Christmas Tree Project Faces Explosive Need In 10th Year

The Christmas Tree Project began eight years ago in Colorado Springs, and its initial success has attracted national interest from people in other cities wanting to donate, get trees as well as wishing to emulate its success. The project is a local grassroots effort to provide free, fullydecorated Christmas trees to families in need. Last year, requests for trees almost sextupled to 17,500 from 2,780 the previous year, arriving nationally from 47 U.S. states and as far away as from Karachi, Pakistan. “A beautiful, sparkling Christmas tree can make all the difference in the world to a family going through hard times right now,” according to Michelle and David Fein, who started the project in 2010. “This turned out to be such a happy accident

for us, that it’s a thrill to be doing it again.” “In this season of giving,” CBS news correspondent Alex Wagner explained last year, “One Colorado couple never expected that donating their old Christmas tree would lead to a heartwarming annual tradition.” Watch. The entire project sprang quite serendipitously from a simple one-line Craigslist ad the Feins posted to give away their artificial Christmas tree in 2010. They were contacted by 20 people in less than a few hours telling them their stories and vying for that one tree, that Michelle and David decided they had to try to meet the demand. They told their friends, and soon the word spread. The story touched a nerve in the Colorado

Springs community, and hundreds of people contacted The Christmas Tree Project to donate and request trees, as well as volunteer to help. By the time the first season it was all over, more than 300 trees had been given away. In a world troubled economically and divided politically, it may even seem a bit surprising. “It’s been overwhelming to see the vast reservoirs of energy and generosity that exist today when you simply offer people a chance to become involved and contribute, even in a small way,” added the Feins. “And it’s incredibly humbling to see the gratitude small acts of kindness produce.” The 2010 ad David and Michelle Fein placed on Craigslist for a single tree, brought responses including:

Joy Through the Brentwood Schools BUFSD to Host Drive-Thru Winter Wonderland and Tree Lighting Event to Celebrate Holiday Season Brentwood High School in the Brentwood Union Free School District will be hosting its 7th annual community wide holiday tree lighting ceremony as a drive-thru Winter Wonderland extravaganza. The event, which will take place on December 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., will feature the district’s annual Christmas tree lighting as well as a myriad of holiday theme light displays for

attendees to enjoy. In their cars, students, families, and friends of the Brentwood community will celebrate the joy of the holiday season as they enter from the district gate on 3rd Avenue, extending to 7th Avenue. Please note, to ensure the health and safety of all, pedestrians will not be permitted to participate. Local businesses and organizations have

collaborated with the district to generously provide assistance for the event, including the Brentwood Fire Department, Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC), and various district clubs and teams. The community wide event began six years ago as a way to increase family involvement in the district.

The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. East Islip students across the district celebrated Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 26 to 30, focusing on making healthy choices, spreading kindness and being good citizens. Special daily themes included wearing pajamas to show the importance of making good choices the second you wake up; showing off “crazy hair” to let everyone know to use your head to choose your words wisely, do the right thing and be kind; wearing “crazy socks” as a reminder that eating healthy foods is good for you from your head to your toes; wearing school colors to be proud members of a positive East Islip

community; and wearing favorite Halloween colors or outfits while pledging to make good choices. “It’s always great to join in on activities that promote the spirit of making good decisions and good citizenship,” said John F. Kennedy Elementary School Principal Deborah Smith. In prior years, representatives from East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club visited fifth grade classes at JFK and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School to present for Red Ribbon Week. The high schoolers were not permitted to visit

the elementary schools this year due to COVID-19, so the SADD Club shared a slide presentation with all the fifth grade teachers to show to their classes, which included a video on peer pressure, drug facts, a game and messages to remind students to stay away from drugs. “As we work through the pandemic, we know that we must be creative and still do the important programs that we have always done and send the message that we usually send to the fifth graders in our district,” said SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo.

Small Businesses Remain Resilient Amid Pandemic Amid the historic coronavirus pandemic, businesses are adapting by making major changes to their operations, including increased use of technology, according to the latest PNC semiannual survey of small and mid-size business owners and executives, which concluded Sept. 8. Eight in 10 business owners reported that they have made adaptations in

response to COVID-19, including safety changes in the form of new procedures or physical modifications, while others have adopted work-from-home policies. “Business owners have learned that the previous status quo won’t work now. The majority of businesses have reconfigured their operations and for many, these changes will be permanent,” says PNC chief economist, Gus

Faucher. “Their confidence may be shaken, but we know through the history of this survey that business owners are resilient and they know how to adapt to change.” According to the survey, half of businesses report increased use of technology since the outbreak began. Nearly three in 10 have added or increased the use of electronic or touchless payment systems,

electronic/website-enabled sales or electronic banking/ cash flow management services and 19 percent increased use of fraud/ identity protection tools. The pandemic has also forced many businesses to shake up their product lineups to better align with consumers’ new habits. A third of business owners report making changes either to the way they sell or deliver their products

and services or to the types of products and services they offer. Despite these positive signs of transformation and resilience, the drop in business activity over recent months forced many to take drastic measures through workforce reductions; nearly four in 10 businesses have cut workers since the start of the pandemic, although for 87 percent

of those, the decrease is considered temporary or a furlough. In fact, 58 percent of the businesses who had temporary layoffs or furloughs have already begun rehiring. Faucher said that while the worst may be over and economic activity is on the rebound, the “new normal” doesn’t mean a return to robust job and business growth that existed early in 2020. There are two ways that herd immunity can occur. The first is when resistance develops naturally when the body is exposed to the virus or bacteria. At this point, the immune system will produce antibodies to fight off the infection. What’s more, even those who are not vaccinated, such as newborn babies or those who may not be able to get vaccinated due to chronic illnesses, will get some level of protection because the disease will not be spreading as readily within their communities.

What Is Herd Immunity? Herd immunity is a term that often arises in relation to infectious diseases. Herd immunity has taken on renewed significance as the world has been battling COVID-19, the novel coronavirus introduced in late 2019. Herd immunity, which is sometimes called “community immunity,” “population immunity” or “social immunity,” refers to the indirect protection from infectious diseases that occurs when a large percentage of the population has become immune to that disease. This reinfection mystery is what makes herd immunity - both through a vaccine or through natural exposure - challenging for epidemiologists in relation to COVID-19. Herd immunity is an important factor in disease prevention. Getting the facts about this phenomenon is important.

Some of them cause relatively minor interruptions to daily life and often can resolve of their own accord when the body’s immune system mounts a successful defense. Other diseases can cause serious, even lifethreatening symptoms or spread rapidly, which makes it essential for medical professionals to help slow down or stop the transmission.
