The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip, and has remained open throughout the pandemic. They helped serve those in need during this pandemic by giving them food and gas gift cards, as well as assistance with living expenses. They are grateful for involvement from local businesses that have held fundrasier events for them and even donated goods to their organization. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program, where they will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was

Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. As the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, it’s imperative that people everywhere take every step necessary to protect themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that a flu vaccine will not protect people against COVID-19. However, flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of illness related to the flu. Those illnesses weaken people’s immune systems, making them more vulnerable to other viruses, including COVID-19. Flu vaccines have also

been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization. That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their ﬂu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources. As the COVID-19 virus rapidly spread late in the winter of 2019-20, many hospitals across the country and even the globe were stretched incredibly thin. So anything ordinary citizens can do to alleviate such burdens can help save lives while also making hospital workers’ jobs easier and less stressful. Many people may be concerned about going out and getting a ﬂu shot in 2020. That’s especially likely for people who live in communities where

the COVID-19 virus is spreading. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health and the health of your family. Many doctor’s offices are now insisting patients wait in their cars until doctors are ready to see them, and masks may be required when entering the doctor’s office. Such measures can reduce the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus when visiting a doctor’s office for a flu shot or another visit, so patients should not be hesitant to receive their vaccinations in 2020. Patients can follow such protocols even if their doctors are not insisting they do so. The same safety measures can be followed by people who intend to get their flu shots from neighborhood pharmacies. Flu shots are vital to individual and public health every year, but the importance of being vaccinated against influenza in 2020 is heightened as the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus.

Individuals tend to learn about dental hygiene at an early age. On the recommendation of their children’s pediatricians, parents may begin brushing their youngsters’ teeth the moment the first tooth breaks through the gums. While proper dental hygiene is vital to oral health, it also can have a profound effect on the rest of the body. According to the Mayo Clinic, poor oral health might contribute to various diseases and conditions. Periodontitis is a severe yet preventable gum infection that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated, but the threat of periodontitis doesn’t end in the mouth. The American Academy of Periodontology notes there’s a connection between periodontitis and several other diseases.

Heart disease The AAP notes that research indicates periodontal disease increases a person’s risk for heart disease, with the inﬂammation caused by the former leading to the latter. People with existing heart conditions also may find that periodontal disease exacerbates those conditions. The Mayo Clinic notes that the link between heart disease and periodontal disease is not fully understood, but enough studies have been conducted for scientists to support the notion that the two are connected.

“Essential Drive for Seniors”  As part of United Way of Long Island’s response to the community needs that emerged from COVID-19, the organization hosted an Essentials Drive for Seniors, chaired by Pat Guidice, Business Manager of IBEW Local 1049. The drive launched on Friday, September 11 in recognition of the National Day of Service, in which Americans are called to volunteer in their local communities. The Essentials Drive for Seniors provides an opportunity for Long Islanders to come together and give back to senior citizens, many of whom are still vulnerable to the coronavirus. While social distancing protects the health of older adults, it also severs ties to critical resources, including access to basic but critical household, sanitization, toiletry and PPE items. Labor union members of IBEW Local 1049, who actively support the Long Island community, donated everyday essential items that seniors need but may not otherwise have in their homes such as toothpaste, shampoo, dental fixative, facial tissue and other personal items.

“We are very pleased to be working with United Way of Long Island to support its Safe at Home for Seniors initiative,” said Pat Guidice, Business Manager, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 1049. “Our Long Island members, who handle the utility work for National Grid and PSEG Long Island, play an integral role supporting the Long Island Community, and that includes its senior population. The COVID pandemic still has countless seniors confined to their homes. We need to provide as much assistance as we can.” “We are grateful to have Pat and his team of union members be part of United Way of Long Island’s Essentials Drive for Seniors. The items collected will make a significant impact in the lives of seniors across Long Island. Together, we are part of a United Solution to uplift our neighbors and provide them stability,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island.   The drive is part of United Way’s Safe at Home for Seniors program, which supports older adults in

the Towns of Islip, Babylon, Brookhaven and Huntington by caring for the health and safety of seniors who are sheltering in place and lack resources. Through United Way’s community partners - Family Service League, Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center, Housing Help Inc. and Pronto of Long Island - items collected from the Essentials Drive will be distributed to those in need throughout the fall and early winter. Local 1049 union members can drop off items at their specified work sites. Union members as well as the public can donate items to the Essentials Drive for Seniors by purchasing items on United Way’s Amazon Registry at www.unitedwayli. org/safeathome. Islip Welcomes Students Back Safely And Successfully Islip’s schools reopened on Sept. 9 and 10, safely welcoming students from each building – high school, middle school, and Commack Road, Maud S. Sherwood and Wing elementary schools – back for a new year of learning in a challenging new environment of masks and social distancing. “The first day of school was an amazing success for all of us,” said Commack Road Elementary School Principal James Cameron. “It was the culmination of many weeks of hard work and collaboration between

the community, parents, students, teachers, staff and administration. Even with all teachers, staff and students wearing masks, we could see their huge smiles and excitement in seeing each other again.” “This year is so much different than every other year, for the better,” said Islip Middle School Principal Timothy Martin. “We get to have two first days of school, and that is wonderful. The 35th Annual International Coastal Cleanup is now underway and Keep Islip Clean (KIC) is recruiting volunteer teams to both remove and collect data on litter found along shorelines. This global event is an initiative of the Ocean Conservancy, which takes the data they receive from many countries to track pollution trends and seek solutions to the worsening problem of worldwide marine litter. KIC works in partnership with the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society (ALS) on this ambitious project. As the International Coastal Cleanup sponsor for New York State, ALS provides information and data collection cards to participating groups. Nearly 200 KIC supporters volunteered last year to contribute data from Islip Township waterways. Cleanup areas extend beyond the shoreline beaches from West Islip through Bayport to include streams, wetland borders and other waterway areas throughout Islip.

On Saturday, September 12, 2020, The House of Judah, in collaboration with Legislator Sam Gonzalez, distributed groceries and hand sanitizers to members of the community at the “Songs of Melody in Central Islip” event at the TGI Fridays parking area at the Central Islip Town Center. Legislator Gonzalez was also joined

by the League of Women Voters, which provided voter registration on site, and by representatives of the U.S Census Bureau to allow individuals to complete their census form. The event included a wonderful and inspiring performance by the Voices of Judah. Over 150 individuals were assisted through this event, which provided

much needed sustenance and joy to families within the community that have been negatively impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “In this unprecedented and straining time, it is wonderful to be here alongside the House of Judah in an effort to help uplift our community,” said Legislator Gonzalez. Brentwood and Central

Islip remain one of the hardest hit areas by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, significantly affecting the livelihoods of families who reside within the area. “Songs of Melody in Central Islip’ was truly an afternoon with melodies of joy and excitement soaring in the air,” said Pastor Mangum. “The testimonies given by spectators, the positive connection made

with the residents and the smiles on their faces will forever be captured with The House of Judah.” “We look forward to sponsoring events, providing resources and collaborating with elected officials, community organizations focused towards having a favorable impact; while enhancing the lives of the Central Islip community,” said Lady
