Evolving Over Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan First it was small groups of college Journalism students at my alma mater, then it progressed to high school newspaper staffs at an awards ceremony… and now add an elementary school newspaper club to my public speaking repertoire. Who would have thought? There was a time when the mere mention of the dreaded words, “oral presentation,” would strike a chord of fear deep within. As soon as the syllabus for the year was handed out back in high school and college, the anxiety began. What would I say? Would I use note cards and attempt to ad lib? Should I write out each word and read from it, never daring to glance up or make

eye contact with my audience? What if I just “winged” it, as they say, and worked it all out on the spot? Well, with rare exception, I can pretty much assure you that two of the three options NEVER happened. Rather, I was a big fan of: write it out, rehearse it to the point of practically memorizing every line anyway, but don’t dare stray from the script – after all, you might mess it up, miss a word, lose your place, whatever… and we couldn’t have that! What captivating presentations they must have been. Fast forward to the present day when, by virtue of my career, I have been afforded several opportunities to speak to those up-and-coming students in the field, ranging from the age of 8 to … whatever age it is college

students are these days. Me. Of all people. They must assume I can intelligently speak on things of a journalistic nature, having been employed in this area for the better part of the last nine years. And so, in the interest of evolving to meet these expectations, I have tentatively taken on these speaking engagements, preparing for each in my own unique way – and hoping, fingers crossed, that I can make an adequate impression. So far, so good. Practice does – eventually – make perfect. I will never possess the natural gift that others do; however, I no longer cringe at the prospect of an audience either. I suppose it’s fortunate that the majority of my job can be conducted via the written word.

The American Red Cross has awarded a $500,000 grant to FEGS Health and Human Services to support mental health and education services for children affected by Superstorm Sandy on Long Island. The funding will be used to help an estimated 150 children in Nassau and Suffolk counties who lost part of their academic school year due to stormrelated challenges, such as housing displacement and/or trauma caused by the storm. “FEGS is enormously appreciative of the support of the American Red Cross,” said Gail A. Magaliff, CEO of FEGS. “Children who are still struggling across Long Island will now receive academic tutoring and trauma counseling from FEGS and its partners. These funds will help us address the long-

term impact of Sandy on children which can potentially be even more damaging than the physical effects.” During and after times of disaster, the Red Cross knows that emotional support is a major element in recovery. The widespread devastation of property by Sandy left immediate and lasting emotional needs for adults and children affected by the storm. John Miller, CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island, said: “Children were affected by Superstorm Sandy in ways that people often overlook, and this grant will help support the youth of Long Island in their recovery.” Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received $308

million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of September 30, the Red Cross has spent or committed $280 million – more than 90 percent of the donated funds. Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey a year after the storm. The Red Cross has also partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to support the recovery of individuals and families affected by Sandy. These partners include Brooklyn Community Foundation, City Harvest, Community Development Corporation of Long Island, Feeding America, Food Bank For New York City, Friends of Rockaway, Health and Welfare Council of Long Island,

Island Harvest, Jewish Community Council of Rockaway Peninsula, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, National Baptist Convention USA, National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters, New York Disaster Interfaith Services, Operation Hope, Points of Light Foundation, Salvation Army, Save the Children, Staten Island Alliance, Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, The Staten Island Foundation, United Way of Long Island and Visiting Nurse Service of New York on Sandy recovery efforts in the areas of housing assistance, case management, mental health services, volunteer coordination, and food security. Pairs Of Tickets To The NY Skyride Virtual Tour At The Empire State Building

During the Olympics, have you ever wondered what that funny sport with the eight identical giants in spandex rowing a boat in sync was? Crew, or rowing, is an elitist sport that is gaining popularity due to both its difficulty and its beauty. Around since 1430 BC, Crew is one of the world’s oldest sports. Originating as a punishment for prisoners and as the alternative to a sail, rowers were forced to row for hours on end. Today, Crew is no longer revered for the practicality of transportation, but for the intricacy of technique and the adrenaline of competition. The sport of rowing consists of a crew of oarsmen and, in some cases, a coxswain. The rowers, who are arranged in boats dubbed Shells, can either be solo or in groups

of 2, 4 or 8. I am on a boat consisting of eight, who have been rowing together for St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip for three years, with friendship being a crucial factor to success. This past weekend, my boat competed at the Long Island Championships, held in Oyster Bay. Larger boats are allotted a coxswain, whose job is quite complex. This lightweight coxswain must steer the boat, as well as motivate his crew and ultimately win the race. He is truly the core of a firstclass boat. Rowers either scull or sweep, with the former using two smaller oars, one in each hand. A sweep rower is almost always in a larger boat, with the exception being a pair. A sweep rower has one oar and must maintain balance, while still ensuring textbook

