Time Of The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And just like that, the holiday season is upon us. It seems like just last week we were soaking up the last few rays of sun at the beach, our toes in the sand, the waves crashing ashore… and now we’re busy digging out boots and scarves and stocking up on all things pumpkin spice. Such is the circle of life, the cycle of seasons and the wonder of Mother Nature. Speaking of, “sources” claim this winter will be colder than normal, with

record snowfall yet again. Shocking. Really, do we need to start obsessing about the first flake from now? It is what it is; it will be what it will be – the end. Deal with it. Or don’t, and hibernate until March. The mass hysteria is beyond maddening, especially since most meteorologists can’t seem to predict the next day’s forecast, let alone an entire season’s worth. Just sayin’. In the meantime, can we all just enjoy the cool, crisp air of Autumn? Play in the leaves, pick pumpkins and apples, check out a haunted

house or corn maze, create a unique Halloween costume, start planning your Thanksgiving menu ... Save the shovels for another day. For now, anyway. And as for those Christmas gift lists ... relax. There’s something about shopping for the holidays during the actual season, don’t you think? Those who are already finished are missing out on the true spirit in their rush to cross tasks off the to-do list. It’s not a race. It’s about putting some thought into it and enjoying the experience.

National Eating Healthy Day is Wednesday, November 5th, and the American Heart Association wants people to listen the advice of generations of mothers: Eat your vegetables (and fruit). Americans typically consume about half their recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables. The American Heart Association recommends eating eight or more fruit and vegetable servings every day. For an average adult consuming 2,000 calories daily, that means about 4 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables a day. Students in East Islip High School’s International Business Globalization Career Academy began the school year by attending the Virtual Enterprises International Business and Entrepreneurship Leadership Conference on October 8th at at the LIU Post campus in Brookville. This special learning experience included meeting professional business entrepreneurs; concurrent sessions on entrepreneurship, hightech start-ups, sports and fashion; and a speed networking student

competition in which representatives from each VE firm pitched a 30-second elevator speech in front of more than 600 students and judges. The Business Academy’s firm, VE Connected, is offering an online trade show and advertising website as its virtual business for 2014-2015. The students will conduct business with other Virtual Enterprises firms globally throughout the school year. “The students are very excited to be part of the Academy and are working

together to promote their new business venture,” said Career Academy Director Israel Malinowitzer. “The students have already learned how to work as a team, and there is a real camaraderie among them.” Other upcoming events for the Business Academy include a written business plan competition in December, the business plan presentation in January and the Virtual Enterprises International annual trade show in New York City next April.

Zakia Eleazer of Bay Shore was recently selected to participate in the 2014 Miss Teen New York pageant competition that will take place on Sunday November 16th, Zakia learned of her acceptance into this year’s competition when the pageant announced their selections following interviewing in the local New York area. Zakia submitted an application and took part in an interview session that was conducted by this

year’s New York Pageant Coordinator. Zakia will be competing, for her share of thousands of dollars in prizes and specialty gifts that will be distributed to contestants. Zakia will be competing in the Miss Teen ivision, one of four divisions that will have young ladies ages of 7 and 19 competing in modeling routines, which include casual wear and formal wear. Most important, Zakia will display her personality and interviewing skills while interviewing with this year’s New York judging panel. Personality is the number one aspect that each contestant is judged on during all phases of competition. If Zakia were to win the title of Miss Teen New York, she would represent New York and the surrounding communities at the National Competition that will take place in Orlando,

School spirit and community pride were at an all-time high with crowds of students, parents, alumni and community members converging to show their Islip Pride during the annual Islip School District Homecoming on October 18th. Community residents lined Main Street and cheered as the Homecoming parade passed through town, led by Grand Marshal and high school economics teacher Charles Arciello. The parade featured handmade Disney-themed floats designed by the senior, junior, sophomore and freshmen classes.

