I am a WWII veteran. In September, I will be 89 years-old. While I was hospitalized in Paris for battle fatigue and trench foot, after the battle of Metz, I wrote the following poem:

Twas a beautiful morning, the time was not late, On the eighth of September, a memorable date. As we walked down the road before the attack, I prayed to the Lord to please bring me back. Yes, I was afraid, so was every man there, as we talked, sang and prayed in the cool morning air. Below in the valley flowed the peaceful Moselle. It was hard to believe it would soon be a hell. We jumped in assault boats and paddled ahead. Many were hit with shrapnel and lead. We fought up a mountain, our objective was near, But then came a counter-attack from the rear. We had to fight back to a place near the river, Dig our positions, sit there and shiver. For three days and nights, we bravely fought back, And tried to repulse their counter-attack. At last came the orders for us to withdraw. We had lost many men and could fight no more. One thousand went over, two hundred came back. My prayers were answered, I survived the attack.

After the war, I composed this poem: Well here I am, a civilian at last, And ready to start life anew. An ex-GI with the war in the past, And target for the public to screw. I’ve been offered a job for ﬁfteen a week, But to me it didn’t sound right. Before I could open my mouth to speak, I was signed up to work day and night. Yes, vacations are out and you can’t get a raise. It’s a hell of a mess I declare. I wonder if accepting a discharge pays, Or should I have stayed over there. Yes, America is the land of plenty; Excuse me while I pick up that butt, Yes, America is the land of plenty, But they never say plenty of what!

On August 24th, more than 220 people — including 18 teams — took part in the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc.’s (ADRC) 2nd Annual Riverhead Walk for Alzheimer’s & Clambake in Riverhead. Through the efforts of these individuals and teams who took part in this event, more than $30,000 was raised. Before the Walk, children had an opportunity to visit the animals at a petting zoo and enjoy pony rides. The Walk kicked off with an opening ceremony, featuring a presentation of the colors by the Riverhead chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, live entertainment by the USO Liberty Bells and a keynote speech by Town Supervisor Sean Walter, who presented Mel Mullin, President, ADRC, with a proclamation commemorating the event and proclaiming August 24th as Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Day. Local Campaign Launched The Mental Health Association in Suffolk County (MHAS), Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans are pleased to announce a local campaign to bring awareness about mental illness to our community. Stigma is commonly cited as a major reason why someone suffering from a mental health disorder does not seek help. Mental Illness Awareness Week is a national campaign established by Congress in 1990 and held the first full week of October. For the past 20 years Mental Illness Awareness Day has

been held in Suffolk County during the National Mental Illness Awareness Week, with the goal of reducing stigma and promoting understanding through an educational and motivational conference for people with lived experience in the mental health system, their families and friends, service providers, students and the community. Colleen Merlo, Associate Executive Director of MHA explains this year’s effort “For twenty years, we have held a very impressive event during the week, with nationally recognized speakers, but this

year we wanted to have a more grassroots effort and involve more partners in order to have a broader impact. The scope of partners is far beyond what we had imagined. Through partnerships with schools, libraries, faith based groups, civic associations, as well as mental health organizations; we are truly brining awareness to our community.” Mike Stoltz, Executive Director explained why public education to provide a more realistic view of people living with mental illness is needed now, “The tragedies in Newtown and

Colorado have also brought other victims: People with mental illness are mistakenly and hurtfully viewed with a ‘scarlet letter’ “D” for “Dangerous”. The rash of gun debates and laws has only served to amplify stigmatizing phrases and images. Mental Illness Awareness Week activities – on Long island and nationally – are geared to give correct images that call attention to the realities that: 1.) People can and do recover from mental illnesses and psychiatric disabilities; and 2.) Providing accurate information and good public

policy supports people to get the help they need.” During the week of Sunday, October 6th through Saturday, October 12th anti-stigma events are being coordinated throughout Suffolk County with the goal of reaching every Long Island family. Events include art showcases, film screenings, discussion groups, mental health screening events, and a kickoff event on October 7th at 8:30 a.m. in Hauppauge. This Community Conversation will generate feedback to send to the White House. The White House initiated

