Conversations with Masters For The Holidays The Holidays are a time of hope, love, joy and reflection. It’s a time to slow down, put our routines on hold and spend time with family. For those of us who are fortunate enough to have some time off, we are granted the best gift of all... the ability to be present with the people we love. For me, the days that fall between December 24th and January 2nd create a sacred pocket of space between me and the rest of the world. I can simply Be. Much of the time we forget that we are human beings, and not human doings. While some celebrate the season with raucous affairs and big crowds, I prefer getting cozy close to home, and I bake a ton! Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living.

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options case managers marvel at the hurdles overcome by each program participant and celebrate every accomplishment and achievement. Here is the story of one brave and amazing individual currently receiving Home and Community Based Services (HCBS). Leslie was referred by her Care Coordinator to receive Options Home and Community Based Services, HCBS. Her history included abuse by people in authority and makes her shy when meeting new people and unsure about anything new or unfamiliar. Leslie and her husband have been married for several years and as they’ve aged, they have developed some health issues. With minimal cooking skills, Leslie wanted to be able to prepare healthy meals for herself and
her husband. Thanks to one-on-one assistance through Options HCB services, Leslie improved her cooking skills and is now filling up her recipe book with tasty, diabetes-friendly meals she can prepare on her own. Leslie’s symptoms caused her such distress that she rarely left her apartment unless accompanied by her husband or mother. Even though her mother lives only a half a mile from her home, she has not walked there independently in 3-years. Leslie was determined to overcome her fear so that she could live a more fulfilled life…..go to stores, visit family and take an art class. For months, Leslie worked to become more familiar with the walking route to her mom’s. She gradually grew more comfortable and walked with an Options employee until she was ready to take the walk on her own. Leslie completed her first solo trip to her mother’s home and her family celebrated her accomplishment! They were so impressed by her courage that they became more involved in helping her achieve other goals. Now, with the support of her family, Leslie is applying for a gym membership and plans to work with her Options HCBS provider on becoming more fit and healthy. Leslie is less fearful of her community. She has learned that each small step brings her closer to the life she wants for herself and her family. Avoid Surprise, Winterize (NAPSI)—As the weather gets colder, winterizing your vehicle should be a top priority. The nonprofit Car Care Council recommends that motorists perform a sixpoint winter maintenance check of areas that are particularly affected by driving in rough weather. “Harsh weather can stress out a vehicle, as well as its driver,” explained Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “A vehicle that’s properly prepared for the elements can help you avoid an unplanned road emergency when the weather takes a sudden turn for the worse.” Six-Point Vehicle Check 1. Battery—Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for optimum performance. Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it’s advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old.
2. Antifreeze— Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however. Surprisingly, full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze point than when mixed with water. 3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important on icy or snow-covered roads. 4. Tires—Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure, including the spare. If you’ll be driving where snow and ice are a problem, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop. 5. Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will

flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30 as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car. 6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir and replace wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly clean your windshield. In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. Drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and

When Patricia and her two siblings were growing up, her late mom, Ethel Henry, began whipping up this delectable confection during World War II. When the war ended and the whole family was reunited, their Red Devil Cake tradition continued. Patricia’s mom, Ethel, baked this cake for the entire family as her three children were growing up. As Patricia recalls, “My father loved my mom’s famous Red Devil Cake, and so did all three of us kids. You’re going to love it!”

Sound Futures Fund (LISFF) show how projects led by local groups and communities make a big difference in improving water quality and restoring habitat around the Long Island Sound watershed. This grant program combines funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation

(NFWF). The LISFF 2018 grants will reach more than 1.7 million residents through environmental education programs and conservation projects. Water quality improvement projects will treat 1.9 million gallons of water and collect 37,000 pounds of floating trash. The projects will open up six miles of river and restore 18 acres of coastal
habitat for fish and wildlife. The grants will be matched by $3.09 million from the grantees resulting in $5.67 million in funding for on-the-ground conservation projects in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont. The Long Island Sound Study initiated the LISFF in 2005 through EPA’s Long Island Sound Office and NFWF. To date, the LISFF has invested $19.6 million in 416 projects. The program has generated an additional $36 million in grantee match, for a total conservation impact of $55.6 million for locally based projects. This project will positively impact Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary, Oyster Bay, New York, Crab Meadow, Nissequogue River, Stony Brook Harbor, Hallock PROTECTING LONG ISLAND SOUND - Rep. Zeldin Joins EPA, National Fish State Park/Mattituck State and Wildlife Foundation and Local Officials to Announce $2.57 Million in Grants Tidal Wetlands, and Plum Awarded to Improve Health of Long Island Sound. and Gull Islands.

