ifth Avenue School celebrated Native American History Month with a visit from the Journeys Through Native American Territory company. A life-sized teepee was erected in the gym, and students not only got the chance to have a mock pow-wow inside the teepee, but they learned about the Native American culture and many of the traditions and observances acknowledged by Native Americans. Recovery Breakfast On Sunday, November 6th, Long Island’s educators, treatment professionals, and community members gathered in recognition of substance abuse recovery at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s 27th annual Peter Sweisgood Breakfast. This family-focused community event was held at the IBEW Local 25 Hall in Hauppauge, NY and featured powerful stories of personal struggles with addiction, as well as highlighting the efforts

of addiction service providers and advocates for changes to policies affecting those suffering from substance abuse disorders. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) honored Father Stephen Donnelly from St. Patrick’s Church in Huntington, NY whose outstanding accomplishments have helped promote awareness, and helped many individuals enter treatment for addiction. The event, headed up by

Claudia Ragni of the Kenneth Peters Center and Nancy Lawless of Seafield Center, raised more than $50,000 to support LICADD’s work in the community. LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW,CASAC summed up the event, “Each year, this gathering is an important opportunity for the Long Island recovery community to reﬂect on victories and the miracle of recovery, as well as to rally around the crucial issues for the coming year.

We have made great strides in 2016 on behalf of Long Islanders struggling with addiction, but there is much left to accomplish.” Families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction across Long Island and every day the region loses at least one person to fatal overdose. However, it remains uncommon for health plans to cover comprehensive addiction treatment, while unnecessary bureaucratic barriers often stand between

someone receiving the help they need and remaining trapped in an overwhelming – and completely treatable – disease cycle. In addition, the event’s Recovery Speaker, discussed her own inspiring journey into and back out of the depths of addiction. Her story underlined the extremely treatable nature of addiction as a disease and offered hope to those who battle this illness or have a family member struggling with it. This community event

Of Fuzz & Refurbishing What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish. It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like. Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.

Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

inferior. Too straight, too shiny and slippery…but the suction cup, that’s the greatest. How I do love to sit perched atop it, resting my weary fins after a long day of swimming laps. After a few days of fishy antibiotics, my little fuzz problem seems to have gone away. Now, I patiently wait for my beautiful blue fins to regenerate so I can be back to my old spectacular self. ‘Til then, enjoy your turkey and your football, your shopping and your decorating, and stay tuned for my next words of wisdom. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. The Suffolk County Parks Department, in cooperation with the Town of Southampton Parks Department will host the annual Big Duck Holiday Lighting Ceremony on Wednesday, November 30th, at 7 p.m. This year’s festivities will include live entertainment including a duck carol sing-a-long led by the Riverhead Middle School Show Choir, a visit from the LI Ducks Mascot “Quackerjack,” and of course the ever-anticipated arrival of Santa Claus courtesy of the Flanders Fire Department. “The lighting of the Big Duck has become a tradition for Suffolk residents as an official kick-off for the holiday season,” said Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone. The Big Duck Store will be open for the evening, so you can pick up some eggstraspecial holiday gifts. The Big Duck is located on Route 24 in Flanders, one mile East of the Riverhead Traffic Circle. Signing on to Molloy

East Islip High School senior and All-County softball star Courtney Greene signed a National Letter of Intent on November 10th with Molloy College. She will attend the Rockville Centre college next fall, pitching for the Lions, and plans to major in accounting. “The business program is highly talked about,” Greene said regarding her selection. “I met with the dean of business, and that drew me to the program. There’s a lot of opportunity there for me.” A starting pitcher and first baseman on the varsity squad since eighthgrade, Greene earned AllConference honors as a freshman and sophomore, and All-County and AllConference as a junior. Other accolades include being named to the All-

Long Island first team last year and a NFSA Academic All American in 2014. Greene also played travel ball with LI Sudden Impact Gold, earning a 6-0 fall pitching record under coach Bill Havdouglas. She had a remarkable season last year, leading the Lady Redmen in five consecutive victories to reach the Suffolk County final. Greene won 17 games and set a new school record in striking out 176 batters in 155 innings. She notched her 500th career strikeout this season as well, finishing the year with 518, another school record. In a memorable semifinal battle against Eastport-South Manor, she pitched 12 innings, struck out 13 batters and hit a home run that cut the lead in half. On offense, Greene batted .327 (.375 in the playoffs) and hit five home runs (including four playoff homers), 32 hits and 27 RBI. “I made so many memories with this team,” Greene said. “I’m upset it’s my last year but it’s been a lot of fun.” Going into her senior year, she is East Islip’s alltime strikeout leader with

525, second in RBI with 58 and second in doubles with 16. She also stands second in wins, needing only seven this spring to become the Lady Redmen’s all-time leader. “Courtney has blossomed from a shy, timid eighth-grade varsity pitcher into a confident, reliable and mature senior athlete,” said East Islip’s softball coach Jason McGowan. “She has put in the work on and off the field these last four years as a varsity player, and led a tremendously young team to the Suffolk County AA finals last spring. As our pitcher, she pitched every game and won against the best softball teams in the county through our playoff run leading up to the county finals. She is one of our captains, and does a great job leading our younger players. I look forward to Courtney having a monster senior season on the mound and at the plate where she has become one of Suffolk’s best hitters.” Photo courtesy of: East Islip School District

