There was no admission fee to attend, which included a screening of the comedy film, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. On October 24th, the winners of Canstruction® Long Island 2013’s annual design competition were announced at its awards reception held at RXR Plaza in Uniondale. Nine teams of architects, engineers, designers, contractors, vendors, students and community groups built colossal structures made entirely of cans of food, which are donated to Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Food Bank. This year’s event collected over 32,000 cans. The winning structures for 2013 are: Juror’s Favorite and Best Use of Labels “Without Change, There Would be no Butterflies” Lines & Designs and Social Harmony Structural Ingenuity and Most Cans (6,048 cans) “Send Hunger Out of
this World” H2M Architects and Engineers Best Meal “Hunger is no Game” Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. Honorable Mention “Demolish Hunger ... 175,000 meals for hungry Long Islanders. “These amazing structures compete in a variety of categories designed to showcase the talent and creativity of the professionals in the built environment,” said Tracy Lobdell, Executive Director, Canstruction® Long Island. “The teams have held fundraisers, solicited donations, and conducted raffles to raise the money needed to purchase the thousands of cans required to bring their designs to life. On the night of the buildout, they are given 12 hours to defy expectation, logic and gravity as they assemble these fantastic creations.” The exhibit, located at RXR Plaza in Uniondale, was open to the public every day from Friday, October 25th through Wednesday, November 6th, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost

Over 400 bylines later, there are times when choosing new material is difficult. Sure, there are plenty of sources – just an average day-in-thelife could probably generate a dozen or so possibilities – but not all inspirations should necessarily be captured in writing. Some are better left to the imagination, where they may one day flourish into more improved, developed ideas. In any case, the fact that I inspire anyone is truly appreciated. When you have a passion for your career, the hope is always that this comes through to others. Whether for an “A” in school, or a fan letter from a stranger…

What to write… It’s funny, as you go through daily life, there are so many topics that seem worthy of a column; yet, when I actually sit down to write my weekly contribution to this newspaper, I am often at a loss for words. I recently received a letter from a supportive reader saying, in part, that he was writing “to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” True enough. I must admit, when I first became interested in the field of Journalism, it was mainly due to the fact that I saw it as a wonderful cross-section of all those topics which interested me – English, History, perhaps some Political Science, Photography… really, the possibilities were endless. As elementary writing assignments
turned to full-fledged papers in middle school, followed by “true” journalistic work on my high school newspaper, I was sold on the career choice. This passion for the field only increased throughout college, as I was afforded the opportunity to explore various genres ranging from hard-hitting investigative pieces to in-depth features and profiles to the more subjective movie/music review. And then there was my senior Honors Tutorial and Thesis, a 50-page dissertation on the effects of September 11th on Journalism as a whole, for better or for worse. I had hopes of eventually expanding upon this mini-novel to broaden its scope into a book of sorts; but as time passed and the immediacy of the moment escaped our collective grasp, it seemed that hindsight would change the entire course of my research. And so it remained, 50 pages of reflection, compiled

Adoption is a commitment for the pet’s entire life. One easy way to find adoptable pets and shelters is by searching PetSmart Charities’ adoptable pet locator. You can enter criteria such as age, breed and size of the pet you want. Most pets available through adoption are already spayed or neutered, vaccinated and licensed, and are often microchipped for a very affordable adoption fee. they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet. “We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home. Pet Points To Ponder If you’re considering adoption, here are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Space: Do you live in an apartment or a house? Do you have a big backyard? Different types of dogs and cats require different amounts of exercise and space. Zhong and Leung knew they needed to take into consideration the size of their home as part of their decision to adopt. 2. Time: Decide how much time you can dedicate to caring for a dog or cat. Cats can be more independent and often require less time for daily
families than ever are in need of help with food especially with the cuts in food stamp programs. Lighthouse Mission feeds more than 3,000 people a week and needs frozen turkeys (or chickens) and all the trimmings - canned and boxed potatoes, stuffing, veggies, cranberry and gravy - to help those families in need. Food will be distributed the

