Calling all Long Island educators! The deadline to submit an application for NEFCU’s “Funding Your Ideas” (FYI) Teacher Grant Program is fast approaching. Educators across Long Island are encouraged to apply by October 31st for this grant that supports innovative classroom projects designed to enhance the student learning experience. NEFCU, a leading credit union serving all Long Island’s banking needs, has already awarded nearly $100,000 in grant money since the program began in 2004. “In our 75 year history, NEFCU has always valued the local educators that have helped to inspire our future leaders,” said Valerie Garguilo, Vice President of Marketing & Community Relations for NEFCU. “The FYI Teacher

Deadline Approaching Grant Program provides funds to teachers so it’s possible for them to motivate their students in an innovative, impactful and lasting way.” The FYI Teacher Grant Program is open to NEFCU members who are certified teachers within grades pre-K-12 in a Nassau or Suffolk County private, public, or parochial elementary or high schools. The NEFCU Teacher Grant Committee of the Board of Directors awards the FYI Teacher Grants once per year in December. Educators can receive a grant of up to $250. The deadline to apply is October 31st, 2013. Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic

delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even

the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between. And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing. Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety. Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

On Sunday, September 29th, the Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce and BID organized its second “Cash Mob” to support one of Bay Shore’s Main Street treasures, Serious Chocolate, in Bay Shore’s downtown. On a gloriously sunny day, residents, fans and supporters of Bay Shore assembled on Main Street, committed to spending ten dollars in cash at the store. Chamber President

Donna Periconi introduced this new initiative last year to boost Bay Shore’s economy. The first “Cash Mob” was organized to support the once newly restored Ace Hardware and Variety Store. Mrs. Periconi explained, “Throughout our country, communities are banding together to organize ‘Cash Mobs’ to help small, local businesses survive in these tough economic times. Besides offering financial

support, these events give residents an opportunity to show a chosen business how important it is to the community. We can have fun while doing a good thing.” Having notched two successful events, the Chamber will hopefully plan another “Cash Mob” in the New Year. Many thanks to all who came out to support this successful event.

This September, Gardiner Manor School kicked off the new school year with a successful week-long Book Fair. School librarians Ms. Darch and Ms. Smyth, with assistance from Ms. Abrams, facilitated the fair which raised $1,275 for the library. These funds will be used to purchase books and prizes for the GMS Reading Counts Program. Reading Counts

is a software program available to all Gardiner Manor students during library class. They are encouraged to participate in the program by reading designated Reading Counts books and taking a short quiz afterwards. If successful, students are awarded points. The more books they read, the more points they earn. For every 50 points a student earns, they are awarded a

paperback book of their choice and a prize. Prizes include ribbons, reading bracelets, pins, medals and T-shirts. In addition, students’ names are read on the morning announcements. Each year, the library awards more than 400 books and prizes. GMS asks parents to encourage their children to read each and every day.

The Lupus Alliance of LIQ was established in 1955, is a 501c3 non-profit based on Long Island, and is the only locally based agency that offers services to those living with lupus, and their families, in the Nassau, Suffolk and Queens areas. Unlike larger non-profits, the Alliance does not receive large government or corporate grants; instead they have always relied heavily on the donations of individuals whose lives are touched by Lupus. Without the dedication of these people who collect donations year round and attend the WalkAlong for Lupus every year, the Alliance would not be able to provide the support services that are so desperately needed by families in our local area. Kindergarten and second-grade students at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School honored the International Day of Peace in September with Pablo Picasso-themed projects. Directed by RCK art teacher Dana Belfiore, the kindergartners created their own versions of Picasso’s 1958 lithograph “Flowers for Peace” while

the older children drew and colored his famous “Dove of Peace.” The projects served to spur related readings and discussions in the art classroom. “My second-graders read about Picasso’s interest in creating a peaceful world through his art and fascination with drawing birds,” explained Belfiore. “The kindergartners

discussed the reasons why you would give flowers to someone and how little acts of kindness can help promote peace.” The International Day of Peace, unofficially known as World Peace Day, is dedicated to the concept of peace, specifically the absence of war and violence. It has been observed every September 21st since 1982.