technique and absolute power. As a rower, I can truly appreciate the physical strength and endurance that an athlete partaking in this sport must command. Most rowers train both on a rowing machine and on the water 5-7 days a week and are extremely dedicated to the pursuit of a gold medal. FIRE SAFETY MONTH - October is Fire Safety month and the students at Mary G. Clarkson are learning what steps to take if ever they are faced with a fire emergency. During Physical Education classes with teachers Regina Ochwat, Christine Arias and Jaclyn Pasquerella, students are moving through a circuit of various scenarios sometimes encountered during a fire emergency, including smoke crawls, mock 911 calls and “stop, drop and roll.” This approach allows students to prepare both body and mind for spontaneous muscle memory recall, if ever the need arose. Legislator Tom Cilmi spent Saturday and Sunday of Columbus Day weekend at the 31st Annual East Islip Soccer Club “Fall Classic” Tournament. Cilmi is a past president of the Club and remains involved. He said, “With more than 220 teams participating this year, the Tournament was once again a huge success thanks, in large part, to the dozens of volunteers that construct

over twenty fields at Heckscher State Park just for this weekend, and tear them all down again Sunday night. It’s truly a herculean effort. Special thanks go to this year’s Tournament Directors, Ron Novotny and Jack Sharpe, for putting the many pieces together, from marketing, to preparation of fields, to registration and scheduling, managing referees, maintaining

standings, presenting trophies, and finally, breakdown at the end of the weekend. On October 12th, Alan Goldman, CSA, visited Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc.’s Bay Shore location, where he presented “A Drive Through The Ages,” a seminar on safe driving for senior citizens. More than 20 people were in attendance. In his seminar, Mr. Goldman, a New York State-certified driving instructor and an advocate

for the senior citizen community, explained the misconceptions of older drivers, what they can do to keep their driver’s privileges and how to begin conversations with their family members about when they should no longer be behind the wheel. The seminar ended with a question-andanswer session. According to the Census Bureau, the number of

Rocketry

Bringing their study of the history of rocketry, the Space Race and Newton’s three laws of motion into focus, as well as discovering how rockets actually work, students in East Islip Middle School technology teacher Harold Kench’s seventh- and eighth-grade classes conducted an exciting series of rocket launches on October 17th at the school’s athletic field. The seventh-graders launched rockets made of soda bottles, reaching approximately 100 feet in altitude, while the eighthgraders used solid rocket engines for their launches, ascending to 500 feet. Kench’s popular rocket

course takes approximately 14 class days to complete, beginning with the very first rocket scientists, the ancient Chinese, and moving forward through the Space Race, the anatomy of a rocket, the difference between solid and liquid-fueled rockets, and biographies of rocket pioneers such as Robert Goddard, considered the father of modern rocketry. “The rocket activity is the perfect multicurriculum lesson,” said Kench. “By the end of the unit, my students will have utilized their skills from many subject areas.” The project draws in everything from English language arts

(reading directions and vocabulary) and physics (Newton’s laws of motion) to math (measurement) and technology (the safe construction of the rocket). There’s even some physical education involved, with the students chasing down each rocket after it is launched and drifts back down. “This project is a real crowd-pleaser year after year,” Kench added. “I’m not sure who enjoys it more, the students or the teachers.”

Employees from Kohl’s Associates In Action program recently partnered with Keep Islip Clean for a volunteer project at Islip Beach. Kohl’s Associates regularly volunteer with local organizations and they chose to work through KIC for a fall beautification of the beach entranceway, which caps off the extensive Town of Islip renovation in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. Joining Kohl’s

Associates, who weeded, spread compost and planted bushes and annuals, were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints based in Bay Shore and volunteers from the community. The volunteer team was led by KIC Commissioner Kay Erwood, with help from Debora Knutsen. Their extensive gardening knowledge was key to this successful project. Lisa Sotelo led the Kohl’s team and Elder Wilkinson

captained his church group. The Town of Islip supported the endeavor by providing all plants. “This public-private partnership between corporate employees, church members and KIC volunteers shows how much is accomplished when different members of a community work together for the good of all,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran.

Keeping Islip Clean

East Islip High School held a special ceremony on September 30th, dedicating a cherry tree and plaque in the school’s courtyard in memory of Kimberly Coffey, an East Islip senior who died of a rare form of meningitis on June 15th, 2012, a week before her graduation. She had planned to attend the Molloy College of Nursing in Rockville Centre, and a memorial scholarship has been created by Coffey’s family for East Islip High

School seniors intending to pursue a career in nursing. “We gathered this morning to dedicate this beautiful tree and plaque in the memory of Kimberly Coffey, a beloved young lady who was taken from us much too soon,” said Principal William Brennen in his dedication speech. “Although this dedication is taking place because of a tragic event, today is a celebration – a celebration of a beautiful life and a