Great South Bay Run The first Northwell Health Great South Bay Run on October 1st had more than 700 participants race through the streets of Bay Shore and raised $1,689 for a group focused on better health care and health education in the Town of Islip. The money raised will go toward Southside Hospital’s Community Outreach and Health Education Council (COHEC), which includes members of the hospital as well as local community groups, faith organizations

and schools working to improve health care and health education in Central Islip, Brentwood and Bay Shore. The group has been in existence for about a year and creates and manages events such as free health care screenings and medical career days. “The COHEC group has been doing such amazing work to reach out into these communities to help ensure everyone is able to make good healthcare decisions for themselves and their families,” said Donna Moravick, NP,

executive director of Southside Hospital. “We appreciate the funds the run raised for this group, which will help further its mission and reach.” The event, which included 5K and 10K races along with a half marathon, was previously sponsored by Entenmann’s. Northwell Health took over the management of the event this year. The next race is slated to take place September 23rd, 2017.

CONGRESSMAN VISITS - United States Congressman Peter T. King visited the Central Islip School District recently to meet with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Howard M. Koenig, School Board President Norman A. Wagner and School Board Members Fred Philips, Dan Devine and Edna Carbajal to address federal funding for educational initiatives. The visit included a tour of the Early Childhood Center. BRIDGE BUILDING - Students in Mrs. Godfrey’s fifth grade class at South Country School were engaged in a team building STEM activity that challenged them to construct a bridge made of gumdrops and toothpicks. The bridge was to span a 6-inch gorge and the challenge was to see whose design could support the most books. Teams were engaged in a process of brainstorming, designing, building, evaluating, and refining their designs.

On October 31st, the kindergarten, first and second grade students of Mary G. Clarkson School celebrated Halloween , the first holiday of the fall season, with a dynamic costume parade.

Parents watched as classroom teachers escorted their students around the field of the school. Every type of costume and character was represented, including a cameo appearance from

the awesome characters of the movie “Inside Out.” After the parade concluded students returned to their classrooms and continued celebrating with various holiday activities.

Grant Awarded On behalf of the Advisory Committee to All for the East End Fund (AFTEE), the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF), has awarded a $2,500 grant to Family Service League (FSL) as one of the recipients of the AFTEE Building Stronger Neighborhood Program.

AFTEE organizers have set up the fund with the intention of distributing grants to various nonprofits working to better the quality of life in the five East End townships. This grant will assist FSL in funding the Community Behavioral Health Collaborative (CBHC)

which supports youth mental health programs for children residing on the East End of Long Island. The program includes workshops for town residents and education professionals that will address children’s mental health issues, and help establish a better

Today, the Islip Town Board voted 4-1 to approve the 2017 operating budget, which includes an increase in taxes of $4 per month for the average homeowner. Dozens of residents turned out at the Budget Hearing November 10th to voice their opinions, the majority of whom expressed their support of the modest $48 per year increase. While it is always the goal not to raise taxes, and to make every effort to stay under the State tax cap, it was not possible this year. This

Think 6th grade is too soon to start preparing for college? After Scholar Shirt Day, the students at Bay Shore Middle School can tell you why it’s not! On October 28th, sixth grade students were each given a t-shirt from a college to wear throughout the day. During a special assembly that featured

performances by the Bay Shore Cheerleaders, students heard from guidance counselors and Bay Shore High School seniors about how they can begin creating good habits now that will help them get into college. Advice such as putting an emphasis on homework, spending time thinking about who you

want to become and getting involved in activities at school was shared. This event kicks off a series of meetings the Guidance Department will have with sixth grade students to introduce them to all of the assistance the office can provide.

so helpful in setting up and interacting with the students,” said Polhemus. “He is just a great guy and makes the classes more fun.” Assistant Principal Rose Brown agreed. “The children and the staff love Oscar,” she said. “I think he is great role model to our students. They love to see him come in his wheelchair and then get out of the chair and start moving. That’s very motivating to the students.” Oscar said that he is happy that he can give back to the organization that gave him so much. “UCP showed me that there is more out there for me,” he said. “I love coming to the

school, being around the children and making them happy.” The Children’s Center is in the forefront of Early Intervention, Preschool, and School Age programming, serving over 70 infants and children with disabilities. The Center uses specialty programs such as a feeding program - Food Exploration and Sensory Techniques (F.E.A.S.T.) and assistive technology services. The school continues to introduce new and innovative programs designed to meet the needs of children with disabilities and their families.

Speaking on Sobriety In recognition of Red Ribbon Week at the end of October, seventhand eighth-graders at Islip Middle School heard Stephen Hill from Speak Sobriety share his story of substance abuse. Hill discussed his personal struggles while

highlighting the benefits of living a clean and sober life. “Mr. Hill also discussed issues of peer pressure, bullying, anxiety and depression,” said school social worker Shari Pennington. “Our students and staff were very moved

by his story.” After the assembly, Hill connected with many students individually, answering their questions regarding the dangers of experimenting with drugs and alcohol.
