East Islip High School tennis star Karen Serina has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Adelphi University in Garden City, where she will play next fall for the NCAA Division II Panthers. The senior felt that the school was a good fit for her, in terms of both academics and athletics. After visiting the campus and meeting the players and Adelphi’s coach Michael Misiti, she appreciated the Panthers’ work ethic and said, “I liked how coach Misiti is very focused on building a strong team.” Serina, a key member of

East Islip’s varsity tennis team for six straight years, has been playing the sport since she was a preschooler. Her undefeated 92-0 singles record speaks for itself, an accomplishment she is justifiably proud of. A singles champion from seventh through 12th grade, she has earned three All-State designations and six All-County honors and won the Suffolk County Girls Tennis Coaches Association’s League III Sportsmanship Award. Another athletic highlight for Serina was earning a 2010 scholarship at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy at Randall’s Island in New York City, where she trained with some of the best coaches in the U.S. including McEnroe himself. She was one of only seven girls selected out of 200 applicants. “It emphasized intensity, which made me want to work hard,” she said. Serina plans on majoring

Back In Black By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to

observe as well, each with its own nuances – but all come down to the same basic concept: saving money. In all honesty, there has been some argument as to whether these days actually bring the best bargains, with some contending that the last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas Eve is really the best bet for cost cutting. And then there are those who, as we sit here today, have already shopped, wrapped and shipped all their presents before the turkey hits the table. It would be nice if we could all take a step back and view holiday shopping as the joyous task it was meant to be, rather

than as a chore, a checklist of tasks to be crossed off one by one. Gift giving is meant to be an expression of appreciation for those we love, a token of thoughtfulness… not a source of stress and aggravation. The second it becomes that is the moment you need to pause and reevaluate your approach. So as you enjoy your Thanksgiving dinners gathered around the table with your families and friends, savor the moment. And as you embark on your shopping journey, be it Friday, Saturday, Monday, Christmas Eve or any time in between, take that same sentiment with you. Happy Shopping!

Aileen O’Rourke, the principal at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School, successfully ran the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon on November 2nd, raising close to $5,000 in funds for the local EJ Autism Foundation. “Running the New York City Marathon has always been a goal,” said O’Rourke, who explained that the annual event had always been on her “bucket list.” This past July, she decided it was time to put a check mark next to the goal, but felt that she still needed an inspirational

purpose. Coincidently, EJ Autism founder Bea HustePetersen approached O’Rourke to ask if she knew of anyone interested in running the marathon for the foundation. “She had only one spot left on her team,” said O’Rourke, “so I felt that this was a sign.” The determined educator/athlete began training on July 21st with 2-mile runs, eventually working her way up to 20 miles prior to the marathon. “The training was challenging – both physically and mentally

– but the support from family, friends, community members and Bea was overwhelming and truly inspired me to reach my goal,” O’Rourke said. Her fundraising for EJ Autism began in late August, continuing through race time, and far surpassed her original goal, for a final donation total of $4,860. “The ‘A’ that Aileen wore on her chest didn’t just stand for autism,” said Huste-Petersen. “It’s for ‘Amazing Aileen,’ and we are so proud of her.”

2013. A Scholar-Athlete, she cited support from her parents and coaches as the source of her success. Kelly, in her second year at East Islip following a transfer back from St. John the Baptist High School, will play defense for the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. Her choice was due to the overall atmosphere at Mount Union, and her admiration for coach Emily Fisher’s coaching philosophy. Kelly will be the first Long Island athlete to play for the Raiders, and said, “I am hoping to make a big impact.” She plans to study civil engineering. Levy, a four-time AllCounty attacker, will attend Syracuse University, where she will play for coach Gary Gait and the vaunted Orange program. She visited and was impressed by the Syracuse facilities, but said, “What put it over the edge for me was the creative style that coach Gait likes to teach.” The team captain, she was ranked as the No. 4 recruit in the nation by Inside Lacrosse magazine for athletes in the Class of 2015, and was named to the 2014 Under Armour Underclass All-Americans, US Lacrosse Schoolgirls’ Division Team and Newsday’s Top 100 Players

and Players to Watch. Levy is undecided on a major but is considering communications. Pelling, a midfielder, will play for High Point University in North Carolina. “ T h e campus is absolutely beautiful and they have great academic and athletic offerings,” she said of her choice. “I think I can make an impact.” She plans to major in business administration. Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci and the Islip Town Board honored Christine Kelly, a 90 yearold Bay Shore resident who has recently published a book about historical Bay Shore. Ms. Kelly has lived in Bay Shore all her life and has been an outstanding role model to the community.

On November 15th, twenty-two teams — including two pre-rookie teams — took part in the 3rd Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational at Half Hollow Hills High School West. High school students used the same robots they built for the 2014 Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. Nursing Career Workshop Earlier this fall, the East Islip High School Medical and Health Technology Career Academy hosted alumna and nursing student Veronica Pasha, who presented a panel discussion on nursing careers. Pasha, a member of East Islip’s Class of 2011,

is currently attending the Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing at Hunter College in New York City, where she will graduate in 2015. She serves as the Breakthrough to Nursing director for the Nursing Students’ Association of New York State. Pasha and her panel of

French Friends In an exciting display of cross-cultural amity, 13 students from France paid a recent visit to East Islip Middle School to give eighth-graders studying French a chance to converse in the language with peers. The visiting French students, ranging in age from 13 to 18 and accompanied by teachers Jean Marc Emarot and

Celine Pugnet, hailed from the township of VelizyVillacoublay, a suburb of Paris near Versailles. The group’s two-week trip to the U.S., coordinated through their camp, Service Jeuness de la Ville de Velizy-Villacoublay, was the result of a two-year town fundraising effort they dubbed “20 mille lieux sur la terre,” meaning “20 thousand places on earth.”

“This was such an extraordinary and exciting encounter for our eighthgrade French language students,” said teacher Marina Poulis. “Having French and American teenagers interact with each other enabled them all to experience each other’s culture outside the classroom.”

Bradstock Raises Funds On November 10th, Brendan McCurdy and Bob Draffin, Directors, Friends of Bradstock, presented a check in the amount of $12,000 to Kevin Spellman, Board President, Camp Pa-QuaTuck, at the camp’s board meeting. With this check, Bradstock has raised a total of over $42,000 for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in the past four years. The money was raised for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck from a portion of the ticket sales from Bradstock XXI, which took place on August 30th and August 31st. Bradstock is a two-day music festival featuring musical acts performing

the best of Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz music. The event also featured poetry reading, a 5K trail run, and overnight camping. The music festival has a special connection to the camp as the late Kevin “K.C.” Cowan — who performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing in October 2011 — was the brother-inlaw of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-QuaTuck. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and

developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education.