Last year, 3rd grade students from all over Long Island, including Bay Shore, visited the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium in Centerport. Mrs. Vernola, the museum’s Educational Program Director, invited every student who came to write a letter to the staff of the museum describing their favorite part of the trip and to participate in a contest to name the Planetarium’s newest show. Out of the hundreds of students that visited the Planetarium and wrote letters afterwards, eight Long Island students’ letters were chosen as contest winners. Four of those eight were Bay Shore students, all from Gardiner Manor School. First place winner Oliver Schellenberg’s entry, “Take a Wild Ride Though the Solar

System,” is now the name of one of the Planetarium’s new educational programs. Three other GMS students, Tabitha Rivera, Lauren Moran and Jayde Nielsen, had quotes from their letters selected to be reproduced on the back cover of the Planetarium’s brochure. Tabitha wrote, “I learned all about the solar system and the water cycle. We had so much fun. I wish we could go there again.” Lauren wrote, in part, “I learned that Venus smells like rotten eggs and that the sun is a star.” Jayde Nielsen, whose 3rd grade teacher was Mrs. Giresi, wrote in her letter to the Planetarium, “Thank you for the awesome show. My favorite parts were the thunderstorm and the stars, and also the part when I thought that we were moving but we didn’t. I wish I could

see it again, that was the coolest field trip.” At Gardiner Manor School, on October 21st, parents of each of the four student winners proudly watched as their children were honored for their powerful use of writing. During an assembly honoring these students’ achievement, New York State Senator Phil Boyle and Suffolk

Monumental Project

Students in Nancy Kane’s fifth-grade class at Timber Point Elementary recently chose monuments to research and present to the class in a project that was an extension of an English language arts lesson in which the students applied close reading skills to a nonfiction text about the architect Maya Lin. The fifth-graders displayed their information

either on posters or in the form of research papers. They also created models of the monuments by assuming the architect’s role, demonstrating creativity with the variety of materials that were utilized. A Leaning Tower of Pisa replica was made with more than 500 miniature Legos, while models of the Eiffel Tower were constructed

out of silver pipe cleaners and coat hangers. “This experience was exciting for all of us,” said Kane. “I even heard my students saying that they couldn’t wait to come to school to share their projects.”

Catapult Team

Gershow Recycling generously donated materials to the Islip High School catapult team so they could make improvements on their catapult, named the “JackO-Splatter.” Gershow supplied the team with much-needed replacement parts such as a steel rod and metal bearings to help launch the pumpkins further and more accurately.

The team won its division at the Last Fling Pumpkin & Football Sling in Warren County, New Jersey on October 19-20 with a distance of 983 feet. On October 26th, the team placed third at the annual Long Island Championship Pumpkin Fling, which took place at the Suffolk County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank. The team then headed off to the “World Championship

Punkin Chunkin” event on November 1st-3rd in Bridgeville, Delaware. This annual event will be televised on the Science Channel on Thanksgiving evening at 8 p.m. ET. In addition, Gershow generously donated windbreakers and hardhats to the team members. The Islip High School Catapult Team thanked Gershow for its sponsorship and its donation.

World Explorer Contest Tenth- and twelfth-grade students at Brentwood High School today kicked-off the Nat Geo Mundo World Explorer Contest sponsored by Cablevision’s Power To Learn and Nat Geo Mundo. Participating in the event was Assemblyman Philip Ramos. Following opening remarks by Assistant Principal Jeanette Suarez, Cablevision OnAir Talent Devale Ellis discussed the partnership between Cablevision and Nat Geo Mundo. Assemblyman Ramos spoke to the students about the benefits of world travel with regard to learning and enrichment. The Nat Geo Mundo World Explorer Contest is open to all high school students in the Brentwood Union Free School District. One student will be selected to participate in the 2014 National Geographic Student Expedition, which is led by experienced trip hosts and a National Geographic expert and are provided by National Geographic Student Expeditions. Applicants are required to submit a 300-word essay on “what he/she hopes to accomplish through world travel and why they should be selected.” Deadline for submission is January 31st, 2014.

SUPERINTENDENT VISIT - Superintendent Dr. Karen Salmon recently visited Bay Shore Middle School as part of her initiative to bring special attention each month to the staff of one of Bay Shore’s seven schools. Everyone was invited to “dress down” in jeans and wear maroon and white or specific school shirts to express their school spirit. Middle School Principal Dr. LaQuita Outlaw, along with the Middle School faculty and staff, enjoyed their special day with Bay Shore’s new Superintendent.

