Historic Surprise

tudents attending East Islip High School’s annual pep rally on October 9th were in for a happy and historic surprise when football legend and local hero Norman “Boomer” Esiason paid an unexpected visit to congratulate East Islip on their inclusion in the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll. The band, kickline and cheerleaders performed, and 11 different varsity athletic teams were introduced and given their moment to shine.

Student Spotlight SUBMITTED BY: SOFIA PAPASTAVROU, AGE 16, HHH HIGH SCHOOL WEST Currently, Cancer is responsible for 20,000 deaths a day. 20,000 lives lost to this illness. First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life. The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people

have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live. I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died. But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence. I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.

In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense. Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 7th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Wednesday, November 18th, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards or cash donations. Here I come to save the day, yet again, with my witty observations on life from within the confines of my bowl. The Human, it seems, is busy getting herself ready for a wedding – one, I might add, that I was not invited to. And here I had my bowtie and top hat all picked out for the occasion. How rude. I suppose this means my dinner will be late too. What does a fish have to do to maintain a steady feeding schedule? Sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes once… four flakes, five… sometimes only a couple when I knock the rest down to the gravel with my fins, never to be seen again. Speaking of which, these

late-night feedings have to stop. Back and forth, I swim my laps, anxiously waiting for my Human to arrive. Eventually, after days of starvation {10 hours or so} I give up hope, putting myself to bed with no supper. But wait, is that a light I see? I groggily press my nose against the glass, dimly making out the shadow of my Human, apologizing for getting home so late. I sleepily bounce from one branch of my plant to another, aimlessly chomping at imaginary flakes, before putting myself back to bed, thoroughly unsatisfied. I suppose I’m always hungry though. I have no concept of time, or quantity. As many times as I find flakes fluttering into my bowl, I will

greedily inhale them, barely pausing to chew in between. From my experience, you have to savor these feeding times, since you never know when the next one may come around. Sort of like the Mets and their quest for the World Series. I haven’t been around long, but I hear this is a pretty rare occurrence. Me, I tend to root for the Marlins. Us fish gotta stick together, after all. But, I suppose I’m a New Yorker, officially. Maybe my Human will buy me some blue and orange gravel so I can root, root, root for the home team…you know, on our trip to the pet store that I’ve been promised since August. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Youth Board Appointees Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced that the Town Board approved the appointment of four adults and two youths to a four-year term on the Islip Youth Board. The Islip Town Youth Bureau and the Islip Youth Board administer three not-for-profit agencies, which provide youth services throughout the town. These agencies include: Youth & Family Counseling Program,

Youth Enrichment Services, and the South Shore Community Organization. “The Islip Youth Board does outstanding work within the Town of Islip community helping our youth agencies to strive. We are grateful for all that the Youth Board does and are sure that the six individuals recently appointed will make our youth agencies that much more successful.

The adults appointed are: Guy Leggio, of Bay Shore, a mason and vice president of the Bay Shore School Board; Dawn Hargraves of Hauppauge, an attorney; Rich Klein of West Islip, a physician; and Jaclyn Mustachio of Holbrook, a student at Stony Brook University. The youths appointed are: Alexander Ortmann of East Islip, and Taylia Hinds of Brightwaters.

Happy Homecoming East Islip enjoyed the happiest of homecomings on October 17th, beginning with a colorful parade leading from Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School through Islip Terrace to Sal Ciampi Field at Boomer Esiason Stadium. Participants from all across the community joined in the fun, including Superintendent John V. Dolan and various young

athletes. Cheerleaders revved up the crowd as the Redmen varsity football squad took the field and quickly got on the scoreboard against Miller Place. In the end, EI’s team won, 17-13, maintaining their undefeated record at 5-0. After halftime entertainment by the high school’s kickline and band, this year’s homecoming

king and queen were announced. The queen, Therese Mittleman, was crowned by Principal William Brennen. Atakan Kemal, the homecoming king, was participating in a cross-country meet during homecoming, but will receive his crown later. The juniors won the float competition with “The Game of Life.”

