Coping With Stress During Uncertain Times

in average reported stress since the survey began in 2007. Pandemic stress mixed with existing stress may require additional coping techniques. • Turn negative thinking into positive thinking. The occasional pep talk can help people manage their stress. Rather than saying “Everything is going wrong,” tell yourself “I can handle this, I have done it before.” Find the silver lining in situations and they may not feel so stressful. • Take things one step at a time. Getting ahead of yourself by looking too far into the future can compound stress. Focus on the here and now. Make to-do lists and take situations as they come day by day or hour by hour. Situations are often ﬂuid, so worrying about something that is weeks away is often fruitless. • Exercise regularly. Find opportunities to exercise. The Mayo Clinic says exercise in almost any form can act as a stress reliever. Physical activity can release your feel-good endorphins and distract you from daily worries.

Exercise also can mimic the effects of stress, helping to condition the body to its effects and buffer the cardiovascular, digestive and immune systems from negative effects. • Seek out social support. Chances are someone you know also is experiencing increased stress loads. Find the time for conversation, video chats or safe, socially distanced meetups with friends. Each person can share their unique frustrations and collectively you can work through the stress. • Don’t drown in perfectionism. Trying to be mistake-free can trigger anxiety and stress. Being perfect is impossible and everyone makes mistakes. According to Psych Central, mistake-making can lead to growth and experience, while perfectionism may staunch growth because a person is too afraid to take chances. Not every decision you make will be ideal, but each is a learning experience. Stress is something most people come up against in their daily lives, perhaps more so than ever this year, but stress can be wrangled and minimized.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Immune System Strong The immune system is a powerful component of the human body. The immune system recognizes when viruses, bacteria and other foreign invaders enter or compromise the body, and then takes action to prevent illnesses from taking over. The average person can help his or her immune system do its job more effectively by making the immune system as strong as it can be. Harvard Medical School says that diet, exercise, age, and psychological stress may affect immune system response. Certain lifestyle choices can promote a strong immune system. • Get adequate sleep. Doctors believe sleep and immunity are closely tied. A study of 164 healthy adults published by the National Institutes of Health found those who slept fewer than six hours each night were more likely to catch a cold than people who slept for more than six hours. Aim for adequate rest each night to keep your body in top form. • Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables supply the powerhouse antioxidants that are essential for protecting a body against free radicals. Free radicals may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. Serve fruits and/or vegetables with every meal to ensure you’re getting enough antioxidant-rich foods. • Consume fiber and fermented foods. Fiber can help feed the gut microbiome, which is linked to a robust immune system. The microbiome also

may prevent harmful pathogens from entering the body through the digestive tract. Data also suggests that eating more fermented foods can further strengthen and populate healthy bacteria in the gut. • Exercise regularly. Aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day, advises the American Heart Association. Thirty minutes of exercise each day can go a long way toward keeping the body healthy. The U.S. National Library of Medicine says physical activity may help ﬂush bacteria out of the lungs and airways. Exercise causes changes in antibodies and white blood cells. These antibodies and white blood cells circulate rapidly, so they may

detect illnesses earlier than they would if you do not exercise. Body temperature also rises during exercise, which could naturally prevent bacteria from growing. • Try to minimize stress. According to Simply Psychology, when people are stressed, the immune system’s ability to fight off antigens is reduced, making people more susceptible to infections. The stress hormone corticosteroid can suppress the effectiveness of the immune system. Limiting stress through meditation and breathing exercises, or trying to remove stressors from one’s life, may help. A healthy immune system is vital to fending off or recovering from illness.

