Far from the average breast cancer foundation, Pink Aid’s mission is to help local underserved women survive treatment on both a financial and emotional level. Its goals are made possible through fundraisers such as its forthcoming Second Annual Pink Chair Luncheon and Fashion Show, which pays special attention to “local breast cancer warriors.” This unique event, which last year raised more than $225,000 from its 300 attendees in support of several local community grants, is being held at Mitchells|Marshs in Huntington on Thursday, October 15th at 11:30 a.m. The heart and soul of the Pink Chair fundraiser is the “Celebration of Life/ Warrior Fashion Show” featuring 17 brave Long Island women who have battled through treatment of the disease. In addition to taking to the stage in the latest Mitchells|Marshs fall fashions alongside their biggest supporters, these survivors share inspirational messages regarding their journeys. This year’s guest speaker is New York’s own Marisa Acocella Marchetto, a breast cancer survivor and award-winning cartoonist and graphic novelist whose work has appeared inThe New Yorker; The New York Times; Glamour and O, The Oprah Magazine. She recently released the graphic novel Ann Tenna and her previous Cancer Vixen novel was named one of Time magazine’s top ten graphic memoirs and was a finalist for the National Cartoonists Society “Graphic Novel of the Year.” She is also the founder and chair of the Marisa Acocella Marchetto Foundation at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Dubin Breast Center at Mount Sinai. Originally founded in Westport, Connecticut in 2010, Pink Aid funds breast cancer support services that provide transportation to treatment, child care and food cards, among other things, for local women in need while in treatment. This grant-based organization is the brainchild of Amy Katz, Amy Gross, Renee Mandis and Andrew Mitchell, whose family owns Mitchells of Westport in Connecticut and Mitchells|Marshs in Huntington, New York. Pink Aid Long Island was launched last year in recognition of the same need for free mammograms and compassionate care services for women battling breast cancer in our own local communities. “Andrew started this foundation with a group of women after hearing stories of women struggling to cover basic needs while trying to battle the disease,” explains Allison Mitchell, President of Pink Aid, Long Island. “My husband, Chris, who owns Mitchells|Marshs, has a special place in his heart for this particular cause as his mother and grandmother have both been affected by the disease. Having always paid special attention to philanthropic opportunities, particularly at the community level, the entire Mitchell family supports Pink Aid and the Pink Chair Fundraiser.” A limited number of sponsorship-level seating options for the Pink Chairs Luncheon and Fashion Show are still available by contacting the Pink Aid foundation at 844.PINK. INTERNATIONAL REPS - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently congratulated three athletes from Grand Champions International Karate School in Bay Shore for being chosen to the national karate team. Joseph Musemeci, Adam Rotbart and Logan Witte had such a strong 2015 season of competition that they were selected to represent their country at the highest levels of international karate. Their instructor, Sensei Mostafa Elrakabawy, arranged a special ceremony to recognize the three athletes for the hard work and accomplishments.

Following the success of its three previous events, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is holding its 2015 East End Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival on Saturday, October 17th at the Village Green (intersection of Main Street and Mill Road) in Westhampton Beach. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The 5K walk kicks off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. After

the Walk, participants are invited to return to the Village Green for a fall-themed lunch buffet, entertainment and raffles at 11:45 a.m. Participants who raise $100 or more will receive a 2015 Walk lunch tote and a 2015 Walk T-shirt. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the

oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not

simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

Student Spotlight THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI: SCHOOL OF MY DREAMS BY: JORDAN CIANCIULLI, SENIOR, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL

As a high school senior, there is no issue more relevant to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.

I can see myself at The U. This is why I tried really hard to make myself stand out as an applicant. Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions, was happy to answer my questions about applying, and calm my anxiety. He informed us that, even though my grades and standardized test scores are pretty competitive, the holistic admissions process puts an emphasis on the applicant as a whole. With any luck, I’ll be able to put this advice to good use. After touring many competitive schools and narrowing my options, the University of Miami kept floating to the top of the

pile. I plan on touring the University of Miami again this weekend, just to further my desired transition into a Miami Hurricane. I’ve picked my institution of higher education, and now I can only hope that they pick me. I’m excited about the possibility of spending the next two years alongside my brother at one of the best colleges in the country, and I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at my dream school. My past has shaped me in to the person I am today, but the University of Miami will make me the man I hope to become in the future.

East Islip High School varsity football coach Sal Ciampi Jr. reached a very special milestone, earning his 100th career coaching victory. The magic number came with a 21-6 win on September 18th over host Islip, with his father, legendary East Islip football coach Sal Ciampi, watching from

the sidelines. The Ciampis are now the only father and son in Suffolk County football history to both win 100 games. “It was great to do it with my father there, and be the only father and son combo, as well as the youngest person to reach 100 wins,” said Ciampi. “It felt good to reach an accomplishment like that.”

