More than 60 men and women who have served the nation participated in a parade throughout the JFK hallways to the sound of cheers from students and staff.

The Christmas Closet I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle. To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig. To be fair, these are not all my decorations. Not quite. Once my grandfather passed away and we began the painstaking process

of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection. Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors. (And now, you, dear readers.) It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within. Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks. The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own. However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters. Happy decorating.

They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building shelves in

the donation room, assisting with office work duties, and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. The Excellent Eight Eight top-notch lacrosse players from East Islip High School signed national letters of intent on November 17th, making commitments to their futures in college next September. With their proud families in attendance, each senior was congratulated by Athletic Director Stephen Restivo for their achievement. Daniel Burnham, a midfielder, will attend Georgian Court University in Lakewood Township, New Jersey, majoring in

business. Midfielder Zachary Calarco will attend Wingate University in North Carolina, majoring in business. John Clyne, a midfielder, will play for Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and major in pre-dental. Chloe Herzog, who plays attack, will attend Queens College and major in psychology. Timothy McCann, who plays attack, signed with St. Joseph’s College in

Patchogue, where he will major in criminal justice. Goalie Anthony Novellano will attend Marist College in Poughkeepsie, majoring in economics. Fellow goalie Anthony Palma signed with Stony Brook University, where he will major in business. Defenseman Jason Schlesinger will attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, majoring in aerospace engineering.

Islip resident Janissa Lloyd was honored by Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board, at November’s Town Board meeting. Janissa is an advocate and activist for The National Down Syndrome Society, and recently visited Capitol Hill together with more than 200 other advocates, to raise awareness of Down

syndrome quality of life issues. Janissa and fellow activists met with congressmen and senators, including Congressman Peter King, seeking their support of the Congressional Task Force on Down syndrome and the Able to Work Act. The National Down Syndrome Society recently unveiled its national “Law

Syndrome” Campaign, which includes Janissa on billboards at bus stops and airports throughout Washington, DC. “Law Syndrome” addresses the challenges people with Down syndrome confront when they want to follow their career dreams, get married and live independent, productive lives.

The Town of Islip donated 836 Boxes of Love and 751 turkeys to various agencies throughout the Town, who will then distribute those boxes and turkeys to families in need for Thanksgiving. This year’s count is nearly 300 more than last year, and is a new Town record! Islip Food for Hope donated $20,000 to the Town for the purchase of turkeys and holiday

essentials. Those funds, coupled with the generous donations of additional turkeys from various departments within the Town, set the new 2017 record. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr., Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, Thomas Owens, Commissioner of Parks and Recreation, Islip Food for Hope President,

Liz Mayott and volunteers from the Town, at the distribution event Tuesday. “This record is a testament to the generosity of our Town employees and Islip Food for Hope. It’s so very heartwarming to see the Town and the community come together to help those in need for Thanksgiving,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

FOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS - On Saturday November 18th, Troop 43 & Pack 153, both sponsored by St. Peter’s by the Sea in Bay Shore, participated in the BSA Sagtikos District Scouting for Food Drive. The scouts and their leaders, over a period of four hours, collected eight overflowing shopping carts of food and paper goods that were delivered to the local food pantries in the Bay Shore/Brightwaters area. The Scouts are thankful to both Stop and Shop in Bay Shore for allowing them to use the location and to all the customers for their generosity.
