Operation Xmas Child

he 6th grade girls of Junior Troop 1165 of Islip participated in Operation Christmas Child at St. Mary’s Church in East Islip. The girls packed 25 shoe size boxes with school supplies, toys and toiletries that will be shipped to children in need all around the world. They are helping Suffolk County reach their goal of 18 million boxes. Thanks to all for their hard work and dedication for this great cause. Great way to kick off the Holiday Season!

Look for bubbles in standing water, a white cloudy mist or blowing dust, which indicates that an underground gas line may have ruptured; or, listen for a hissing, roaring or whistling sound. If you smell, see or hear any of those indications, leave the area immediately, then call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045. Be smart and be safe. Getting ready, for a girl, is a complicated affair. Rare is the female who can simply roll out of bed, jump in and out of the shower in 5 minutes, throw on the first outfit she pulls out of the closet, skip the makeup and extensive hair prep – and just go. I admire those who can, really, I do. Imagine how many hours, days, weeks even, that are saved over the course of just one year – time that could be spent out and about, actually living. But no, most of us have a whole routine, one that,

if anything, becomes lengthier and more complex the bigger the occasion. Like a weekday wedding, for instance. Forget attempting to go into work, leave a little early and freshen up at home on the fly. No, I need to take the entire day off, allotting at least a good five/six hours to the beautification process. Crazy? Perhaps. But who wants to rush? It’s nice to have some time to kick back and relax, allow plenty of time for hair mishaps, smudged makeup, chipped nail polish, runs in your pantyhose, traffic… all

the wonderful nuisances that only seem to happen when you have somewhere important to go. Of course, in the end, people rarely notice all the effort. Everything falls into place, all is well and the time and effort… well, you probably could have cut it in half and come out looking much the same. But such is the life of a girl. We’re wired differently. Think how many business industries thrive on our collective neuroses. You’re welcome. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to start getting ready.

Nissequogue River State Park was damaged. Eager to have the pole and platform restored before next year’s nesting season, the Parks Department recently contacted PSEG Long Island for assistance. “NYS Parks mission is to balance patrons’ recreational activities with the protection of our natural resources. Replacing the damaged pole and platform does both of those beautifully,” said Wayne R. Horsley, Regional Director, Long Island State Park Region. “Ospreys are a favorite among park patrons and the project will provide another nest site for the NY State ‘Species of Concern.’ Parks appreciates the willingness of PSEG Long Island to restoring a nesting platform to NRSP.” The replacement of the damaged pole and platform provides a safe nesting area for the osprey away from vital electrical

infrastructure, helping PSEG Long Island maintain strong electric service reliability. Ospreys will often use utility poles and transmission structures for nesting, which jeopardizes system reliability, causes outages and damages equipment. Such nesting also puts the birds in danger of electrocution, as their large wingspan can complete the circuit between closely spaced energized equipment or between an energized wire and a neutral ground wire. Long Island is home to many species of birds, including the majestic osprey. Ospreys are large, beautiful birds and a popular sight on Long Island. From the 1950s through the 1970s, Long Island’s osprey population decreased and became endangered. The effort to build safe nesting sites on or near waterways has contributed to the rise in the population of osprey.

Over the course of the project, participants in the Sheriff’s Youth Tier Initiative received both classroom and hands on instruction in the art of mural painting. Larsen, a lecturer at the Parsons New School in New York City, worked with the incarcerated youth several days a week to produce the massive eighty-five foot mural in the jail’s main corridor. depicts soothing scenes of nature and water, as well as a bridge which is meant to evoke a sense of passage to brighter times. More than 15 male youth worked on the project. A second phase, which will begin in the coming months, will include young incarcerated women. The unveiling was attended by Splashes of Hope’s Director of Operations and Muralist, Diana Fogarty, the artist, Kirk Larsen, Theresa Santmann, the project’s sponsor, several of the incarcerated youth who worked on the projects, and members of Sheriff DeMarco’s staff. Sheriff DeMarco praised the organization and thanked everyone at Splashes of Hope for their continued support, “I am touched by Ms. Santmann’s generosity and I thank everyone at Splashes of Hope for

making this project a success. It undoubtedly left an impression on the youth who participated by imparting some confidence and helping them to realize their talents. It also brightened up the hallway for our staff, and presents a positive image for all of the inmates who come through the facility.”

