Curriculum Mapping
O
n October 27th, teachers at the third and fourth grade levels at Gardiner Manor School took part in curriculum mapping. This allows the teachers across the entire grade level to work together to create lessons on particular topics. At this session, third grade teachers mapped out lessons on opinion/argument writing while fourth grade teachers worked on a personal narrative unit. This was the second in a series of meetings for those interested in learning about issues impacting school districts, BOCES, and how to advocate for positive change. Mr. Lupo informed BOCES employees, parents, students, and community members about the workings of the Suffolk County Comptroller’s Office and how it is
charged with auditing county departments and nonprofit agencies funded by the county. The Community Legislative Committee meetings are facilitated by ESBOCES Board Vice President William K. Miller. He said, “It’s inspiring to see adults and students interested in working together to benefit our community.”
North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center will hold its annual Dancing with Our Stars Gala on Friday, November 11th at the Garden City Hotel in Garden City. Marathon a Success
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced that more than 3,000 runners from 26 states, the District of Columbia and six countries participated in the Catholic Health Services’ 2nd Annual Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon to Support Our Veterans. All net proceeds generated from the event will go directly to veteran service organizations in Suffolk County. The male and female winner of the full marathon were: Mark Maggi, Cohasset, MA – 2:48:08.43; Pam O’Sullivan, Nashua, NH – 2:58:45.93 The male and female winner of the half marathon were: Ben Jacobs, Minnetonka, MN – 1:12:37.32; Leonora Petrina, Bayport, NY – 1:17:23.28 The male and female winner of the 5k: Peter Argerakis, Blue Point, NY – 17:40.10; Mckenna Mazeski, Aurora, CO –

I’d like to thank all those who made the race and Taste of Long Island Festival a huge success, including our sponsors, vendors, emergency services personnel, local businesses, community leaders, runners, volunteers and so many more.” The marathon route took runners along Suffolk County’s south shore, starting and ending on Montauk Highway in downtown Patchogue, and took runners through Blue Point, Bayport, downtown Sayville, Oakdale – including the former St. John’s University campus (now Amity Education Group) and past the historic Bourne Mansion, New York State’s Heckscher State Park and Bayard Cutting Arboretum. “We want to continue
to make this event a destination marathon while highlighting our downtowns and our wonderful assets along the south shore,” added County Executive Bellone. “In addition to reversing the course, we worked with our local chambers of commerce and local business leaders to organize various events in order to enhance the experience for our spectators and visitors.” The 2016 Suffolk County Marathon was the third marathon County Executive Bellone ran, previously running in the 2014 New York City Marathon and 2015 Suffolk County Marathon. The County Executive’s participation was inspired by his commitment to live a healthier lifestyle, which includes a 69 pound weight loss since 2013. The FreedomFest: Taste of Long Island Festival was also held in down Patchogue park
in conjunction with the marathon, half marathon and 5k race to highlight the region’s local businesses, such as local craft breweries, award winning wines, and local eateries and produce. The Taste of Long Island Festival was made possible with the support and partnership of New York State, the Village of Patchogue, the Long Island Wine Council, the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce and the nonprofit veterans’ organization Project9Line. In addition, through the efforts of Jayson Velez of the Jay Scott Band and Patrick Donohue, founder of Project9Line, more than 20 local bands and musicians performed throughout the event across three stages. The Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon additionally is part of the 2016 Suffolk County Veterans Running
Series, a series of local races throughout the County that will raise additional funds for veterans causes. The previous races included the Annual Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer “I DID THE GRID” Run/ Walk, Navy SEAL Michael Murphy 4-Mile Run Around the Lake, Oakdale Chamber of Commerce Firecracker 5, Airbone Tri Team 5k and the Cow Harbor Warriors Captain Joseph J. Boccia Jr. USMC 4-Mile Warrior Run. The last two races of the series will be the Veterans Day 4K Cross Country Race in Northport on November 5th and the Annual Long Island Run for the Warriors in Lindenhurst on November 12th. November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.
The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until
then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this. 321939N1109

