he Bay Shore Middle School Guidance Department kicked off its 6th Grade College Awareness Initiative by hosting its annual 6th Grade Scholar Shirt Day, an important Guidance tradition for over 14 years. The sixth graders and their teachers received a variety of colorful college T-shirts to be worn during the rally. Once seated, students were introduced to the program by Bay Shore Schools Director of Guidance Mr. Balsamo.

News12 Scholar-Athlete Bay Shore High School Senior Asia Stewart was recently featured on News12 and the News12. com website as their Scholar Athlete of the Month. Asia has been an integral part of the Bay Shore Girls Volleyball program since 2008, when, with her incredible athletic ability and lanky body, she stood out among the 100 young ladies fighting hard for a position on the team. She has gone on to earn All-League honors and be invited to the Suffolk Country Top 50 Player Tournament. Academically, Asia is ranked #1 in a class of 427 students. She is enrolled in an Honors Double Accelerated Program and the IB Program and sports an unweighted GPA of 99. She is a member of the National Honor Society and scored a 2080 on the SAT. Her coach, Ms. Stasia BeBonis, said, “Asia is the

epitome of student-athlete, as she strives to be her best in the classroom as well as on the court!” Like many scholarathletes, Asia is amazing at balancing her time. amazing singing voice, Asia has played the lead in numerous High School and Summer community musicals. She has also played Club Volleyball with LI United, run spring track, sung our national anthem at almost every school function and participated in over 20 school clubs and organizations. Coach DeBonis stated, “Asia is simply one of the student-athletes that a coach can NEVER forget. Asia will be sorely missed at Bay Shore High School when she graduates but we all can’t wait for the next goal she will accomplish, because once this girl sets her mind to something, she WILL achieve it!” The Bay Shore School District congratulates Asia and her family on this impressive achievement and wishes her the best of luck in the future.

Sibling Bragging Rights

On a recent Saturday, the SJB Crew Team competed at the Brickyard 5000. The day started out like any other, with the first few races running smoothly. As the day wore on, the wind picked up and the already rough Hudson River turned into a series of veritable tsunamis. My race, the Varsity Eight, the last heat of the day, was running right on time. The course had been shortened, and I was to compete head to head with my little brother. As we paddled out, I knew I could not let him win for the sake of bragging rights. We knew the water was rough, but we also knew we were ready. As we spun the boat and got underway, the crack of the oars hitting

the water signaled the start of our very brief rivalry. In that moment, I wanted nothing more than to beat my brother. After the first few hundred meters, we were ahead and gaining, but after a few minutes, that all changed. As we slightly altered our course, a huge wave crashed over our port side, flooding the boat. We were still afloat, but the added water weight made every stroke less productive. With every stroke, my brother’s boat was gaining and we were taking on more water. Coming into the final two hundred meters, we were still in the lead, but barely. It was close, but we had them by about a boat length. Then, our Cox had us suddenly stop rowing.

From the back of the boat, I couldn’t make out what she was saying. One by one, I saw the boys in front of me jump out of the boat and into the Hudson. Panicked, I jumped out too. Our boat had sunk, and we were floating in the middle of one of the roughest waters in New York. As we watched my brother swiftly finish, we realized that we had lost. Sure, it was on mere luck, but he was the one toting the Gold Medal. Embarrassed, we boarded the Haverstraw Fire Department’s boat. I had lost, to my brother no less. Even though I was sad we didn’t finish, I was happy at least one of the Cianciulli boys was bringing home the gold for SJB Crew.

On October 5th, 43 students and four teachers from Sct. Knuds Gymnasium, an upper secondary school in Odense, Denmark, arrived in Bay Shore where they will take part in a seven-day International Baccalaureate Program (IB) Student Exchange. Bay Shore High School IB students will host the Danish students while members of the Bay Shore IB faculty host the Danish teachers. Mr. Jon Nelson, Bay Shore Schools IB Director, explained the

educational goals of the program. “The stated mission of the IB organization is to promote peace through international understanding and a respect for the variety of cultures that exist in the world.” Over the course of the week, IB students and their Danish guests will take part in crosscultural lessons involving environmental science, American poetry, visual arts, and “Theory of Knowledge” in order to enhance global awareness

