County Championships

he 6th grade Islip Football Buccaneers have won two County Championships and have finished their season 10-0 for the second straight year. This team was the little engine that could. Each player gave 100% all the time during practices, scrimmages and, more importantly, when games were on the line. Both teams waited for approximately 30 minutes for the game to resume, and when it did, the Buccaneers were rejuvenated!

Past Peak Well there it is. I hope you enjoyed autumn. Did you savor the glorious foliage on your drive to work? Did you pick enough apples and pumpkins to last you through your winter hibernation? Did you take in the requisite corn mazes and haunted houses and eat far too much Halloween candy in the process? Like it or not, once those leaves begin to brown and ﬂutter to the ground en masse, autumn is officially past its peak. Forecasters are already beginning

to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit. There will be plenty of time for all that over the next

month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter. Slow down. Savor. Repeat for next season. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things. Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week. Be thankful we have four seasons to enjoy, and be thankful for all those whom you are blessed to share them with.

Sherwood Celebrates In recognition of Veterans Day, Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School hosted a daylong, school-wide veterans celebration. To kickoff the celebration, the students enjoyed David Jack’s Spirit of America cultural arts program. The PTA-sponsored program

featured a journey through the history of America’s music and introduced the students to songwriters of America’s most famous patriotic songs, including Yankee Doodle. Throughout the rest of day, the staff focused lessons to truly teach the students what Veteran’s

Day is and honored veterans, including writing letters of thanks. To prepare for the day, students used the library to research the different branches of military service, colored photos and presented what they learned to their classmates.

KanJamming For Red Ribbons East Islip High School’s Student Against Destructive Decisions Club sponsored a KanJam tournament on October 15th to raise funds for the district’s Red Ribbon program. Students and teachers enjoyed playing KanJam, a popular game using a Frisbee disc and two

scoring containers that serve as goals. Among the participants were East Islip teachers Daniel Faulkman, Mike Festa, Linda Leach, Carene Mahoney, Mike Petre and Derk Reinking. Teams were charged $10 to play, competing for a $50 grand prize. The winners of the SADD Club KanJam Tournament were

Finishing At The Top

The 6th grade Islip Football Buccaneers have won two County Championships and have finished their season 10-0 for the second straight year. This team was the little engine that could. Each player gave 100% all the time during practices, scrimmages and, more importantly, when games were on the line. This past Saturday, November 8th, at the Suffolk County PAL complex in Holbrook,

they played the only other undefeated team, the Wyandanch Warriors. The Islip Bucs were losing 19-14 at the beginning of the 4th quarter when the entire PAL stadium went dark - lights out! Both teams waited for approximately 30 minutes for the game to resume, and when it did, the Buccaneers were rejuvenated! They came back to win 26-19 in a nail bitter. The Wyandanch Warriors were amazing competitors

and showed true sportsmanship. After the handshake and during the postgame celebration, the Wyandanch coach spoke to the Islip Bucs, telling them that this was his hardest game ever played in 36 years of coaching. It was a true complement to the team! The Islip Buccaneers have been coached for the past six years by Jason Vitale and his staff. Congratulations to the boys for their determination and hard work!

Undefeated Season East Islip Middle School’s girls soccer team carried on its winning tradition this fall, adding another outstanding undefeated season to their accomplishments.

The young athletes’ skills improved dramatically throughout the season, powering them past all opponents. “The girls played some tough games but the

players were always able to work together as a team in order to defeat their opponents,” said Barbara Huether, who has coached the team for the past 15 years.

The fair also provided a crucial chance for students to network faceto-face with more than 100 college representatives in attendance, so that when they are ready to make their choice for postsecondary education, they will have already taken the

first step in introducing themselves. “Parents and students were delighted to have this opportunity to meet so many college reps right in their own high school,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. He credits the event’s growing success over the last dozen years to collaboration with a consortium of colleges. “I am able to work with the consortium and bring more colleges each year to our students,”

Malinowitzer said. “We started 13 years ago with only 50 colleges attending this event, and now we have over 130 colleges and growing.” East Islip’s college fair evening also included two useful seminars for parents and students – a college financial aid workshop presented by Gordon Rowe from St. Joseph’s College and an NCAA requirements workshop presented by guidance counselor Jessica Pignataro.

This innovative program was designed and created through the CAPS Bullying Prevention Center and is the first of its kind in the region. SUSS teams are