Stress can affect people’s lives at any moment. Some say that a certain measure of stress can be a good thing that pushes individuals to try their best to overcome obstacles. However, chronic stress is potentially dangerous for the mind and body. 2020 has been a stressful year for many people. A global pandemic that emerged in late 2019 and continued into the new year brought with it many changes — some of which are unprecedented. Concerns about the COVID-19 virus, unemployment, reduced wages, and uncertainty about the future has left many people feeling adrift. According to the American Psychological Association’s Stress in America survey, the average reported stress level for adults in the United States related to the coronavirus pandemic is 5.9. When asked to rate their stress level in general, the average reported stress for American adults is 5.4. This is higher than the average stress level reported in 2019, which was 4.9, and marks the first significant increase

A “Day of Helping Hands” outdoor drive-by food drop will be held on October 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway in Islip. Volunteers will be at tables set up in front of the church doors, which face St. Mark’s Lane, just a couple of feet off Montauk Highway. St. Mark’s Rector, The Very Reverend Richard E. Simpson, is quick to point out that this is a nonsectarian event. “We want to expand the community outreach. It doesn’t matter if you’re

a parishioner or not. It doesn’t matter if you’re Episcopalian or not. It doesn’t matter if you live in Islip, Patchogue, Shirley or Bellport, or even in North Shore communities, such as Huntington.” All collected food is sent to God’s Provisions, Inc, an organization that works with LI Cares. The organization distributes food to pantries throughout the South Shore. Dana Jahn, who runs God’s Provision added that, without the efforts of the community, the organization would be

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, is giving Long Islanders the opportunity to address the nation’s coin shortage, while at the same time, helping raise funds for its vital programs. You can do so by participating in the Great Pal-O-Mine Coin Challenge. Here’s how it works. School students, employees, volunteers, staff and the general public can pick up designated coin jars at Pal-O-Mine and then collect change in all denominations. The jars can be returned to Pal-O-Mine in conjunction with one of its themed “collection days” whereby the jars dropped off, weighed and a contest held for the heaviest jar. There will be three opportunities to win special Pal-O-Mine prizes: one on Halloween Day, another during Thanksgiving week and the last one on New Year’s Day. Not only will the coins collected be of great assistance to Pal-O-Mine, but the first $10,000 raised will also be matched by Empire National Bank. All the coins collected by PalO-Mine will be returned back into the coin channel to help meet the coin shortage. We’ve been doing it every month since.” He continued, “But, as one parishioner pointed out, the holidays will be strange enough this year, and especially grim for some families. The weather will also get cold soon and we don’t know what it will look like once we can’t hold these outdoors. That makes this one even more critically important.” The food drive is collecting non-perishable items such as pasta, rice, beans, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, mac and cheese, juice boxes, crackers, cookies, salt, pepper, cake/ brownie mixes, canned tuna and chicken, stuffing mix, soup, canned gravy, tomato sauce, condensed milk, pudding (boxed and not prepared) jello, apple sauce, canned vegetables and fruit, kidfriendly treats, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, toiletries, pet food, baby products, etc. Please don’t donate anything that can spoil. People don’t even need to get out of their cars if they don’t wish to, they can pop the trunk and volunteers will collect the donations. Masks and social distancing are required. Rigo Wins John Gagliano Memorial Scholarship

East Islip High School Class of 2020 graduate Dylan Rigo was recently awarded the John Gagliano Memorial Scholarship due to his outstanding academic and athletic achievements and exemplary service to the East Islip Youth Football League organization. Rigo, an All-County running back/linebacker, served as East Islip’s team captain and earned a county championship in 2016. On Aug. 10, just a few days before leaving to attend Utica College, Rigo was visited by EIYFL directors Tom Costarelli and Henry Nunez, who presented him with the scholarship certificate. “Throughout his entire football career, Dylan has always made our East Islip community proud of both his success in the classroom as well as on the football field,” Costarelli and Nunez said. “Most importantly, he has always returned to his East Islip Youth Football roots to help out. We wish Dylan all the best as he embarks on the next chapter in his college football career.”

Gonzalez Distributes Backpacks & School Supplies On Saturday September 12, 2020, numerous community groups and nonprofit organizations joined Legislator Sam Gonzalez in distributing free backpacks and school supplies to members of the community. The event also included fun activities for families and youth to participate in, as well as a free performance by the Hoi Fa Su Lum Kung Fu Academy. Over 200 backpacks were distributed at the event, enabling families and students to receive much needed school supplies as local school districts begin opening for the academic year. The event, which took place outside of Legislator Gonzalez’s district office, serves as a memorable highlight in the history of Legislator Gonzalez’s community impact. “It is truly wonderful

