Autumn’s arrival doesn’t mean the boating and fishing season has to come to an end. Quite the contrary! Most anglers will tell you that some of the year’s best fishing occurs in the fall, and boaters agree that leaf-peeping while slowly cruising through calm, mirror-like waters takes on an almost ethereal quality. However, the arrival of fall’s shorter days and

colder temperatures does require boaters to take some extra precautions in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for all. With this in mind, the Sea Tow Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to promote boating safety, offers the following six tips for boaters and anglers who go out on the water this fall. Update your charts. Local aids to navigation

like channel markers and buoys placed by local authorities may be pulled as early as October in some areas. With autumn’s shorter days, you also may wind up cruising home after dark, making even familiar landmarks hard to spot. Make sure your charts – electronic and paper – are up to date so you can use them to navigate instead of visual aids. Check nav lights and

flares. Make sure that your boat’s navigation lights are in working order and your emergency flares are not past their expiration date. Carry a couple of waterproof flashlights onboard to help you unload passengers and gear at the dock or boat ramp after dark, and be sure to stock spare batteries. Make sure your VHF is working. During the fall, the waterways are less

Gas up before you go. With fewer boats on the water, some fuel docks may close early during the fall season. Don’t assume you can fill up at your destination for the return trip home. Wear a life jacket. In the autumn, as water temperatures start to fall, boaters who accidentally fall overboard run an increased risk of hypothermia. While children under 13 must wear a life jacket when

the boat is underway by law, it’s a good idea for adults to wear them, too – especially at night. Purchase life jackets with lights attached so rescuers can find you in the water. Make sure they fit over your bulky “fall layers” – jackets, sweatshirts, etc. If you don’t have a life jacket, you can borrow a life jacket for free from one of the 160+ Sea Tow Foundation life jacket loaner stations. Find one near you at www. boatingsafety.com. Keep a “weather eye”. Autumn storms can approach swiftly, and often seem more menacing than summer rain showers. If you have a smartphone, download the Sea Tow App at www.seatow.com/ app. Boaters can use this free app to get up-to-date weather forecasts, as well as tides and navigation information. It also lets you call for help with the swipe of a finger.

The Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Family Education Outreach Program (FEOP) is dedicated to supporting the education of children in temporary housing situations. Julia Schnurman, assistant administrative coordinator of FEOP, said, “We strive to put donations directly into the hands of families.” When Julia received word from Jennifer Gunn, marketing manager for Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), that more than 20 boxes of

school supplies had been collected by the Employee Involvement Group at TFCU, Julia knew exactly who to call − Vincent Palumbo − homeless liaison at the Brentwood UFSD. Jennifer said, “We have been giving back to the community for many years with pet supplies, food donations, and donations to organizations like Ride to Defeat ASL Fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease. TFCU’s philosophy is ‘People Helping People.’” On Friday, September

13th, a caravan of cars carrying donations made its way from TFCU in Hauppauge to the Brentwood UFSD. Mr. Palumbo said, “There is an immediate need for tangible supplies for our students. We want to eliminate the barrier to students getting educated.” He assured Jennifer and Julia that by day’s end the backpacks, notebooks, calculators, pens, pencils, and other assorted school supplies would go directly into the hands of families in need.

including LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” and Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger,” followed by the intricate athletic routines of the cheerleading squad. When the football action resumed, the undefeated Redmen continued their winning ways, piling up a total 460 offensive yards en route to their victory over the visiting Blue Waves. Among the stars of the afternoon were running back Erik Adon (107 running yards, four touchdowns), quarterback Jack Hannigan (four out of eight in passing for 195 yards, 108 yards on the run and two touchdowns) and defensive end Bob Heyward (notching seven tackles). This year, the Elks National Foundation will fund nearly $3.74 million in college scholarships through its three scholarship programs. The Elks National Foundation’s Most Valuable Student Scholarship contest launched on September 1st and will lessen the cost of college tuition for

500 deserving students. The Foundation awards 20 top winners scholarships ranging from $20,000 to $50,000. The remaining 480 runners-up receive $4,000 scholarships. This scholarship is available to all high school seniors who are United States citizens. Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks. Males and females compete separately, and are judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need. Completed applications must be turned in to the

applicant’s nearest Elks Lodge, no later than December 6th, 2013. The 500 national winners will be announced in late April. Homecoming was a cavalcade of highlights for East Islip on September 21st, including the traditional noontime parade around the streets surrounding the high school, the triumphant return of the school’s pep band and a convincing 5036 victory by the varsity football team. For 75 years, the MLB record for grand slams was held by Yankee legend Lou Gehrig. Also known as “The Iron Horse,” Lou Gehrig hit 23 grand slams throughout his career. But on Friday, September 20th, Alex Rodriguez hit his 24th grand slam becoming the new MLB record holder. In the stands that night was Steven Gieseler Jr. with his father Steve Gieseler. They kept the score in their own score book, shared snacks and had lots of father/son conversation. The game was tied 1-1. During the bottom of the 7th inning, Alex Rodriguez came up to the plate. Steve turned to his

son and said, “Ya know, Alex hits a lot of opposite field homers.” With the bases loaded, a 2-1 count and two outs, Alex hit ones in their direction. The ball dropped about four rows in front of them and bounced back to them. Steve bobbled the ball, and Steven, Jr. dropped to his knees and got the ball. They were so excited about getting a ball that they didn’t realize the significance of it. Security came down to them and said that they could keep the ball, but Alex would like it back, and in return would meet with them after the game. After realizing what this ball meant, Steven Jr. graciously gave the ball back to Mr. Rodriguez. In return, Steven Jr. received a signed bat and ball from Alex Rodriguez himself, not to mention the memory of a lifetime that he and his father will always share together.

