As members of the freshman Class of 2025 arrived at Islip High School for orientation on Aug. 26, there were cheers as each of the students walked across the threshold. Dressed in Islip purple, the Buccaneer University Mentors welcomed students and parents as they made their way to the auditorium, the first step toward their high school careers. The program commenced with the singing of the national anthem by senior Isabella Green. Assistant Principal Lisa Ward then welcomed the students and introduced the

administration and key faculty. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dennis O’Hara told the students that he feels blessed to be working in the Islip School District. He also mentioned that a growth mindset is very important, as well as incorporating the word “yet” while trying to obtain goals. “Keep thinking about your best effort,” Dr. O’Hara said. Principal Jon LaRochester told the students this is an important year for the school, its 100th anniversary, so the Class of 2025 is an important class.

AMVETS Post 48 Makes Donation To The Long Island State Veterans Home Families receive every benefit they are entitled to receive. Legislator Kennedy and Comptroller Kennedy presented proclamations to the Long Island State Veterans Home and AMVETS Post 48 for their commitment to the Veterans and their Families on Long Island. The Long Island State Veterans Home opened its doors to its first residents on October 25, 1991, after more than after more that 12 years of intensive planning and building. Located on the gold coast of Long Island, on the campus of Stony Brook University, the Veterans Home is 350 bed skilled nursing facility that provides round the clock

nursing and sub-acute care to veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Now almost 30 years later, the Long Island State Veterans Home has emerged as one of Long Island’s premiere providers of long-term skilled nursing services and adult health care and has compassionately cared for more than 10,000 United States Veterans. RISE Life Services Calls Everyone To FOODSTOCK To Help The Hungry

As the need for food donations continues to rise dramatically, Riverheadbased RISE Life Services will host FOODSTOCK on September 18, a event featuring live music, food and art with the goal of raising money and collecting food for RISE Food Pantries. “This will be a memorable event, one that people will want to come to year after year, and help their neighbors who are facing historic needs,” said Charles Evdos,

Executive Director of RISE Life Services. “We want to bring people together for an incredible day for an incredibly important cause.” FOODSTOCK will be held September 18 at Bayside Clam Bar & Grill from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. at 300 Bayview Ave. in East Islip. Legislator Sam Gonzalez Honors Melinda Gobin Recently, the Suffolk County Legislature hosted the Second Annual Women Veterans Appreciation Day Ceremony over zoom. During the ceremony, Suffolk County Legislator Sam Gonzalez recognized Melinda Gobin as this year’s Suffolk County Women Veterans Appreciation Day 9th District Honoree. Gobin served three years active duty in the Navy, aboard the USS Simon Lake (AS-33) in La Maddelena, Italy as a Firefighter. During her service, she also had the opportunity to serve as aboard the USS Wasp (LHD1) as an Operation Specialist 3rd Class, earn her ESWS (Enlisted Service Warfare

Specialist) as an E-3. After her active service, Gobin continued in the Naval Reserves for 4 years as an OS2, or Operation Specialist Second Class Petty Officer. Gobin earned the Armed Forces Service Medal, Navy “E” Ribbon, and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. As her service in the Navy concluded, she continues to serve her community and other veterans through her work at the Suffolk County Veteran Service Agency in Hauppauge as a Veteran Service Officer. “Gobin’s achievements during her time in the military are exceptional and she is a valued member of the Central Islip community

and Suffolk County as a whole,” said Legislator Gonzalez. “It gives me great pride to honor and recognize Melinda Gobin for this year’s Women Veterans Appreciation Day.” Last year, the Suffolk County Legislature designated June 12 as Women Veterans Appreciation Day through Resolution 942020 to recognize women who proudly serve in the United States Armed Forces. Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-proﬁt organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give. They are so excited to be hosting their ﬁrst Community Share Day on Saturday, September 18th with the Huntington Assembly of God! This will be a fun and engaging new way for their kindhearted, caring donors to connect with the families that they serve in their beautiful Huntington Station community. How does it work? You register online for a time slot. Then you neatly pack your car with the items you would like to share with the community, such as clothing, toys, household items, unexpired nonperishable food and any other items in good/new condition. Clothing must not be ripped, torn, or stained, missing buttons, or broken zippers. If you would like to give gift cards to families you may, but they ask that no cash is given. Also, no large electronics or furniture please. You can sign up for a two-hour time slot, where they will have the cars set up “trunk-or-treat” style in the parking lot. Community members will be able to walk around to the different cars and browse. You must stay by your

request.