to be joined by so many organizations within the community in giving back to those who need it most during this unparalleled time,” said Legislator Gonzalez. The backpack drive event served to aid the lives of students who are now entering schools during an unprecedented time, on top of the already increasing financial pressures that have affected families due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Long Island Ruff Ryders, a local motorcycle club, alongside the Puerto Rican Coalition For A Better Community Inc., largely assisted the event – aiding in packaging and distributing backpacks to students and families. “Long Island Ruff Ryders are the community, in any community we come to,” said Jaycass, a representative of the

motorcycle organization. Shyla Silva, the USA National Miss Puerto Rico Princess 2020, also attended the event and helped promote antibullying efforts. “I had a blast promoting antibullying at Legislator Gonzalez’s backpack distribution event. It is great giving back as a team. They have adopted me into their team and I am so thankful they have. We will continue to join forces to help our community, and I cannot wait to see what we work in next,” said Shyla. Legislator Gonzalez looks forward to leading more community events that continue to benefit the lives of constituents within the 9th Legislative District, as well as the continued impact of the organizations that aided in this event.

In many cases, they will include Komen’s iconic logo on

their packaging. 2. How will the charity use the donation? It should be clear where the proceeds go. Look for programs that support organizations which take a 360-degree approach to fighting the disease by funding breakthrough research, supporting compassionate public policy and providing patient support. 3. How is the program structured? Transparency is key. Is the company clearly stating how the money is raised and how much will be going to charity? For example, if it’s a donation per purchase structure, ask how much of the purchase price benefits the charity. Is there is a minimum or maximum contribution? This organization was formed in 2014 when a woman wanted a wig for her daughter who has Alopecia. She reached out to Manny Roberts Hair Replacement, a wig business owned by Dean Riskin and mentioned that her daughter saw one of their wigs on a TV show, worn by someone else who has Alopecia. She immediately felt a sense of relief, realizing she is not the only person who has this condition. Her mother wanted to do anything she could to get her daughter a wig just like this, hence why she reached out to the business who created it.

(StatePoint) It is not always easy to tell how your charitable dollars are going to be used, especially during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Honored every October, this is a time of year when many companies use pink logos on product packaging to symbolize support for breast cancer-related charities. Unfortunately, these symbols are not always backed by a promise that proceeds will directly support research or those living with breast cancer. In the case of Susan G. Komen and its Live Pink program, the organization works closely with all its partners to ensure program details are transparent to consumers. And this year, 18 companies are donating a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of select products to Komen. As many consumers are doing much of their shopping online these days, Komen has created a site

Their goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of those suffering hair loss due to medical conditions. Using Diet and Exercise to Prevent Breast Cancer

The Risk Factors For Breast Cancer

The more alcohol a person drinks, the higher his or her cancer risk. The ACS recommends no more than one drink per day for women and two for men. A fiveounce glass of wine is considered one drink. • Susan G. Komen® says a high body mass index has been associated with increased risk for postmenopausal breast cancer. Exercise may help reduce risk by altering metabolism, hormones and breast density. • Inﬂammation is an immune system response to injury or illness. However, when inﬂammation is chronic, it can damage DNA and lead to cancer, advises

the National Cancer Institute. Deep marine fish; dark, leafy green vegetables; bright, multicolored vegetables; black teas; and spices like turmeric can help fight or prevent inﬂammation. • The ACS recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week (or a combination), preferably spread throughout the week to keep body weight in check. • Stanford Health Care says consumption of high amounts of sugar can increase insulin levels and result in weight gain, each of which can lead to breast cancer. Limit intake of sugary snacks and refined carbohydrates, opting for healthy alternatives such as fruit, vegetables, beans, whole grains, dairy, and soy milk. Diet and exercise is vital to overall health and can help women reduce their risk for breast cancer.

