Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is seeking volunteers to train as advocates for our Long Island neighbors living in nursing homes, adult homes, and assisted living facilities throughout Suffolk County. FSL offers initial training classes, ongoing supervision, and continuing education for all volunteer candidates. Volunteer ombudsmen will visit residents weekly

One in four women will be the victim of domestic violence at some point in her lifetime and three women are killed every day at the hands of a current or former intimate partner. This October, as we mark National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco wants domestic violence victims to be aware of two potentially lifesaving victim notification programs offered by the Sheriff’s Office through the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute. The first is the Order of Protection Notification Program, which allows domestic violence victims to register to be notified by phone, text message, or e-mail when a Family Court Order of Protection has been served. Team Wins at State Islip High School’s girls varsity soccer team came home winners of the inaugural NYSSCOGS New York State High School Girls Soccer Hall of Fame Tournament, held in Herkimer, New York in September. The tournament hosted 22 of the state’s top girls soccer programs from Class AA through Class D. Islip’s Lady Bucs began the trip with a six-hour bus ride to upstate Herkimer, and then attended the first Hall of Fame induction ceremony, which included former standout state players, coaches and contributors such as Crystal Dunn, Ali Long, Emily Harner-Pickering, Sara Walen, Abby Wambach and Christie Welsch. One of the inductees for the first Hall of Fame class was alumna Sue WeberAlber, a high school and

collegiate All-American who graduated from Islip in 2003. Her career continued at Hofstra University, where she was named Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year three times, led Hofstra’s Pride team to CAA titles and NCAA Tournament berths in 2005 and 2007, was named CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player twice, and earned a spot on the Hermann Trophy watch list for two years in a row. After her graduation from Hofstra in 2008, the school officially retired her No. 20 jersey. WeberAlber was selected in the third round of the original Women’s Professional Soccer league by the Boston Breakers, and played for the team in 2009 under head coach Tony DiCicco. She is a

longtime team member and current captain of the Long Island Rough Riders of the USL W-League, and serves as head coach of the St. Anthony’s High School girls soccer team. At the Hall of Fame ceremony, Weber-Alber selected current Islip coach Mike Reilly, the Hall’s vice president, to present her award and introduce her. Following the induction ceremony, Islip’s Lady Bucs played the topranked Liverpool team, winning 1-0 in front of a large crowd at Herkimer Community College. The following day, Islip defeated another larger school, Baldwinsville, and won 4-2, earning the title of champions of their division. “It was a great experience for all of us, both on and off the pitch,” said Reilly.

Teachers were excited to inform parents about the material their children will be learning this year. Open house events are an important part of forming the school-home connection that is critical for student success.

Islip High School senior Morgiana McDevitt has been selected as a Long Island Scholar-Artist for the 2017-2018 school year. McDevitt was selected for her outstanding academic and theatrical achievements. The Scholar-Artist program, now in its 10th year, is a collaboration of the Long Island Arts Alliance, “Newsday” and the New York Community Bank Foundation, designed to recognize students judged to be “the best of the best” on

Long Island in the disciplines of music, visual arts, media arts, theater and dance. High school seniors who demonstrate outstanding artistic and academic achievement – including an unweighted grade point average of 90 or above – are nominated by their school districts, and 10 students each from Nassau and Suffolk receive the program’s highest honor. LIAA Scholar-Artists receive a scholarship check for $250 and a framed copy of their “Newsday” profile,

presented at LIAA’s annual gala at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. McDevitt has already had a remarkable arts career. She appeared in the 2015 ABC feature film “Fan Girl” with Kiernan Shipka and Meg Ryan; performed as the lead in Islip High School’s production of “Pippin” as well as roles “The Wiz,” “Into the Woods,” “Cinderella,” “The Sound of Music,” “Big Fish” and “Mary Poppins”; performed at the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale in productions of “Bring It on Bridget” and “The Spelling Bee”; and performed at the BroadHollow Theatre Company’s Bayway Arts Center in East Islip. In July 2017, she was a soloist for the Islip Arts Council’s concert at Heckscher State Park, performing the national anthem with the Long Island Philharmonic. As an active member of Islip’s school community, she has served as junior class vice president, Science Olympiad vice president, and president of the Theatre Arts Club and swing jazz ensemble. Gus Klavas, a graduate from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Facilities Maintenance Program at Ward Technical Center (WTC) in Riverhead was recently honored by the Suffolk County Department of Labor (SCDOL) for the work he did when he participated in the Summer Youth Employment Program. Gus resides in Southold. Head Custodian Art McDermott at WTC

encouraged Gus to complete an application so he could be considered for a summer job at WTC through the SCDOL so he could gain work experience. In addition to working the summer job at WTC, Gus owns and operates his own landscaping business and works part-time at the marina in Southold. Facilities Maintenance Teacher Arthur Pagano said, “Gus was enrolled in the Facilities Maintenance

Program for two years. He excelled and was one of my best students. He was on the honor roll every quarter and a great leader and role model to the other students in the class.” As a member of Skills USA, Gus competed in the Regional Carpenters Assistant Competition at Suffolk County Community College in Bentwood.

