September is National Recovery Month. On Thursday, September 26th at 4 pm, Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Drew
Scott, former News 12 Long Island Anchorman, and Kathy Koenigsdorf of the Jake K. Foundation will lead Islip Goes Purple (IGP) in front of Town Hall, 655 Main St., to show that the Islip CommUNITY stands together, in memory of lives lost, those in recovery, those struggling and the Islip families affected. The Town Hall Cupola will be illuminated in purple at 4:30 pm.
The Town of Islip has been in the forefront of the Opioid and Heroin crisis, officially designating The Town of Islip Opioid Task Force in 2018 to address this issue. The Town’s September 26th event is an inaugural event that will kick-off a Town-wide, month-long awareness campaign in September 2020.

Islip High School students Carolyn Do, Joyce Johnson, Keera Kittles and Desiree Pagan attended the fourth annual EDNY Justice Institute, exploring the topic of “Crime, the Constitution and the Courts.” The Justice Institute is hosted by the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York in partnership with the Eastern District of New York Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, the FBA’s Federal Litigation Section and Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center. During the week, students heard presenta-tions from federal judges, FBI agents and lawyers, discussing their respective roles within the federal court system. Students also participated in a moot court competition, with Do earning the “To Kill a Mockingbird” award for best closing statement for the defense.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant. Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation! The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).
Islip School District Technology Integration Specialist Timothy Brush and Islip Middle School science teacher Ann Marie Mills were recognized at the Sept. 10 Board of Education meeting for recent honors that Brush and Mills had received. Brush was named a Nassau Association of School Technologists Award Recipient by NASTECH last June. NASTARS are chosen for their innovation, their ability to seamlessly integrate technology and their exemplary technology leadership. In his position as technology integration specialist, Brush has worked with teachers throughout the district for the past few years to incorporate technology into their classrooms, providing richer experiences for

NEW YORK STATE TROOPERS HONOR TWO OF NORTHWELL’S FINEST - Ronda Gross, RN, MSN, vice president of Northwell NetworkCare and Mark Jarrett, MD, SVP, chief quality officer for Northwell Health, have each received the Doctor Chandler award from the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association (PBA), in recognition of their outstanding medical expertise and development of the highest level of care for New York State Troopers and their families.P{ictured: Michael Brooks, NYS Troopers PBA with Dr. Mark Jarrett and Ronda Gross
his health crisis, Ms. Gross and her team took the lead in organizing his hospital stay, scheduling his medical appointments and surgeries, even participated in a Trooper escort upon discharge. It was thanks to the ongoing collaboration of each team involved in his care that, Sgt. Antonelli was able to leave the hospital after five days of inpatient care on his own to continue his recovery at home. “In health care we’re here to serve, much like the New York State Troopers protect and serve,” said Ronda. Gross. “Receiving this award is an honor that validates what we do every day at Northwell NetworkCare, providing the best possible care for everyone.” Dr. Mark Jarrett, who served as a Trooper Surgeon for the past four years, is now a chief medical administrator on the advisory board of the State Trooper Surgeons program. In this capacity, Dr. Jarrett was instrumental in developing a transport system for Troopers in need, either moving them from one health system location to another or bringing them home following hospitalization. In addition, Dr. Jarrett has also served on the NYS Troopers business leadership committee. “We are honored to receive this award from the NYS Troopers PBA,” said Dr. Jarrett, “The opportunity to help those who serve and their families is our reward.” “Northwell Health continues to be a stellar option for many of our NYS Troopers and we sincerely appreciate the relationships we have built with Ronda Gross and Dr. Mark Jarrett,” said Michael Brooks, Director of Medical Operations for the State Trooper Surgeons
Program. “They have both played an invaluable role in developing key communication protocols for our healthcare navigation program, helping patients gain access to the right care at the right time. 70 YEARS OF SERVICE - On Monday, September 16, 2019 Legislator Tom Cilmi had the privilege of honoring Honorary Chief “Coach” Richard Eccleston as he received his stripes for 70 years of service to the Islip Fire Department.
Ronda Gross, RN, MSN, vice president of Northwell NetworkCare and Mark Jarrett, MD, SVP, chief quality officer for Northwell Health, have each received the Doctor Chandler award from the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association (PBA), in recognition of their outstanding medical expertise and development of the highest level of care for New York State Troopers and their families. Both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have worked with the State Trooper Surgeons, a division of the official union of New York State Troopers – the NYS Troopers PBA, for several years. They have each played a direct role in the creation of the PBA’s Statewide Health Care Navigation Service, providing necessary assistance, to some 15,000 Troopers and their family members. In doing so, both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have protected those who protect the people of New York. Ronda Gross, who serves as a medical liaison to the medical care team, has played a direct role in guiding access to care for many NYS Troopers. Her relationship with the New York State Troopers began in September of 2015 when she was asked to initiate a referral relationship with their organization. In response to that request, Ms. Gross created the NYS Troopers and PBA Hotline a dedicated line to the clinical care team of Northwell registered nurses available 24/7 to assist New York State Troopers. NYS Trooper Sergeant John Antonelli serves as an example of this collaborative relationship. After sustaining critical injuries in the line of duty, Sgt. Antonelli underwent several complex surgeries at Lenox Hill Hospital. From the beginning of

ROMEO RECEIVES EAGLE SCOUT HONORS - Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Islip High School senior, Nicholas A. Romeo, for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout as a Boy Scout of Troop 96 in Wantagh. Romeo joined Boy Scouts in 2008 as a Tiger Cub where he met his first Eagle Scout. He knew he wanted to reach the same level in scouting and worked hard to meet his goal. The Institute for Joint Replacement at Southside Hospital has opened its newly renovated postsurgical unit where patients will be able to recover in their own private room after hip and knee replacement surgery. The unit on the second floor of the hospital consists entirely of private rooms for patients with joint replacements to recover in a tranquil environment. Each room features state-of-the-art medical equipment and patient monitoring capabilities, as well as comfort amenities including pull-out sofas for patient visitors.
