The Tech Advantage There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

Carve funny or scary faces into the fruit’s juicy flesh; Hot dogs and apple pie could then complete the bash. “Never mind, I like the haunting atmosphere,” you say. Fine, enjoy it. We can, each of us, have it our own way. As long as we all happily hold hands together in the end And concur that a good time by all of us was spent.

A group of young accountants put aside calculators and picked up paint brushes for their latest volunteer project with Keep Islip Clean. These volunteers from the NextGen Committee came up with whimsical designs and painted four trash receptacles for use in

Islip’s public parks. Studies conducted by Keep America Beautiful, which is KIC’s parent organization, show conclusively that cans sporting colorful designs greatly increase their use, thereby reducing litter in public spaces. The 55 gallon drum cans were donated by Billy

Hill of Rainbow Party Rentals, who has provided receptacles for all of KIC’s painted can projects. NextGen volunteers are affiliated with the NYS Society of CPAs and have done multiple projects with KIC, including beach cleanups and community garden work.

Barbering Teacher James Ricciardo and several graduates from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Barbering Program volunteered their time and provided shaves and haircuts to 69 men at the recent Stand Down for veterans in need at the Northport VA Medical Center. They serviced veterans who served in Desert Storm, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. The original Stand Down was used during the

Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. Today the purpose of Stand Down is for veterans in need to be afforded the opportunity to receive services in one location. They may enjoy a warm meal, receive items for personal hygiene, get information about medical and dental care, and enjoy the camaraderie of other veterans. Ricciardo said, “We participate in the Stand Down each year because

we want to give back. It is a way for us to serve those individuals who served our country. We hope when we give them a nice clean shave and a haircut, it will make the veterans feel better.” Hayden Sonner a 2015 graduate said, “This is my second year doing this and I think it’s a great way to give back. I’m very thankful for everything the men and women in the military have done to protect us.”

CAREER DISCOVERY DAY - Legislator Tom Barraga recently met with 6th grade students at Bay Shore Middle School for Career Discovery Day. The program is designed to help students gain knowledge of personal characteristics, interests, aptitudes, and skills needed to be successful in various careers and to give them a greater understanding of the relationship between school performance and future choices.

Remote Robot The East Islip School District received funding in 2014 from New York State Sen. Phil Boyle which was used to purchase a VGo robot to assist in the instructional program for student Ryan Norton. VGo technology serves to open up academic and social environments to ill, disabled and immunedeficient students, allowing them to see, hear,

talk and move as they remotely attend classes via their homes. Norton, an eighth grader at East Islip Middle School, has atypical cystic fibrosis and cannot regularly attend classes in person. Using the VGo robot to virtually participate in lessons, he is able to remain engaged with both school and community, an important factor for both

health and education. “The VGo robot gives our students in need, like Ryan, the ability to interact with fellow classmates and the classroom teacher,” said Superintendent John V. Dolan, who viewed the robot in action, along with Principal Mark Bernard and other administrators, during a recent visit to the school from Sen. Boyle.

Earning Eagle Badge

Daniel Joseph Ruland successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on April 20th, officially making him the 58th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Daniel’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, November 26th, starting at 11 a.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road in East Islip. Daniel is currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski and formally of Troop 508 - with Scoutmaster Dr. William Pomerantz. On his “road to Eagle,” Daniel has served Troop 205 as Troop Guide and Patrol Leader. Daniel has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending and participating in National Boy Scout High Adventure - Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM, where Daniel and

his crew backpacked, hiked, and camped in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountain Range of the 210 square mile facility. Daniel also attended two different Boy Scout Summer Camps - both Camp Minsi and NoBeBoSco and had wonderful Scouting adventures to Washington, D.C., Gettysburg, and a multitude of camping weekends on Long Island. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Daniel has actually earned a total of 27 merit badges. The Service Project that Daniel developed, planned, and constructed with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was two dugouts at the Little League Fields in East Islip - protecting the players from the sun and inclement weather. As Daniel reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “I know as long as I follow the Scout Laws and Scout Oath in my everyday life, my goals can become a reality.” Daniel graduated from the East Islip High School

this last spring, where he was very involved with sports. Daniel was on the J.V. and Varsity Football Teams, and won the Suffolk County Championship in 2014 and were runners up in 2015. He was also on the J.V. and Varsity Baseball Teams. Daniel was awarded the Scholar Athlete for the last two years, while also being awarded with the White Letter Award for having the highest overall GPA on the Varsity Football Team as a Senior. He also played on the high school Lacrosse team as well as baseball for the Little League of the Islip’s Senior League, and Travel Teams. While in high school, Daniel was a member of the Environmental Academy, the Environmental Club and the SADD Club. Daniel is currently a Freshman at Virginia Tech, where he is studying and majoring in Building Construction. Upon college graduation Daniel would like to enter the U.S. Military. He is a proud recipient of an Army ROTC National Scholarship and a member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. Upon graduation he will be a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. Daniel is the son of Stephen and Lisa Ruland, East Islip, and siblings to Aubrie and Maggie.

Set to Thrill Nine of Islip High School’s most promising and dedicated studentmusicians have been recognized with AllCounty honors and selected to perform in the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education’s All-County Festival. Their concert performances will take place on November 19th at Northport High School. Participating in the AllCounty Mixed Chorus, and prepared by Dr. Rich Harris, Jr., Islip’s chorus director, are John Del Genio (tenor), Matthew Kadam (bass), Sheila Kiernan (soprano) and Nicole Poliandro (alto). Participating in the All-

County Women’s Chorus, likewise prepared by Harris, are altos Morgiana McDevitt and Emma Regina. Participating in the AllCounty Band, and prepared by Islip band director Steve Campanella, is clarinetist Katie Warnokowski. Participating in the All-County Orchestra, and prepared by Islip orchestra director Zachary Butterfield, are double bassists James Baldino and Sean Dullaghan. These students were selected for All-County out of a field of hundreds of applications from across Suffolk County based upon their performance at last year’s

New York State School Music Association Solo Festival and subsequent recommendations from their music teachers who prepare the young musicians for the NYSCAME Festival. After a series of rehearsals, the students will have the opportunity to perform under the leadership of skilled conductors from the college music community and professional music industry. “For a small district like Islip, we are thrilled to be represented at the county level by so many exceptional musicians,” said Vincent Green, Islip’s director of fine and performing arts.
