n October 17th, students from 11th grade English classes at Bay Shore High School traveled to the Sleepy Hollow cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York to partake in a two-hour historical walking tour. Thanks in large part to a generous contribution from the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund, 55 students were able to complement their reading of Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” A great time was had by all.

The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year scholarships to the highest-rated applicants in the 2017 competition. Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks. College students are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; permanent legal resident status does not qualify. Male and female students compete separately. The 2017 Most Valuable Student scholarship contest is open to any high school senior who is a US Citizen. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Applications for the 2017 contest will be available online starting September 1st, 2016. The 2017 MVS application deadline is November 30th, 2016 at 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time.

This presidential campaign is like no other. One candidate is a successful businessman who beat all the odds, plus 16 other Republicans, and became the Republican nominee for President. So...to anyone who is still undecided, I ask you - How? The two choices you have could not be more different! Don’t allow the onslaught of the mainstream media to confuse you. Over 2,400 middle school students from across Long Island recently enjoyed the beautiful fall weather at Technology Day 2016 at Adventureland in Farmingdale. Joe Fili, the originator of the hands-on learning event said that in 2016 Technology Day would be attended by more than 2,400 students representing 50 schools. The event, which started in 2001, has been a STEM event since before the term STEM was even popularized. STEM, which is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering

and Math, is the practical application of the concepts middle school students are learning in their classes. Technology day challenges students to use the skills they learn in multiple classes, and apply those skills to complete a workbook with a variety of questions about ride design and operation. Each student is given a workbook which they complete in teams. Their teachers have had preevent training on to help them connect the park activities to the classroom activities. “The park is pretty

unique on Technology Day,” said Emily Guarnieri, Technology Director for the Diocese of Rockville Centre. “There are students working in small groups everywhere you look, measuring, triangulating height and exploring engineering design principles such as structure, safety, and accessibility,” Guarnieri continued. The schools of the Diocese of Rockville Centre are the largest group participating in the event, representing 37 of the 50 participating schools.

Back in the Spotlight By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms ﬂailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very ﬁrst dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

ARTISTIC LESSON - Students at Brook Avenue School recently had a visit from artist Miguel Cossio. Mr. Cossio taught the students about Dia de Los Muertos, a celebration observed in Mexico and other parts of Latin America, and worked with SHARKS & STINGRAYS - Students from Fifth Avenue School recently visited the them on creating puppets and masks. Coalition Honored Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the members of the Islip Town Board recently honored the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition (IBCC) in recognition of their twenty years of service to the Islip community. The IBCC has helped support and comfort

hundreds of victims of breast cancer, and has provided aid to their families as well. The organization has steadily grown, and under the leadership of its current board members, the IBCC has been able to make more of an impact than ever before.

“Thanks to the efforts of this organization, hundreds of residents over the past twenty years have benefited from an improved quality of life during their struggles with cancer,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Islip High School students in the Junior Chamber of Commerce and Interact clubs recently volunteered for the Islip American Legion Auxiliary Unit 411, helping sort greeting cards for veterans. The cards will be used for care packages and during the holidays to send to

deployed soldiers and recovering soldiers in veterans’ hospitals. “We are thankful that the students volunteered for this,” said teacher Renee Clock, the Junior Chamber of Commerce Club adviser. “It is important and sentimental for veterans to receive words of love and

encouragement when they are away fighting for our freedom or in a hospital recovering from injuries. We also send cards to veterans living in nursing homes, and it brings tears to their eyes to know that they are not forgotten.”

Bay Shore’s participating educators also attended various workshops on key issues including new curriculum and assessment in Regents and Advanced Placement courses and innovative classroom methods. Bay Shore teachers Mrs. Jennifer Ingold and Mr. Michael Krieger were invited to facilitate a workshop as winners of the LICSS Outstanding Middle School Teacher

Award. In collaboration with High School teacher Mr. Chris McKenna, they presented to an audience of over 50 Long Island educators on the Bay Shore team’s collaborative efforts towards department alignment in Grades 6-12. Dr. Lemke referred to the experience as a “powerful opportunity for both Social Studies advocacy and professional development. There’s no doubt that the Bay Shore team is recognized as leaders in Social Studies education on Long Island.”