Forever An Original By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Albert Capraro, Lindenhurst High School Class of 1961 graduate, Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976 and personal designer of choice to none other than First Lady Betty Ford, passed away on October 8th, 2013 following a brief illness. I consider myself lucky to have made his acquaintance and privileged to have interviewed him for a proﬁle for this very column several years ago. Following are excerpts from my original piece, published October 11th, 2006 ... Mr. Capraro’s path to success began to take shape way back in high school while walking the halls of Lindy. His influences ranged from several members of the art department to his beloved guidance counselor, all of whom nurtured his already-outstanding talent for both fashion and film, even going so far

as to attend the “fashion shows” and “movie premieres” he would put on at his home. After graduating from the prestigious Parsons School of Design, Mr. Capraro landed his first job working with a French designer on Park Avenue. He then moved on to a position with noted designer Joberie, headquartered on Seventh Avenue - Fashion Avenue. From there, he catapulted to the opportunity of a lifetime, working with Oscar de la Renta - his “mentor” - with whom he flourished for eight glorious years. Mr. Capraro eventually started up his own label, of which his first collection was quite a success. As he dryly observed, “I was an ‘overnight’ sensation after ten years.” However, it was exactly this achievement which provided the necessary steppingstone from which there would be no turning back. seniors’ float featured Alvin from “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” the juniors’ was Sonic the Hedgehog, the sophomores’ was Rex the Dinosaur from Disney’s “Toy Story,” and the freshman class created a large orange pumpkin. The stands overlooking the football field were filled with enthusiastic fans cheering on the Buccaneers as they took on the Rocky Point Eagles. They were not to be disappointed; the Eagles proved to be no match for the hometown Bucs. The

Bucs were first to score and ended the game victorious over the Eagles with a final score of 35-20. As a team, Islip ran for 312 yards on 25 carries and improved their record to 3-1. to be questioned on many different levels to determine which would be best suited for the 20132014 CEO position,” said Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer. After a grueling two hours of interviews, Thea Tsolamitis was selected by a unanimous vote as this year’s virtual enterprise CEO.

On the same day, another five Business Academy students vied for the chance to be chosen as the virtual company’s chief financial officer. A tough interview process by the same panel, including questions on finance, spending and inventory purchasing, yielded another unanimous decision. Domenick Barbato was selected as the virtual firm’s CFO, overseeing the accounting department. According to Malinowitzer, the arduous selection process resulted in two additional leadership positions, as part of the Executive Administrative Committee. “The interviews were so electrifying that the panel strongly urged that two new executive positions be created that would work closely with the CEO and CFO,”

explained Malinowitzer. Frank Argenti was chosen as VE Connected’s chief operating officer, overseeing human resources, and Anthony Diesu was selected as the company’s chief strategic officer, overseeing sales and marketing. “I believe this powerful team of executives will take the new VE Connected firm to new heights, and will showcase their leadership and team collaboration in all their business decisions,” said Malinowitzer. “These students in the Business Career Academy have the skills needed to present their company’s strengths and ability to get the job done right every time. They are on their way to building a company that may leave the virtual world and become a real technology company.” The VE Connected students are being

Top Ten Announced

At East Islip High School’s traditional Senior Ranking Day morning event on October 4th, the top 10 students of the school’s Class of 2014 were recognized for their superlative academic achievements. The topranked student and future valedictorian of the Class of 2014 was announced as William Meehan, with an remarkable weighted GPA of 111.116. Ranking second was Grant Stroehlein, the future salutatorian, who scored a 107.252 weighted GPA. The remaining top 10 students, all in attendance and jubilant at their achievement, were Christina Giordanella in third place (106.66 weighted GPA), Leah Stevens in fourth (106.583), Maria Guadagno in fifth (105.663), Jackson Domenech in sixth (104.65), Troy Revello in seventh (104.461), William