No matter how you slice it, picking a college is the culmination of your high school career. As a senior, the pressure associated with selecting where I will spend the next four years of my life is truly right around the corner. I’m almost done with all of my tests, essays and applications, but even if I receive that acceptance letter in the mail, how do I know where I truly want to attend? After acceptances, denials and waitlists, a student is still left with the daunting task of finding out which college truly fits him or her. There are many factors that play into choosing

where you would be the most happy. Are you an athlete? A study freak? A party animal? Countless variables can have an impact on both your social and psychological well being. Before you enroll in that Ivy League school, take a look around, because you may feel the urge to select a school that actually wants you. For instance, if a school of lesser prestige is offering you a scholarship, you might feel the urge to go there instead of a top tier college. Before you enroll anywhere, make it a point to visit! If you can, check out the prospective

college because, for all you know, you could hate it. If visiting is not an option, at least talk with a current student or alumni. No one can give you more insight than someone who is already in that situation. Attend a College Night! On October 2nd, St. John’s hosted its annual College Fair, with nearly 200 present. Showing up to one of these not only gives you a broader glance at many universities, but the up-close and personal time with an Admissions officer can be priceless. Feel it out, because this decision is undoubtably the most important one you will make thus far.

East Islip High School’s Department of World Languages hosted a successful trip to sunny Italy this past June, led by teachers Marylou Ferrieri and Joseph Tursi. The school’s students of the Italian language enjoyed an exciting nineday tour as they visited the famed cities of Rome, Florence, Venice, Pisa, Verona, Assisi and Orvieto. In addition to practicing their Italian skills, the

high schoolers enjoyed romantic gondola rides, visited Romeo and Juliet’s balcony, toured the Vatican museums, visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and walked through the Roman Colosseum. They also had the chance to experience the taste of authentic Italian cuisine and gelato. “Everyone on the trip had such a great time,” said Tursi, noting that a parent of one of the students recently told him, “We’re

ecstatic that our daughter went on this trip.” Both Tursi and Ferrieri received significant positive feedback from students, faculty and parents. “With successful trips to both France and Italy in the past two school years,” Tursi said, “our department hopes to continue organizing trips abroad to help the students of East Islip enhance their language learning.”

East Islip High School’s 2013-2014 video production class kicked off the new school year with a special multi-class endeavor. As part of an ongoing effort to teach the new video production students how to use the studio, technology education teacher James Connell invited another technology education class to join his students for a live talk show titled “East Islip’s Talk TV.” With the help of Harold Kench’s graphic

communications class, the high school’s studio was filled with a live audience who watched the program from the studio floor. After the presentation was over, Kench’s class was actively involved in critiquing the efforts of the video production students, providing valuable feedback to help improve their craft as the year unfolds. “This activity is typically done early in September in an effort to provide the students with the

experience of filming with an actual live studio audience,” explained Connell. “Talk TV” serves as a precursor to later, larger events like “Embers Coffee House,” another live event filmed in the studio where students invite individuals from around the school to perform, including guitarists, poets and other acts. William worked the past two summer seasons as a camp counselor for the Town of Islip. William has also been active in sports during his school years in the East Islip School District, including playing linebacker on the Varsity Football Team, soccer at the East Islip Soccer Club, and baseball with the Town of Islip. Community Service has been important to William as he has logged 63.3 community service hours, including helping at a soup kitchen in Brentwood, volunteering at South Side Hospital and various boy community service projects. William is the son of Patricia and Kevin Farrell of East Islip. Kevin is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 205. William has a sister, Lauren Farrell, who is in the 11th grade in East Islip High School.

