The Harry Report By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked by a longtime friend and reader of this column for an update on “Harry.” For those who may have missed Chapters I & II, Harry is my slightly psychotic goldfish, purchased for all of 17¢ to serve as a “friend” to another fish I had won at a local carnival. Well, one week later, “Harvey” the carnie fish was floating upside down and Harry was riding solo. Now, nearly two months later, he is still enjoying his reign of the fishbowl,

alternately cowering behind (or amongst the branches) of his tree, and darting madly from one side (do round bowls have “sides”?) to the other, occasionally clunking into the glass as he zigs when he should have zagged. Hopefully, there hasn’t been any permanent brain damage. It’s difficult to tell for sure. One of his favorite pastimes seems to be watching me cook. As I prepare the food on the counter, he eagerly watches, as if hoping for a morsel to taste. I suppose it would be a nice change

from his dried flakes, although he does manage to suck those down with the ferocity of a small, finned Hoover®. So that’s the update on Harry, for all who care to know. Hopefully, he’ll survive the holiday season and ring in the New Year with us all. Who knows, maybe Santa will even bring him a new fishy friend if he’s good! Although, based on the last experiment in cohabitation, perhaps I should leave well enough alone. ‘Til then, Happy Holidays from Harry.

Over the years, the word Google has evolved from the name of a popular search engine to a verb meaning to search the Internet for information. Did you also know that Google allows its engineers to spend 20% of their work time on a project of their choosing? Since Google began allowing employees “tinker time,” productivity at their company has gone up. During Bay Shore Middle School’s 6th grade seminar sessions, students have been participating in G.E.N.I.U.S. hour (Generating in Education New Ideas and Understandings for Students) projects. Popular choices have been video game design, making Lego stop animation movies, computer programming and learning about electricity using Snap Circuits kits. Students have been working interdependently in small groups to collaborate with and learn from one another. Each student has access to the BSMS Library Genius Hour Edmodo group, where they can share information, links, pictures and videos with other students in the school participating in the program. Some materials for Genius Hour have been generously donated by the Buono and Champlin families, while Snap Circuits Rovers, Spheros and even a 3-D printer

Rain did not keep the poets away from Gardiner Manor School during the latest Parent University event. Students from Ms. D’Antoni’s class celebrated their own poetry and treated parents who attended the ELA version of Parent University to a poetry reading in the cafeteria. Gardiner Manor students Evan Martino, Nemesis Nina Ayala, Bobby Dixon, and Rosanna Khan also did a great job entertaining us with their

prose. Later, parents from both South Country and Gardiner Manor Schools had the opportunity to take a gallery walk through curriculum materials and student work samples, attend grade level workshops and access resources that can assist them in supporting their children’s English Language Arts work. Gardiner Manor teachers Ms. Olsen, Ms. Clifford, Ms. Beeker, Ms. Boyle, Miss Hunter, Ms.

Bergendorff and Ms. Rampersad facilitated engaging parent-centered workshops that were informative and gave parents time to explore and ask questions about ELA curriculum and teaching practices. Once again, Bay Shore High School students from the Interact Club were on site to assist in making the event such a success. Brookhaven Memorial Hospital held its 2014 Hospital Ball on November 15th. This year, guests donned Venetian Masks to add to the festivities. The event had over 460 attendees dining and dancing at East Wind Inn & Spa in Wading River. Some of them expressed their creative side with masks ranging from the court jester worn by attendees, Ralph Maust, and John Sullivan to the distinctive long nose Zanni mask sported by past Chairman of the Board, Robert Schwartz. Still others took the liberty of expanding the scope of the traditional Venetian masks and wore Batman and Phantom of the Opera, with one fellow deciding on the scream

mask, quite the unusual choice. Nevertheless, the evening was an elegant affair that raised over $640,000 dollars to help fund our Knapp Cardiac Care Center currently under construction on the north side of the Hospital campus. Brookhaven was proud to honor Nicholas H. Racanelli, of Racanelli Construction Co. Inc., as the recipient of the Community Service Award. Bellone. The Big Duck was constructed in 1931 by Riverhead duck farmer Martin Maurer and his wife Jeule to attract customers to buy their Peking ducks. It measures 30 feet from beak to tail, 15 feet from wing to wing, and 20 feet from its base to the top of its head. In 1987, the Big Duck was donated to the Suffolk County Parks Department and moved to its current location on Route 24 in Flanders. The Big Duck also serves as a tourist information center for the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Big Duck Store will be open for the evening, so you can pick-up some eggstra-special holiday