Gillian Sokol a resident of Great River and a junior at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School, was one of over 40 Junior Commissioners from 11 of Islip Town high schools sworn in to launch the JC Program of Keep Islip Clean for the year. KIC is an organization dedicated to preserving the world and ultimately improving the living conditions in Islip. The KIC Junior Commissioner Program
is a component of KIC’s Education Program. KIC Junior Commissioners are High School students recommended by their school principal as having demonstrated environmental concern as well as social, civic and academic responsibility. These young people are officially sworn in as KIC Junior Commissioners by the Islip Town Board. KIC’s objective is to enable and encourage these young citizens to play an active
role in making Islip a cleaner and more beautiful place in which to live and to instill in them a sense of pride and ownership for their community. Students at Connetquot Elementary School – three second-grade classes of teachers Carolyn Biscardi, Leslie Davis, Melissa Love and Maria Marinelli, and three self-contained second-through-thirdgrade classes of teachers Crystal Ann Chiari, Danielle Sternberg and Elizabeth Vann – took field trips on October 30th and
31st to Woodside Nursery in Patchogue. The students enjoyed a seasonal hands-on experience as they visited a farm and learned more about the life cycle of a pumpkin. They also picked and decorated their own pumpkins, heard a scary story and learned how to trick-or-treat safely. “All of the students
really enjoyed this fun, educational trip,” said Love. “They had a great time and were able to carry over science and social skills,” added Chiari. “Afterward we did a writing activity where we sequenced the events and wrote about our favorite part of the field trip.”

Award-winning author A.S. King, whose accolades include the 2011 Michael L. Printz Award Honor, visited Islip High School to speak with students about her latest book, Reality Boy, as well as about life skills, bullying and selfesteem, and navigating safe relationships. “A.S. King’s unique
style and powerful writing resonates with teens,” remarked school librarian Gina Seymour, who organized the visit. “She incorporates honest situations with strong male and female characters who realize they have the power to make a change in their lives. Her message that we must ‘do something, say

ZOO VISIT - On Wednesday, October 16th, 3rd graders at Gardiner Manor School took a field trip to the Bronx Zoo, one of the largest zoos in the world. As part of the 3rd grade Science curriculum, students learn about the living and nonliving things that comprise an ecosystem. At the zoo, students were able to observe animals from many different regions and ecosystems of the world, including gorillas from the Congo, Siberian tigers and the animals of Madagascar. This year, students were able to enjoy the “Total Experience,” using special passes that allowed them to visit the new Dinosaur Safari, the butterfly garden, ride the monorail and see a 4D movie featuring characters from Ice Age.

When second-graders in teacher Donna Marshall’s classroom at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School worked on a nonfiction project during the month of October, student Isabella Eason chose to research Locks of Love. The organization provides prosthetic hairpieces made from donated ponytails to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss, aiding them in restoring their confidence
and self-esteem. The research project spurred Eason to action. “After doing a fabulous job on her poster project, Isabella took it a step further and made the decision to cut her hair to donate to Locks of Love, right in our classroom,” explained Marshall. With Eason’s parents, Maurice and Nancy, in attendance, hairdresser Dale LaFata was on hand on November 4th to administer the haircut, snipping Eason’s ponytail

to the admiring cheers of the supportive students. “What a memorable experience for Isabella as well as her classmates,” said Marshall. “We are so proud of Isabella for donating her hair and making another child happy,” said Nancy Eason. “This incredibly selfless act of true kindness can hopefully bring more awareness to this wonderful cause.”

