Looking for Perfection It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong

adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile. I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reflecting upon moments and savoring them. Sure, it is equally important to be present in the moment and experience it fully; but pictures have the ability to preserve an instant in a way that memory alone cannot always fulfill. Hence, my albums full of fun and silliness, of candid

moments and scenic shores. Of friends, both the lifelong variety and those who may only make a guest appearance along the way. And of course, Buddy, my very special finned friend, who holds a unique place in my heart the way that only a pet can. He may be contained in a bowl, but his personality shines through, and the connection is just as real as those established with friends of the “Human” variety. Month after month, I celebrate his “birthday,” the anniversary of his time in my home, along with the standard holidays that we have been fortunate to share with him. Friends may come and go, and the memories may fade over time; but in the many heartbeats in between, perfection can be found. You need only know where to look.

A bit of bluster from Hurricane Hermine didn’t faze the enthusiasm of East Islip’s returning students, who streamed in to the high school, middle school and the four elementaries on September 6th with a strong sense of motivation for the school year ahead. “The teachers and I were so happy to see all of the smiling faces enter the building on the first day of school,” said Dr. Hillary Bromberg, the principal of Ruth C. Kinney Elementary. “It was truly an exciting day,” said outgoing Connetquot Elementary School Principal Deborah Smith. “All of the returning students were eager to

walk down the hallways of Connetquot once again, to find their new classroom and meet their teachers. The staff welcomed the children with enthusiasm, and the sound of happy voices filled the air. The students immediately began to learn routines and follow procedures to make the year successful.” Dr. Smith, who is in the process of taking over as principal at the district’s John F. Kennedy Elementary, was also on hand at the latter school. “In the classrooms at JFK, the students began to work on the major subject areas, delving right in on mathematics, reading and writing,” she said. “It

At this year’s Islip High School freshman orientation, Peer Ambassadors were on hand to assist incoming freshmen and help acclimate them to the high school building. Peer Ambassadors were established at the end of the 2015-2016 school year, when the older students visited the district’s middle school to talk about the transition into high school. For the Class of 2020 orientation on August 31st, the Peer Ambassadors

began the day with a meet and greet as students entered the building. After a presentation by building administrators and support staff, incoming freshmen were taken on a tour of the building, followed by an orientation barbecue. New Library & Tech Center In anticipation of St. John the Baptist’s 50th anniversary St. John’s has received the approval of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the support of their alumni and benefactors to proceed with a grand Library renovation to be completed in 2016. This facility will keep St. John’s on the cutting edge of advancements in education and will benefit the entire St. John’s community with its support for all academic and co-curricular programs. The new library will be a 21st century, state-

of-the-art learning hub. It will include a Video and TV Production MAC lab, a flex classroom, a college preparatory scientific research center, a conference room, media presentation space with digital archiving and 3D printing capability. It will be a completely wireless space, allowing students full access to WIFI. With an abundance of new and improved resources, students will be able to work collaboratively, pursue academic interests in order to learn how to conduct college level

research projects. St. John’s has partnered with the Library Science department and interns from SJU in order to learn and integrate coding and meta-data analysis, web design and information technology. Mr. Robert Crossan, Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations stated, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the incredible support of our parents, alumni, and friends who have pulled together to make so many great things happen here at St. John’s. It has been

a dream to see the SJB Library project happen and now with the support and generosity from so many we are close to making the dream a reality.” Historically, St. John’s has shown a dedication to technology and providing their students with the best possible resources. SJB was the first high school in the Diocese of Rockville Centre to establish a Video and Television Production studio, Radio Station, and Computer Science Department. Best First Day From Commack Road, Sherwood and Wing elementary schools, to the middle and high schools, for Islip’s students, it was a terrific first day of school, maybe even the very best. The windy aftermath of Hurricane Hermine failed to dent their excitement and renewed drive to learn as they renewed old friendships and sparked new ones on September 6th. “It was wonderful to see the students return to school,” said Superintendent Susan A. Schnebel. “This is what education is all about.”

“What a great day,” said Islip Middle School Principal Timothy Martin. “More than 700 students began a new journey in the middle school, and I could not be more proud of the children and their excitement. With our teachers and staff, anything is possible. I cherish the opportunities in the year ahead.” “Sherwood kicked off our first day in grand style,” said Lynn Burke, the school’s interim principal. “The positive tone set during Superintendent’s Conference Days, coupled with the hard work of all

staff made our opening a positive experience for every child. The students and families of Islip are very fortunate to be part of this thriving school community.” “Our kids were really happy and enthusiastic on their first day of school,” said Commack Road Principal Brian McCarthy. “As one of our fifthgraders, Kylie McDonald, passed me to board the bus, I asked her how her first day back to school had been. She smiled and said what I believe every kid felt: ‘This was the best first day ever, the best!’”

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s newest homeowner Nelsie Pimentel and her two children, Abigail and Christian, smiled while standing on the porch of their new home. The family celebrated the dedication ceremony and completion of their home build on September 7th with Habitat Suffolk staff, board members, house sponsors, government officials and volunteers who helped build their home.

and comfort to the homes of each of the school’s incoming Kindergarten students. They took the time to pitch welcome signs for each member of SSCM’s Class of 2025 and here are just a few of the smiles they brought to the students’ faces. No first day jitters for these youngsters, as they donned their brand new school shoes and backpacks and headed off to the start of their academic careers at Saints Cyril and Methodius. Building Teamwork Two dozen of the Islip School District’s newest teachers participated in “New Games,” a series of interactive team-building activities that allow the new teachers to interact while working together to solve problems. “The purpose of New Games is to cultivate a sense of belonging, to forge relationships while problem solving, to work together, to build effective working relationships and to promote play as a

tool to enhance critical thinking skills,” said Linda Lippman, the district’s assistant superintendent of administrative services. “Each team member’s contribution is vital to the success of the team.” The August 31st activities, which valued cooperation, were part of Islip’s annual new teacher orientation program. During the course of two days, the teachers also reviewed routines and procedures, met

with building principals, coordinators and central administrators, and hopped on the popular bus tour of the historic hamlet of Islip hosted by community members Kay Erwood and Nancy Libert. Approximately half of the teachers were about to start their first year in the district, with the remainder in their second and third years; Islip’s teachers remain in the program until they earn tenure.

Honored for Altruism

On Wednesday, September 7th at the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Sarah Anker and Legislator Kate Browning honored Nancy NowaskiRoesler for her altruism and community service. Over the summer, Nancy organized two fundraisers that collectively raised over $36,000 for families in need. In June, she organized a Chinese auction fundraiser which raised over $20,000 for the Bonacasa family. Deborah Bonacasa’s husband, Staff Sergeant Louis Bonacasa, was killed by terrorist bombers in Afghanistan.
