The Stars Align the National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC), and Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT). Henry Louis Gates, Jr. professor of African American Studies at Harvard University will present HBO’s award to President and CEO, Richard Plepler. Each year the dinner raises more than $1.6 million. HBO will be honored as a 2017 Diversity Champion, an award given to organizations that act as catalysts for diversity throughout the cable industry. Diversity Champions motivate the industry to embrace and value diversity by serving as role models, inspiring and encouraging excellence, removing barriers that hinder progress, and empowering others with

The Walter Kaitz Foundation’s 34th annual Fundraising Dinner will bring together a host of stars to New York’s Marriott Marquis in celebration of diversity and inclusion in the internet and television industry. Among the bold face names participating in this year’s event will be comedian Nick Guerra, of Fuse Media; music industry impresario and businessman Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs; Yvonne Orji, co-star on the hit series “Insecure”; and a special performance by New Orleans band, Tank & The Bangas. This year’s event, honoring HBO and Girls Who Code (GWC), raises funds to support the programs and initiatives of three key industry organizations: The Emma L. Bowen Foundation,
which was developed by Robert DeSena nearly 40 years ago as a method to reduce gang-related crime in the New York City schools. The jail’s Council for Unity program was honored for its innovation by Harvard University’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation in the year 2010, and has since become a model for other correctional facilities statewide. Madeline Singas, the District Attorney of Nassau County, and Dr. James Li will also be receiving awards at the event, which will be hosted by

On Thursday, November 9th, the non-profit agency Council for Unity will honor individuals that have made a significant impact on reducing gang violence in society at its ‘’Champions for Children Gala’’ at the Garden City Hotel. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco will be among the honorees. To kick off East Islip Pride Day on September 15th and prepare for the following day’s homecoming festival, East Islip High School’s students gathered in the gymnasium for a spirited pep rally. The teams represented included basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross-

For East Islip’s latest homecoming, change was in the air as the district debuted an exciting Homecoming Festival in lieu of the traditional parade. The September 16th event, held at the Early Childhood Center soccer fields, featured carnival games created and run by high school students, as well as a DJ spinning upbeat music, a rock-climbing wall and other festivities. EI spirit was in full effect, with faces painted in red and white. The varsity Redmen provided some exciting
football action at the ensuing game, despite losing to Sayville, 35-14. During halftime, John Camlet and Mia DiGiovanna were crowned by Principal William Brennen as homecoming king and queen, respectively. The pair were congratulated by the rest of the homecoming court, consisting of freshmen Robert Camlet and Marie Tohill; sophomores Joseph Falcon and Ashley Rosenthal; juniors Steven Gieseler and Jolie Lenox; and seniors Hayley Arnold, Alexa Benitez, Michael
Silva and Justin Taveras. Odds & Ends So begins year two of the great “unretirement” from dance, as I dusted off the old tap shoes yet again and made my way back to the studio of my childhood once more. There is something to be said for recapturing your youth, however recent it may have been. In some ways, it is even better the second time around, as we all seem to have a newfound appreciation for the respite it provides from daily life. It is important for everyone to discover their own outlet, whether it be in the form of mental or physical release, as we each have our share of stresses to contend with. Sometimes, isolating a simple moment to take a deep breath and collect your thoughts is all that is needed. Other times, an hour spent unwinding while reading a few chapters of a book, listening to a record or even vegging out in front of
the television is an ideal way to decompress. With that, the new fall tv season is upon us, providing hours of entertainment to choose from, or randomly flip through, as the case may be. It’s funny, but back in the old VCR days, I would painstakingly plan out my viewing schedule, determining which shows to watch live, which to record, sometimes on multiple devices. Now, with the advent of DVR, I record almost everything, preferring instead to fast forward through the commercials. Of course, with this, you run the risk of having particularly popular plot lines “spoiled” for you on social media, due to everyone’s incessant need to instantaneously offer a running commentary on just about every aspect of life. What ever did we do before Twitter, I wonder? Speaking of, rumor has it

that the social media giant will be doubling the character limit of its Tweets, a piece of “news” completely irrelevant to most people; yet somehow, it has dominated the news cycle of late. Sometimes, concise is the way to be. No need to elaborate. The more space we have, the more we tend to ramble on… and, well, you know… But I digress. As October sets in, and perhaps with it a bit of autumnal weather - not that I’m complaining about the Indian summer we have been enjoying - hopefully everyone will take advantage of the fall festivals, apple and pumpkin picking and Halloween festivities happening from one end of the island to the next. Or perhaps a simple stroll through the changing leaves is more your speed. If so, might I suggest a pair of tap shoes? It does tend to lighten the mood. Happy October everyone!

