Behan and Superintendent of Schools Linda J. Rozzi presented McGovern with a certificate of excellence for his longtime leadership efforts in assisting other students, particularly in regards to looking out for those with food allergies

and standing up against bullying. “Corey is a dedicated friend and leader with an exemplary character,” said Sue Kavanagh, East Islip SEPTO president.

Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci, along with the members of the Islip Town Board, celebrated October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by honoring Bonnie Edsall of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. Ms. Edsall is a Resident Nurse and Breast Health Center/ Radiation Oncology Nurse Manager,

and has helped care for countless members of the Town of Islip and Long Island community suffering from cancer. Ms. Edsall has served as the Breast Health Educator, Mammography Nurse, and Medical/ Surgical Nurse, and has 16 years of experience as a Support Group Facilitator for multiple support

groups. She is also the Breast Health Liaison for Good Samaritan Hospital, is the co-author of “Innovative Nursing Roles of the Breast Health Center,” and is an active member of the Breast Leadership Committee, national and local chapters of the Oncology Nursing Society, and the National Consortium of Breast Centers. In order to be recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction, a student must receive an average score of at least 3.5 on their exams and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Several different award levels are offered by the College Board’s Advanced Placement Program, all recognizing academically strong students who display college-level achievement through AP courses and exams. These exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with a score of 3 or higher qualifying students for college credit. East Islip boasted 57 Scholars in total for 2014. Three students from last year’s graduating class – William Farrell, William Meehan and Grant Stroehlein – were named to the highest level of National AP Scholar for 2014, one which requires an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. A dozen East Islip students were named 2014 AP Scholars with Honor, including seniors Benjamin Acosta, Katie Bunde, Tyler Clehane, Raymond Filippone, Amanda Healy and Kristen Tomasini, as well as six graduates. Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing. Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well. Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.

Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time. I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge. I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming

over his tropical sanctuary. And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me? Can I have some? Please?? And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish. I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

Call To End Bullying

Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci and members of the Islip Town Board recently joined local government and school officials at an assembly at Loretta Park Elementary School in Brentwood, which focused on ending bullying. Recent instances of violence and the rise of cyber-bullying brought these officials together to stress the importance of anti-bullying behavior. Anti-bullying advocate Jamel Hudson, a resident of Bay Shore, has partnered with the Brentwood

School District to help get the message across, and has led several assemblies in front of hundreds of young students. “I applaud Brentwood School District officials for their continued commitment to ridding their schools of bullying. The district’s leadership regarding a zero-tolerance policy is commendable, as it helps to ensure that all students are provided a safe and secure atmosphere,” said Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci. “Bullying isn’t a new problem and it most

certainly isn’t a simple one to fix. However, in Brentwood, we are taking proactive steps towards combating it. It is our responsibility to provide a safe environment for your students,” said Helen Moss, President of the Brentwood Board of Education. Today, one in three students in the United States says he or she has been bullied in school. A study by the National Crime Prevention Council found that 43 percent of teenagers reported being victims of cyber-bullying.

Cisco Certiﬁcation Recent East Islip High School graduate Austin Ward has become the second East Islip student to achieve the prestigious Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician certification, a major benchmark in the field of information technology. Ward, a member of East Islip’s Class of 2014 and the school’s Green Career Academy, was enrolled in East Islip’s two-year Cisco Network Academy program under the tutelage of Paul McHugh, who was recently designated by Cisco as an Advanced Level instructor. The course uses an authentic Cisco lab that permits students to learn via real-world network design and troubleshooting. Fellow 2014 alumnus and Cisco

Network Academy attendee Dan Murphy obtained Cisco certification at the end of the last school year. Ward believes that difficult exams such as the CCENT can not only further a student’s education, but can also serve as milestones to enhance other areas in life. “Before I started studying for the CCENT, I had atrocious studying habits, and that just won’t cut it at college,” said Ward. “I figured this was a chance for me to really buckle down for once and give something my all. As I started my journey on my path to receive my certification, I realized how easily I was able to manage my time. The time that I put into studying for this

test really prepared me for what’s to come in my future, and not just with college.” Ward was recently asked to participate in a meeting with Senator Phil Boyle in which students were asked to discuss their thoughts on New York’s Common Core State Standards, and spoke on behalf of East Islip’s Career Academies at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. He plans to work as an intern at Motorola Solutions next summer following his freshman year at college. “We will hear many wonderful things about Austin over the next few years, because he is very bright and does not give up,” said Malinowitzer.