The organization is looking for volunteers to help at the mission with their distributions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tasks include sorting, folding, hanging on racks, rolling racks in and out of the building, helping with pantry bags on occasion and being available to help people ﬁnd items for their families. The first day of interscholastic athletic practices commenced at sunrise on Islip High School’s fields, track and courts as the Buccaneers grabbed the first opportunity on Aug. 23 to spring forward with the fall athletic season. Under a rainbow sky, the athletes gathered on the football field as Principal Ron LaRochester led participants in the Pledge of Allegiance and senior Isabella Green sang the national anthem. The sunrise evoked the meaning of a new day and a new beginning, especially after the difficulties

experienced by athletes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dubbed by Dr. O’Hara as #IslipRising, this special return to the athletic season symbolized a sense of normalcy by student-athletes who have had to play under strict protocols and shortened seasons. “While other district athletes were still in bed, the Buccaneers have just completed their first practice of the athletic season,” Dr. O’Hara said. “The sunrise symbolizes our getting back to normal. But in Islip, we’re not getting back to normal. We’re springing forward.”

Head football coach Jamie Lynch remarked that the sunrise practice was an excellent idea. He said, “The athletes have been through so much, and to see them with smiles on their faces and with a lot of energy for the fall season, it could not have been a better event.” He continued, “We’re all pumped up and ready to go for 2021 #IslipRising.” High school athlete Jamison Seeger said #IslipRising was a great event. “It really brought everyone together to kick off the new year in the right way.”

Free Transportation Through ‘Ride United’ United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account. “United Way of Long Island is committed to keeping our communities safe and healthy. Ride United removes barriers of transportation inequity, ensuring that any Long Islander seeking to get vaccinated can get to and

from their appointment without cost,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. Ride United expands upon the organization’s COVID-19 response efforts. United Way of Long Island has helped seniors, veterans and families receive emergency financial assistance, fresh groceries, PPE items and HEPA air purifiers to improve their health, well-being and financial security during the pandemic. Expanding access to vaccination appointments provides a critical resource for neighbors who would otherwise be unable to get to their appointment due to financial, transport or other reasons. Association of New York State Middle Level Teacher of the Year and winning the 2019 Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators, Mills began searching for grant opportunities last fall to fund a large-scale native garden at the middle school. She submitted a grant proposal to NOAA Planet Stewards and was thrilled when the project was accepted. She then spent the following nine months completing the grant proposal at home during the pandemic, sending videos to Principal Timothy Martin and other Islip administrators during periods when it was not possible to meet in person. “I spent the past year dreaming about completing this project with my students, and was fortunate to have the support of my administration and building principal,” Mills said. “Submitting the proposal despite the pandemic will always be one of my most

memorable professional achievements.” As part of the project, Mills’ science classes worked virtually via Zoom with Seatuck Education Director Peter Walsh and landscape designer Sue Avery, discussing the ecological benefits of rain gardens and setting the class off on a design charette in which the students worked in teams to design and present their versions of the garden. The students went outside to recreate 3D versions of the garden so that they could select a shape that would be both beautiful and functional for years to come. In the months and weeks prior to planting, the students also removed soil, grass and weeds from the front lawn, mulched the site, conducted soil and water quality tests, observed the permeability of the soil after it rains, and developed informative signage. “Working with Seatuck to create this garden will

In a longterm partnership, the project was coordinated by the Seatuck Environmental Association, which worked with Mills and her students every step of the way. Seven years ago, Mills began her professional “metamorphosis” at Greentree Foundation’s Teachers Ecology Workshop, a weeklong event led by local environmentalists, scientists and professors. Home to one of the most beautiful native plant meadows on Long Island, the Greentree estate encourages educators to implement a native garden at their schools for both educational and environmental purposes.
