2008. Since 2008 they have worked and played together, done a variety of community service projects, sold cookies, earned Merit Badges and taken trips together. The troop previously completed a project that helped feed sheltered pets to earn their Bronze Award. Their Silver Award Project, donating the AED’s to their church, has been underway since the end of their eighth grade year at St. Patrick’s. The Troop 200 girls, who all started classes at a Catholic High School this month, felt a responsibility to give back to the parish that they all belong to. Pastor of St. Patrick Parish, Monsignor Thomas Coogan said “We’re very proud of the girls and their accomplishments, as

we are proud of all of the students in our school.” said Msgr. Coogan. “Their gift to the parish might just save someone’s life one day.” “The girls raised funds by collecting and recycling bottles and cans collected at their school” said Troop Leader Marge Fleming. “The girls discovered during the project that the most direct way they could serve the community was to be the conduit to channel the good will of the local business community.” Stated Fleming. The AED’s were purchased through a combination of monies collected through their recycling activities, but largely through the generosity of the businesses in the area.

Girl Scout Troop 200, comprised of girls from St. Patrick School in Bay Shore, completed their Silver Award Project this week with the delivery of training for ushers and other church personnel on the use of two new AED (Automated External Defibrillators) devices that have recently been installed in buildings on the church campus. Holiday Happenings in Huntington Preparations are underway for the Eighth Annual Huntington Holiday Parade and Street Festival, featuring a new day of the week, an exciting grand marshal, more entertainment and a return of the fun-filled activities that have made it one of Long Island’s most popular family events. The region’s largest light parade will kick off at 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 26th, capping a festive holiday weekend in Huntington Village that includes the Huntington Lighthouse Boat Parade on Friday evening and Small Business Saturday. This represents a change from previous years, when the parade was held on Saturday evening and is in response to requests from several Village merchants that the event be separate from Small Business Saturday. Leading the parade – and performing as part of the tree lighting ceremony –

will be Michael DelGuidice, leader of the popular Billy Joel tribute band Big Shot. In addition to playing to sold out crowds at the Paramount in Huntington while leading Big Shot, DelGuidice also tours with Billy Joel, playing acoustic guitar and doing some vocals. Other changes from last year’s Parade and Street Festival include new categories for the popular Gingerbread House contest, limiting the competition to home bakers, grouped by age: Children (under 15 years old) and Adult (15 and over). The finalists in both categories will be displayed in storefronts on New York Avenue, again for a public vote on the 26th, and the finalist entries in both categories will be placed on display in the Town Hall lobby throughout December and January. The display has been a popular attraction for Town Hall visitors.

Many of the other features that have made the day truly special will be back, by popular demand, including the interactive map that people can access online through their smart phones and tablets. The map provides information about participating merchants and any offers they might have tied to the day, as well as parking availability, parade details and a guide to the festival. Any merchant wishing to participate this year can download an application on the Town’s website or on the Huntington Holiday Facebook page. In addition to providing a social media presence the page gives those who are coming to the parade an additional avenue to obtain information. A coupon sheet will be on the page, with deals from around the village for people to print out before the parade and festival; as well as any applications will be up there as pictures for people

to download. The parade, which draws between 5,000 and 10,000 people to the Village, will kick off at 5 p.m. from the Big H Shopping Center on New York Avenue and will proceed north to Main Street and then west on Main Street to West Neck Road. The parade will include competitions for the best floats in several categories, with judging based on how well they follow the theme of the parade, “Merry Melodies.” The friendly competition among fire departments is particularly fierce, because the winning department gets to choose who gets to play Santa Claus in the 2018 parade. Businesses and organizations are also encouraged to participate. Among the popular features returning from previous year’s festivals are musical performances throughout the Village during the day and a scavenger hunt. Organizers

are working on additional features; stay tuned. After the tree lighting ceremony, the festival will continue on Wall Street. A DJ will take over to maintain the festive mood, as children pay a visit to Santa Claus, get their faces painted, play in the bounce houses, or enjoy a free cup of hot chocolate, compliments of Christopher’s Restaurant, Almarco and Huntington Panini or free cotton candy or roasted chestnuts. There will also be holiday crafts and activities at both the Huntington Public Library and Panera Bread, starting at noon. Four industrious Islip High School students – senior Joshua Monteforte and juniors Malik Ellis, Victoria Lockamy and Chrystal Weiner – participated in the district’s Summer Youth Employment Program in conjunction with the Suffolk County Department of Labor, earning valuable hands on experience. “This county program is designed to give teens an opportunity to gain work experience by working with mentors in various

types of occupations,” said Renee Clock, the school’s coordinator of work based learning programs, who assisted the students in filling out their applications, preparing for the interview process and obtaining the necessary documents to participate. During the sevenweek program in July and August, the students worked for five hours a day from Monday through Thursday throughout the district. Under the direction of Director of Facilities Brian Graham

and the high school’s head custodian, Steve Seidler, they worked inside with the custodial crew and outside with the district grounds operation, assisting on a multitude of projects. They also met weekly with Graham and different local vendors to discuss possible career paths, work readiness and employability skills. “This program truly helps students prepare for a career, not just for college,” said Superintendent Susan Schnebel.

