We Will Never Forget The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death.
Always In Our Hearts & Prayers
Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood. In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001. According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014.

The East Islip School District named Dr. Lisa Belz as the assistant superintendent for human resources and administration, a new position. Now in her 16th year in East Islip, Dr. Belz most recently served as the executive director of special education/pupil personnel services 6-12. She previously worked as the district’s director of special education, principal of Connetquot Elementary School and Timber Point Elementary School, and elementary principal of the early childhood center.

Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter helped make the American Dream come true for a Bay Shore couple and their four children by presenting the keys to the family’s newly constructed 1,400 sf four bedroom home on Hyde Park Ave. in Bay Shore. Mariluz and Luiz Castillo and their four children, stood on the porch of their two-story colonial during a press conference and ribboncutting ceremony Thursday,
celebrating the moment the family took possession of their new home, made possible by the Town of Islip Community Development Agency and Suffolk County, through the 72-H program. Under the program, the County is able to transfer vacant land to the CDA, who then builds a new, energy star home that compliments the community. The CDA provides the financing by subsidizing the purchase price through low and no-interest
home mortgages, low-down payments and with no closing costs, making home buying affordable. Luis and Mariluz Castillo are vetted, qualified home buyers. The couple came to the US from Peru in 2003 as Resident Aliens with Green Cards. They were naturalized in 2016. Mariluz is an employee at Positive Promotions in the Town of Islip, and Luis works for SJG Deli Corporation. In addition to their full-time
jobs, the couple works two additional part-time jobs. “It is truly heartwarming to join with the Castillo family, as they prepare to move into their new home and make memories that will last a lifetime,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org
The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered
it to the recipient right in his hometown! The recipient was filled with joy and loves his new scooter.

Conveying Opportunities As Islip High School’s band serenaded freshmen on Aug. 29, the incoming ninth graders entered their new school for orientation, greeted by the school’s Bucky the Buccaneer mascot, older student mentors, and Principal Jon LaRochester and his staff. “Orientation is always
unique in that you want to convey all the wonderful opportunities and experiences that students are going to have coming into a building like Islip High School, from academics to athletics, arts, the people and the human resources,” LaRochester said. “This
is an overwhelming day for the kids. They’re the graduating class of 2023 and in a blink of an eye, this is going to be the senior class graduation meeting. We want kids to enjoy their experience here, and utilize every tool and opportunity to grow.”

7 Ways Newspapers Benefit Students
Classrooms have come a long way since the days when pioneering settlers would send their children to single-room schoolhouses. Modern classrooms might be technical marvels, but one less flashy learning tool remains as valuable as ever. Newspapers might not be as glamorous as tablets or other gadgets, but they are still an invaluable resource to educators and students. The following are seven ways in which newspapers in the classroom can benefit students. 1. Newspapers build vocabulary. Numerous studies have found that reading can improve youngsters’ vocabulary. Each day, newspapers are filled with fresh stories that can introduce kids to new words, helping them to strengthen their vocabularies and make them more effective communicators. 2. Newspapers improve reading skills. Like the old adage says, “Practice makes perfect.” Reading newspapers each day can help kids develop their reading and comprehension skills.
3. Newspapers promote critical thinking. Newspaper reporters are trained to objectively report the news, sharing facts without allowing their own opinions to influence their stories. Educators can choose stories from the newspaper to serve as catalysts for discussions that focus not just on the facts listed in the story, but what might be behind them. Such discussions can help youngsters develop their critical thinking skills. 4. Newspapers bring ideas and current events to life. Many children are aware of major world events, even if they don’t know or understand the details. Newspaper articles about world events can be used as avenues to discussions about what’s going on in the world. 5. Newspapers build global awareness. Customized newsfeeds funneled through social media outlets can make it hard for young people to recognize and understand the world beyond their own communities and interests. Each days, newspapers include local,
national and international stories that can illustrate to kids that there’s a world beyond their own. 6. Newspapers promote social consciousness. Without newspapers, young people may never be exposed to the social issues facing their own communities or those issues that are affecting people across the country and the world. Newspapers provide unbiased exposure to such issues, potentially leading youngsters to further explore topics that are shaping their world and even encouraging them to form their own opinions. 7. Newspapers make learning fun. According to a 2017 report from Common Sense Media, kids younger than eight spend an average of two hours and 19 minutes per day looking at screens. Newspapers provide a welcome break from tablets, smartphones and computers, and kids may have fun flipping pages and getting a little ink on their hands. Newspapers remain invaluable resources that can benefit students in myriad ways.
Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic The Suffolk County Department of Health Services and the Town of Islip will offer free rabies vaccinations for dogs, cats and ferrets on Saturday, September 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brookwood Hall located at 50 Irish Lane in East Islip, NY. Although the clinic is available to all county residents, the quantity of vaccine is limited and available only while supplies last. All dogs must be on leashes and all cats and ferrets must be in carriers. Rabies, a deadly disease caused by a virus that attacks the central nervous system, is most often seen among wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can be infected with rabies. Pets and livestock can get rabies if they are not vaccinated to protect them against infection. New York State and Suffolk County laws require that all dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccinating pets not only provides protection for the animals but also acts as a barrier to keep the rabies virus from spreading between wild animals and people. Although no raccoons have tested positive for the rabies virus in Suffolk County since 2009, three to six percent of the bats that are tested annually are positive for rabies. The Suffolk County Department of Health
Services recommends the following precautions to protect your pets and your family from possible exposure to rabies: · Do not feed, touch or approach wild animals, or stray dogs or cats. · Be sure your pet dogs, cats and ferrets as well as horses and other livestock animals are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. · Pets too young to be vaccinated should be kept indoors and allowed outside only under direct observation. · Keep family pets indoors at night. Do not leave them outside unattended or let them roam free. · Do not attract wild animals to your home or yard. Keep your property free of stored bird seed or other foods that may attract wild animals. Feed pets indoors. Tightly cover or put away garbage cans. Board up any openings to your attic, basement, porch or garage. Cap your chimney with screens. · Do not transport or relocate any wild animals. · Teach children not to touch any animal they do not know and to tell an adult immediately if they are bitten by any animal. To keep bats from getting into buildings: · Not leaving unscreened doors open to the outside · Not leaving unscreened windows open to the outside · Making sure windows have screens, chimneys are
capped, and electrical and plumbing openings are plugged · Sealing all openings larger than 1/2 inch · Using materials such as expanding spray-on foam, caulk, wire mesh, wood that fits tightly, steel wool (around pipes that enter buildings), or polypropylene bird netting, to seal or cover gaps and holes Report all animal bites or contact with wild animals to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services at (631) 853-0333 weekdays, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Animal bites or contact with wild animals can be reported to the Department at (631) 852-4820 outside normal business hours. If possible, try to contain the animal so that it can be tested. earthy songs of renowned vocalist Mariana Lima and guitarist Julian Soler, then to the various Latin American dance styles of Fiesta Tropical Triple M, and then to the hip hop artist Dudley Music … with the otherwise silent changeover moments filled in by DJ Jomero. Also, a recipient of a Destination Downtown Award from Suffolk County, Teatro Yerbabruja
is engaging in a public art banner project as a means of maintaining and increasing public awareness of and support for downtown Central Islip’s revitalization program, especially the role that local and diverse culture and entertainment play in successfully creating a more desirable community in which to live and work.