Ensemble Selections Continuing a long tradition of musical excellence, 18 East Islip High School students were chosen to participate in the annual New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education AllCounty concert, which will be held on November 17th at Hauppauge High School. NYSCAME’s All-County program showcases the best junior and senior musicians in Suffolk County to perform in bands, choruses and orchestras. Jake Acocella (bass), Jenna Anderson (alto), Connor Barnes (tenor), Alexandra Bertolini (soprano), Gabriella Commisso (alto), Sara Rapuzzi (alto) and Kyle Westgate-Addessi (bass) were selected for the AllCounty Mixed Chorus;

Claudia Banville (soprano), Sarah Bloom (soprano), Madison Lane (alto), Katelyn Spina (alto) and Victoria Tiernan (alto) were selected for the All-County Treble Chorus; Victoria Keenan (violin), Kathryn O’Neill (double bass) and Alexandra Stewart (flute) were selected for the All-County Orchestra; and Alexander Cabrera (baritone saxophone), Max Calarco (trumpet/ cornet) and Cassidy Triolo (clarinet) were selected for the All-County Band. Additionally, seven East Islip student-musicians were recognized for AllState honors this year by the New York State School Music Association and will perform at the annual AllState Music Conference in Rochester, New York from November 30th to

Bigger than the Game who had a dream of playing football. After he showed up for tryouts at the beginning of the season, the administration, teaching staff and coaching staff at Bay Shore worked together to ensure he could be part of the team. Members of the JV football team embraced Ramel, and helped him learn the sport and feel welcome on the team. When approached in the

days leading up to the game about running a special play, the Smithtown East coaching staff and players showed tremendous grace in agreeing to allow Ramel to have a shining moment at Bay Shore’s last JV home game of the season. As Ramel ran 50 yards down the field to score a touchdown, the two teams came together to show that some things are bigger than the game.

At the October 7th, Bay Shore Junior Varsity Football game against Smithtown East, there was a very special moment just after the second half started. Ramel Johnson, a sophomore at Bay Shore High School, was given the ball for the first play of the half. Ramel is a special education student with multiple learning and cognitive disabilities,

Service Project A Confirmation Service Project was recently completed and presented to Sgt. Major Fortenberry from Fort Drum, NY at the AMVET Post 76 in Bay Shore. The boys collected socks, foot powder, gel shoe inserts, books, DVDs, basketballs, footballs and soccer balls. Gold Star mom Dawn Esposito promised her son she would remember his Infantry unit and gave the boys this wonderful task to complete.

The boys are from Good Shepherd RC Church in Holbrook. The religion teacher attends Our Lady of Lourdes in West Islip. Hundreds of items and notes of appreciation for our military serving around the world were collected from the folks at Our Lady of Lordes and the surrounding area. Many residents of Maria Regina Nursing Home in Brentwood also wrote beautiful notes, as well as

residents of Sonrise Assisted Living in Holbrook and a children care center. The folks at Our Lady of Lourdes also contributed cash donations, which were used to purchase an Air Hockey Table sent directly to Lt. Colonel Wence at Fort Drum. Thanks to the AMVETS for hosting and to all who were so generous during this worthwhile task.

Getting in Touch Eager families converged on East Islip High School’s cafeteria on September 26th for the annual college fair, looking for information and insight from the more than 135 colleges in attendance. At the event, sponsored by the school’s guidance department, parents and students had an opportunity to meet the college representatives, ask questions, discuss the students’ plans for the future and pick up literature and other information that will help

each family decide which college is best for their child. St. Joseph’s College financial expert Gordon Rowe was on hand in the school’s library for two presentations on FAFSA and financial aid, while school counselor Jessica Pignataro discussed NCAA regulations for parents of students planning to play Division I or II college sports. Back in the cafeteria, counselors Chris Boehler and Nicole Vincenti met with parents and reps alike.

“As always, the parents go out of their way to be supportive, and this year they had a chance to meet so many colleges that may be of interest to their child in the future,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. “We encourage parents to keep in touch with the college representatives and to schedule a meeting with their counselors as soon as possible if they are in the process of filling out their child’s college application.”

When Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) staff, students, friends, and family signed in at the agency table during the Autism Speaks 3-mile walk held at Jones Beach they were offered a free water bottle. Students from Special Education Teacher’s Bayley, Girolamo, and Buchrieser at the Brookhaven Learning Center worked as a fine-

oiled team customizing over 300 bottles with the special labels. They “branded” the water bottles with the agency lighthouse logo. Each year members of Team ESBOCES look forward to getting the specially branded bottles because they know the students did all the work customizing them. Special Education Teacher James Buchrieser

said, “The students are taught that it’s important to donate their time for a good cause and to do community service work.” Bayley said, “The activity provided the students an opportunity to hone their vocational skills like assembling, following directions, and working independently. When they collaborate they practice their social and sharing skills.”

Fifth Avenue School families enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the school’s kitchen staff, Donna Hayward and Sheili Dasgupta. The Strega Nona spaghetti dinner was served by our kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Cheyne, Ms.

Rilke, Ms. Kavanagh, Ms. Russo and Ms. Glynn, while our Board of Education president, Guy Leggio, and Superintendent Joseph Bond assisted. The fun began with the puppet show and ended with the great book fair coordinated by the Parent

Faculty Association (PFA). Thank you to the PFA for sponsoring the entire evening so parents and scholars could be informed about the excellent kindergarten program at Fifth Avenue School.

VIGIL ATTENDED - On September 15th, Members of Troop 43 in Bay Shore participated in The POW/MIA Vigil hosted by Town of Babylon Supervisor Schaffer along with other members of the town board and several county officials, American Legion Post 1634 and the BOY Scouts of America. The scouts attended the opening flag ceremony and the empty seat service and then held vigil around the memorial through out the night.

KICKOFF PROGRAM - The Bay Shore UPK Family Engagement program hosted its first session of the school year. The program is aimed at helping English Language Learner families learn more about and become more comfortable with our school system. About 100 scholars and family members took part in the session, entitled Welcome to School. The program will host four more sessions throughout the fall.

DISTINGUISHED HONOR - Central Islip High School Senior, Ricardo Vallejo, will join his peers from across the United States to perform with the elite 2017 All-National Honors Ensemble. Sponsored by the National Association for Music Educators, the performance will take place in November at Walt Disney World.