Want to help your neighbors and your community? The Auxiliary Police Officer training program and the Civilian Police Academy are both open to adult Suffolk County residents. The Suffolk County Auxiliary Police Officer training program is available to residents of Suffolk County at least 21 years of age. The Auxiliary Police are volunteers who provide support to the Suffolk County Police Department and serve as the “eyes and ears” of the department while patrolling. Candidates must dedicate 10 hours of service each month. 120 hours of training will be provided free of charge. Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or part-time in a horticulture program. In 2017, the Society will offer two scholarships of $1,000 each. Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horiculture on Long Island by helping to further the education of committed students planning a career in the field. Creative Cups Calendar A colorful 2017 monthly wall calendar is available from the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline, featuring selected works from their popular Creative Cups event. Each page shows a Creative Cup - an ordinary bra that has been transformed into a work of art by people throughout the U.S. I n March, for example, gorgeous green, blue and purple feathers create “Proud as a Peacock,” by Gail Massaro of Bayville; golfers will enjoy May’s “Protect the Tee Tees,” created by Christina Capetola of Garden City which is embellished with pink and white tees, turf and golf balls; and, marking Independence Day in July there is Cathy Hill of Douglaston’s red, white and blue “Miss Liberty.” “It was difficult to select just these 12 out of the 136 that will be auctioned on March 16th,” says Dale Flashner, the Adelphi graphic design professor who is the co-founder of Creative Cups. “Each time we do this, I continue to be amazed at the variety of what we receive and the skill with which they are made.” The calendar sells for $20 and all profits support the work of the Adelphi breast cancer program, which provides information and emotional support to breast cancer patients throughout New York State and their families. FIRE DEPT OPEN HOUSE - Congressman Pete King attended the Central Islip Fire Department’s recent Open House focused on fire safety which included displays of fire apparatus and equipment, live demonstrations and distribution of education materials. The Congressman talked with many of the firefighters and thanked them for their service, along with MTA police officers who also attended. Rep. King called the event “a terrific evening hosted by a great fire department.”

Exciting Opportunity High school honor students across Long Island who choose to become physical therapists, occupational therapists, or physician assistants can get a head start on their college careers through a new Integrated Honors Track at Touro College School of Health Sciences (SHS) in Bay Shore. The program was created for those seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in the sciences and a commitment to pursuing an education in the PT, OT, or PA professions. “The Integrated Honors track is a fantastic opportunity for highachieving students to progress seamlessly into their chosen future,” said Art Sullivan, Interim Coordinator of the
Integrated Health Sciences Honors Track and Assistant Chair for Undergraduate Studies. Healthcare professions continue to be among the most desirable careers in the U.S. In a 2016 U.S. News survey on The Best Healthcare Jobs, Physician Assistant ranked #4 with a median salary of $95,820; Physical Therapist ranked #12 with a median salary of $82,390; and Occupational Therapist ranked #17 with a median salary of $78,810. In recent years, Touro’s pass rates for graduates in those departments have ranged from 90-100 percent. Dr. Louis Primavera, Dean for the SHS, noted the Integrated Honors Track helps young students secure their place in very prestigious healthcare
programs. “We are able to provide these students with a pathway to their future careers, and to these professions- a select group of talented candidates.” Applications are available in high school guidance offices throughout Suffolk and Eastern Nassau counties, and through college recruiters. Touro’s admissions officers will review applications beginning in November. Artwork Selected The Long Island Arts Council has selected artwork by East Islip High School senior Taylor Kozak to be featured in the upcoming year’s LIAC calendar. Kozak, the president of the school’s Photography Club, studied photography with teacher Heather Toomey during her sophomore and junior year,
and is currently enrolled in Daniel Figliozzi’s Advanced Placement 2D design class. “When I first heard about the contest, I immediately let Taylor know about it because I remember her making a beautiful and powerful double exposure print about her brother last year,” said Toomey. “I am so proud that she has been chosen as a featured artist
for the LIAC calendar. It is well deserved, as she is a dedicated student and works extremely hard.” “It was such an honor to be chosen,” said Kozak. “I would like to thank my wonderful teacher, Heather Toomey, and my parents for pushing me to be the best I could be.”

