East Islip Elementary Students Return To In-Person Classes For East Islip’s elementary schools, Nov. 9 marked the first day that hybrid learning students were back in the building five days a week. To help make the day extra special, and welcome returning remote students, Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School voted on Election Day for a Spirit Day theme for Nov. 9, in which “Pajama Day”

won by a landslide. “Our students came to school cozy, ready to learn and ready to have fun,” said Principal Janet Jones. “They did an outstanding job entering and maneuvering in the classrooms and throughout the building. RCK’s students have taken this new normal in stride. They are strong, caring and

smart. While chatting with the students who were on the lunch line, one fourth grader told me, ‘I love RCK. Today is like the old days in third grade. It’s great to have all my friends back. I really love this school.’ It is hard for me to believe we have not had a full building since March 13.”

External Diploma Program

The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs. Anyone interested should call Western Suffolk BOCES to meet with a counselor. Call 631-667-6000, Ext. 327 to register.

Musicians from Brentwood High School Recognized by NYS Three of Brentwood High School’s student musicians earned themselves a seat in the 2020 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) All-State Ensembles as a result of their extraordinary talent and proficiency in music. Brentwood’s selectees were Wilmer Lopez, symphonic band (trumpet); Tiana Morris, soprano 2 (mixed chorus); Chloe Portillo, jazz soprano voice (vocal jazz). “It brings us great pride

to recognize our students’ talents and achievements. They are a prime example of our district’s phenomenal music department,” said Mr. Richard Loeschner. “On behalf of the Board of Education and central office, we commend Wilmer, Tiana, and Chloe, as well as their teachers who have been instrumental in their success, for the commitment and hard work throughout the years.” Brentwood’s three

students earned their place on NYSSMA’s All-State Ensembles by scoring 98 or higher during their audition for solo and ensemble festivals. This year’s performance, which was initially cancelled, will take place virtually later in the year. “We are so proud of these students and their accomplishments, as they are a great credit to their families and teachers,” said Mr. John Callan, Principal of Brentwood High School.

For Them, Christmas Joy This Year Means Fighting Hunger On Saturday, December 5 from 9:00 to 2:00 St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will host it’s monthly outdoor driveby food drop at the church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, with the doors facing St. Mark’s Lane. The food drive is a joint effort with Islip Rotary. The nonsectarian food drives, which began in July, will, as always, send all food donations to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of Long Island Cares. God’s Provisions supports 25 locations by distributing pre-boxed meals and bags of groceries to church pantries, shelters and senior communities. Director Dana Jahn said Long Island Cares provides 60% of the shelf stable resources. “In fact, they obtained a grant for us to do direct food purchase,” she said, adding that the organization also gets support from churches, local stores and community sources. There is significant support from St. Mark’s, where both parishioners and non-parishioners make food and monetary donations. At one point, there were eight people who would go out on a regular basis to shop, sort and volunteer to put bags together.

“This support helped pull us through the early months of the pandemic when the food banks were scrambling for resources,” Jahn said. “Every time I think we’re getting low, someone hands me a check. One day the shortfall was so great I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to support all of our locations, but days before St. Mark’s had a food drop which enabled us to continue.” In November, St. Mark’s and Islip Rotary filled 175 boxes to send to God’s Provisions and it’s estimated that 25,000 items were collected. “It might have even been more, “ said Organizer Irene Ross. “At one point, we just stopped counting.” “We want to be sure no one goes to bed hungry,” said St. Mark’s Rector and longtime Rotarian, The Very Reverend Richard E. Simpson, “In this time of pandemic, food insecurity is increasing, not shrinking. Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” When Astrid Fidelia, the Islip chapter’s president heard about this, she immediately mobilized everyone. They spread the word to members and to other Rotary chapters, including Bay Shore, Brentwood and Sayville among others, and they volunteer on the day of the