East Islip High School’s girls volleyball teams held their annual Dig Pink event on October 5th, in recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in order to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Dressed in pink at the games against visiting Brentwood, the crowd, including Superintendent John V. Dolan, cheered the

varsity Lady Redmen on to a 3-0 victory. The junior varsity team lost a tough match, but still maintained a winning 5-3 record. The dedicated athletes also helped support the special event by dipping pretzels, preparing bags of candy to sell, making posters and decorating the gymnasium. Throughout October, the entire high school will follow the

volleyball players’ lead and wear pink on Fridays to show support for the cause. “The support from the students, teachers, staff, and parents makes this event bigger every year,” said varsity head coach Romina Chacon. “We hope to continue to raise more awareness and funds throughout the month and upcoming years.”

Last February, students at James E. Allen Jr./Sr. High School hosted television chef and cookbook author Lidia Bastianich. Last week, she returned the hospitality by welcoming students at Eataly in New York City. The Western Suffolk BOCES students were treated to a VIP tour October 13th of Eataly, an Italian marketplace, restaurant and cooking school owned by Bastianich and her partners. The students saw how mozzarella and dough are made during hands-on

demonstrations and were treated to tasty samples of roast beef and gelato. The tour concluded in the cooking classroom where Bastianich answered enthusiastic and thoughtful questions from the students and offered cooking tips. Each student went home with a goodie bag complete with pasta and sauce. “Our students have not stopped talking about how much they learned on this trip and how much they enjoyed spending time with Lidia,” said Regina Giunta,

murdered. Since that tragic event, Mr. Lucero has been active in community projects and works to empower youth. Mr. Lucero spoke to Bay Shore students to share his message of hope.

TOP OF THE LIGHT - Recently, Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Puccio’s 4th grade classes at South Country School visited the Fire Island Lighthouse. In addition to learning about the local flora and fauna, the students climbed all 192 steps to the top. They also had the opportunity to learn about the history of the U.S. Life-Saving Service.

Reading Goals “Reading is the essential leg to success for an elementary child,” said Brian McCarthy, principal of Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, reflecting on a terrific fall

book fair presented by the school’s PTA. Students happily selected books that interested them, helping Commack Road in its Parents as Reading Partners program.

Shiver Me Timber Point The PTA of East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School was recently chosen as 2016 Suffolk County regional winners of the New York State PTA’s Pick a Reading Partner program award. “Shiver Me Timber Point,” the school’s pirate-laden theme for PARP, included treasure maps tracking the total

number of minutes read by students, and messages in a bottle with pictures of the children and their reading partners. Principal Danielle Naccarato even dressed up as a pirate princess for a vocabulary hat parade after her students exceeded a principal’s challenge of reading for 40,000 minutes or more. “We think that PARP

strengthens reading and communication skills between children and adults,” said Timber Point PTA President Susan Kiernan. “We are thrilled that our PTA was recognized for all their hard work, and for our amazing chairpersons Alyson Ferreby and Marianne Gilmore.”

Funding Received Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) premier event to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer, was held for the first time at Suffolk County Community College’s Eastern Campus in Riverhead on Sunday, October 23rd. The event attracted 3,500 participants and raised thousands for cancer research. In conjunction with the event, Suffolk County Community College and ACS have established the Breast Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Scholarship. “We’re coming together to support women battling breast cancer, to

remember those who’ve lost the battle, and to push for continued advances in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment,” Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said. “We are proud to host this event for the first time on our Eastern Campus, and look forward to a long and successful relationship with the American Cancer Society and the search for a cure. I urge everyone who can to visit our beautiful campus to take part in this important event,” McKay said. “The Suffolk Community College Foundation is celebrating this event and raising awareness of breast

North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center has received funding from the Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund at the Long Island Community Foundation to pilot an exciting new initiative entitled Project Access. The goal of this comprehensive research project is to improve access to mental health and addictions care for all those who need it. According to project director Andrew Malekoff, families who are seeking community-based mental health or substance abuse care for their children are struggling to get it in a timely manner; access delayed is access denied.” Project Access was developed in response to the issues of parity and

network adequacy within our health system. The Mental Health Parity and Addictions Equity Act of 2008 require that health insurance carriers meet Federal coverage standards on par with other medical benefits. Network adequacy refers to a health insurance carrier’s requirement to provide enrollees with timely access to a sufficient number of providers included in their benefit contract. Project Access will investigate the problem of families gaining timely and affordable mental health and addictions care, identify obstacles to accessing timely care, and disseminate findings to activate change. These activities will be executed

by a variety of prominent stakeholders who have come together to form the Project Access Planning Committee. Together with researchers from the LIUC.W. Post School of Social Work, the Committee will identify the target population for the study and then create two surveys: one for families and one for service providers. The data will be analyzed and a report generated on the findings. The Committee will develop a plan for disseminating the results to the public to increase knowledge as well as to inform advocacy efforts around mental health parity and network adequacy.