the national conversation on mental health at a conference on June 3rd with President Obama delivering opening remarks and Vice President Biden providing closing remarks and have encouraged Community Conversation in local communities to provide further input into a National effort to raise awareness and increase mental health awareness. When Worlds Collide By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the fall season tends to come an avalanche of entertainment. You have the intersection of football and baseball, new television season premieres and lots of movie and music releases to contend with, making your recreational choices far more interesting for the first time in months. What to watch, what to do…so many decisions, but for a change, the fun, trivial kind. This collision of all things entertainment never really hit me before until I happened to be attending a New York Mets game on the

very same night as the U.S. Open was taking place next door. As both events let out at seemingly the exact same instant, the rush of people streaming into one another (literally) was quite an experience, with those from Citi Field heading to the train platform and those from the Tennis Center making their way to the subways down below. It was an interesting contrast – quite the range of diversity on that boardwalk in that moment… people from all walks of life mingling after a night of taking in some of the finest local athletes (well, at the Tennis Center

anyway!). So typically…I guess New Yorkish is the best way to describe the scene. Add to that the ushering in of the autumn season, everyone being back to school, shaking off the last remnants of summer…it brought a unique sense of excitement to the air. Transitions are never easy, whether in weather or in life, but – in both instances – they simply must be dealt with. Like with most things beyond our control, they are better off embraced than shunned. So welcome autumn with open arms – it’s coming whether you like it or not.

On Saturday, September 28th, they will be face-off against their toughest opponent yet, the Corporal Punishers from the Jerzey Derby Brigade of Morristown, New Jersey. Spectators can expect a night of hard-hitting, fast paced action, with plenty of bumps and bruises between the teams. The 4th Annual Over 50 Fair returns to the Melville Marriott on Sunday, September 29th from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The one-day expo is being organized as a “celebration of life on Long Island” for people over 50. To make it even easier for attendees to participate in this year’s event, there will be free valet parking as well as free scooter rentals for those who need one, compliments of Patriot Mobility, Inc. “The Over 50 Fair is part health and wellness fair, part conference and part activities and lifestyle expo,” said Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, who also organizes Long Island’s popular All Kids Fair every April. With 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, there will be “something for everyone at the Over 50 Fair,” she

added. This year’s attendees will recognize some of the speakers from last year, while many are new to the Over 50 Fair. Classes will include two comedy shows, Zumba, social media, weight loss, bio-identical hormones, essential oils, and iPad apps. Over 80 exhibitors will be participating, offering a broad spectrum of services and products relevant to baby boomers and seniors, including local medical and dental practices, financial experts, and education providers, plus weight loss, vitamins, in-home care, and even psychic readings. Meditation classes will take place all day. Geraldine Puglia of Deer Park, an “over 50” who has attended all three previous Over 50 Fairs, described last year’s event as “very informational and

fun.” The Fair’s slogan, “60 is the new 50!” summarizes the philosophy of the event’s organizer, that Americans are living longer and should seek to live life to its fullest. Says Kaplan, “There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. You just need to know where to look to find them. Many can be found at the Over 50 Fair.” Free health screenings will be available, such as body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, and oxygen saturation. Attendees are encouraged to bring their non-perishable food and cash donations for The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local nonprofit, to exchange for raffle tickets for exciting and valuable prizes. Other non-profit organizations participating include the Lymphatic Research

Foundation, SeniorNet at Family Service LeagueL.I., and the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation. Rounding out the expo will be photo opportunities with three beauty queens, including Ms. New York Senior America 2013, Virginia Werner. Aneurysm Awareness Walk Hundreds of walkers, including brain aneurysm survivors and their family and friends, are expected to attend the fun-filled event. Many doctors, nurses and staff members from CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center will also be in attendance to show their support of the many patients they have treated over the years. Among those who will be attending are David Chalif, MD, and Avi Setton, MD, co-directors of CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm,” said Dr. Chalif. “The symptoms can

It’s that time of year again. It’s time for classes, homework and networking. School is starting, and students are piling into the classroom. It was a great summer, one that will never be forgotten; but for many of Long Island’s teens, this school year may prove to be just as good. For many high school seniors like me, these next few months will be the last opportunity to spend time with friends. It will be a time of high stress, but also high enjoyment. As we will all be departing for our respective colleges come next summer, this year

is all the more crucial. This year is the time where we will solidify the four-year bonds we have created with our classmates. Parties, skip-days and prom are just some of the times where your social standing will be tested. This is why it is important to have a solid base of friends! Even though your studies should be your top priority, maintaining friendships with those who have shared your journey thus far will also prove to be crucial. Even though your current friends may not be planning on attending the same college you are, networking is key. It

is a good idea to get on the good side of many of your classmates because you never know who will become somebody big. Maybe your friend from Physics class will own a Fortune 500 company and one day offer you a job. Maybe the kid whose locker is right next to yours will give you the connection to your career. This year, remember the importance of your friends. In addition to being there for you now, they will be there for you later. Life is a game of networks, and your senior year of high school is certainly a suitable time to start.

