To recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Northwell Health Cancer Institute and Katz Institute for Women’s Health will hold a free education event about prevention, screening and treatment from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 24 at the Imbert Cancer Center, 440 East Main Street, Bay Shore. About one in eight
women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. Breast cancer is a disease all women should monitor their risk for. During the educational event, Northwell’s breast experts will discuss: - Risk factors for breast cancer; - Latest diagnostic and treatment options;
- Screening options and guidelines; - Recent studies about breast cancer prevention. Northwell’s breast specialists are at the forefront of breast surgery, treatment and prevention. The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Halloween has become a hugely popular time for fun and festivities, but with it comes the potential for a variety of fire hazards. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages everyone to take these simple precautions to stay safe without sacrificing that fun. “Halloween brings an opportunity to wear fun costumes, decorate our homes, and eat too much candy,” says Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “However, without proper safety precautions, we run the risk of turning good
times into the wrong kind of scary ones.” According to NFPA research, between 2012 and 2016, decorations were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 800 reported home structure fires per year, resulting in an average of two civilian deaths, 34 civilian injuries and $11 million in direct property damage. The decoration was too close to a heat source such as a candle or equipment in almost half of these fires. NFPA offers these tips to stay safe during the spooky season: Costumes: Avoid fabric that billows or trails behind
you, as these can easily ignite. If you are making your own costume, avoid loosely woven fabrics like linen and cotton, which can be very flammable. Decorations: Many common decorations like cornstalks, crepe paper, and dried flowers are very flammable. Keep these and similar decorations far away from any open flames or heat sources, like candles, heaters, and light
bulbs. Candles: Using candles as decoration can be risky if not done correctly. Keep them in a well- attended area out of the path of potential trick-or-treaters. Remind children of the dangers of open flames, and make sure they are supervised at all times when candles are lit. Extinguish candles before leaving an area. Jack-O-lanterns: Glow
sticks or electric candles are the safest choice when it comes to lighting up your jack-o-lantern, but if you choose to use a real candle, do so with extreme caution. Light a candle inside a jack-o-lantern using long fireplace matches or a utility lighter, and keep it away from other decorations. Visibility: Give children flashlights or glowsticks for lighting, these can

Smoke Alarms: This is a great time to make sure your smoke alarms are functional and up-to-date. Exits: Exits are NOT an appropriate place for decorations. When decorating, ensure that nothing is blocking any escape routes.

Drug Take Back Day To recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Northwell Health Cancer Institute and Katz Institute for Women’s Health will hold a free education event about prevention, screening and treatment from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 24 at the Imbert Cancer Center, 440 East Main Street, Bay Shore. About one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of their lifetime. Breast cancer is a disease all women should monitor their risk for. During the educational event, Northwell’s breast experts will discuss: ·Risk factors for breast cancer; ·Latest diagnostic and treatment options; ·Screening options and guidelines; ·Recent studies about breast cancer prevention. Northwell’s breast
specialists are at the forefront of breast surgery, treatment and prevention. The panel’s physician experts include: Melissa Fanna, MD, breast surgeon; Kenneth Gold, MD, medical oncologist; and Nina Vincoff, MD, breast radiologist. America’s Boating Course Offered ‘Brianna’s Law’ has passed the State of New York Assembly, where the law will require ALL who operate a mechanically propelled vessel on navigable waters, to carry a BOATING SAFETY CERTIFICATE. This law will be implemented in five annual phases beginning January 1, 2020. The required age will change each year and in complete affect for all boaters by January 1, 2024. Islip High School’s fitness training area for athletes and physical education students has undergone a major upgrade, rebranding the space as a true fitness center and not just a weight room. “When I came here three years ago, we already had the rack system, dumbbells and pin loader machines, but the one thing the fitness center lacked was cardio equipment,” said John Sparacio, Islip’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “It was really just a weight
room, not a real fitness center.” Over the past two years, Sparacio and his team started transitioning in cardio equipment such as treadmills, recumbent bikes, advanced motion trainers, ellipticals and rowing machines. They also painted the room, brightening it and branding it with Islip’s purple and gold. Access to the room is available throughout the day as part of the curriculum for PE classes. “We are trying to meet all the needs of the