drives. Ross added that they are often recognized by the community surrounding the church. “In fact, some even wait for us! It’s a serious subject, but we try to keep it light and joyful with contests and challenges, kids and special waves; in December, we’re going all out for Christmas with lights, decorations, music and even a Santa. We want people to keep coming back.” The St. Mark’s food drop has also gotten community support, including from Tula Kitchen who recently donated a gift card for the winner of the September challenge. Duncan Weir, a congregant who’s also on the design team of Gorilla Wrap, creates beautiful, eyecatching banners that are hung well before the event, for those to see as they walk or jog past or stop at a traffic light, as a kind of Save the Date.” Volunteers will be at the tables in front of the church doors on St. Mark’s Lane. As always, no one needs to get out of cars; pop the trunk and volunteers will grab the food. Masks and social distancing are asked for those who do choose to get out of cars. The nonprofit services company Neon says nearly one-third of all annual giving occurs in December, with 12 percent happening over the final three days of the year. What makes Giving Tuesday unique is that it is largely fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. The day was actually created

by the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City that has been instrumental in bringing diverse groups of people together with the goals of giving back through service. The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Amid the historic coronavirus pandemic, businesses are adapting by making major changes to their operations, including increased use of technology, according to the latest PNC semi-annual survey of small and mid-size business owners and executives, which concluded Sept. 8. Eight in 10 business owners reported that they have made adaptations in response to COVID-19, including safety changes in the form of new procedures or physical modifications, while others have adopted work-from-home policies. “Business owners have learned that the previous status quo won’t work now. The majority of businesses have reconfigured their operations and for many, these changes will be permanent,” says PNC chief economist, Gus Faucher.

“Their confidence may be shaken, but we know through the history of this survey that business owners are resilient and they know how to adapt to change.” According to the survey, half of businesses report increased use of technology since the outbreak began. Nearly three in 10 have added or increased the use of electronic or touchless payment systems, electronic/ website-enabled sales or electronic banking/cash flow management services and 19 percent increased use of fraud/identity protection tools. The pandemic has also forced many businesses to shake up their product lineups to better align with consumers’ new habits. A third of business owners report making changes either to the way they sell or deliver their products and

services or to the types of products and services they offer. Despite these positive signs of transformation and resilience, the drop in business activity over recent months forced many to take drastic measures through workforce reductions; nearly four in 10 businesses have cut workers since the start of the pandemic, although for 87 percent of those, the decrease is considered temporary or a furlough. In fact, 58 percent of the businesses who had temporary layoffs or furloughs have already begun rehiring. Faucher said that while the worst may be over and economic activity is on the rebound, the “new normal” doesn’t mean a return to robust job and business growth that existed early in 2020. European colonists likely brought apple seeds and trees with them when they emigrated to North America, introducing that part of the world to the

apple tree. Records from the Massachusetts Bay Company indicate that apples were being grown in New England as early as 1630. Americans also enjoy the popular story of Johnny Appleseed, who was believed to have distributed apple seeds and trees to settlers across the United States. While apples can be produced from seeds, nowadays many apples are propagated by grafting so that they retain the parent tree’s characteristics of flavor, hardiness and insect resistance. Apples and Symbolism Apples have become the main symbols of many different stories and tales throughout history. Apples are linked to the Biblical tale of Adam and Eve and their ultimate expulsion from the Garden of Eden. However, the apple is never named in any of the religious texts as the fruit Eve picked from the tree of knowledge. Apples have appeared in fairy tales and folklore. The Brothers Grimm had the character “Snow White” fall ill after eating a poisoned apple. In Norse mythology, the goddess Iounn was the appointed keeper of golden apples that kept the Aesir young forever. Apples have also played a role in science, most

notably Sir Isaac Newton’s study of gravity. While myth surrounds the story of Newton and an apple falling from a nearby tree, it’s likely that witnessing an apple fall from a tree did spark something in the famed scientist. Most Popular Apple Varieties Many varieties of apple stand out as perennial favorites. In the United States, the Red Delicious is the country’s most popular grown apple. It was called the hawkeye when discovered in 1872. The Golden Delicious is the second most popular grown apple in America.