Starting with Kindness

All Fifth Avenue School scholars in grades Pre-K through 2nd came together to celebrate the beginning of the school year. Eagle Scout Patrick Funk (a Bay Shore High School senior) shared a

message of kindness with the scholars and donated a Buddy Bench to the school. Mrs. Wilson and Ms. Frimmer demonstrated how the bench would help all children have a friend to play with. Before the

assembly ended, scholars took the Bucket Filler oath by collectively stating the Bucket Filler Pledge and sang with cheer as they watched the kind acts one could do to others to fill their bucket.

Community & Creativity With purple-clad wellwishers lining Main Street, and the Bucky the Buccaneer mascot leading the way, the Islip school community began its homecoming celebration on September 16th with a proud parade, highlighted by floats created by each class at the high school. First came the freshmen with a take on the Magic School Bus, followed by the sophomores’ Willy Wonkathemed float and the juniors’ winning Alice in Wonderland creation. The seniors and their Clifford the Big Red Dog PERSONAL LESSON - Students in Mrs. Olsen and Mrs. Carino’s class at South float claimed the prize for Country School started off the year with a very personal math lesson. Students learned most spirit. A festive carnival about circumference by measuring their new classmates’ heads. What a great way to followed the parade. “Islip’s students truly make new friends while learning math!

showed spirit for their school and commitment to their community, evident in the creative floats, a well-attended parade and a carnival that welcomed children of all ages,” said teacher Ann Gordon. In their Suffolk III football contest later in the afternoon, Islip’s valiant varsity Bucs played hard but fell short against Bellport, with a final score of 37-20. During halftime, the school’s marching band, cheerleaders and kickline put on spectacular shows. Billy Bowling was named homecoming king and Kassidy Mullins was crowned as homecoming queen, joined

at center stage by their fellow homecoming court members Ryan Abravanel, Nicole Arey, Ashley Howell, Kristen Julich, Justin Kerr, Grace Klomp, John Luzzul, Kristopher McDonald, Gia Sciara and Sean Skahan. “As always this year’s homecoming demonstrated how amazing this community is,” said Principal Michael Mosca. “It was great to see the entire town come together to support their school. Despite the score sheet, our boys played their hearts out for their community and the students came together to support one another. That’s really all you can ask for.”

LEARNING MATH THROUGH SCIENCE - The scholars in Mrs. Olsen and Mrs. Carino’s class at South Country School started the year with a service learning project. The students adopted Mrs. Kotey’s 4th grade class at Burnett Elementary School in Texas through the Adopt a Texas Classroom program. So far, the scholars have collected over 90 pounds of supplies for their new friends. How do they know? As part of the project, they have been graphing the weight of the packages they send each week. What a great way to learn math through service!

OPEN HOUSE HELD - Whether you visited grades 3, 4 or 5, you were welcomed with a smile at Gardiner Manor School’s open house night. Teachers were excited to inform our parents on upcoming field trips and projects that scholars would participate in throughout the school year. Open house events are an important part of forming the school-home connection that is critical for student success.

The Islip Town Board recently passed bond resolutions that authorizes the Town to begin construction on a new animal shelter, improve Long Island MacArthur Airport’s Fire Rescue Building Communications Center and make improvements to the airport’s terminal. The total approved in authorizing bonds is just over $10 million. “I’m encouraged that the funding for these improvements to the Town’s infrastructure was approved by the Town Board; however, more remains to be done to bring our infrastructure to a level that is needed,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Among the approvals was $4.6 million for a Town of Islip Animal Shelter, to replace the deteriorating building originally built in the 1960s. We are grateful to Commissioner Jim Heil and his team, for all their efforts on behalf of this

long-delayed project. A special thank you to Sen. Phil Boyle for securing the $500,000 grant that helped get us to the unanimous Town Board approval... our shelter employees, the helpless animals and our residents deserve no less,” said Supervisor Carpenter. In addition, a bond for $3.6 million was approved for Long Island MacArthur Airport terminal and communications center improvements. These improvements include the replacement of a critical mechanical, electrical and plumbing system, that’s been in existence for more than 60 years. The Town Board again failed to approve a bond resolution that would have allowed necessary improvements at marinas and docks to finally be completed.
