During Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, Matias stepped on an IED (Improvised Explosive Device), which caused him to lose both legs below the knees. Matias is a recipient of the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, and Navy Unit Citation. Matias enjoys volunteering with numerous nonprofit organizations that focus on rehabilitation and renewing your faith, and serves as the first Double Amputee Patrolman in the entire country as well as the Vice President of the Suffolk County Police Hispanic Society. Kathya Martinez is a native Ecuadorian, and has worked
in media communications for over eight years. Kathya opens and manages correspondence and communication between clients, customers, and Latinx owned businesses to get projects done. She has been recognized as the “Top Package Producer” in 2018 and 2019 at the Multimedia Contest. Kathya holds an MBA in Marketing from Guayaquil University, and has been seen actively participating in weekly services at St. Anne’s church, including soup kitchen food distributions. She has assisted the Parish Outreach office in donating food to over 250 families, and 1300 individuals that were in weekly. John Gutierrez, better known as John G, was born in Cali, Colombia, and began his career as a DJ at the age of 15. In 2010, John joined La Fiesta 98.5 FM as Production Director and on air jock for the afternoon drive on the only Spanish radio station on Long Island. His passion extends to aiding the Latino Community in using his platform to advocate for support and ending injustice. For those who do plan to head out this October, Sharon Nachman, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital has some tips for families on how to safely trick-or-treat on Halloween during the pandemic.
1. Staying 6 feet away while walking and going from home to home. 2. Go trick-or-treating in small groups. 3. Parents and kids should always wear their masks while walking in the neighborhood, as well as when you open the door to hand out candy. 4. Not allowing (older) kids to go out unsupervised. 5. Consider organizing your route. Talk to friends
and neighbors and have a preset signal. For example, outside lights means kids know this is a home you can stop at for trick-or-treating. 6. Only wrapped candies or treats. 7. Some families may elect to leave a few treats on their outside stoop of their home. If that is the case, then remind kids to only take one! 8. No parties! 9. You can leave a bucket or wear a mask and use hand
sanitizer when handing out treats. No crowding at the door is important. 10. Pre-organize the route. “Parents can work to make trick-or-treating safe. It will take some extra preparation and thinking,” said Dr. Nachman. “Kids can have a good time. It will just look different from past years but that’s fine.”

Six Islip Students Chosen For All-State And All-County Ensembles Six students from Islip High School were recently recognized for their musical accomplishments. Two student-musicians were selected to perform with All-State Honor Ensembles and three students and two alternates were selected to perform with the All-County Vocal Jazz Ensemble. This year’s All-State Ensemble performances will be held virtually in December. The All-County Vocal Jazz Ensemble performance is scheduled for Nov. 7 at East Islip High School. Shannon Brody was chosen for the All-State Symphony Orchestra and Tyler Cirulnick was
chosen for the All-State Treble Chorus. They were selected based on their performances in the New York State School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Festival. Cirulnik, Leah Cyran and Madelynn Lang were chosen for the All-County Vocal Jazz Ensemble, with Maggie Frazzer and Jordyn Zurbaran as alternates. Vocal Jazz participants were selected through a video audition process that took place last spring. Students prepare for the festivals with the assistance of their school music teachers and then participate in a series of rehearsals that
conclude with a concert. The students will have the opportunity to work and perform under the leadership of highly skilled directors from the college music community and the professional music industry. “We are extremely thrilled to have these remarkable studentmusicians representing Islip in the All-State and All-County Jazz festivals,” said Brian Kroll, Islip’s director of fine and performing arts. “Their selection is a testament to their hard work and their teachers’ support.” Photos courtesy of Islip School District
