Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset. Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken. Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point. The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time. In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat. The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least. Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases. This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts. And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come. That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

will be visiting the club on December 8th. The club expanded this year, hitting a record number of 27 members, all excited and committed readers. “With Halloween a few days away, we couldn’t

Entrance Transformed A terrific transformation has taken place at Islip Middle School with the addition of new gardens to beautify the main entrance. The project, two years in the making, was led by special education teacher Suzanne Lange, who has pulled double duty as the chairperson of the middle school’s Standards of Excellence Committee for the past few years. “Suzanne was able to harness the energy of many entities to see this project come to fruition,” said Dr. Timothy Martin, the principal. “This was no easy task when you take budgeting, clubs,

volunteers and timelines into account.”’ Taking advantage of favorable weather, a creative coalition – including SOE Committee members; KIC Club, student government, art and technology students; and the buildings and grounds crew – worked during the course of the two months to plant the two new garden beds to enhance the school’s curb appeal. Retired math teacher Barbara Knoth and her horticulturist husband Bob volunteered to spearhead the garden display. An assortment of purple asters and gold

mums, as well as native Long Island grasses and shrubs, now adorn the building facade. The native plants will be incorporated into an outdoor learning environment and living classroom. According to Dr. Martin, the garden project is not finished, but is a work in progress seeking to grow and expand as the creativity continues. Expressing his excitement with the makeover, he said, “There are all kinds of first impressions, and when people approach the doors of Islip Middle School, they should get the impression that we care.”

PEER TO PEER - Sometimes our peers can be great teachers! Students on Team 61 at Bay Shore Middle School recently had the opportunity to spend some time teaching their classmates about the topics they are studying.

Coastal Cleanup The 2016 International Coastal Cleanup came to a successful conclusion recently, with volunteers around the world providing data on waterway litter to the Ocean Conservancy in Washington. The information compiled during this annual

environmental effort is used to identify pollution trends. Keep Islip Clean sponsored fifteen groups for the event. These volunteers gathered information about the litter they removed from marine environments,

including beaches along the south shore stretching from West Islip to Bayport, Orowoc Creek, Champlin Creek, Knapp Lake and Lake Ronkonkoma. The ICC highlights the negative, far reaching impact that litter has on the environment.

East Islip High School senior Emily Orski recently completed her seven step project toward attaining the prestigious Girl Scouts of America Gold Award, utilizing her creative talents to crochet blankets and hats and then donating them to pediatric

cancer patients at two local hospitals, Southside Hospital in Bay Shore and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. “I chose this project because I have always had in interest in pediatric care, and the gratitude

and thanks that I received from the hospitals made every second worth it,” said Orski, who will receive her Gold Award, which is the highest level of achievement in Girl Scouting, at an upcoming ceremony later this year.

Good Choices Students and staff at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School celebrated Red Ribbon Week at the end of October, marking each day with a different theme related to making good choices and leading a healthy lifestyle. On Monday, everyone wore their favorite sports jersey to “team up” against drugs, with a focus on athletic participation leading to a healthy mind and body. On Tuesday, the district colors of red, white, and black were everywhere, demonstrating spirit and pride in the school and community; on Wednesday, neon colors filled the hallways to signify that JFK’s students are “bright” and will make

smart decisions; and for Thursday, T-shirts bore positive messages like “Do the Right Thing!” On the last day of the week, students wore their favorite clothes as a message to be confident and respect each other for who they are. The students also created ribbons to decorate the school’s hallways, containing affirming statements about good decisions like “eat healthy,” “be kind to others” and “treat others as you want to be treated.” JFK’s PTA surprised the appreciative students with a gift of earbuds to promote listening to music with positive lyrics and messages. School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club also visited to speak with JFK’s fifth-graders about bullying and the dangers of substance abuse. “It was wonderful to see the young adults of East Islip encouraging the JFK students to think critically about serious decisions they will be making about their future,” said JFK Principal Deborah Smith. “We were grateful for the time they spent having important conversations about being drug free and speaking up when bullying is witnessed. It was truly a meaningful week of reflection on making great choices.”

BACK TO THE STONE AGE - Do you know when the Paleolithic time period was? Students on Team 62 at Bay Shore Middle School do! The students recently completed CURRICULUM MAPPING - On October 28th, teachers at the 3rd and 4th grade a unit about the Paleolithic Period, also known as the Old Stone Age. levels at South Country School took part in curriculum mapping. This allows the teachers across the entire grade level to work together to create lessons on particular topics. At this session, 3rd grade teachers mapped out lessons on opinion/argument writing while 4th grade teachers worked on a personal narrative unit.