Game Farm Fun The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo has announced that its inaugural Fall Festival will take place on weekends starting September 28th and running through October 27th. While many Long Island outdoor locations close down in the fall and do not reopen until spring or summer, the Game Farm will stay open on Saturdays and Sundays in early autumn, even after the regular season ends on Columbus Day, October 11th. “It was a really highend experience for our students,” said the program’s coordinator, teacher Paul McHugh. The students completed placements at Long Island-based companies in a variety of career fields including finance, health care, meteorology, marketing, education, accounting and restaurant management, as well as the Suffolk County Legislature. Among the participating businesses and organizations were North Shore-LIJ Health System, Capital One Bank, News 12 Long Island, the National Weather Service, Morgan Stanley, Suffolk Transportation, NEXTGen Advertising, the Long Island Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Strategic Financial, Solar Dad and Sons, the Irish Coffee Pub, Island Shore Physical Therapy, the East Islip School District and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi. Prior to starting SYEP, 20 high school seniors met with McHugh in order to identify career-interest areas and to help them connect with participating business organizations. Once placed, students visited the worksites an average of three hours per week for six weeks during April and May. “It is very important for seniors to gain real-world insight into the career fields they wish to pursue after graduation,” said McHugh. “This experience allowed students to develop a clear understanding as to what a ‘day-in-the-life’ of the job might entail. With this knowledge they can make educated choices regarding their plans after high school.” McHugh explained that the program also allows students to make connections between what they learn in the classroom and what is occurring in the workplace. “This adds relevance to what the students are studying in

school,” he said. “And it helps answer the question, ‘Why do I have to learn this?’” Maude Walsh, an English teacher at the school who helped oversee the program, said, “As the cooperating classroom teacher to the Senior Year Experience Program, I was impressed by the generosity of our participating professionals and the dedication of the student interns.” She noted that the seniors returned to the classroom with anecdotes of their successful experiences, accompanied by PowerPoint presentations they produced for their classmates. “It was obvious that their participation was enriching and rewarding,” she added. “The students gained self-confidence and valuable experience, preparing them for college and career.” The participating businesses were likewise impressed with the seniors’ efforts and professionalism. “We were pleased to provide a window on the business world to East Islip students through our internship program, and look forward to working with them in the future,” said Andrew Corrado, the senior vice president and Long Island market president for Capital One Bank in Melville. “SYEP provided our students the opportunity to experience the everyday routine of a career they intend to pursue in college,” said East Islip High School Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. “The students were able to develop networking contacts and share their experiences with their fellow classmates. We look forward to growing the program in the 20132014 school year and providing more of our students with career and college preparation opportunities.”

Second Graduation In Sweden

Two graduations proved twice as memorable for East Islip High School graduate Anton Hagberg, an ambitious exchange student from Vänersborg, Sweden and proud member of East Islip’s Class of 2012. The enterprising alumnus had come to Long Island in the fall of 2011 to stay with a host family for a year while he attended school in East Islip. In keeping with Swedish tradition, he was required to complete his senior year a second time after his return home, something he was aware would be necessary before he signed up for the exchange program. Said Hagberg’s American “host mom,” Doreen Anderson, “This was a remarkable choice, to want to leave all that is familiar to you for the opportunity to reside in the United States with an unfamiliar family while knowing you need to complete your senior year once again in your home country.” Hagberg’s business talents blossomed during his time in the school’s International Business Globalization Career Academy, where he served as vice president of human resources in the Academy’s Mobile Revolution virtual company. “His hard work and dedication to the program and his positive attitude and energy were inspirational to all of the students in the classes,” said Israel Malinowitzer, East Islip’s director of careers and student services and the head of the school’s Career Academies. At the Virtual Enterprises International trade show at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York City in 2012, Hagberg not only interacted with customers, but was also selected to serve as a presenter in front of the panel of judges, a team of business professionals. “Anton

