In honor of Submariners who gave their lives for their country , the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. (USSVI) celebrates Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week. November 7th through 13th, Note: The (SS) is a military specialty designator, signifying a sailor is “Qualified in Submarines” Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) Week is celebrated annually during the week that includes Veterans Day, and provides a special period where Submarine Veterans from USSVI Bases (chapters) bring comfort and joy to sick children. The USSVI has over 13,000 members in 164 Bases in the US. Year round, US Submarine Veterans visit children in Children’s Hospitals, Cancer Hospitals, Hospices, Child

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is clanging the alarm with the message, “Don’t wait – check the date!” - the 2016 theme of the annual Fire Prevention Week, October 9th through 15th promoting the importance of replacing smoke alarms every 10 years. “Functioning smoke alarms reduce by half the risk of dying in a home fire, so it is extremely important to make sure they’re working properly”, said FASNY President Kenneth Pienkowski. President Pienkowski noted that families utilizing a 10-year-life smoke alarm in the home can remove a potentially high-danger component of human error from the reliability of alarms. Star Island Yacht Club & Marina has rescheduled its 7th annual Striped Bass Tournament in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew, which yesterday made landfall in Haiti as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour. Determined to be the most powerful storm in the Atlantic since 2007, Matthew’s potential impact on the United States is still being evaluated. Museum to Be Built Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently joined Senator Tom Croci and other elected officials at a press conference where Senator Croci announced plans to construct a Navy SEAL Museum and United States Naval Sea Cadet Training Facility. The Museum will be named after Suffolk County’s iconic national war hero, LT. Michael P. Murphy. Also during the press conference, Senator Croci announced a $400,000.00 State grant he secured for Suffolk County that has been earmarked specifically for the Museum. Funding for the construction, maintenance and operation of the Museum will be the responsibility of the LT. Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum Foundation. Senator Tom Croci said, “I am so very proud that this community will be the home of the first Navy Seal Museum in the northeast, paying tribute to a local hero and a true patriot, LT. Michael Murphy, as well the Naval Special Warfare Community and its significant role in our nation’s security.” “We are grateful to Senator Croci for securing the grant that will make this museum possible”, commented Islip Town

Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “This museum will be a treasure in our Town, and will remind visitors of the sacrifices that have been made by the members of the Special Forces community. While we can never repay them, we can honor the heroism and legacy of Lt. Michael Murphy, and all those who serve our nation.” The museum will honor the ongoing mission and legacy of the U.S. Navy SEALs. An additional focus will be to continue the commitment to support the Sea Cadets program by utilizing a portion of the museum as a training facility. This museum will be the first of its kind in the entire northeast and only the third such museum in the country. “The Murphy family is thrilled with the first ever Navy SEAL Museum in the Northeast named after our son, Michael”, said Dan Murphy, Father of LT Michael Murphy. closely with the SEAL teams in Afghanistan, looked on this project as a labor of love and is supporting this project in both name and monetary support. This Museum/ Sea Cadet Training facility will be a reality because of Senator Croci’s hard work, support and commitment to our men and women in the armed forces.” “Our hometown hero, Lt. began with event cochairman Steve Fuoco’s sister, Beth Ann FuocoSantos, who attended the camp between the ages of 3 and 21. The Fuoco family established the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival in 1969 to raise funds for the camp, to ensure that people like Beth Ann are provided the opportunity to have memorable and educational summer experiences. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity and independence in a safe and supportive educational environment. The Fuoco family, alongside The Rotary Club of Patchogue, hosted the 47th annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival at Bellport Country Club on Thursday, September 15th. Funds raised from the tournament and dinner will benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck, a year-long respite for children and young adults with physical and mental disabilities. More than $1.4 million has been raised by the Golf Feastival to support the camp since its inaugural event in 1969. This year’s Feastival featured 152 golfers at the golf tournament, many of whom golfed together in teams. The consequent cocktail hour, buffet-style Italian dinner, tournament awards, raffle and silent auction was attended by 180 guests. Participants in the daylong golf outing partook in a variety of “Food Feastivals,” for which the event is named. Italian “Feastival Stands” lined the course with options such as meatballs and clams, pasta and wine, sausage

The Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum Committee announced today that due to ﬁnancial constraints the Lighthouse Tower and Keepers dwelling will not be lit this year during the holiday season. This of course does not mean the mariners beacon atop the Lighthouse tower which has warned sailors since 1797. Dick White, Chair of the Committee, stated, “When we took over the Lighthouse in 1986, we committed ourselves to the care and maintenance of the now 220 year-old Long Island icon. We have signiﬁcant ongoing and future costs ahead of us in repair and maintenance of not only the Lighthouse Tower and Museum, but

the revetment holding up the bluff on which our beautiful beacon stands. The Montauk Lighthouse is a self-funding notfor-proﬁt entity, relying solely on our wonderful patrons to support our site, tours and operations. The annual cost of just lighting the Lighthouse for the holiday season is about $50,000. Our ﬁrst responsibility is to the care and upkeep of “The Light.” We would wholeheartedly welcome a kind benefactor to step forward before November 1st with the amount necessary to pay for the lighting. Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

FIRST RESPONDERS HONORED - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the 2016 Suffolk Regional Emergency Medical Service Council Awards ceremony.
