Peace ‘Whirled’ At Wing In recognition of the International Day of Peace, kindergarten and first grade students at Wing Elementary School in the Islip School District participated in the annual Pinwheels for Peace Project
on Sept. 21. The students imagined ‘whirled’ peace through the decoration of their own pinwheels. Principal Dr. Michael Giachetto reported that the students wore white clothing to symbolize
peace, discussed respect and kindness in their classrooms and decorated pinwheels, which were displayed on the bulletin board in the auditorium’s lobby.
Rules For A Safe Journey To The Classroom
Bus safety is a main priority of the Islip School District. In making sure that students make a secure journey from home to the classroom, all kindergarten students received mandated bus safety training at the start
of the school year. After each class loaded a bus, Suffolk Transportation Services drivers discussed the rules of riding and disembarking. Driver Marcia Thompson explained that bus safety begins at the bus stop
where students should remain alert and at a safe distance from the road. The students also learned that they must always wear a mask, should respect peers and should sit until it is their time to unload.

Just in time for the new school year, hearing technology innovator Widex USA hosted a virtual school supply drive to ensure that every student in Long Island’s Brentwood School District — regardless of background — has the tools they need to succeed. Running from Monday, Aug. 16 through Wednesday, Aug. 25, Widex employees distributed a variety of school supplies to the highest-need children throughout the district, including students that are homeless or in transitional housing situations. “We are honored to renew our commitment to the students of the Brentwood district,” said
Søren Hvidberg Nielsen, President of Widex USA. “I’d like to thank every Widex employee who donated because it’s their generosity that made this all happen. They truly represent our dedication to helping the Long Island community in any way we can.” Company employees ultimately donated over one thousand muchneeded items including composition books, binders, notebooks, pencils, pens, scissors, rulers and so much more. “I was able to put together at least 50 backpacks for students in our district who need them most – and still have plenty
of supplies left over,” said Michele Stylianos, School Counselor for the Brentwood School District. “Thanks to the generosity of Widex, no student in our district will go without the learning essentials.” This is the second year Widex has held a drive for the Brentwood district — which contains 17 schools and over 17,000 students. This year, the event had to be held virtually because of COVID-19. In addition to its work with Brentwood, for the last two years, Widex has “adopted” multiple highneed families in the area to provide gifts around the holidays. The company will be doing so again this holiday season.
Teachers Federal Credit Union Supports LI Community with Family Service League Helping Long Island neighbors is at the heart of Teachers Federal Credit Union, and Teachers is proud to support Family Service League, a shining light in the community, and their 2021 Walk for Wellness. Family Service League is a grassroots social service agency that provides security, support, and empowers more than 50,000 of the Long Island community’s most vulnerable to mobilize their strengths and

Islip Church Held Food Drive, Kids Learned Joy Of Giving Back
They worked hard while bringing joy, energy and enthusiasm. The East Islip Girl Scout Troop #2425, together with other kids, James Pearsall, Breanna Questel, Reyna Boyd and twins Thomas and Lynnea Martinez, joined adults to sort, pack and collect food donations for God’s Provision.
Thousands of donations came from both parishioners and nonparishioners alike. There were even people who drove down the street, looked to see what was being done, stopped to talk to the organizers and ran to the supermarket to make donations. All the kids REALLY got
into the spirit and worked hard by sorting, packing, collecting and waving and showing signs to draw people in! The next food drive at St. Mark’s Episcopal in Islip is scheduled for Saturday, November 6 from 9AM to 1PM.

Bringing Awareness For Mental Health Through Art Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron helped bring awareness to the issues Veterans face such as PTSD, mental illness, and FOOD DRIVE - Mother Christina van Liew, Interim Priest-in-Charge, St. Mark’s homelessness recovery. In collaboration Episcopal Church, Islip with Laurea, Thomas and Lynnea Martinez. the Islip Arts Council (IAC) hosted an art exhibit Their Story curated by Veterans Sean Fitzthum and Dave Rogers at the IAC satellite location at Westfield Mall featuring the work of local Veteran artists. This project included resources for the Veterans through the combination of art, the movie “Walk
With Frank”, which will be shown in the Westfield Mall parking lot on a 52foot screen on the rain date Thursday, October 21 at 7:30pm. The resource center displayed in the courtyard area in the Mall featured the services of Good Samaritan Hospital and local Veteran community organizations such as Walk With Frank Foundation, Warrior Ranch Foundation, United Veteran’s Beacon House, Inc., Project9line and

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. This non-profit is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs. As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island.

East Islip HS Celebrates Inclusion During Start With Hello Week

East Islip High School recently devoted a week to exploring the Sandy Hook Promise’s Start With Hello Week, an age-appropriate program geared toward students of all ages that stresses the importance of positivity with various themes and events, each day focusing on inclusivity and anti-bullying. The week at the high school began on Sept. 20, with a visit from Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department representatives, who discussed the “See Something, Say
Something” program with students during physical education classes. The representatives spoke about the importance of being vigilant and reaching out to fellow classmates, and raised awareness about social isolation. Throughout the week, over 75 students assisted in hanging up positive banners, posters and sticky notes on lockers around the building, and the National Art Honor Society created an Instagram picture board for students to take selfies with during lunch periods.
“This past year and a half, students all over have lived through so much,” Assistant Principal Jean Marie D’Aversa said. “The Start With Hello program teaches them how our strength lies in celebrating each one of our differences, not our similarities. If we can begin this year fostering a mindset of inclusion and acceptance, then we can start on a path where we grow together as a building and we come back stronger than ever.”

Historical Society of Islip Hamlet On Thursday, Oct. 28th, the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet hosts author Amy Folk and her presentation on her book “Murder on Long Island”. Bathed in autumn colors, Flowerfields Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, one-of-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will compete in classed judging; trophies will be granted in

October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual Suffolk County Community College’s Kids’ Cottage child care facility on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood has been awarded a highly competitive Federal fouryear Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant of nearly $445,000 to help meet a critical need for high quality, affordable child care for eligible studentparents. “The need for highquality and reliable child care is one of the basic needs that can potentially block parents from accessing college,” said Suffolk County Community College President Edward Bonahue. “This grant directly addresses that need and allows parents with young children to
take advantage of the education and workforce training opportunities Suffolk offers.” “We have a highquality program that goes beyond child care,” said Kids’ Cottage Director Vickie Calderon, who has been recognized by the National Coalition for Campus Children’s Centers for her history of work in early education, her commitment to excellence in teaching, and her leadership and positive impact on early care and education. Calderon said there is a waiting list at the Kids’ Cottage and the CCAMPIS grant funds can be used to expand and offer services to more parents and their children. Community College are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and provide comprehensive, developmentally appropriate early childhood education programs for children between the ages of six weeks and five years of age. The centers are open to children of college students, faculty, staff, Suffolk County employees, and community residents. Grief Support Workshop Series Pinelawn Memorial Park, in collaboration with COPE Foundation, offers a free, monthly online grief support workshop series to help families on their journey of grief after a loved one has passed. led by Dr. Heidi Horsley, an international grief expert, licensed psychologist and social worker, and bereaved sibling. She is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Open to Hope Foundation and hosts the award-winning Open to Hope cable television show and podcast.