The Riverhead Correctional Facility held a special unveiling ceremony yesterday for its new “Splashes of Hope” mural inside the jail, which was painted by incarcerated youth under the guidance of master muralist, Kirk Larsen. The project was funded and sponsored by “Splashes of Hope,” a Huntington-based nonprofit organization, and made possible through the generous donation of Theresa Santmann of Babylon. Gala Event A Success On October 27th, the Mondays at Racine Executive Committee hosted its second annual Gala Event at Obession Catering Hall in Lindenhurst. Honorees Carmen DePasquale and Joseph Mastalia of DePasquale Salon Systems were in attendace along with representivives from four different local health care systems as well as elected officials. Carmen Depasquale and Joseph Mastalia were given Esteem Mentorship Awards for their tireless efforts in helping the Mondays at Racine Program grow and come closer to the mission of changing the face of cancer using the skills of the beauty industry. North Shore LIJ Health Care Systems, which has been a supporting entity for the Mondays at Racine Program for well over a year, showed their support by having Dr. Raptis, Dr. Muratori, Dr, Schwartz, Dr, McKenna and Dr. Ames attend the gala event. Dr. James Harris, a “Top Doctor” as recognized by U. S News and World Report, along with support staff, represented Catholic Healthcare Systems through Good Samaritan Hospital. This year, the Islip High School Catapult Team, with their pumpkin flinging machine, JackO-Splatter, placed twice in competitions held at Last Fling Pumpkin Fling at Pocono Raceway and the annual Long Island Pumpkin Flinging Championship. The Last Fling tasked competitors with creating a machine capable of chucking a two to four pound pumpkin as far as possible without the use of an engine. Both youth and adult teams compete for prizes including a grand champion trophy. Returning to the competition for the third

year, Islip placed second in the event. At the Long Island Championship, which is the 12th year Islip has participated, each team is allowed three throws that are for measured distance provided by a local survey/engineering company that coordinates with GPS laser equipment. Whichever team chucks their pumpkin the farthest in those three throws wins. Teamwork and perseverance paid off as Islip High School battled their way to first place at the Long Island Championship with a throw measuring 916.7 feet coming a bit short

of their record throw of 1,049,9 feet and launching their pumpkin at 145mph. The purpose of the competitions is to bring science, technology, engineering and math skills to life while also promoting teamwork. The team consists of Juniors: Ryan Maziarz, Steven Walis, Justin Feller, Alex Petry, Sam Meyers, Andrew Ginnegar; Sophomore Robert Phalen; Freshman Kyle Maziarz, Jack Needham, Ben Meyer and Kyle Ness. Their machine was engineered and built by team members mostly with donations from local businesses.

Halloween Bash

On October 24th, the Brook Avenue School PFA held its annual Halloween Bash, raising over $1,000. This year’s fun included guessing jars and a pumpkin carving contest. Delicious donated baked goods were available for purchase and there were many raffles prizes given. The pumpkin carving creativity was amazing and the contest winner was

given a gift card. The Brook Avenue PFA thanks all those who helped make this year’s Bash a great success, especially the Brook Avenue Faculty and their families. They would also like to thank Kenny, Brook Avenue’s night custodian, and his staff for assisting in set up and clean up - we know the Bash can get a bit messy! Special thanks to BAS

Two of the region’s most recognized authorities on childhood development are being brought together at a free seminar to help parents of young children assess and track their children’s intellectual growth and development. The session, offered on Thursday, November 13th at Holy Family Regional School in Commack, will feature Dr. Abigail Jewkes and Dr. Michael Sampson, both of St. John’s University. Attendees will be given tools, and the knowledge to use them at home during at the event. Dr. Abigail Jewkes is an Associate Professor of Early Childhood Education at St. John’s University in New York City. As an author of The Ounce Scale, an observational assessment for infants’ and toddlers’ growth, accomplishments, areas of difficulty, and

temperament, Dr. Jewkes is uniquely qualified to coach parents on developmental stages. In her presentation; ‘Simple Ways to Support Your Child’s Development’, Dr. Jewkes will share her extensive experience training early childhood educators in observationbased assessment. Dr. Michael Sampson is the Dean of the School of Education at St. John’s University and a prolific author. Dr. Sampson is a New York Times best selling co-author of 22 books for young children, including Chicka, Chicka, 1, 2, 3 and The Bill Martin Jr. Big Book of Poetry. Dr. Sampson has written university textbooks, been published in leading peerreviewed journals, and developed curriculum materials. He currently serves on the editorial board of The Journal of

Teacher Education. His books on emergent literacy (The Pursuit of Literacy) and on literacy acquisition (Total Literacy: Reading, Writing, and Learning) make Dr. Sampson the ideal speaker to share his expertise in early literacy with parents. The session will begin at 7 p.m. and will last approximately two hours. It is offered free of charge and is open to all interested parents. During their recognition of Red Ribbon Week, Islip Middle School welcomed Rohan Murphy, an East Islip native, entrepreneur, inspirational athlete, motivational speaker and double leg amputee, to speak with the entire student body. Born with a congenital deformity of both legs, Murphy underwent a double amputation at age 4. During his visit, he told his story of courage, dedication, determination and overcoming adversity. He shared how a middle school physical education teacher changed his life forever by introducing him

to the sport of wrestling. “We brought in guest speaker Rohan Murphy to cover the areas of making positive choices as it applies to kindness and compassion, as well as peer pressure for drugs,” Social Worker Shari Pennington said. “We want our students to understand that their choices can determine if they are successful in their lives.” During his presentation, Murphy demonstrated a few of his wrestling moves, encouraged the students to chase their dreams and spoke about his life motto: no excuses. “Every single day in

this world, ordinary people accomplish extraordinary things,” Murphy said. “That’s what I wanted for myself. I wanted to do something remarkable, amazing and extraordinary.” Sponsored by the National Family Partnership, Red Ribbon Week serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.