A Memorable Occasion

On September 24th, eight boys and girls were awarded several honors for attending and excelling at Boys’ State and Girls’ State. I am proud to say that I am one of these eight. From the moment we walked into Post 1738, we were greeted by men in ties with our national colors. The podium was even emblazoned with an American pattern. The event started with a prayer, pledge and the reservation of a chair in the corner for those who remain missing after all of America’s combat. We found ourselves in a room full of legionnaires, overachievers and politicians, such as Senator Phil Boyle, Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter, Congressman Peter King, Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Suffolk County Legislator Thomas Barraga

and many others. It was truly an intense experience. That night, at Post 1738, we came together to share stories and receive awards. Delivering a speech in front of them was

even more anxiety provoking. The eight of us found ourselves recollecting a week that served as the highlight of our summer and the spark for our patriotism. For me, staring at all of my heroes was truly a test of both my resolve and my public speaking abilities! We were in the presence of the people

that make our great nation run. Without the officials who were present, our society would be nothing. After giving my speech, I returned to the seat beside my mother and trembled at the thought of the journey I had just finished. My road with Boys’ State has come to an end, but my pride in our country has just germinated. At the end of the night, I received a Congressional Certificate of Merit, a Proclamation and a multitude of other awards; but mostly, a sense of American Patriotism. I would like to conclude by thanking American Legion Post 1738, the political figures who give me the hope for a greater nation, and the men and women who have given their lives for the United States of America.

Starting With A Win

East Islip High School’s boys and girls varsity crosscountry teams kicked off their league seasons on the 2.8-mile course at Sunken Meadow on September 17th. The girls team ran strong but fell, 19-37, to the local Kings Park squad. The boys team – new to League IV – emerged with a solid 20-40 win against Half Hollow Hills West. Senior Brian Kennedy won the race in 17:05, with

junior Alex Deveglio taking second in 17:26. “Next week we take on Hauppauge, last year’s league champ, and we expect to win that one also,” said confident coach Jim Marino. “Actually, we expect to win easily over all teams in our league except for Riverhead on October 8th. That meet will probably determine the league champion.” Marino cited several top runners to watch,

including Kennedy, Deveglio and sophomore William Reed. “Will has come on real strong for us,” he said. On September 19th, Gardiner Manor School’s Open House was attended by hundreds of parents eager to hear about the year in store for their child. Teachers outlined curriculum using Common Core modules, discussed the Math In Focus program and shared with parents the exciting learning opportunities available to their students this school year. Fourth and fifth grade teachers explained the CCLS

(Common Core Learning Standards) and the necessary shifts in literacy and math instruction in order to better prepare our children for college and career readiness. In addition, teachers discussed field trips and “The 7 Habits”, Gardiner Manor’s character education program that spotlights and supports behaviors that best help children develop into productive students. Exit Sandman By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Cliché? Sure. The headline has been used countless times by every media outlet imaginable to commemorate the retirement of a living legend, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. But it’s fitting. So very fitting. Yankee fan or not, as we have seen over the last few weeks – the entire season, really – there is no one who can deny the pure talent, the class and dignity with which this man played the game for 19 seasons. In city after city, members of opposing teams eagerly lined up to honor a pitcher the likes of which this game will never see again. Plaques and gifts were presented, generous donations were

made to his charitable organization and crowds rose to their feet in extended standing ovations, marveling at their good fortune at being able to witness a slice of history. Of course, no one does pomp and circumstance quite like the New York Yankees themselves. I was fortunate to be a member of the sellout crowd who turned out for the team’s official sendoff to the Sandman, on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013. What an amazing display of affection from the team, past players, managers, coaches – and the fans, who seemed to not want the opening ceremony to end. The last player to ever wear the #42 had his number retired alongside the greats in Monument Park, surrounded

by the family of the original #42, Jackie Robinson. Metallica entered the field to perform the “Sandman’s” selfappointed theme song live, as Mo ran out to greet the members of the former World Championship teams who lined the diamond. It was perfect, just like Mariano had been so many times before. What a priceless memory, up there right along with the countless classic moments he had helped orchestrate throughout the years. Nineteen seasons – pretty much the entire duration of my time as a baseball fan. That’s an absence that’s pretty difficult to get over. Baseball, quite simply, will never be the same for me. Thanks for the memories, Mariano. #42 Forever.