But when it comes to breast cancer, women from all walks of life share various risk factors for a disease that the World Health Organization indicates is the most frequent cancer among women. Risk factors are anything that affects the likelihood that individuals will get a certain disease. In regard to breast cancer, the American Breast Cancer Foundation notes that various factors, some that result from lifestyle choices and others that are not changeable, can increase a woman’s risk of developing breast Recognizing cancer. these risk factors can help women make any necessary changes and even highlight the importance of routine cancer screenings that can detect the presence of the disease in its earliest, most treatable stages. Lifestyle-Related Risk Factors The ABCF notes that certain habits or behaviors can increase a woman’s risk for breast

cancer, but the good news is that women who understand the link between certain habits or behaviors and breast cancer can avoid those behaviors to decrease their risk of developing the disease. According to Breastcancer.org, the following are some habits, behaviors or lifestyle choices that can increase a woman’s risk for breast cancer. • Alcohol consumption: Breastcancer.org notes that researchers have uncovered links between the consumption of alcoholic beverages and hormone-receptorpositive breast cancer. One study found that women who consume three alcoholic beverages per week have a 15 percent higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who don’t drink at all. And while research into the connection is limited, a 2009 study found a link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer recurrence. lifestyle: • Sedentary Exercise consumes and controls blood sugar and limits blood levels

A sedentary lifestyle also can increase a woman’s risk of being obese, which the ABCF notes is a risk factor for breast cancer among postmenopausal women. • Smoking: Smoking has long been linked to cancer, and Breastcancer. org notes that smoking has been linked to a higher risk of breast cancer in younger, premenopausal women. Unchangeable Risk Factors Unfortunately, many risk factors for breast cancer are beyond women’s control. For example, the ABCF notes that roughly two out of three invasive breast cancers occur in women age 55 and older. Women cannot change their ages, but recognizing the link between age and breast cancer risk is important, as such a recognition may compel more women 55 and older to prioritize cancer screening. Gender and family history are two additional unchangeable risk factors for breast cancer. Women are much more likely to get breast cancer than men. In addition, Breastcancer. org notes that between 5 and 10 percent of breast cancers are believed to be caused by abnormal genes that are passed from parent to child. Women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer. Knowledge of breast cancer, including its various risk factors, is a great weapon against it as women look to reduce their risk of developing the disease.

When it comes to breast cancer risk, some things are beyond a person’s control. Women might not be able to do much in regard to their genetic makeup and family history, each of which can elevate their risk for breast cancer, but many risk factors are within women’s control. A healthy diet and routine exercise may help women reduce their risk of developing breast cancer, while poor lifestyle choices can increase that risk. For example, being overweight is a strong risk factor for breast cancer for women who are 18 and older, advises Stanford Health Care. Even 10 percent weight gain (or 15 pounds on a 150-pound woman) increases breast cancer risk as well as the risk of recurrence. Diet and exercise can play a pivotal role in reducing breast cancer risk, and it’s important for women to understand just how much good healthy diets and routine exercise can do for them in regard to fighting breast cancer. • Stanford Health Care says some studies suggest limiting dietary fats in the diet, particularly those that come from animals, to reduce breast cancer risk. These include butter, full-fat dairy, poultry skin, and fatty meats. Reducing intake of dietary fats, especially animal fats, may protect against diseases sensitive to hormones, like breast cancer. • Data from the Women’s Healthy Eating and Living study suggests that soy consumption from whole foods and soy milk for any breast cancer type is probably safe, despite

Instead of Shotguns, we

will be shooting riﬂe, archery and action archery. The day will be filled with Good Food and Fun!! The opportunity to participate is available for both shooters and sponsors. All shooters must be at least 13 years old. Social distancing will be mandatory, as will masks.” The fee of $50 per person includes Breakfast and a BBQ Lunch. All equipment

On October 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. shoppers will be able to find toys, holiday decorations, clothes, shoes, books and other items at the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Islip, ECW Craft Fair. It will be held in the church yard at 754 Montauk Highway. The decades-old ECW Crafts Fair has become an annual tradition for shoppers throughout both Suffolk

and Nassau Counties, while Long Island vendors get to display and sell their wares. ECW stands for “Episcopal Church Women.” The St. Mark’s ECW organization, founded by the late Helen Selgrad, holds regular fund raisers at St Mark’s for the sole purpose of doing good deeds through the Church, such as supporting a

disadvantaged Girl Scout troop, donating food and money to outreach projects and hosting various educational and health programs. ECW also supports the church upgrades, such as helping with the cost of an air scrubber system, so vital in keeping the church open during these Covid times.
