to perform with all these people I just met for the first time and create a bond with them.” “It was truly an amazing day, and I have never been more proud of my colleagues and students,” said Islip Principal Michael Mosca. “I hope we will all continue to spread the message of compassion in every facet of what we do.” Photo courtesy of: Islip School District

Islip Academic Center, an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school for students with special education needs, was visited recently by the LI Science Center. A representative from the center gave a hands-on workshop about forensic archeology, which is the study of remains. A small crime scene was

constructed and students examined bones to identify clues and information about the “victims.” This exercise tied in with the school’s science curriculum and enhanced the other aspects of forensics that students had already studied, such as crime scene investigation and fingerprints.

Community Cleanups With the goal of showing pride in the community and bolstering good citizenship, East Islip Superintendent John Dolan recently started a Superintendent’s Community Service Club for students this fall, working in conjunction with other community cleanup programs such as the Town of Islip’s Keep Islip Clean and the district’s

“If You See Something, Say Something” initiative. These ongoing efforts also served to provide community service hours for East Islip’s students. High schoolers Antonio Ditta and Enzo Ditta were the first students to be honored by Dolan and the East Islip Board of Education for their cleanup contributions. Recently, the county, town

and school district were at odds over responsibility to clear overgrowth from a sidewalk, an issue that was impeding students walking to school. Antonio took it upon himself to knock on the door of the elderly woman who lived there, and offer to clear the overgrowth with his brother Enzo, beautifying the woman’s yard in the process.

Michael Orgera, a sixthgrader at East Islip Middle School, represented the district in Albany last month as part of a special New York State PTA Reflections Art Roadshow. A total of 60 works of art were chosen for this

Orgera, a highly awarded participant in PTA Reflections, is a two-time Suffolk Region Award of Excellence winner as well as a New York State Winner of Excellence, New York State Winner of Merit and 2016 National Reflections Winner. His artwork was on display in the rotunda of the New York State Department of Education Building until Nov. 2, when it traveled to Niagara Falls for display at the 2017 New York State PTA Convention. The sun was shining on October 13th as AnnMarie Mills’ and Sue Lange’s life science students from Islip Middle School put on their waders to participate in the annual “A Day in the Life of a River” field trip. With the help of natural resource experts and several other middle school teachers, the eighth-graders engaged in hands-on citizen science exploration at the Carlls River in Babylon. “A Day in the Life” features students exploring and collecting firsthand information to learn how their river fits into the larger ecosystem. Students examine the physical and chemical aspects of each aquatic ecosystem, such as salinity, the amount of sediments, nitrates, phosphates and oxygen

levels in the water, as well as conduct biodiversity inventories of the flora and fauna in and around the rivers and estuary from the headwaters to the mouth of the river. Their work helps to determine the health of the aquatic ecosystem and biodiversity of the Carlls River. “This year, our students really enjoyed using a variety of nets – including a seining net, dip nets and a cast net – to capture fresh water critters such as crayfish, bluegills, pumpkinseed fish and a largemouth bass,” said Mills. “The students were thrilled to put the equipment to good use.” The event is coordinated jointly by Brookhaven National Laboratory; Central Pine Barrens

Commission; New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation; Seatuck Environmental Association; and Suffolk County Water Authority. “’‘A Day in the Life’ helps students develop an appreciation for and knowledge of Long Island’s river and estuary ecosystems and collect useful scientific data,” said program coordinator Melissa Griffiths Parrott. “It teaches students to become stewards of water quality and connected to Suffolk County’s spectacular natural resources.” “This program is a perfect vehicle for teachers to integrate various disciplines including math, media, social studies and science into their curriculum,” said cocoordinator Mel Morris, special projects manager at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s office of educational programs. “These activities are examples of authentic science research and mirror the way scientist collect and analyze.” Photo courtesy of: Islip School District

Young Leaders Five Islip High School students were chosen by the Islip American Legion Rusy-Bohm Post 411 to attend the Legion’s Boys State and Auxiliary Girls State leadership programs this past summer. They participated in a video conference on what it was like for the Pilgrims to sail to America on the Mayflower.