Pumpkin Paradise Pumpkin paradise came to East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School on October 27th, with each class getting a chance to visit a pumpkin patch room featuring autumnal
and Halloween-themed decorations, where the students could select a pumpkin provided by the school’s PTA. “The children enjoyed picking their own personal
pumpkins from the patch, and proudly held them up to show me the perfect pumpkins they had selected,” said Principal Danielle Flaumenhaft.
Hitting 100% Teacher Jennifer Esposito’s third-period sixth-grade ELA class were the winners of East Islip Middle School librarian Valerie Ware-Comneck’s recent contest supporting
Library Card Sign-up Month. The class achieved a spectacular 100 percent library card sign-up rate in the annual event, which encourages students and families to obtain library

Redmen Honored The Great American Rivalry series honored two East Islip High School varsity football players – Doug Carpluk and Walter Westhoff – for athletic and academic excellence at an October 15th home contest against rival Sayville. The two students were recognized in a special ceremony prior to the kickoff of the game, which was supported by the U.S. Marine Corps. Carpluk, a kicker and first-year varsity player, is three for three this season
on field goal attempts and 20 for 21 on extra point attempts. He has a weighted GPA of 105.8 and plans to pursue a degree in chemical and mechanical engineering at Ohio State University, University of Alabama or University of Pittsburgh. Westhoff, a three-year varsity player, has started every game this year at left tackle. He has a weighted GPA of 105.9 and will attend Hamilton College in upstate Clinton next fall, where he plans to major in
economics. “These students excel both on the field and in the classroom, and we are proud of their recognition by Great American Rivalry,” said Athletic Director Stephen Restivo. Showcasing top high school football rivalries across the nation, the Great American Rivalry Series was created 12 years ago to celebrate the central cultural role of high school football for American families and communities.

Spookfest
A great time was had by all thanks to our PFA moms, who spent the afternoon decorating and preparing a spooky night for our awesome students! Spookfest brought out
all the witches, superheros and princesses to walk the haunted hallway and practice their screechy screams! Gardiner Manor scholars were entertained by
East Islip held an ENL Parent Night on October 18th in the Early Childhood Center building, offering an opportunity for the school district’s English as a new language teachers, parents and students to explore the programs available for English language learners. The ENL teachers provided a presentation to the parents in English and Spanish to improve
communication with East Islip’s ENL population, while parents were able to speak with the teachers about their particular child’s academics and progress. “This was a wonderful evening where our diverse cultures fused together to support our ENL students and their families” said Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of
HALLOWEEN SURPRISE - The students at Gardiner Manor School had a Halloween surprise! All of the students were led outside onto the lawn to see the Northwell Health Halloween float. The visitors shared healthy Halloween tips, like not eating all of the Dennison D’Natale, danced candy in one day and donating some candy to service members overseas. YOUTH AWARDS - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended an awards presentation ceremony for the Connetquot Youth Association. The awards focused on the Association’s Little League, and were presented to players, coaches, and other volunteers who made a difference in the league during the 2016 seasons. Councilman Flotteron thanked the players for their sportsmanship, and thanked the parents and adult volunteers for promoting Little League traditions.
As part of the Class of 1966’s 50th Class Reunion in June 2016, returning alumni helped to raise money to give back to future Bay Shore graduates. Each year, the Bay Shore High School Alumni Association encourages
graduating students to stay involved in the community and to help others when they can. Part of giving back has included generous donations to the Association’s scholarship fund, which allowed the awarding of 12 scholarships to the Class of 2016.

SEPTA FAIR A SUCCESS - With Halloween right around the corner, the Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) helped families get into the holiday spirit at its first-ever Fall Festival. Kids and parents painted pumpkins, had their faces painted, played ring toss and decorated cupcakes while enjoying pizza and hot dogs. Attendees of all ages put on their Halloween costumes and had a blast taking pictures in the photo booth.

dream of playing in the NBA but lost it all to substance abuse. After struggling for many years to overcome addictions to alcohol, cocaine, oxycontin and heroin, Herren has been alcohol and drug-free since 2008. He now shares his story with audiences in
the hope of reaching just one person and making a difference in his or her life. Many of the students who attended the presentation were touched by Herren’s story and were grateful to him for sharing lessons he has learned in his life.
EXPLORING THEMES - Students in Mr. Cummiskey’s class at Bay Shore High School recently spent time reading and discussing the Arthur Miller classic The Crucible. The play, which is set during the time of the Salem Witch Trials, explores many themes that transcend the ages, including fear, hysteria, reputation and pride.
The Bay Shore Middle School Mentor and Mentee Program held its first meeting just in time to decorate pumpkins for Halloween! FINDING FACTORS - Do you know whether 7 is a factor of 56? Using math The program pairs manipulatives, students in Mrs. Olsen and Mrs. Carino’s class at South Country School teachers and students into learned how to answer the question.