Outreach Support The 3rd annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk at Jones Beach to raise funds and awareness on the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, October 7th, beginning at 10 a.m. The event is held each year to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdoes at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $39,000 to
Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance
abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.” “It’s been more than four years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our determination to continue fighting addiction. Thousands of residents turned out for the Town of Islip’s Great South Bay Seafest Saturday at the Bay Shore Marina. The event took place under blue skies and sunshine, with attendees enjoying a variety of seaside activities including, a
tour of the Priscilla, the Historic Oyster Sloop, a snapper fishing clinic, as well as paddleboard and kayak lessons. Live music filled the air, along with the aroma of a wide variety of festival food truck specialties. Families of all ages enjoyed the beautiful
weather, and said one last goodbye to summer. “The Seafest was a tremendous success, and we’re looking forward to bringing it back next year, bigger and better,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

School district staff who attended the first annual Eastern Suffolk BOCES Arts-in-Education (AIE) Advisory Council meeting played lollipop drums, learned how to do Dot Painting the Aboriginal way, play a Didgeridoo (the world’s oldest wind instrument), were inspired by a poet/ author/motivational speaker, and interacted with some common and not-so-common animals. Administrative Coordinator Loretta Corbisiero said, “What better way to experience Arts-in-Education than to experience Arts-in-
Education.” Corbisiero provides a taste of Arts-in-Education programs at her meetings to show how they have the power to enhance core curriculums and help students develop on many fundamental levels such as creativity, improved academic performance, motor skills, confidence, visual learning, decision making, perseverance, focus, collaboration, and accountability. Sampling the programs presented at the meeting such as A Taste of Australia, Hip Pickles Percussion Ensemble, Petland Discounts -Traveling Pets
Program, and Laugh-A-Lot Poetry is beneficial to the AIE Coordinators because they get to personally immerse themselves in the experience of learning and get a firsthand account of how the arts can make a subject come alive. An educator shared that the experience was inspiring and she came away with great ideas. Another stated that she understands how the Artsin-Education programs can be integrated into core curriculums and she’s going to bring all the ideas back to her district and share them with her colleagues.