did an excellent job promoting Mobile Revolution and providing the information that was required for this competition,” said Malinowitzer. “He is a very special young man and will always be a part of the International Business Globalization Career Academy.” School was only one facet of his American experience. “Anton had a wonderful year in the United States, with ample opportunities for traveling,” recalled Malinowitzer. “The East Islip community welcomed him to our neighborhood through his host family, sports teams, students, school administration and faculty. Everywhere Anton traveled he was greeted with hospitality and curiosity, and subway rides were filled with meaningful conversations with fellow New Yorkers.” Hagberg traveled with his host family to Washington, D.C., where he greeted the first lady. He also visited Florida, went skiing in Vermont and joined his “American” family on their vacation to Hawaii, where he learned to surf. Through his involvement in the Business Academy, he participated in numerous events in New York City, traveled to Miami for business meetings and interviews, and attended the Academy’s annual education trip to Key West, Fla. and the Bahamas, where he met the latter nation’s current governor-general, Sir Arthur Foulkes, and learned about the politics of the Bahamian government. “The Career Academies at East Islip High School not only provide educational experience, but also networking with all industries, which was invaluable for Anton,” said Malinowitzer. Anderson and the rest of Hagberg’s host family in East Islip maintained weekly contact with him, and they traveled to Sweden this past June to celebrate his graduation all over again. The idea took shape during East Islip’s 2012 commencement. “As he sat next to me, Anton started to tell me about Sweden’s own graduation ceremony and their traditions,” said Anderson. “These traditions left such an impression on me that I wanted to make sure I attended Anton’s graduation in Sweden, since he sacrificed so much to be part of America and did not get to graduate with his classmates back in Sweden.” “It’s a very touching story,” added Malinowitzer, who as a special surprise was able to participate in the Swedish ceremony via Skype. “I got to speak to Anton and see how proud his family is of him and all of his accomplishments,” he said. “The Swedish parents were so delighted to get the chance to personally thank the entire East Islip School District for the opportunity we provided their son in the Business Academy. It has opened his eyes and introduced him to a whole new career in the business world.”

The Swedish school class was much smaller in size then East Islip’s graduating class. Their celebration started with the school prom on a Wednesday night, breakfast the next morning and graduation on Friday. The graduates wore specific attire – sailor hats with their names monogrammed on the visors, dark suits and ties for the boys, and white dresses for the girls. The ceremony consisted of musical skits where the students danced by or on their seats, with musical numbers performed by faculty and students. The students practiced all year to perform by enrolling in a designated class specifically designed for the end-of-year ceremony. Ironically, all the songs were by American artists and therefore sung in English. Scholarships were awarded and announcements made, with fellow Swedes helping the American family with translations. “It was energetic and celebratory in nature,” explained Malinowitzer, “but there was no calling up of the students and awarding them with their diplomas. It was said that the diplomas are mailed home.” After the ceremony, the Swedish families made a beeline to the exits, relocating to the town square where the students were congratulated by family, friends and the rest of the town. “Literally the whole town comes out and celebrates the accomplishments of the graduating class,” recalled Malinowitzer. “You can hear the band marching through the streets right down Main Street with many well-wishers screaming names of those they know.” When the graduates arrived at the town square, they were greeted by family members waving signs displaying the students’ baby pictures, which were then held up by the graduates so that well-wishers could find them. Necklaces made with traditional Swedish ribbon were placed over the graduates’ heads, many containing bunches of flowers, stuffed animals, balloons or representations of the sea. After the graduates received their necklaces, they piled onto “floats” and were paraded along the square for all to see. After the last float passed, the Swedish community dispersed to attend more familiar graduation parties. “It was a true celebration thrown for these kids,” said Malinowitzer. Hagberg plans to visit Long Island this September. “He wants very much to stop by and say hello to all his teachers in the Business Career Academy and thank them for helping make his high school year so special,” added Malinowitzer. “He will never forget all the students and community here for their outpouring of support and kindness. And of course, East Islip High School is grateful for the time we had to spend with Anton Hagberg, a young man with a bright future.”

