Solar Observation

Science and Health teacher, Mr. Senatore, teaches the ins and outs of the sciences that ground us and also has his students looking to the Heavens for more clues into the Universe that surrounds us. With the followup Lunar Observation that Mr. Senatore organized, students had an opportunity to gather in the early evening and enjoy some time viewing other celestial bodies, as well. Assembling at twilight, students could see the moon and stars through the high-powered lens and see the features of the moon up close and personal. This fed nicely into the solar system projects the students had been working on and rounded out the classroom learning in a more tangible way.

As the air chills and we brace ourselves for earlier sunsets, students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School are hitting the books hard and enjoying every minute of the group activities and hands-on projects that bolster the core curriculum skills developed in the classroom. First graders learned all about owls and then created their own edible ones, taking their math lessons on geometric shapes to a level that was both concrete and a ton of fun. Taking another lesson from nature, first

graders also made acorn projects and decided they enjoyed them as much as their squirrel friends did. It is a thing of beauty to witness a room full of 6 year olds find their inner peace as they round out each day together by saying a decade of the Rosary and adding their own special intentions. Concept to Creation By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s 5 o’clock on Friday the 13th, deadline day, “odd day” (11/13/15), whatever you want to call it… And here I am contemplating my column, the final piece of the puzzle that is the week’s work here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. By the time you read this, our holiday issue of Seasons™ Magazine will be on the streets, featuring the best of Long Island happenings, some highlights from New York City, and an array of helpful hints to make the shopping and decorating rush go as smoothly as possible. We have even mixed in a few recipes for you to sample at your next holiday gathering. For those unfamiliar with this sister publication,

create fliers that promote good manners. “My students read Mr. Dolan’s list and discussed the importance of being on time and prepared, not only in school, but in life in general,” said Avella. Gaining valuable

experience in desktop publishing and graphic communications, the students learned how to use computers as tools for design. The fliers were later put on display in a case near Principal Mark Bernard’s office.

Budget Adopted Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced today Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget has been unanimously adopted by all the members of the Islip Town Board with few changes. “I am very happy to report there were very few changes to the proposed budget presented a couple of weeks ago and the Town Board has unanimously adopted Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

“In addition to adopting a fiscally conservative, efficient and transparent budget, we have all worked very hard to provide Islip residents with the information they need to understand where their tax dollars go. Residents may view the details about this budget on the town’s website,” Supervisor Carpenter added. The Town of Islip’s 2016 Adopted Operating Budget, which reflects a very modest increase of 1.54% over the 2015 budget, is available on

the town website at www. islipny.gov. Some of the services and expenses covered by the Operating Budget include: Administrative, Assessment, Building and Grounds Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance, Traffic Safety, Tax Collection, Town Clerk, Public Safety, Parks and Recreation, Water Management, Youth Services, Highway Repair and Snow Removal.

Young was appointed executive director of the National Urban League in 1961, Young won an impressive reputation as a national black activist who helped bridge the gap between white political and business leaders and poor blacks and militants. Under his direction the organization grew from 60 to 98 chapters and shifted its focus from middle-class concerns to the needs of the urban poor. He was particularly credited with almost singlehandedly persuading corporate America and major foundations to aid the civil rights movement through financial contributions in support of self-help programs for jobs, housing, education, and family rehabilitation.