Volunteer Opportunities The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers in Nassau and Suffolk County to be a part of the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event scheduled for Sunday, October 15th at Jones Beach and/or on Sunday, October 22nd at Suffolk County Community College, Eastern Campus, Riverhead. Community volunteers help lead and organize the event with the support of American Cancer Society staff. “From assisting with planning and set up for the annual event to taking part the day-of, there are various volunteer
opportunities for interested community members of all ages who want to become involved and earn hours of community service,” said Christine Haskell of the American Cancer Society. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events unite the community with a shared determination to help create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer. Dollars raised by Making Strides supporters help the American Cancer Society ensure no one faces breast cancer alone by funding innovative breast cancer research; promoting education and risk
reduction; and providing comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. Since 1993, more than 12 million supporters have raised more than $750 million nationwide. Last year, over 60,000 walkers on Long Island helped to raise more than $2.5M. contestants who ate for a variety of other charities. “Mondays at Racine” provides free beauty and spa treatments for cancer patients at Racine Salon in Islip and other locations across Long Island.
Fire Island Lighthouse Events The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society will present the following events: Lantern Light Tour: Path Through History Saturday, October 7th, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tours leave every 15 minutes. Meet in Field #5 at Robert Moses State Park. Enjoy an escorted lantern light walk along the beach and through the swale as stationed interpreters unfold the stories of the United States Life Saving Service & Fire Island Light Station. The fee is $10 per person; reservations required. Dress for the weather, and bring a flashlight for your walk back to the parking field. The Tower will remain open until 9 p.m. at regular fees. *** Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, October 14th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of the present-day lighthouse keepers on his rounds. New Coordinator
Priscilla Zarate has been appointed as the new ENL and world language K-12 coordinator for the Islip School District. Prior to this, she had served since 2015 as executive director of the New York City Department of Education’s Division of English Language Learners and Student Support. She previously worked for seven years as assistant coordinator for bilingual and ENL programs at the Brentwood School District; for a year as bilingual, ENL and dual language programs coordinator for the Long Beach School District; and for eight years as bilingual, ENL and dual language coordinator for the Christa McAuliffe School in Jackson Heights, Queens.
A resident of Deer Park, Zarate earned her bachelor’s degree in Spanish literature and elementary education at Hunter College of the City of New York, her master’s degree in bilingual education at Bank Street College, and her school district administrator and school building administrator degrees from the College of Saint Rose. Since 2013, Zarate has been a committee member of the Town of Babylon Department of Human Services’ annual Hispanic Heritage Festival, for which she coordinates children’s programs and activities. In 2013, she was recognized at the festival by the town and Supervisor Rich Schaffer as
a “Hispanic Leader Serving and Guiding Our Nation with Pride and Honor.” That same year, she was honored by State Sen. Phil Boyle at the Hispanic Heritage Awards ceremony in Brentwood. “I believe that every child deserves high quality educational programs that value, respect and represent the cultural diversity and languages students bring into their school communities,” said Zarate. “Every child should be well prepared for a global society by providing them access to educational opportunities where they can become multilingual and multiliterate and extend their horizons to crosscultural understanding and sensibility. My goal is to provide students, parents and teachers with the resources and support they may need to become successful in their school communities, as well as to instill leadership skills in students and encourage parents to take leadership roles in the education of their children. I look forward to continuing to develop successful programs that foster equality and an appreciation for learning languages.”
Supporting Students In its 21st year of serving the needs of the district’s students, East Islip’s For the Kids Foundation again stepped up to the plate with a generous donation for valuable academic, cultural and recreational programs. At the first board of education meeting of the year, held on Sept. 14, members of FTK – including President Pat Blair, Vice President Gina VanDenburg and Past President Nancy Goldfader – presented a $27,113.44 check to the board and
Superintendent John Dolan. “We are humbled by this donation and are so grateful for all of FTK’s hard work on behalf of East Islip’s children,” said Dolan. This latest FTK contribution included funding for the new 1,000 Book Club as well as to obtain STEM kits and build a memorial garden at the middle school. This donation, coupled with the other donations and programs sponsored in
the 2016-2017 school year, totaled almost $100,000, bringing FTK’s donations to the district’s students to more than $1,300,000. “We were thrilled to be able to make this donation,” said Blair. “We would not be able to do so without the tremendous support we receive from the families here in the East Islip School District as well as the district administration and staff. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory presented a symbolic check for $124,200 to Central Nassau Guidance (CNG) and Counseling Services, Inc. on Tuesday to provide advocacy and recovery coach services to Suffolk County individuals who have overdosed and their family members. The CNG Advocate/ Recovery Coach would be contacted immediately by hospital staff when an individual who has overdosed on heroin or an opiate is brought to the emergency room. A recovery coach will be dispatched to the hospital and fast track the patient into a treatment program. “Having an Advocate/ Recovery Coach arriving
at the hospital when an overdose is reported gives the patient and their families the support they desperately need at the time they are facing the crisis,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “It can make the difference at making a real and sustained recovery.” Jeffrey Friedman, Chief Executive Officer of CNG, said the Advocate/ Recovery Coach would be well-positioned to deliver instant engagement and movement toward treatment of people who have survived an overdose or who struggle repeatedly with substance abuse and their family members or support system. The Advocate/Recovery Coach will provide information regarding resources that are available
to assist those struggling with drug abuse and will remain in an active role until the identified patient has either engaged in services or declines further assistance. “We are very excited about this new service; peer engagement adds significant value to our efforts to address this epidemic,” said Ann Marie Csorny, Director of the Suffolk County Department of Health’s Division of Community Mental Hygiene. CNG will partner with hospitals in the catchment area to ensure they are aware of the services available and have the mechanisms in place to ensure individuals are presented with the options for assistance.