On October 25th, hundreds of Gardiner Manor students and their families had a scream at the Halloween Dance. If you were lucky enough to be at Gardiner Manor School that night, you were delighted by ghouls, mummies and zombies and dazzled by princesses and ladybugs! Maybe you carefully made your way through the spooky walk with your eyes wide open. An eye-popping ghoul might have welcomed you

to the event before you even had a chance to hear your future told by the eerie fortune teller or the bones clanking as they awaited your arrival. If scary ghosts and ghouls were not your thing, then you were able to dance and sing the Cat Man Joe or enter the hula hoop contest. Gardiner Manor students showed off their amazing costumes, including lots of zombies, Mario from Nintendo, disco girls, doctors, princesses and

police officers. Parents and their children listened to the DJ, took pictures, enjoyed snacks and contemplated the spooky walk. Let’s not forget the contest to guess how much candy was in that jar! On Saturday, October 19th, family and friends of recently deceased Bay Shore High School graduate and former Assistant Security Director Corey Swinson attended a special ceremony at the closing session of the annual Somos el Futuro/We Are The Future Conference at the Islandia Marriott. Conference organizer Assemblyman Phil Ramos presented a posthumous Youth Service Award to Corey’s son Messiah, a 7th

Assemblyman Ramos also announced that he will be introducing a bill in the New York State Legislature to rename the Fifth Avenue bridge that stretches over Sunrise Highway the Corey Swinson Memorial Bridge. He believes the bill will be approved after the legislature reconvenes in January and that there will be a signing ceremony in Albany shortly thereafter. Among the dignitaries

In Suffolk, on Saturday, November 23rd, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Stony Brook University will play host to the newly added Suffolk County location, where volunteers will accept donations in the university parking lot just outside of the Kenneth P. Community Development Grants The American Red Cross has awarded $2.35 million in grants to support long-term recovery services for people affected by Superstorm Sandy on Long Island. The Community Development Corporation of Long Island, LLC, a nonprofit subsidiary of Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI), will receive a $2 million grant. CDCLI will use the funding to support mold remediation for homes flooded by Superstorm Sandy. The organization expects to provide services to 325 households beginning this month and continuing for the next 12 months. “We are grateful to the American Red Cross for their generous commitment, which will enable CDCLI to expand its mold remediation services to assist residents across Long Island who were impacted by Superstorm Sandy,” said Marianne Garvin, President/CEO of Community Development Corporation of Long Island. “Since the storm hit one year ago, many homeowners have experienced the impact of mold due to flooding. Many people do not have the resources to remedy the mold problems on their own. This grant from the Red Cross, supplementing the funding received from the Robin Hood Foundation, will allow us to extend our services to all Sandy-impacted communities on Long Island, and help homeowners obtain professional evaluation and remediation of visible mold from their home. We are proud to be a partner with the Red Cross in this effort to help Long Islanders rebuild their homes

and lives post-Sandy.” The United Way of Long Island will receive a $350,000 grant. The United Way will use the funding to award sub-grants to community organizations in the areas of individual casework, housing assistance, interagency coordination and social service provider support. “Almost one year after Superstorm Sandy upended lives throughout our region, we are proud to build upon our long standing relationship with the Red Cross,” said Theresa Regnante, president & CEO, United Way of Long Island. “The grant from the Red Cross will help Long Islanders move forward. Through a request for proposal (RFP) process we will award sub-grants to community partners. We couldn’t do the work we do without the support of the Red Cross. We are certain that this grant will go far and wide in helping families with urgent needs to put the pieces back together again.” John Miller, CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island, said he was proud of the collaborative efforts of the CDC and United Way in helping Sandy survivors. “The Red Cross is committed to helping all Sandy survivors recover and rebuild, and joining forces with local non-profit community entities like CDC and United Way will increase our ability to help people who need it most.” Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received

$308 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of September 30, the Red Cross has spent or committed $280 million – more than 90 percent of the donated funds. Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey nearly one year after the storm. As of now, the Red Cross has also partnered with and funded numerous community-based organizations to support the recovery of individuals and families affected by Sandy. These partners include Brooklyn Community Foundation, City Harvest, Feeding America, Food Bank For New York City, Friends of Rockaway, Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, Island Harvest, Jewish Community Council of Rockaway Peninsula, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, National Baptist Convention USA, National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters, New York Disaster Interfaith Services, Operation Hope, Points of Light Foundation, Salvation Army, Save the Children, Staten Island Alliance, Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, The Staten Island Foundation, United Way of Long Island and Visiting Nurse Service of New York on Sandy recovery efforts in the areas of housing assistance, case management, mental health services, volunteer coordination, and food security. On October 24th, St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center’s Therapeutic Recreation Department hosted their 20th Annual Haunted House. Staff from all departments dressed up in Haunted Memory

Lane themed costumes to surprise and entertain the residents. Families, residents and staff explored the haunted maze while trying to avoid the snakes, spiders and ghouls. This is an annual tradition which the residents and staff look

forward to every year. It’s the coming together of the staff for the purpose of giving the residents a special day which makes St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center a unique and special place to live.