STEM Projects

CALLING ANTARCTICA - On October 26th, students in grade 6 at Bay Shore Middle School had the opportunity to speak with a scientist in Antarctica! The students gathered in the school’s library to take part in a Skype conversation with Laura Goetz, a marine biologist currently conducting research in Antarctica. The students heard about what Goetz has experienced during this research trip and were able to ask her questions about her job, Antarctica and marine science.

Second-grade students at St. Mary School have been working on STEM (science, technology, engineer and math) projects for Halloween. One project involved making a catapult to see how far the candy pumpkin could be thrown. The

students then used tape measures to measure the distance using centimeters. Another project was to build a candy tower. The students worked in groups to design the tallest tower they could build without it toppling over. The final project was

to design and build a “spider web” bridge using yarn. The bridge had to hold as many connecting cubes as possible without collapsing. Credit for these projects goes to Brooke Brown for her ideas on Teacher Pay Teacher.

MIXING IT UP - Mix It Up at Lunch Day encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries. That is just what our scholars at Gardiner Manor School did on Friday, October 28th. Each class was assigned table numbers and children made DRESSING THE PART - The goal of Red Ribbon Week focuses our scholars on an new friends during lunch while Mrs. Domanick and Mrs. Partridge sang and danced anti drug campaign as we teach them how to make healthy choices. Students chose through the cafeteria. Everyone was happy and enjoyed meeting new peers! Thank you a theme for each day, including “Be JEANius” and “Be Drug Free or Team Up Against to our two teachers who organized this day and made lunchtime fun time! Drugs,” and supported their theme by dressing the part. Our Physical Education teachers had students sign a pledge to stand together against drugs.

Earning Eagle Honors

Michael Lawrence Grey successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on September 28th, officially making him the 69th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Michael’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, December 17th, starting at 10 a.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point

Road in East Islip. Michael is currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Michael has served Troop 205 as Troop Guide, Assistant Patrol Leader, and Den Chief with Pack 205.

Michael has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending and participating in National Boy Scout Jamboree in 2013 at the Bechtel Summit High Adventure Base in West Virginia, was a summer camper for three seasons at Camp Wakpominee in the Adirondack Mountains, Ft. Ann, NY, and was a weekend camper for many Troop 205 campouts on and off Long Island, New York. Michael was also elected by his fellow Scouts and is a member of the Order of the Arrow – Scouting’s honorary camping society. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service

project for the community. Michael has actually earned a total of 26 merit badges. The Service Project that Michael developed, planned, and constructed with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Great River, NY – demolishing existing cement steps and installing a handicapped-accessible concrete ramp for entry into the Church with railings on both sides, along with refurbishing and rebuilding three benches on the Church grounds. As Michael reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Achieving the Eagle Scout Rank will help me in successfully being admitted to the college of my choice.” Michael went on to say, “I’d like to follow my interest in the US Military, preferably

the US Army – by first attending some form of military school like the Virginia Military Institute.” Michael is a Junior at St. Dominics High School, where he received Second Honors in 2015 and has been awarded an Academic Scholarship. Michael has been the St. Dominics Chess Club Coordinator this academic year and has been on his High School Football and Junior Varsity Soccer teams. He has played sports out of school on the East Islip Power Soccer Intertown Team from 2011 through this year, where he has also served as Game Captain. Providing community service has been part of Michael’s life – not only within Troop 205 Eagle Scout Service Projects that he has actively participated, but also a “Just for Kicks” volunteer – with the East Islip Soccer

Program for Youngsters with Developmental Needs from 2014 through this year. In 2014, Michael was granted the James Picken Award for excellence in volunteer service while at Grace Day School. Michael was also an honors student while at Grace Day School in 2013 and 2014 and a member of the National Junior Honor Society while a student at St. Peters by the Sea, Bay Shore, in 2012. Michael is the son of Lawrence Grey and Dr. Kathleen Frost of East Islip, and siblings to Brother Stephen, Sister Elizabeth Kiviat, Brotherin-Law Nick Kiviat, and newborn Nephew Benjamin Lawrence Kiviat. Michael’s Father, Larry, is an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 205 and coActivity of the Troop’s successful summer camp program for many years.

will both prepare for the concerts with Dr. Rich Harris Jr., the choral director at Islip High School. “These young ladies are extraordinary musicians,” said Vincent Green, Islip’s director of fine and performing arts. “We could not be prouder of them and we know they will be terrific ambassadors for Islip at the NYSSMA Conference.”

Healthy Habits That Can Have a Lasting Impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives:

Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time. Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.