Mel B: From Spice Girl to Survivor By Allison Kugel
Melanie Brown aka Mel B has reigned supreme as the spiciest of her band mates since bursting onto the entertainment scene as Scary Spice in 1996, with the group’s #1 hit Wannabe. She instantly began making headlines, and she never stopped. Her tempestuous marriages and some romantic near misses, including her split from Eddie Murphy heard ‘round the world, have at times overshadowed her on-camera talent on recent hit shows like UK’s X Factor and America’s Got Talent. In her recently released memoir, Brutally Honest, Mel opens up about her ten year marriage to exhusband, Stephen Belafonte, whom she claims kept her captive with multiple forms of abuse. She is finally speaking out and advocating for victims of domestic partner abuse, and she is excited about 2019’s Spice Girls reunion tour. Allison Kugel: After all you have been through, how are your spirits? Mel B: Obviously, I’m still on my healing path and it’s going to be an ongoing thing. I’m taking care of myself, meditating, doing my Reiki and eating well. I actually couldn’t be happier right now. I know there
are more happier times to come, but right now I’m in a really good place and it’s taken me a long time to even get to this place, so I’m thankful. Allison Kugel: Let’s go back a bit. What did the Spice Girls fame of the 1990s feel like for you? Mel B: It was tiring, but we really didn’t care because it was five girls together who had each other, living our dream life. We were living in England, struggling financially, not having much to eat, convincing people to let us borrow their recording studios so that we could sit down, and write and [record] our music. There was a phase of a couple of years where it was really tough. When we got to release our first single, Wannabe, and we signed with a record company and got Simon Fuller involved to manage us, it was really good, happy times that all five of us had dreamed of. We were traveling the world, singing, performing, dancing, writing music and making a movie. It was a really beautiful few years. Of course, we were tired, because we didn’t allow ourselves any time off. We knew that we had to soar through life like a big tornado and strike while the iron was hot.
Allison Kugel: What do you feel you came into this life as Melanie Brown to learn? Mel B: The number one thing is that I come from a white mother and a black father. Back in the 1970s when they got together and had me, that was seen as something that wasn’t really done. They had a lot of things that they had to overcome in bringing me into the world and raising me. I had to find my own identity. Apart from the likes of Neneh Cherry and maybe Tracy Chapman, there really wasn’t anybody that I could look up to where I felt like I belonged, or anyone who I felt like I even looked like. For me, it was all about creating a path where hopefully other mixedrace girls, and other mixed-race kids could actually follow. I do believe I am here, somewhat, to make it okay to be in the skin that you’re in. Allison Kugel: Obviously, the situation with your most recent ex, Stephen Belafonte, is extremely contentious. In general, how are you navigating co-parenting your three daughters with three different fathers in the picture?
Allison Kugel: After the abuse you experienced, are you frightened for your daughter, Madison, when you send her off to see your exhusband, Stephen? Mel B: All I can say is that I fought through the courts for her to have mandatory therapy every Saturday with a specialized therapist who is very aware of the situation. If there was anything for the therapist to be concerned about she would be able to flag it, based on the kind of intense therapy that she is doing with Madison. I have to trust and believe that if there was anything that I should be majorly concerned about,
Allison Kugel: I would imagine it took courage to keep a lot of the more explicit passages in your book. What was the hardest part, not just to write, but to keep in the final draft? Mel B: Everything that is out there now is pretty salacious, and I know it seems so random about the sex and the drugs I wrote about. The physical and emotional abuse had already kind of been out there [in the media]. I just wanted to make sure that I clarified and made my puzzle understandable. When you read my book, you do understand that certain things were due to coping mechanisms, which are very common with somebody that’s in an abusive relationship. The book addresses things like why it took me so long to leave. It’s because you’re trapped, and you don’t have friends and family because you’ve been isolated due to how your abuser does things. That’s why in the back of my book, I put the 15 warning signs of what an abusive relationship looks like. Sometimes we don’t know until it is too late, and you’re heavily in it. I want my book to be an education and insight into what it looks like to be in an abusive relationship. Allison Kugel: Why make the recent public declaration that your middle daughter Angel’s father, Eddie Murphy, is the love of your life? Mel B: One of the parts of the book that my friend couldn’t quite piece together was… why was I at my most vulnerable when my abuser came into my life. I’d just had Angel. She was two months old and then the monster came into my life. My friend and co-writer, Louise [Gannon], was trying to figure out why I was feeling so vulnerable. Then it became, “Oh, you felt vulnerable because of the Eddie situation, so let’s talk about that.” I wanted to be able to talk about it and express it. I didn’t even fully understand it when we started talking about it; what went wrong and how it all kind of fell apart. It was important for me to put it all down on paper and do it from my recollection. I needed to remind myself that I do know what a loving, respectful relationship is, because I had that and much more with Eddie. It was so important for me to put pen to paper with that, because I also had never spoken about it. I wanted people to know, and I wanted my daughter to know that it was a very loving courtship. It didn’t end well, but it was one of the biggest love stories of my life. Allison Kugel: You’re about to run off to a Spice Girls meeting later. Can you share?
Mel B: It’s about our 2019 tour. We put six shows up for grabs and we ended up doing thirteen because they sold out. We’re going to be talking about staging, choreography and our dancers. It will be all of us on tour, but without Victoria. She sends all of us her blessing, but she has always been adamant that performing is not really her thing. She’s busy with her family and her fashion empire. I still have hope that at some point she joins us, but as of right now she’s not. Allison Kugel: The Scary Spice of twenty years ago was brash and bold, and very tell it like it is. You were the tough girl. After everything you’ve been through publicly, with heartbreak and abuse and people seeing that you are quite vulnerable, who will Scary Spice be as you head out on the 2019 Spice Girls tour? Mel B: I’m still the same. A little more educated and more aware, and I would say more honest which could be misinterpreted as being even more brash and even more loud (laughs).

