Cross Country Championships
E
ast Islip High School senior William Reed competed in the 2015 NYSPHSAA cross-country championships, held at Woodbury High School in upstate Monroe. In the 5,000-meter race, Reed posted a time of 17:09, finishing 47 out of 106 athletes. In addition to being a state qualifier, Reed earned All-League, AllDivision and All-County recognition, and was honored with the Section XI Sportsmanship of the Year Award for cross-country.

Islip High School’s varsity girls soccer team won the school’s first-ever state Class A championship on November 15th, beating Jamesville-DeWitt at SUNY Cortland. The 1-0 game’s sole goal was scored by Lyndsey Sparks. Goalie Cassidy
Hock stopped all four Red Rams shots to preserve the shutout. The victory capped a remarkable 14-2-1 season for the Buccaneers. According to Islip coach Mike Reilly, his team saved its best performance of the season for when it mattered the most.
“At first, with the recent injuries to some impact players, I thought this would be a miracle on turf,” said Reilly. “After the way they played last Sunday, it was just a dominant performance by Islip soccer. This was no miracle.”
20 Years of Feasting East Islip High School students in Kelly Schwender’s food and nutrition class and the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Career Academy cooked up a full spread for the school’s 20th annual Thanksgiving feast. Schwender has long implemented the feast as part of her curriculum, providing students the chance to use their culinary abilities in all aspects of food preparation and meal planning. The high schoolers utilize menu planning and meal
management skills to create the menu, prepare the food and host this feast that has now become a two-decade tradition at East Islip. Feeding more than 200 guests that included the students, their families, teachers, faculty staff and district administrators, the luncheon featured eight 25-pound turkeys and 75 pounds of mashed potatoes, along with traditional sides such as stuffing, green bean casserole, candied sweet potatoes, and homemade cranberry and

apple sauce. An array of scrumptious desserts were also prepared, including miniature pumpkin pies, candied apple cheesecakes, carrot cake and chocolate chip pumpkin breads. “I am thankful to East Islip for having this feast, and for all the students’ hard work and enthusiasm in preparing, decorating and hosting such a wonderful event that has been a fabulous way to kick off the holidays and bring the school together,” said Superintendent John V. Dolan.

Grants Awarded The People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, honored its grant recipients during a recognition breakfast at the People’s United Bank Park Avenue branch, New York City, on Thursday, November 19th. Four nonprofits in Long Island received a total of $25,500. Long Island recipients included Debt Counseling Corp., Family Autism Center, Family Service League, and Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County. Reason for the Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tradition: the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. And so closes another Thanksgiving, filled with family, food and fond memories sure to be reflected upon in the coming years. By the time you read this, most of society will have already moved on to Christmas shopping and decorating and planning their next round of feasting and festivities. For me, as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the dawn of “Black Friday” and the close of autumnal activities, once and for all, I choose to savor this particular occasion just a bit longer. The essence of Thanksgiving is, after all, the true spirit of any holiday season
– or at least it should be. Too often, we become so caught up in the commercial clichés that we fail to truly appreciate these special moments. Just earlier today, as my own family reminisced upon occasions gone by, the recurring theme was family, friends and loved ones. The cast of characters may change from year to year, but the sentiment remains the same. While every holiday may not unfold perfectly from beginning to end – despite the “flawless” façade portrayed by most peoples’ Instagram and Facebook posts – they each hold their own place in the grand scheme of life. Time, and tradition, marches on, whether we like it or not. How we choose to spend that time will dictate the memories we make along the way and the fondness
with which we will recall them years – or perhaps mere months – from now. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season may be a hassle on the surface; but the joy it brings on a much deeper level is well worth the effort. Traditions surely vary from family to family, or even from year to year, as customs naturally evolve over time and take on varying forms. The specific nuances are not important. The togetherness, the process of coming together at this special time of year… that’s what traditions are made of. So before you head out into the fray in search of sale items over these next few weeks, stop to remember the reason we go to all this trouble. That notion should be enough to make the holidays truly happy.