Ciampi had not given the pending achievement much thought until media brought it to his attention. “When you start reaching milestones like this, you feel old, but reaching milestones isn’t why I took this job,” he said. “I still enjoy being around kids and pushing them to achieve things they thought they couldn’t.” Junior lineman Kyle Nunez said, “I think Coach Ciampi absolutely deserves it. He works harder than most coaches on Long Island. He’s happy for himself, and happy for us.” The 3-0 Redmen, who earned the Suffolk County Division II championship last year, are off to a flying start after moving to Division III. “We have a long way to go,” Ciampi said. “But so far, so good.”

Future Med Student

For East Islip High School student Phoebe Tedesco, a summer job incident proved inspiring for her and life changing for a Long Island grandfather. Tedesco was hired this past summer as a lifeguard at the Bay Shore Marina. On August 1st, Tedesco was called to duty and had to respond to an

immediate crisis at Benji Beach. While observing a man in the water with his grandchildren, she noticed him collapse. A team of 10 lifeguards, including Tedesco, jumped into the water and pulled the man out. They tried to revive him with an AED machine, but it proved ineffective, and the lifeguards

began doing CPR and administering oxygen. Emergency medical technicians arrived, stabilizing the man’s neck and connecting him to an IV unit. On her last day of summer work, Tedesco and her fellow lifeguards were paid a surprise visit by the man they had helped, who thanked each of them for saving his life. On September 8th, she received a certificate of recognition from the Islip Town Board. The event provided inspiring, and Tedesco, now attending East Islip’s Medical and Health Technology Career Academy, plans to pursue a career in the medical field. “Phoebe was very proud to have been there that day,” said Career Academy Director Israel Malinowitzer. Work Ethic Earns Honors A total of seven stellar students from East Islip High School – seniors Meaghan Coles, Emily Fishman, Harrison Gieraltowski, Julia Rizzo, Joseph Teknus and Kyra Walls, and junior Isabella Pizzuto – were named AP Scholars with Distinction for 2015 by the College Board, along with 16 graduates from the Class of 2015. To be recognized as an AP Scholar with Distinction, students must receive an average score of at least 3.5 on their exams and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. One student from last year’s graduating class, Lauren Farrell, was also named a 2015 National AP Scholar, the highest level of achievement, requiring an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken

and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program recognizes several different award levels for outstanding college-level student academic achievement, displayed via AP courses and exams. The exams are graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with a score of 3 or higher qualifying students for college credit. A total of 69 East Islip students were AP Scholars for 2015. Ten students were named 2015 AP Scholars with Honor, including current seniors Nicholas Carney, Melissa Hasse, Therese Mittleman, Shannon Ransom and Will Reed, as well as five graduates. For this level, the average score needed is 3.25 on all exams and 3 or higher on four or

more of those exams. A total of 36 students earned recognition as AP Scholars, receiving scores of 3 or higher on three or more exams, including current seniors Sarah Commisso, Santino Dunham, Ashley Karlin, James Kelly, Faith Kern, Asma Malik, Brianna Maye, Dennis McCann, Karli Pipitone, Caleb Shulman, Ryan Smith, Charlie Tarazona and Megan Tohill, along with 23 graduates. “All of these successful students should be praised for their superior work ethic over the course of their high school careers,” said Israel Malinowitzer, director of guidance. Over 50 Fair a Success The Over 50 Fair once again had a successful run on September 27th at the Melville Marriott. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes, some taught by local and national celebrities, covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the fullest. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island, and it once again had new features for its attendees. “Every year, our single guests request a way to meet other singles. This year, 7 in Heaven Singles Events facilitated this interaction in our new Singles Lounge, which had a seating area and opportunities to meet other singles,” explained East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director. Chef Jonathan of Fox TV’s hit show MasterChef Season 6 and Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3 did cooking demonstrations as well as “meet and greets.” Several beauty queens were in attendance, including the newly

crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie. Edith Jason, age 80, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, taught a yoga class. Comedians Mark Brier and Howard Newman entertained at separate performances. In addition, there were a group psychic reading, reiki class, iPad tips, saving for retirement, travel, and health topics such as sleep apnea, cardiology, and podiatry. This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer Generation during the six years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products they find appealing. The free opportunities this year include valet parking, waxing, and health screenings such as video otoscope and blood pressure screenings. Sheila Murphy of Babylon summed up the event. “Much needed info. Can’t wait for the next event. I will spread the world. Excellent event!” The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local

non-profit that helps Long Island’s needy, raised over $400 and 117 pounds of food.