Mel B: My oldest is nineteen, so I had to do the every other weekend and certain weekdays for eighteen years. I’ve never said a bad word about any of their fathers to my daughters. Angel’s eleven years old and she sees her dad (Eddie Murphy) on a regular basis. She’s actually going to his house [this] week to do the family Christmas card, which is really lovely. My seven-year-old, Madison, that’s all happening through the courts, so that is kind of out of my hands. One thing I do with all my three girls, is I make sure they know that they’re loved, and that they came from a place of a loving relationship. Even though they didn’t quite work out, and me and their dads didn’t stay together, they all know that they came from a lot of love. One thing that is mandatory is that I always make it a very exciting thing when I send them off to their fathers.

The holidays are a time for celebrating with family and friends, but often stress inhibits our abilities to enjoy the holiday season. From shopping to cooking to events, we are often packing our schedules while forgetting about our health. A report in the Journal of the American Heart Association notes that heart-related deaths spike during Christmas. While more research is needed to pinpoint the exact reason, researchers suggest that emotional stress, changes in diet and alcohol consumption, less staff at medical facilities and changes in physical environment (i.e. visiting relatives), could play a role
in this spike. In order to protect your heart and enjoy more holidays with your loved ones, follow these tips to stay healthy and happy this season: Maintain healthy habits. Even though our schedules change during the holidays because of travel and events, it’s important to maintain regular healthy habits. For instance, eating healthy balanced meals, moving more every day, and getting at least seven hours of sleep each night. Beware of party perils. Holiday events could mean extra helpings of not-sohealthy meals. Try eating a healthy snack, such as a big salad or vegetable soup, before a party to avoid
overindulging later. If you’re hosting or bringing a dish, offer healthier options using American Heart Association recipes and cooking tips found at recipes.heart.org. Give yourself the gift of peace. It’s okay to say no to invitations when you have too much going on. If you start to feel overwhelmed, recharge by doing something that relaxes you, such as yoga, meditation or going for a brisk walk. Make a plan for the New Year. When the parties are over, the winter blues set in. Instead of feeling down, challenge yourself with realistic, sustainable goals for a healthy, happy New Year! Feeding Forty Families in Need Coach Henry Nunez’s East Islip Redmen football team, all 10-year-old students at the district’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools, recently took up a food collection for the Adopt-A-Family Program through Long Island Cares food pantry to help those in need during the
holiday season. The team collected enough food to feed 40 families this year, packing it and delivering it personally to Long Island Cares. “The boys learned that there is no one factor that determines one’s struggles, and that any face can be the face of hunger,” said team mom Kerri
Ierardi. “This selfless task has given these players a greater understanding and appreciation for the blessings in their own lives, as well as the feeling of great pride in the power of giving back to and representing their community.”

Migraine Facts And Treatment Tips (NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. There is, however, another option and it doesn’t involve taking medication. The Problem Almost 5 million people in the U.S. experience at least one migraine attack a month. More than 11 million people blame migraines for causing moderate to severe
disability and 91 percent of them can’t function normally during migraine attack, according to the American Migraine Study, which also reveals that the average migraine sufferer misses two days of work per year. It’s an expense both in terms of career—lost work—and medical costs. Migraine sufferers use 2.5 times the amount of prescription drugs and have six times as many diagnostic tests and services as nonsufferers. The average monthly health cost of
a migraine sufferer is 60 percent higher than that of people who don’t suffer from migraines, according to the National Institutes of Health. According to The Migraine Trust, migraine often occurs for the first time in teens and young adults but is most common in the 30-something age group. Spread Cheer, Not Germs ARA - Stopping by the nursing home or hospital to spend time with loved ones is a ritual for thousands of Americans -but are you sharing more than smiles and hugs when you visit? “Your hands are the main transmitters of health care-acquired infections,” says Alecia Cooper, a registered nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a
surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.” Two simple things can go a long way toward ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly. Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to
have the greatest density of germs. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers. “Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips of the opposite hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other

Students in Lauren Ferlin’s and Lisa Carpenito’s Honors Research classes at East Islip High School recently participated in the “A Day in the Life of a River” program, traveling to Bayard Cutting Arboretum to study the health of the Connetquot River ecosystem. During the program,
which is coordinated by Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Central Pine Barrens Commission, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Suffolk County Water Authority, students gathered data by collecting and identifying biological samples, performing