Farrell in eighth (104.159), Max Gieraltowski in ninth (103.867), and ranked 10th, Andrew Dobkowski (103.033). The annual ceremony began shortly after 9 a.m., when the curious seniors and East Islip Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer convened in the guidance department’s conference room. After the rankings were read, the students were congratulated by Superintendent of Schools Linda J. Rozzi, Assistant Principal Nicholas Bilotti and the school’s guidance counselors. “We are so proud of these students who exhibit excellence in academics and an overall well-rounded educational platform,” said Rozzi. “We have no doubt that they will continue to excel after their high school years and beyond.” The ceremony was

followed by a celebratory bagel breakfast and excited telephone calls from the students to their proud parents. “These students have challenged themselves throughout their high school years and continue to take AP and honors courses,” said Malinowitzer. “They have shared the last four years in many of the same classes and have formed a mutual respect for one another. Today they were all very proud of each other and shared breakfast as they finally had some time to relax and enjoy the moment. CAPITAL ONE SCHOLAR ATHLETE - Asia Stewart, a senior at Bay Shore High School, was recently named a News 12 Long Island/Capital One Scholar Athlete. An all-league volleyball player and captain of the Lady Marauders, Asia was instrumental in the team’s making the second round of the Suffolk County playoffs. Asia shines in the classroom also. With a 99 (out of 100) unweighted average, she is in line to be valedictorian in June. She is passionate about the arts and has trained with the New York Opera. The lead vocalist in many school productions, she has earned awards from both the county and the state.

Cross Country Day

On Tuesday, September 24th, the 3rd Annual Bay Shore Cross-Country Day was held at Gardiner’s Park in Bay Shore. Students from Gardiner Manor (GMS), South Country (SCS), Bay Shore Middle School and Bay Shore High School all took part in the races. Claude Kasman, Bay Shore Schools’ Director of Health, Physical Education, and Athletics, served as each race’s official starter. South Country School came away the day’s big winner! In the Boys’ 5th grade race, South Country won, with Jake Rabin (SCS) winning the 1000m. Ryan Taabe, who won the 3rd grade race in 2011, finished a close second. South Country also won the Boys’ 4th grade race, taking nine of the first ten places. Nate Nagengast (SCS) edged Thomas Baratta (GMS),

following in the footsteps of their dads, both of whom were successful Bay Shore runners “back in the day.” Nate also won the 3rd grade race in 2012. South Country won the Girls’ 5th grade race, though Kiersten Farley (GMS) captured the 1000m crown. Kiersten also tied for 1st place last year, with Kate Cameron, in the 4th grade race. In the Girls’ 4th grade race this year, Gardiner Manor emerged victorious, with Gianna Ross (GMS) winning the 800 meter. Bay Shore Middle School competed in Bay Shore Cross-Country Day for the first time, running the mile. Lauren Hendricks (7th) edged Kassidy Metzger (7th) in the Girls’ race, while Ken Rubio (8th) won the Boys’ event. Meanwhile, Bay Shore’s varsity teams competed

against North Babylon in a league meet. The Bay Shore and North Babylon girls ran to a thrilling 28-28 tie. The tie-breaker came down to the sixth runner for each team. Cesia Andrade placed 10th overall for Bay Shore, while the North Babylon girl placed 15th, allowing Bay Shore to remain undefeated at 2-0. Caelyn Reilly placed 2nd to lead Bay Shore. In the Boys’ race, Bay Shore lost to a strong North Babylon team. SUPERINTENDENT VISIT - This September, Superintendent Dr. Karen Salmon visited Fifth Avenue School as part of her plan to bring special attention each month to the staff of one of Bay Shore’s seven schools. Dr. Salmon visited with Principal Charlotte Wilson, the Fifth Avenue staff and students and provided lunch for faculty and staff. Everyone was given the opportunity to “dress down” in jeans and invited to wear maroon and white or specific school shirts to express their school spirit.

Historic Trail Unveiled Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron today launched a brand new, interactive component to the current Town of Islip website which highlights the newly established Historic Islip Trail, as well as a corresponding brochure and map. Flotteron spearheaded the first-of-its-kind history project for Islip as part of his continuing effort to aggressively market the Town as a destination for both tourists and residents alike. Users of the new website component will enjoy a Google maps

feature from both their PC’s and mobile devices. The Councilman was joined by historians, historical society leaders, and Town officials as he introduced the Historic Islip Trail website and brochure to the public at a press conference held at the former Wereholme Weekes Estate – now home to the Seatuck Association – on South Bay Avenue in Islip. The Estate is also listed as one of more than 30 historic places of interest identified in the Islip Historic Trail. During the press conference,