Filling the school’s gymnasium with Redmen pride, students filed in on September 20th to the rousing strains of East Islip’s pep band, led by director Christopher Neske, as East Islip High School held its annual Pep Rally. Athletic Director Stephen Restivo began the program by acknowledging East Islip’s non-school local teams in hockey and rugby, as well as the junior varsity athletes in attendance, before

beginning the introduction of the school’s 2013-2014 boys and girls varsity athletic teams. The pep rally continued with the announcement of this year’s homecoming court: ninth-graders Amber Farbman and Vinny Fiumara, 10th-graders Laura Coffin and Ryan Cooper, and 11th-graders Cammie Clemens and Chris Saitta. Senior Kinza Zia, an 11th grade attendant last year, was elected as 2013 homecoming queen, with

fellow senior Matt Cowdell chosen as homecoming king. The 12th grade runners-up for king and queen were Sal DiSanto and Joe Fitzpatrick, and Lauren Donato and Thea Tsolomitis, respectively. The American Red Cross has awarded a $60,000 grant to The Disability Opportunity Fund to support longterm recovery services for people with disabilities and their families affected by Superstorm Sandy. The Disability Opportunity Fund (The DOF) will use the grant to help 50 families develop housing solutions and navigate the rebuilding process for their homes. The services will include individual counseling, assistance in locating possible properties, and advising on rehabilitation to make dwellings handicap-accessible on Long Island over the next 12 months. The DOF is a community finance organization based in Nassau County. “We are thankful for this grant from the Red Cross,” said Charles D. Hammerman, president and CEO of The Disability Opportunity Fund. “The resources will enable us to continue to provide assistance to people with disabilities, and their families, many of whom still have unresolved issues

related to Sandy relief.” John Miller, CEO, Red Cross on Long Island, said The Disability Opportunity Fund is a valued organization for the people it serves. “The Red Cross is committed to helping all Superstorm Sandy survivors recover. This organization will help a vulnerable population of people on Long Island who still have Sandy-related needs.” Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received $307 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of mid-July, the Red Cross has spent or committed $260 million – 85 percent of the donated funds. Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey 11 months after the storm. As of September, the Red Cross has partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to

support the recovery of individuals and families affected by Sandy. ADRC’s Executive Director and CEO, Mary Ann MalackRagona, announced today that twenty-seven sites across Nassau and Suffolk will participate in the Center’s 20132014 Art Expression Program developed for individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. ADRC has been coordinating this very special program since 2003. The program includes training for professional coordinators, with ongoing support throughout the program year. The program culminates with ADRC’s Annual Tea and Art Exhibit where the paintings created by the Alzheimer’s artists are on display. Family friends and relatives are invited to the Annual event, and the event is open to the public. “It is always amazing to see the completed artwork because in many cases our Alzheimer’s artists are unable to verbalize but are able to put their thoughts, feelings and emotions into their artwork,” states Ms. Malack-Ragona. Ms. Malack-Ragona further states, “The purpose of the Art Expression Program is to stimulate the mind through creation, and strengthen self-esteem and relationships.” Individuals participating in the

Bay Restoration More than 50 friends of Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) took part in the 1st Annual Clams For Clams Fundraiser on September 7th to support its Shinnecock Bay Restoration Program (ShiRP), launched with a $3 million gift in 2012 from the Laurie Landeau Foundation and the Simons Foundation. Proceeds from the event will develop five new clam spawner sanctuaries in the Bay, which have been proven to increase water quality and control harmful algae while strengthening the clam population. Event co-chairs Roz and Richard Edelman, and Maureen Sherry and Steve Klinsky, both of Southampton, NY, hosted the event at Stony Brook’s new Marine Sciences Center at the University’s Southampton campus, raising more than $55,000 in tickets and sponsorships to fund five spawner sanctuaries. “The water here is like nowhere else, whether you like to simply look at it, paint it, play in it, or make your living fishing it,” said Maureen Sherry Klinsky who with her husband Steve funded two clam spawner sanctuaries. “I don’t want to look out across Shinnecock Bay 20 years from now, the tipping point, and wish I’d done something.” Research by Stony Brook’s School of Marine and

Atmospheric Sciences faculty shows that increasing the clam population in Shinnecock Bay can reinvigorate this fragile ecosystem. What makes the ShiRP project unique is its emphasis on collaboration among all stakeholders: area residents, Southampton Town Trustees, local fishermen and even other community non-profits. In

fact, the Peconic Baykeeper also donated a clam spawner sanctuary at the fundraiser. “The study of marine and atmospheric sciences is vitally important if we as a society are to find viable solutions,” said SoMAS Dean Minghua Zhang. “We have to be dedicated to taking action to solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.”

“It’s more evident now than ever before that friends of Stony Brook care about our community and about the future of the Bay,” said Dexter A. SURVIVORS’ DAY - Hundred of young people treated at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, their family members and hospital staff gathered recently at Eisenhower Park to celebrate the second annual Les Nelkin Pediatric Cancer Survivors’ Day. The keynote speaker was Sean Swarner, a two-time cancer survivor and author of “Keep Climbing.” As a leading center of pediatric oncology, the hospital sees about 200 new cases of childhood cancer every year.

Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families. Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined

forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is

incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination. Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. His love and commitment to his family is nothing short of inspiring. So please join for what will surely be another monumental event to support this inspirational family in their time of need.