William Joseph Farrell successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in March, officially making him the 44th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River. William’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Sunday, November 3rd, starting at 1 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timberpoint Road, East Islip, NY 11730. William Farrell is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle”, William has served the troop as Assistant Patrol Leader and Den Chief for Cub Scout Pack 205, East Islip, NY. William is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. William has also earned the following BSA Awards: Emergency Preparedness, Kayaking, and SCUBA. William has had many unique Scouting experiences, including being a member of the

contingent to the West Point Military Academy Camporee, Troop 205 trips to Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Gettysburg and Boston. William has also attended summer camp at Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for five summer seasons. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 Merit Badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major Service Project for the Community. The Service Project that William conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the design and development of the beautiful outdoor team photo area at the East Islip Soccer Club, East Islip, NY, that has and continues to be used by the Club and teams season after season. As William reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “My time in Troop 205 has given me access to some of the best times of my life. I have been to Summer Camp at Camp Wakpominee for five Summers and have made great friends. Many of the merit badges I earned there have given me life-long skills.” William is a Senior at

Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick, Chair of the Legislature’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee, recently met with Kathryn Curran, executive director of the Suffolk County Historical Society, to discuss the Society’s goals and upcoming projects. Since it was first settled in 1640, Suffolk County has experienced a rich history. The Society is working diligently to establish itself as one of the major anchors for downtown Riverhead by positioning itself as a bookend of the planned main Street cultural corridor linking the other art venues, theater, historic district and other points of interest. “The Suffolk County Historical Society contains a wealth of history, documents, artifacts and collections. It is a gem in the Riverhead community and a must

visit destination for all of Long Islanders,” said Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick The Suffolk County Historical Society was gifted with a Mobile Museum from the American Museum of Natural History. The Winnebago is handicapped accessible and outfitted with handson archeological and local cultural displays. It is able to travel to schools throughout Suffolk County and has a teacher on board to educate the students.

The Society’s upcoming exhibit, Back to the Future, features contemporary artists’ work, which reflects elements of the Society’s permanent collection. The show will run from October 18th through November 23rd. Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families. Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous

DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined forces with Music For

Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks

ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. The 17th Annual FTK Carnival welcomed the fall season and provided the children of the East Islip School District with three days of games, rides and snacks on the grounds of Timber Point Elementary School in East Islip, with proceeds helping to support important and enriching school activities. The festivities began on September 20th with a special meeting of East Islip’s Board of Education in the library at Timber Point, where the Board announced that the For the Kids Foundation had donated $60,000 to the East Islip School District for 2013-2014, a gift that will fund this year’s high school and middle school musicals. “FTK was able to do this because of the

people of the East Islip community, who continue to support our carnival, golf outing and Black Tie Gala,” said Nancy Goldfader, FTK’s president. Moving outdoors, the carnival’s opening ceremony began with the presentation of flags by a local Scout troop, who led the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Chorus and orchestra performances by select students from Timber Point and the district’s three other elementary schools (Connetquot, John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney) followed, along with speeches from Goldfader and Linda J. Rozzi, the district’s new superintendent of schools. Also in attendance were other district

On September 21st, The Rotary Club of Bay Shore hosted its 2nd Annual Fall Kickoff Celebration Fundraiser at the former estate of Hawthorne (Happy) Scully, now operated by the Seatuck Environmental Association in Islip (www.seatuck.org). The event, which raised over $5,500 to help fund various local literacy programs, Oikocredit micro-financing loans and Rotary International’s “Eradicate Polio” program, was attended by more than 130 enthusiastic guests. A live auction saw participants bidding on a private Long Island Ducks box for 20 people, donated by Ducks owner Frank Boulton, and a 50/50 raffle awarded one individual $600 in cash. Additional winners took home baskets filled with wonderful prizes such as a Coach bag, wine and fine liquor, and passes for local vineyard tours. Recently retired Bay Shore High School Music Teacher Ted Scalzo, who was honored at the event, spoke about the good work Rotary does in the community and

expressed his gratitude to both Bay Shore Schools and his wife for allowing him the gift of working with so many amazing students over his 35 year tenure. Guests also enjoyed live music by jazz trio Monk for President. Congratulations to The Rotary Club of Bay Shore’s Planning Committee, headed by Club President Mark Velapoldi and Vice President Thomas Kain, on an extremely successful event.