Councilman Flotteron explained the origins of the project before giving a brief demonstration on how to navigate the website. “I am extremely proud of this interactive website and historic brochure. The project has been a labor of love over these past few years, but one in which I strongly believed because of its usefulness to residents and tourists,” said Flotteron. “As a parent, I often found there to be a lack of historical marketing material available when I was helping my children

with research. I knew information was out there, but it just wasn’t easily accessible to the general public. Flotteron’s frustrations prompted him to enlist the help of Bay Shore resident, Patrick Valdini, who was studying history and visual arts at the time, to create a historical map that would identify some of the most significant places of history within the Town. Islip Historian Jack Whitehouse also got involved, serving as both researcher and writer. “In Islip Town we are fortunate to have a

rich and diverse past, a remarkable historical narrative mirroring our nation’s progress from its earliest days to the present,” said Whitehouse. “The Historic Islip Trail website and map capture our most outstanding historic sites providing an easy reference to help us learn from our past.” Significant about the Historic Islip Trail, Flotteron said, is that it was created without using any taxpayer money. “I am grateful to both Patrick Valdini and Jack Whitehouse for the

countless hours that they contributed in making the Historic Islip Trail a reality. I also want to thank Rich Carpenter of ACT Communications for designing and printing the historic map as a donation to the Town.” The Historic Islip Trail can be found on the Town’s website at www. townofslip-ny.gov, by clicking on the Tourism and History on the Home Page. The map and brochure will be available at several public venues, including Islip Town Hall and Long Island MacArthur Airport.

Grand Slam Catch

East Islip Middle School student Steven Gieseler Jr. had quite a story to tell when he returned to school on the Monday after making a very special catch. While attending the September 20th New York Yankees baseball game against the San Francisco Giants, he retrieved a grand slam ball hit by third baseman Alex “A-Rod” Rodriguez. The dramatic grand slam, Rodriguez’s 24th in his career, broke a longstanding record set by legendary Yankee Lou Gehrig, coincidentally Gieseler’s all-time favorite baseball player. Gieseler, 12, is a well-rounded student at East Islip, where he

participates in intramurals and is a member of the school’s Book Club. As an accomplished trombone player, he was nominated for and attended New York State School Music Association and Suffolk County Music Educators Association festivals, performed in the middle school’s jazz band last year, and was a member of the advanced orchestra while attending Timber Point Elementary School. He also plays on a travel baseball team, and his passion for the sport was amply rewarded at the stadium that night. “It was the seventh inning of the game and A-Rod came up to bat,” recalled Gieseler, still on cloud nine. “My dad leaned over and told me to get ready, and next thing we knew, we heard a bat hit the ball and the ball coming our way. It hit someone a few rows in front of us, hit my dad and then rolled under the seats. After that it was instinctive. I dropped to my knees and scooped up the ball and covered it

with my body. Then my dad grabbed me and I took the ball and showed it to the crowd. Everyone was going wild and people were giving me high-fives.” The seventh-grader’s adventure was only beginning, as Yankees security staff quickly came to his side, congratulating him on the historic nature of the event and requesting the ball be returned to the new record-holder. “They said, ‘A-Rod would like the ball if you want to give it back to him,’” said Gieseler, who was offered the chance to meet the slugger and obtain an autographed bat and ball. “I decided to give it back, because A-Rod worked hard his whole life and beat the record, and he deserved the ball,” he added with an admirable display of maturity. After the game, Gieseler was escorted to a private press room, where he met Rodriguez. “A-Rod shook my hand and said, ‘Hey buddy, nice catch.’ He asked me where I was from, what grade I was in and if I played baseball.”

Sports Day Showcasing their good sportsmanship, athletic prowess and ability to work as a cohesive unit, the fifthgraders at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School participated in the school’s third annual Sports Day. “Today is about building community in the classroom,” said Principal Jeannette Feminella. “It’s a fun day that focuses on teamwork.”

During the event organized by physical education teachers Jason Orlick and Carrie Rittberg, the fifth-graders worked as a class to participate in various sports- and skillbased challenges, as well as team-building activities such as relay races, soccer shootouts and the everpopular tug-of-war. “There is a variety of events that the students can sign

up for, allowing them to participate in the activities in which they will be most successful,” explained Ms. Rittberg. When all of the activities were over and the points added up, Phillip Lally’s fifth-grade class was named winner of the third annual Sports Day. They will showcase the trophy in their classroom the rest of the year.