The seniors’ float featured Genie from “Aladdin,” the juniors’ showcased Phineas and Ferb, the sophomores’ was Nemo and the freshman class created a replica of Lightning McQueen from “Cars.” As the parade rolled onto the grounds of the high school, crowds witnessed the unavailing of the brand new turf football field. Superintendent of Schools Susan A. Schnebel and Athletic Director Bob Panariello welcomed the community and thanked them for their continued support of the district as Board of Education members, Assistant Superintendent for Business Michael

Zeterberg, Plant Facilities Administrator Dan Leddy, High School Principal Michael Mosca and student-representatives cut the ribbon to mark a new chapter in Islip history. The excitement continued as the stands overlooking the football field were filled with fans eager to cheer on their Buccaneers. They were not to be disappointed, as the Hauppauge Eagles proved to be no match for the hometown Bucs. As the crowd kept the energy level high, the game ended with victory for the Bucs, topping the Eagles 27-10 to improve to a perfect 6-0 record.

Student Of The Month East Islip High School senior Steven Cinquemani has been named the first Student of the Month by the East Islip Community Chamber, recognizing his internship success. Students like Cinquemani who are enrolled in the school’s Environment Green Career Academy are required to obtain internships as part of the Academy program. At a recent Board of Education meeting, Cinquemani was recognized by the Board members, district administration and two special guests – Chamber President Joseph Gabriel of Joseph Gabriel Architects and Vice President Russ Regan of Rainbow International.

Gabriel explained how Cinquemani’s internship at his architecture firm resulted in sketch and photorealistic renderings used as sales and design tools, as well as with plans filed with the Town of Hempstead. “Steven is a student with a thirst to learn,” said Gabriel, “and we gave him additional educational tools.” “Steven worked all summer for the firm and his experience in his CAD class at the high school really paid off,” said Career Academy Director Israel Malinowitzer, who had recommended him for the internship. “He was a natural, and Mr. Gabriel knew within days that this student had what it

takes to do the work. More importantly, Steven was responsible, respectful and enjoyed doing the work. Once again, this program is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get a first-hand look at what they need to do in the work force.” A scholar-athlete in both basketball and tennis, Cinquemani also participates in the Chess Club, Yearbook Club and STARS. He is a member of the school’s World Language Honor Society and will apply for the National Honor Society this month. Cinquemani plans to study architecture when he attends college in the fall.

Every Monday the wonderful ladies of Racine Salon in Islip open up their salon solely for cancer patients. The staff volunteers their time to give facial treatments, hair cuts and advice, massages and much more! The subject of an Oscarnominated documentary Mondays At Racine, the owners and staff are

providing such a crucial service to these patients. On Monday, October 20th, the Pilot Club of Greater Long Island decided to recognize this by bringing in a “Pick Me Up.” The club, a part of the worldwide women’s service organization Pilot International, was responding to an initiative to respond to the needs of

the scores of caregivers who selflessly help their loved ones and others. On Monday ladies from the club brought in pink ribbon bagels and pastry for some refreshments and a bouquet of pink carnations to be shared amongst the staff to show them how special they are!

More than 200 East Islip community members turned out to enjoy a special night of food and fun at the October 16th Taste Of The Town, sampling signature dishes provided by dozens of local food businesses and bidding on 40 donated gift baskets. The event, held in the district’s administration building, was hosted by students enrolled in East Islip High School’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Career Academy, a new program designed to prepare seniors for careers in the culinary and hospitality fields through a rigorous academic schedule, internships and mentoring programs; and exposure to career professionals and experiences in catering halls, hotels and commercial kitchens. Members of the school’s three other Career Academies – Environment Green, International Business Globalization, and Medical and Health Technology – also joined in to help serve food, assist staff and greet guests such as Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi. Taste of the Town showcased both the new Career Academy and the local dining scene while bringing the community together and raising funds for the the local EJ

Autism Foundation. “The Culinary and Hospitality Academy students and their teachers worked extremely hard to bring this event together,” said Career Academy Director Israel Malinowitzer. “The outpouring of positive feedback from the community and the overall response we received from business

owners was absolutely amazing. The community and businesses were given an opportunity to see the beautiful culinary kitchen that our students will be using this year in order to master their hospitality and culinary skills for future employment and career opportunities. The students are proud of themselves and they should be.”
