The Press Club of Long Island has been named a National Large Chapter of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists. The honor was announced today at SPJ’s Excellence in Journalism conference in New Orleans. PCLI shares the recognition this year with Florida’s pro chapter. PCLI was runner-up for National Chapter of the Year in 2014 and 2015. The chapter’s student outreach committee, which has conducted dozens of presentations in local high schools and

Once a Bulldog It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000. Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School. Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into
anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins. But for me, it is and always will be, home. The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed. Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the
festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy. And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!

On Tuesday evening, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center hosted a fundraiser for its Children’s Center at Nassau County Family Court. The event was held at Tesoro’s Ristorante, located at 967 Old Country Road in Westbury, and featured Long Island singing sensation and recent television personality, Sal “The Voice” Valentinetti. Sal entertained the crowd with a selection of covers from the likes of the Rat Pack and Bobby Darin and was met with an enthusiastic reception. More than 60 guests came out to support the Children’s Center, and raised in excess of $13,000. The Children’s Center provides care and early

Students at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School learned how to change the world by cultivating kindness, thanks to an inspirational assembly by author and performer Rich Specht of ReesSpecht Life. Specht’s book, “A Little Rees Specht Cultivates Kindness,” was inspired by the outpouring of help his family received after losing his young son Rees, and the presentation engaged the youngsters by comparing spreading kindness to
planting seeds, through song. The program was funded by East Islip’s For the Kids Foundation, which purchased an autographed copy of the book for each East Islip elementary school student. “It was inspirational to see how Rich Specht made powerful connections to the students of Connetquot, through his words and songs, and the book he wrote,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “When he asked the children how they could
make the world a better place, they enthusiastically called out, ‘by spreading kindness!’ This was such a meaningful way to begin a new school year and motivate our students to be considerate and sensitive to their classmates. All of the elementary schools are so appreciative of the generous donation that was made by FTK. Kudos to an exemplary assembly and lesson on what matters most in life.”

Cultivating Kindness

Beautifying the Town
Perhaps while driving down Main Street in East Islip, or Carleton Avenue in the Terrace, you noticed the beautiful flower baskets hanging from the historical light posts. The East Islip Beautification Committee, which is a sub-division of The East Islip Chamber of Commerce, brought this heartwarming project to fruition. The Beautification committee, co-chaired by Dana Ehlich and Christine Mc Donough, does a beautiful job adding flower power to the town. Working hand in hand with Bea Peterson of the EJ Autism Foundation, the special needs children from the town and the Life Skills class of The East Islip High School planted these beautiful baskets. It all starts at a non-profit greenhouse in Moriches.
Smile Farm (IGHL) grows the flowers in small pots at their facility that employs the developmentally disabled population. The flower pots are transported to Flower Power Nursery in East Islip, where under Dana and Christine’s direction, special needs children from the town plant them up into the 14 inch hanging baskets. They are watered and nurtured until they are ready to grace the town early in May. Ray the Plumber and Zoom Drain send out their fleet of trucks and workers to pick up the baskets and hang all 220 of them. Bob Maxner, with some help from Kyle and Dana Ehlich, water them every other day throughout the summer. Funds for this project come from a large donation from the EJ Autism
Foundation and from residents and businesses. Christine McDonough organizes a Light the Night event in December and a Paint Night in the Fall with proceeds going towards the project. Shandon Court also hosts a Paint Nite in the Spring. Many generous community members have come out to donate their time to get the hangers in place, as well as helping the children during planting. The children develop a great sense of pride by seeing the beauty that they created with their own hands on a daily basis. Saint Cyril and Methodius’s Cross Country team hit the ground running in Deer Park, even before the school year got rolling! With Coach Amber Sanchez at the helm, the team began meeting up in August to start training and learning the ins and outs of what it takes to challenge themselves in the coming weeks during the Cross Country season. Coach Sanchez is a triathlete, fitness instructor and mother of three boys at Saints Cyril and Methodius and has been volunteer coaching SSCM’s Cross Country team for three years now. The Catholic Middle School Athletic Association (CMSAA) provides a structure for interscholastic athletic
competition among middle schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, offering a variety of sports each season, ranging from Baseball, Softball, Basketball and Soccer to Volleyball, Lacrosse, Bowling, and Cross Country. In Cross Country running, teams and individuals run a race on open-air courses over natural terrain. The courses vary in length, may include surfaces of grass and earth, pass through woodlands and open country, and include hills, flat ground and sometimes gravel road. The benefits of Cross Country are both mental and physical. Cross Country training builds versatility and stamina, with experience running
over a wide range of speeds and terrains. Saints Cyril and Methodius has participated in CMSAA programs for over five years and this year’s Cross Country Team includes 16 middle school boys and girls, whose practices and meets take them to a diverse range of Long Island terrains and parks, such as Belmont Lake State Park, Sunken Meadow, and Heckscher Park, to name a few. At the heart of the CMSAA’s Mission Statement is their role in helping develop well-rounded athletes, so the program’s coaches seek to promote physical endurance and good sportsmanship, while fostering teamwork and Catholic values in all of their players.

Marching with Pride It was a day for celebration in Islip on September 17th, as students throughout the district, their families, friends and visitors lined the streets for the annual homecoming parade. The theme of this year’s floats, which were designed by Islip High School students, was superheroes. After their departure from Islip Town Hall, the freshmen accompanied a Hulk-themed float, while the sophomores traveled with Captain America. Following them were the juniors with their
amazing Spider-Manthemed float, and seniors sported a Mermaid Manthemed float, a character made popular through “SpongeBob SquarePants.” As students traveled toward Islip High School, supporters lined the streets with words of encouragement. Once they arrived, the floats were placed on the front lawn of the school, where they’ll remain for several days. Community members had a chance to enjoy the annual carnival before the start of the game. Visitors tried their luck at various
