Weddings For Warriors The United States Marines Corps and Dream Event Planning announced the launch of the new L.I. Weddings for Warriors program at the Coral House in Baldwin. The program will assist those in the armed services with making special arrangements for displaced couples while a service man or woman is overseas in places like Afghanistan. They will volunteer on Long Island bases, or other military facilities, in preparing weddings and vow renewals. “Unfortunately, because

of deployments, you do not always know when duty will call. Couples may be pulled from one another with little time to plan an entire wedding. We want to thank the brave men and women that fight tirelessly to keep us safe and give them a dream wedding,” said Adam Panetta, Executive Vice President, Dream Event Planning. The Weddings for Warriors project was started in 2009 in Savannah, Georgia by the Savannah Wedding Tourism Council. The event provided

wedding ceremonies and vow renewals to active US Military personnel. According to the Weddings for Warriors website, “The project was conceived as a way of saying a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to active duty military personnel in Savannah and the Low Country,” said Becky Byous, Executive Director for the Project. The Long Island Weddings for Warriors program will closely mirror that of the Savannah, GA program with events being held at the Coral House in Baldwin.

Lumiere Ballet is celebrating its 20th anniversary since its founding in 1994. Featuring award winning students and professional dancers, the Nutcracker performances will be held at the Maguire Theater at SUNY College in Old Westbury, December 20th at 7 p.m. and December 22nd at 2 p.m. Lumiere Ballet’s Nutcracker follows the original Tchaikovsky, Petipa, Ivanov creation which was performed in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1892. The magic of the music, the waltzing snowflakes, and the land of the sweets will give joy and inspiration to children of all ages. Lumière Ballet encompasses a year round professional training program, summer intensive studies, and a performing company which presents fine works from theclassical, romantic, and the Lumiere Ballet’s original repertoire. The company performs throughout Long Islandand New York City. Svetlana Caton - Founder and Artistic CoDirector of Lumière Ballet. Her background and training is from the great heritage of the Russian Ballet. At the age of 12, her participation in the prestigious Concours de Danse in Paris brought a scholarship offer at the school of the Paris Opera as well as an invitation to study with the legendary stars of the Maryinsky Imperial Ballet; Olga Preobrajenska, Liubov Egorova and Mathilda Ksenschinska. She performed professionally in Europe and in the USA and

Venti Petrov worked with Suzanne Farrell (New York City Ballet) and Alexander Vetrov (Bolshoi Ballet). He has performed in over 20 states. Petrov premiered his own original ballets - El Cid(2011) and Dear Nadezhda (2012 and 2014) in Manhattan. He released four CDs for ballet classes with pianistsMichael Zeiger, Ferdy Tumakaka and Olga Merson, twomaster class DVDs with Oksana Maslova, an app, and adocumentary book related to his Tchaikovsky ballet, Dear Nadezhda. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The perfect dress. Is there even such a thing? Perhaps. It’s just that, when pressed for time, the search becomes seemingly more futile by the day. Store after store, scanning the racks for something – anything – that stands out and screams you... I suppose I’m atypical in the sense that I’m part of a rare breed of girl that doesn’t enjoy shopping; that is, not when I need something specific, anyway. Send me on a random shopping spree with all the time in the world, and I have no problem dropping several hundred dollars in a matter of hours. But give me an occasion, a short window of time to find something appropriate and,

well, let’s just say that window closes most of the way before I can motivate myself to venture out. Couple that with my deep aversion to being forced to navigate an entire mall, that endless, sprawling layout of department stores and dress shops, and my options become increasingly limited. More often than not, I find myself on the complete opposite side from where I need to be, standing in front of one of the gigantic maps, vainly trying to ascertain the quickest route to my destination. Once in the store, there’s the matter of locating which floor the department you’re seeking is on, which, oddly enough, some employees don’t even seem to have a handle on. So

after riding the escalator up and down and making the rounds of each level, I can then get down to the purpose of my mission – actually pinpointing something I like, finding it in my size and then, assuming steps 1 & 2 go as planned, crossing my fingers that said “perfect” dress is somewhat affordable. Sound simple? Let’s just say my last dress shopping mission, which I began precisely two weeks before the date I needed it, has so far encompassed two different malls, several department stores and random dress shops and resulted in my purchasing two different selections, neither of which I am completely sold on. No More Victims Islip Drug Education Awareness (I.D.E.A.) Compass Coalition and Islip High School teamed up to sponsor an antibullying and violence prevention program at entitled “One Voice Can Create Change” that included a performance of All Access Productions’, “No More Victims.” “No More Victims” follows the day in the life of four high school students, giving the audience a glimpse into

their public persona and private struggles. The musical’s purpose is to give a voice to the silent victim, challenging the audience to do the same while providing opportunities to stand, speak and defend themselves and others. Following the conclusions of the production, cast members provided a workshop for, and spent time with, the students where they allowed everyone to speak openly about their social

experiences in a positive climate. In addition to the daytime performances for the high school students, there was also an evening performance for parents and community members. The third and fourth graders at Saint Patrick’s School in Bay Shore generously donated gently used shows to school aged children in Kenya. The hundreds of shoes that were collected will be sent

to Kenya later this month. Pictured are some of the fourth grade students with the shoes they donated. The students at Saint Patrick School collect donations throughout the school year such as warm

clothes in the winter, baby food for families and many other generous gifts. This is just the beginning of many acts of kindness they have planned for this year.

During the week of October 14th, Bay Shore High School celebrated Red Ribbon Week, commemorating the sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers while fighting to keep children safe in the battle against illegal drugs. The Students Against

Destructive Decisions (SADD) club organized events throughout the week to inform students about the dangers of drug and alcohol use. On Tuesday, SADD distributed red ribbons to the entire school and, on Thursday, a club fair encouraged students to be a part of something positive in school. On Friday, the

week culminated with “Grim Reaper Day.” On this day, at 50 minute intervals, a gong sounding over the PA system preceded the entry of the “grim reaper” into a classroom, where he’d pull one SADD member from class. Each student pulled represented an actual victim who lost their life due to drugs and alcohol.

Eight members of East Islip High School’s mock trial team – Ashley Brett, Britney Baker, Jack Carney, Erica Hayden, Angela Loizides, Elizabeth Loizides, Kierstin O’Hara and Joe Teknus – visited Harvard University for the Angela R. Mathew High School Mock Trial Seminar on October 4th-6th, accompanied by teachers Patsy Lester and Karen Schindler. The seminar was run by the members of the Harvard University mock trial team, ranked first in the nation. Teams traveled

from all over North America to participate, including Texas, Ohio and Toronto. The Harvard students led participants in interactive workshops and intensive one-onone breakout sessions to teach the finer points of argument and trial advocacy. Each session focused on a particular topic, such as opening statements, objections and cross-examination. At the end of the weekend, teams competed in scrimmage rounds judged by Harvard Mock Trial members. East Islip

represented the defendant in a burglary trial against Andover Phillips Academy’s prosecution. The East Islip team received high praise from the judge for their outstanding performance. According to Lester, East Islip’s mock trial coach, the team members benefited enormously from the experience and are already planning a return trip next year. “It was a great learning and bonding experience for the whole team,” said Baker, a junior.

21st Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beach State Park on October 19th. The two seniors helped the society raise $120 for the cause. Approximately 65,000 walkers took part in the