Students from Bay Shore High School recently joined the fight against breast cancer by organizing the 12th Annual Breast Cancer Brunch For A Cure to promote research and awareness. Over the past four years, Bay Shore High School has raised almost $18,000 for Good Samaritan Hospital’s breast health services with proceeds benefitting the development of educational materials for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.
“We wanted to play an active role in breast cancer awareness in our community,” said this year’s student event chairs, Marc Barreda, Carly Cox, Corinne Schmidt and Jacqueline Side. Good Samaritan earned a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Good Samaritan’s nurse
navigators guide patients from the moment of diagnosis through treatment and into survivorship, helping them to overcome any obstacles. The entire team is committed to providing timely and expert care until the completion of treatment and beyond. (NAPSI)—Teens are more optimistic about their financial future but may depend longer on their parents, according to a major new survey. Teens also expressed concern over paying for higher education. Among the Teens and Personal Finance Survey’s key findings, conducted by Junior Achievement USA® and The Allstate Foundation: • More than half of teens think students are borrowing too much to pay for college, yet only 9 percent report they are currently saving money for college. • Nearly 30 percent have not talked with their parents about paying for college. • Nearly one in three teens thinks he or she will be 25 to 27 years old before becoming financially independent. • Teens are unsure about
their ability to budget (23 percent), use credit cards (20 percent) or invest money (34 percent). • The majority of teens (76 percent) still report the best time to learn about money management is in kindergarten through high school, but only 29 percent reported programs currently in place. • Of the 33 percent of teens who say they do not use a budget, 42 percent are “not interested” and more than a quarter (26 percent) think “budgets are for adults.” • More than one-third of teens are either unsure or think their parents do not talk with them enough about money and budgeting. “From our findings, we can infer that teens expect to live with their parents longer. It is interesting to see this shift in teens thinking they will remain financially dependent
on their parents,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and chief executive officer of Junior Achievement USA. Since 2005, the organization, in partnership with The Allstate Foundation, has helped more than 1.2 million students set personal goals about money and make wise financial choices. The program, JA Economics for Success®, also empowers students to develop, plan and set goals to help protect themselves from unexpected financial pitfalls. According to Don Civgin, president and chief executive officer of Allstate Financial, there is an urgent need for parents and children to broach the subject. “Parents continue to be the No. 1 influence on teens when it comes to money,” he said, “so there is tremendous opportunity for family conversation.”
Calling All Readers: Input Welcome! East Islip High School art teacher Daniel Figliozzi’s Drawing 1 and 2 students started the year off using one of the most basic yet essential elements of art. Line was used to create one-point perspective hallway drawings, done on site.
Each student chose a specific location in the school lobby and used his or her viewfinder to map out a composition, using drawing boards and rulers to complete the process. “My students had fun going down to the lobby every day,” said Figliozzi.
“Drawing on site and from life is always a challenge because the objects in the space can easily change, requiring the artist to question their drawing and make edits if need be.”
Mike Delia, a physical education teacher at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School, was invited to be a guest speaker at Springfield College in Massachusetts on Veterans Day. Springfield, located in the city of the same name, is famous for being the site where the sport of basketball was invented. Delia was asked by Keith Bugbee, the head coach of
the college’s men’s lacrosse team, to visit Bugbee’s Principles and Problems of Coaching class. He and the 25 Springfield students in the class will discuss strategies on how to communicate effectively with parents using preseason parent/player meetings. “I’m excited and grateful to Coach Bugbee for giving me the opportunity
to share my years of experience in the coaching profession with his students,” said Delia, who is in his 27th year in the East Islip School District. Currently the girls junior varsity basketball coach at East Islip High School, Delia has coached multiple sports for 32 years at age levels ranging from youth to college.

In school, I am taking a class called Sociology. For this class, we have been instructed to do a research project. My topic for this project is how the media influences children into engaging in deviant behavior. For this project, I am employing many methods of gathering my data. Students in today’s world are faced with obstacles each and every day. America’s youth is pressured into conforming to society due to the increased prevalence of negative influences depicted in the media. Bad habits are developed as a result of repeated exposure to the products
that companies try to push to children. Via the media, messages of cigarettes, alcohol and other deviant behavior are justified. Because students see their favorite athletes using a product on the TV screen or a celebrity endorsing a certain brand, they will be pushed into buying that item. If companies tell children that “all the cool kids are doing it,” they are going to lead the kids down the wrong path. There are many methods that a company can use in seducing the consumer. The way we display a product to our youth has a direct impact on the way that they utilize it. For instance, the way the
media highlights alcohol, cigarettes and size zero clothing prods kids into purchasing them. If the media displays a product in a positive light, our youth will view the product in a positive light. Inversely, if a good is depicted negatively, a child will not be as likely to pick up that product. The problem is, the media portrays the worst of items in the best of ways. A New Tactic In The War Against Cholesterol There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise
while others will turn to prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often
referred to as the “good cholesterol” because of the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. Heart-Healthy Ingredients One of the main active ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids. Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control anti-inflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.