Harvest & Seafood Festival The 10th Annual Fall Harvest and Seafood Festival will be held on Saturday, September 21st and Sunday, September 22nd, at Captree State Park in Babylon, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival offers fun for the entire family. Back To School Snack & Lunch Ideas You’ve got the kids’ backpacks ready with notebooks, pencils and paper, but what’s your plan for packing healthy back-to-school lunches? The American Heart Association recommends packing a healthy lunch at home to ensure that kids get the nutrition they need without all the fat, calories and salt found in convenience foods and many school lunch meals. Too much salt, calories and fat can contribute to long-term health issues like obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. Today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese; nearly triple the rate in 1963. Among children today, obesity is causing health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and elevated blood cholesterol levels. (Source: 2011 American Heart Association Understanding Childhood Obesity Statistical Sourcebook) Tips on packing healthy lunches: When packing a healthy lunch, the American Heart Association suggests choosing from the rainbow of foods in your supermarket’s produce department. Include foods that are red (red peppers, apples, tomatoes), orange (carrots, peaches), green (salad, celery sticks) and choose foods from the different food groups. Pack healthy drinks such as water, low-fat milk or 100% juice with no added sugar. Beverages boxes frozen the night before can keep a lunchbox cool until lunchtime. Cut out the soda and energy drinks. These are filled with sugar, empty calories and provide little or no nutrition. Sandwiches can be made on whole wheat bread, pita, wraps or flatbreads. Traditional luncheon meats are high in fat and sodium. When choosing luncheon meats, pick lean meats like turkey, ham or leftover chicken breast. Use reduced fat mayo or salad dressing or mustard to dress a sandwich and top with mixed greens or spinach for extra nutrients. Not the same old sandwich Pack hummus with fresh veggies and whole wheat pita

triangles or flatbreads for dipping. Hummus is a good low-fat protein source and is high in iron and vitamin C. Or try low-fat or fat-free cottage cheese with carrots, cherry tomatoes, fresh berries, or melon for a calciumrich, high-protein lunch. Salads topped with lean protein like hard-boiled eggs, beans or chicken are a great alternative to sandwiches and they help get kids on track with their daily vegetable servings. In a hurry? Buy bags of lettuce or precut carrots or make extra salad for dinner then pack the leftovers for lunch the next day. Didn’t pack a lunch? There are many options to choose from in the lunch line at school, some of them are healthier than others. Encourage kids to choose fruits and vegetables instead of French fries or chips and ask for grilled meat instead of fried. Hungry after school? When it comes to after school snacks, think energy, not fatty, high-calorie. Try baked potato or corn chips instead of fried. Keep a variety of salt-free nuts on hand for a high protein, essential fatty acid snack – but watch the portions. One-quarter cup of these calorie nuts is a serving. Focus on fruit and vegetables. Cut them up for greater acceptance. Have plain or with yogurt, hummus or dip. Stick to lowfat or light yogurt instead of the full calorie varieties targeted at children. To avoid artificial sweeteners, try fat-free plain yogurt mixed with fresh fruit. Cereal is not just for breakfast. High-fiber, low sugar cereals are fortified with vitamins and nutrients. Pour a serving size and add low-fat or skim milk for a satisfying snack that most kids can get for themselves. Not all granola bars are created equal. Choose whole grain granola bars that are low in fat and sugar – take a look at the food label and choose the ones that contain less than 1g of saturated fat per serving and are no more than 35% sugar by weight. Make sure there’s at least 5 grams of protein. Shop your local health store for pre-packaged snacks

MORE TIPS: Back to school lunchbox strategies: • Get lunch ready right after dinner when you’re in the kitchen or the night before. • Pack leftover dinners in lunch-size containers. • Keep dressings on the side to prevent soggy lunches. • Freeze healthy drinks to keep your lunch cool. • Rinse and pack fruit & veggies in snack bags on Sunday night, so they’re ready to go all week long. • If you’re buying convenience lunches or snacks, look for those with fewer than 100 calories and the least amount of sugar, saturated fat, trans fat and sodium. • Kids eat more fruit when it’s already cut up. Try oranges and Ginger Gold or Cortland apples since they’re slow to brown. Watch your portions: Size matters. Portion size has a lot to do with why our kids are gaining weight. Because there’s too much of everything on their plates, our kids are getting far more calories than they need daily. To start “Operation Portion Control,” you need to know how big a portion size really is. You may be surprised to learn these are serving sizes: • 1 slice of bread • ½ cup rice or pasta (cooked) • 1 small piece of fruit (super-large apples are 2+ servings) • 1 wedge of melon • 1/2 cup fruit juice • 1 cup milk or yogurt • 2 oz. cheese (about the size of a domino) • 2-3 oz. meat, poultry or fish (this is about the size of a deck of cards) Most servings are well over the standard portion size, so we’re all getting extra calories we don’t need. But with a little effort, we can take control. Cutting down the helpings will cut down the waistlines.
