Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self- sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.
So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even
permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

Family Feedback Attests To Success Turnout was immense for East Islip High School’s college fair, with more than 280 parents and students in attendance to talk to representatives of over 100 colleges and military service branches.
The event also featured NCAA and financial aid college presentations to assist families in making informed decisions about students’ future educational plans. “It was a very community-

Since 2015, Rivadeneyra has raised more than $10,000 for the FAMILY FEEDBACK ATTESTS TO SUCCESS - Turnout was immense for East hospital through his summer lemonade stand, which he built with his father. Students from Islip High School students volunteered for the Town of Islip’s Oct. 29 Michael Michelini 5K run, held Oct. 29 in the Town of Islip. Students were located throughout the course to direct runners and walkers along the route, to cheer them in, and to hand out water at the water stations and finish line. The proceeds for the race
benefit cancer research and also fund an Islip High School girls and boys lacrosse scholarship. After the race, the volunteers attended the Fireman’s Fall Festival on Main Street, where they volunteered at the American and high school post-prom booths. “It was great to see so many high school students come out to volunteer in

Shop Small Businesses to Improve The Holiday Experience
LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. Historical Society House Tour The Historical Society of Islip Hamlet will be hosting its 26th annual Holiday House Tour on Sunday, December 8, 2019 (rain, shine, snow), from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. Several historically and/or architecturally interesting homes will be decorated for the holidays as tour guides in Victorian dress greet you at each home. On Oct. 29, the East Islip Chamber of Commerce recognized Connetquot Elementary School first graders Adriana Fortunato and Sal Tringali as Students of the Month, chosen for their outstanding community service, leadership and character. Fortunato was recognized for reading a remarkable 680 books in the district’s 1,000 Book Project during a year’s time, over 200 more books than anyone in her grade. She is on pace
to finish all 1,000 books by January 2020. “This is an extremely impressive achievement,” said Principal Nicholas Bilotti. “Well done, Adriana.” Tringali was recognized for working hard to be kind and friendly to all. “Sal is highly responsible, respectful and humble,” Bilotti said. “He has a natural ability to work collaboratively with others and takes the time to listen and assist those in need. Last year,
Sal entered kindergarten a shy, quiet young man. As the year progressed, Sal grew in confidence. He began to regularly visit my office, usually with a friend and a drawing for me. He routinely would invite me back to his classroom. Most importantly, Sal is a gentleman. He’s always looking to help or console others and is the first to give up his spot in line or model exemplary behavior through his own actions. Congratulations, Sal.”

New York University, where Dr. Abraham earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dr. Abraham completed an internship at Westchester Medical Center. After finishing his residency in internal medicine at North Shore University Hospital/NYU School of Medicine, he completed a nuclear medicine residency where he served as Chief Resident at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Abraham completed his PET/CT and Nuclear Oncology fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Abraham sees this as a
very exciting time in nuclear medicine, with the coming years holding great promise for patients. “We expect more and more diagnostic tracers for specific cancers entering the clinical arena,” he said. This, in turn, will result in more targeted molecular therapies, which will then have a positive impact on patient’s lives. Currently, he is a member of both the American College of Radiology and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, serves on committees of SNMMI at the regional, and national levels and is the current Program Chairman of the SNMMI Greater NY Chapter.