After the band, kickline and cheerleaders had performed, and 11 different varsity athletic teams had been introduced and given their moment to shine, Boomer emerged on to the gymnasium floor to present the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll program’s special Wilson “golden football” to varsity

football coach Sal Ciampi Jr., while accompanied by Ciampi’s father and former East Islip coach, Sal Ciampi Sr. The younger Ciampi received a commemorative plaque celebrating his 100th coaching victory from Athletic Director Stephen Restivo. High schools honored in the SBHSHR initiative, including East Islip, receive a NFL Character Education Curriculum and are eligible to apply for NFL Foundation grants to help support and grow their football programs. Esaison, a graduate of Timber Point Elementary School, is an alumnus of the high school’s Class of 1979. He attended the

University of Maryland before embarking on a storied 14-year National Football League career with the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals. Since his retirement he has worked as a network color commentator and sports radio co-host. East Islip’s football stadium is named for him. “Our students really appreciated seeing Boomer return to East Islip,” said Restivo. “He’s someone who grew up here, whose dedication and hard work brought him success, and he always gives back to the community. It sends a nice message.”

All-County Honors Flying high on their home turf, East Islip High School’s girls varsity tennis team competed in the Division II Individual Tennis Tournament held at the school on October 11th. Emma Bernardos and Skyler Virginia advanced

to the quarterfinals and earned All-Division honors. In the team’s next matchup on October 13th against Bay Shore, Shelby Clyne and Rebecca Schreiner finished in first place in the doubles tournament, earning them

All-County recognition and the title of Division II doubles champions. Clyne and Schreiner will compete on October 17th in the county competition for the chance to win AllState honors.

Checking in with FTK Members of East Islip’s For the Kids Foundation, now celebrating its 19th year, presented the district with a $45,000 check during an October 8th board meeting. The donation was the result of a generous community and the group’s tireless passion for fundraising to generate resources for academic, cultural and recreational programs, with defining annual events from the recent FTK Carnival to the

Black Tie Gala and Golf Outing. Last year’s FTK’s donations served to restore crucial extracurricular activities including high school and middle school musicals, as well as important anti-bullying programs, technology and infrastructure around the district. This year they were able to go back to the grant process, with FTK approved grants that

include books that will enhance the Balanced Literacy program, the Guided Reading Program, and equipment for math, science, music, art, physical education, family and consumer science, technology and guidance. “We are a community who is motivated and committed to the students of East Islip schools, and we are determined to make a difference,” said FTK President Nancy Goldfader.

Budget Available Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced Islip’s Preliminary 2016 Operating Budget, is available on the town’s website at www.islipny.gov. “Now, for the very first time in the history of Islip Town government, the residents of Islip Town will not only be given numbers, but also the very important details and explanations of the town’s operations to help them understand where their tax dollars are going,” Supervisor Carpenter added. This new format for presenting the annual Operating Budget for the Town of Islip demonstrates that Supervisor Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board are committed to responsible government and transparency. “I am pleased to share this Preliminary 2016 Operating Budget with Islip residents as well as the very important details about how their tax dollars are spent,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I am committed to ensuring Islip residents easy access to important information including what the Town

of Islip is doing to manage revenue and expenses in the most efficient way possible. I think it is important for taxpayers to understand the portion of their annual tax bill that actually goes to the town is only 4.73%, one of the lowest of all the towns in Suffolk County,” Supervisor Carpenter continued. During the past several months, Supervisor Carpenter met with all the members of the Town Board, Commissioners and department heads to engage them in the process of developing a very thorough budget report for 2016. The Town of Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget is tax cap compliant. This cap limits the increase of the total tax levy to the lesser of 2% or the rate of inflation. Limitations due to this tax cap present the challenge of maintaining services at a time when revenues are stagnant and fixed costs such as pension payments and health insurance benefits are increasing. The 2016 Budget for the Town’s three major funds reflects a very modest increase of 1.54% over the 2015 budget, which

translates to an additional $19.15 per household. The services that are provided to Islip Town residents include: Administrative, Assessment, Building and Grounds Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance, Traffic Safety, Tax Collection, Town Clerk, Public Safety, Parks and Recreation, Water Management, Youth Services, Highway Repair and Snow Removal. These funds have a few recurring sources of revenue, including the Property Tax, various Fees for Services, the Town’s share of the Mortgage Tax proceeds and Interest Earned on the Town’s deposits. However, since the economic recession, the Mortgage Tax proceeds and interest earnings have decreased, thus putting a drastic burden on the Town of Islip taxpayers. “Our top priority is to hold the line on taxes and deliver a fiscally conservative, efficient and transparent budget to the taxpayers of our town and that is what I believe we have done with this budget,” Supervisor Carpenter remarked.

Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius had a fantastic time at their Outdoor Adventure Field Trip last week. Hitting Sunken Meadow State Park, the students had a completely interactive and immersive day outdoors. Participating in a great day of activities coordinated by Western Suffolk BOCES’ Outdoor and Environmental Education

program, these young teens had an opportunity to work on team-building skills and cooperation, all while breathing in the lovely fall air and making great memories. Students worked in small groups under the guidance of an instructor/ facilitator, progressing through a series of increasingly difficult group tasks. Activities focused on

everything from building individual confidence to more challenging tasks that required the group to work together and solve them as a team. Discussing each activity as a team afterward helped bolster learning about the decision-making process and problemsolving styles. Fresh air, skill-building and fun – a winning combination!

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Finalists Mentored Seventeen high school students mentored by faculty at Stony Brook University have been selected as regional finalists in the 2015 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology – one of the top nationwide research competitions for high school researchers. Stony Brook University mentored a total of 51 semifinalists in the competition, marking a University record. The results rank the University among the institutional leaders who mentor high school researchers from Long Island and around the country. The regional finalists, selected from the group of 466 national semifinalists, will advance to one of six regional competitions held over three consecutive weekends in November. Winners of the regional events will then advance to the National Finals held at George Washington University in December where $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including two top awards of $100,000. Students at Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) climbed on National Grid trucks to see how they operate for the Touch-A-Truck program which, came to their Huntington campus. This program gives the students the ability to engage, see, and the touch the equipment and to have some fun. DDI, a non-profit, and National Grid have a strong partnership and have been working together strengthening children’s education. Students enjoyed the Dig-It which they could sit in and pull on the levers while wearing a National Grid hard hat. National Grid employees were on hand with their trucks and they allowed the students to explore and interact with some of the equipment and safety gear they use on a daily basis. Students also watched National Grid workers operate the vacuum truck which makes lots of noise and vacuums up rocks; workers use it to excavate in sensitive areas. Children with developmental disabilities and autism have an easier time understanding what they can see and touch, while having fun. DDI supports children and adults

with developmental disabilities in achieving a lifetime of growth through education and innovative, individualized services. National Grid, in partnership with DDI, supports STEM education and awarded DDI a Cinderella Grant that provided for renovations, energy efficiencies, and improvements in classrooms, housing for students, and paving the parking lot. “DDI is most grateful for the Cinderella Grant provided by National Grid, which allowed us to re-grade and repave the parent and school bus drop-off area, enhancing the safety and security for our students,” said Dan Rowland, Director of Development, Development Disabilities Institute. “It was wonderful to see the excitement on the students’ faces when they saw the big trucks and then were able to climb on them. National Grid is extremely proud to partner with DDI through our Cinderella program. We wanted to utilize this opportunity to have an interactive event with the students and give them a chance to get up close with some of our vehicles and our field crews,” said Kiel Costella, Community

& Customer Program Manager at National Grid. For more than forty years, our Cinderella program has helped to revitalize local communities not on Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island. Through this program, National Grid has been able to offer revitalization grants to encourage non-profit organizations and community groups to restore buildings throughout Long Island communities. This is just one of the many programs at National Grid, along with countless volunteer efforts under National Grid’s employee volunteer program, Power to Serve, that illustrate National Grid’s commitment to improving the quality of life on Long Island. The Cinderella Grant awarded to DDI helped fund some of the needed improvements to the school. The parking lot had become quite a safety hazards for the students, parents, and faculty and was repaved with the grant. Safety is National Grid’s number one priority and they are pleased to help make that kind of improvement to the school. National Grid looks forward to working with DDI on future projects.

Mercy Center held its fifth annual run/walk over the bridge for homeless teens at Smith Point Park on Saturday, October 17th. Participants from all over the Island came out to support the cause and enjoy the beautiful and unique 3.1 mile course over the bridge. The most senior runner was 79 and the youngest was 6; both belong to the running club North Country Road Warriors. They were among 20 other club members who came this year to run and walk the event.