Student Spotlight THE GOOD OLD DAYS SUBMITTED BY: ALEXIS PASIE, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
On Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, I was a witness to history. Fairfield School turned 90 and I was there! Our school was once called Massapequa Avenue School. Some of the things I learned about school in the early days was that if you looked outside, you would see the people playing polo. Polo is when you are on a horse and you have a certain type of stick and a wooden ball. Also, if you want to play baseball at recess, you have to be picked to play. Sometimes, you do not get picked or there is no room
for the kids to play. The invention that inspired me the most was the Band-Aid, which was made by Earle Dickson. He made the Band-Aid in the 1920’s in Highland Park, New Jersey. It is important because there would be a lot of people with cuts if not for him. It happened when Earle Dickson placed gauck on his wife’s cuts and they got better. I can relate to the Band-Aid because I always get hurt. The event the inspired me the most was 90’s Jazz. This took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is important
because, without 90’s Jazz, there would be no Jazz music today. It happened when the military people came back and they “wanted life to be light and happy.” I am connected to 90’s Jazz because I play the flute. I love Jazz, and my nana was born in the 1920’s and she loved Jazz. As you can see, the 1920’s was an inspiring time because they gave us a lot of new inventions, like eskimo pie, the traffic light, the jukebox and the bulldozer. We still use and eat these inventions today. So what inspires you about the 1920’s?

Supervisor Angie Carpenter and other Town of Islip officials attended the October 13th event, which recognizes students from across Islip who demonstrate environmental leadership. “I always get a
great group of junior commissioners from Wayne Mennecke, the KIC Club adviser at Islip High School,” said Keep Islip Clean Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “I can count on his students to get fully involved and make a positive contribution to the community and environment, and look forward to another rewarding year of working with them.” “We are very proud of our students who were
selected to serve as junior commissioners for the 2015-2016 school year,” said Principal Michael Mosca. “These students always go above and beyond for the betterment of their school and community. Bringing special awareness to breast cancer, East Islip Middle School’s student government sponsored a “Day of Pink” on October 30th, decorating the cafeteria and encouraging
classmates and teachers to wear pink clothing, jewelry or accessories. “The event was a huge success,” said teacher Dawn Ann Zeffiro. “Not only did the students learn educational facts about

In addition to a discussion about the hazards of drugs and alcohol, this year’s SADD Red Ribbon program included the traditional slogan contest and miniskit about peer pressure alongside a new letterwriting activity. In the latter, each fifth-grader wrote a letter to a current senior, wishing them luck and reminding them not to make destructive decisions as they approach prom and graduation season. “We are preparing
these fifth-graders to be equipped with good information that helps them not make destructive decisions,” said SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo. “Our Red Ribbon program is unique in that it brings the high school students into the actual elementary classroom, and they have engaging conversations about the issues that students face today. Who better to answer the questions that are on the minds of the fifthgraders, about middle and high school, than high schoolers who have been down the road already?”

Sharing Second In its inaugural year, Islip High School’s new gymnastics team, shared with Bay Shore High School, took second place in the Suffolk County team championships. The 10-member squad included seven Islip athletes: junior Leanne Robbins; freshman Madison Henke; eighthgraders Morgan Araujo, Courtney Autera, Antonia
Castranova and Morgan Milton; and seventh-grader Kerin Spadaro. The team was rounded out by three students from Bay Shore: juniors Hayden Davidson and Mattea Gravina, and eighth-grader Skye Harper. “It was my pleasure working with these girls,” said coach Robin Thomas. “They really were able to work together as one, as if they all represented
one school. I think it is something really special to be able to unite two communities.” Goal-setting was a watchword for the IslipBay Shore team. “We set small goals each week, and accomplished the ‘big goal,’” said Thomas. “Next year, we are looking to be even better, as none of our athletes are graduating.”

BASKET PREP - Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and Councilman John Cochrane, Jr. were joined by staff and volunteers from Islip Food for Hope at the final packing of Thanksgiving baskets. This year enough donations were collected to assemble 619 baskets, which will be donated to needy families in Islip Town.

Taste of the Town The Culinary Academy students, supervised by teacher Pat EmmonsFritz, were in charge of planning the entire event, including soliciting the participating businesses, setting up the tables and chairs, distributing posters and brochures throughout the community, preparing their own dishes, helping the sponsors bring in their supplies and helping them pack up at the end of the evening. Students from the other three East Islip Career Academies
also volunteered to help, setting up posters and making sure that the food was ready to serve. “The reason that this event was such a huge success is because of the support we got from the business owners, and the dedication of the Career Academy students and teachers, who are always ready to give 100 percent of their time and energy,” said Career Academy Director Israel Malinowitzer.

East Islip High School’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Career Academy hosted its second annual “Taste of the Town” event on October 29th, featuring 35 local food establishments, each bringing a minimum of two large trays of special dishes to sample. The event drew more than 500 community guests – twice as many as last year’s debut – for a night of tasting different foods as well as enjoying music, dancing and socializing.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports

( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million
free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free
credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
